Pakistan to play youngsters in future series

Mon, Jul 26 10 11:45 AM

Karachi, Jul 26 (PTI) Virtually ruling out Mohammad Yousuf and Younis Khan''s return to the side for the series against England, PCB chairman Ejaz has said that Pakistan will continue to test youngsters in future matches to build a strong team for next year''s World Cup. Butt''s statement comes on the heels of a young Pakistani side''s series-levelling Test win over Australia in 15 years in Headingley, England. Butt told ''News One'' television channel yesterday that the victory over Australia at Headingley has given the PCB confidence to repose faith in young blood. "Look these youngsters have justified their selection and performed well against the best team under pressure," he said. "The performance of young players has given us the confidence to try out more young players in the future to build a strong combination before the World Cup next year," he said. "I believe this historic win (over Australia) will not only give confidence to the players but to the whole nation. I am pretty optimistic that the team would carry this confidence in the series against England," the PCB chief added. Young batsmen, Umar Amin and Azhar Ali made their debut for Pakistan in the series against Australia. Butt''s comment lent credence to sources that the tour selection committee in England that included captain, coach and manager were not keen on recalling Yousuf and Younis. After Pakistan were humbled by Australia in the first Test at Lords, pressure grew on the board and selectors to call the two former captains back in the side to strengthen the team''s batting line-up. PCB chief selector, Mohsin Khan also made it clear that presently there were no plans to call the two senior players back in the team. "As far as Yousuf is concerned he retired himself and if he wants to play, then the PCB has to take a decision on him," Mohsin said. "The board has to give clearance to us to consider And as Yousuf and Younis for selection," he said. The former Test opener said he was a strong believer of promoting youngsters. "The selectors believe in investing in younger players because if they come through it means they will play for many more years. That solves lot of selection problems," Mohsin stated. Newly-appointed Pakistan Test captain, Salman Butt also made it clear that so far there were no talks of calling up reinforcements for the Test series against England. "When I am asked for my opinion we will see how to go about it," he said from London.

PIL seeks demolition of new stadium

Mon, Jul 26 10 11:07 AM

Mumbai, July 26 -- A public interest litigation (PIL) filed in the Bombay High Court has sought demolition of newly constructed indoor complex at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium (SVPS) in south Mumbai. National Sports Club of India has constructed the new complex in the closed stadium. The petitioner, 'Society for Promotion of Equality, Awareness and Rights', said several laws have been violated in the process. "Division bench of Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari have given three weeks to the NSCI and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai to file their replies," said advocate Ameya Tamne, the petitioner's lawyer. The petitioners' main contention is that no new construction is allowed in the Green Zone and Coastal Regulation Zone. The PIL alleges that under the garb of 'reconstruction', a totally new structure has been built, converting a once open-to-sky grounds into a closed stadium.

As per the petition, Floor Space Index of .15 is permitted in CRZ, but NSCI consumed FSI of 1.0 to build the new stadium. "It has reduced the size of the stadium...Playground has completely vanished," the petition says.

Referee Maria scores in alien territory

Mon, Jul 26 10 10:37 AM

Kolkata, July 26 -- It has been a forgettable week for women in Indian sport with revelations of sexual harassment in hockey and in weightlifting. But football referee Maria Rebello's feat will give women a reason to be happy. The 38-year-old from Goa became the first woman in the country to officiate in a men's match when she blew the whistle to kick-off the Santosh Trophy tie between Delhi and Madhya Pradesh at the Howrah stadium.

The Delhi-Madhya Pradesh match was a practical test for Maria, who is known by her first name, for a berth in the AFC & FIFA Elite panel of referees and so she was instructed not to interact with the media. AFC referees assessor Maniam Murugiah had come down from Singapore for the test. "This is her second and final test," Dutta confirmed. "Her first test was during the U-19 nationals six weeks ago when she officiated in the match between Uttarakhand and Mizoram at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan watched by assessor Pirom Ansapret of Thailand." If Maria qualifies, she will be only the second Indian on the Elite panel of referees along with Pratap Singh of the Services.

IPL teams' finances not clean?

Mon, Jul 26 10 10:07 AM

New Delhi, July 25 -- The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will submit a report on the balance sheets of all the eight Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises in the next four weeks, amid indications that the accounting regulator has come across violations of auditing norms by some of the teams. "There could be some discrepancies (in statements of accounts of IPL teams)," ICAI president Amarjit Chopra told Hindustan Times. ICAI's findings, which will be submitted to the corporate affairs ministry, are part of a multi-agency probe launched in April after allegations of financial irregularities and shady deals hit the popular league. While the income tax department is investigating tax evasion by entities involved in the league, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials are chasing foreign exchange law violations in a maze of transactions linking tax havens and mysterious stakeholders in teams. ICAI is examining if team owners had contravened auditing norms while presenting their financial statements. Chopra said ICAI would not hesitate to take action against the teams' chartered accountants if there were conclusive evidence that books were doctored. "We will proceed against our members (chartered accountants) if any discrepancy or doctoring of books if found," he said. The Financial Reporting Review Board, an oversight committee set up by the regulator, is examining the report. Chopra however did not elaborate on the course of action that could be taken.

The corporate affairs ministry had expressed concerns over inadequate information in balance sheets and records filed by some of the IPL franchises with the Registrar of Companies.

Delhi continue victory march, Haryana lose

Mon, Jul 26 10 09:27 AM

Kolkata, July 25 -- Delhi marched into the pre-quarter finals of the Santosh Trophy with a confident 3-1 win over Madhya Pradesh in a Cluster V match at the Howrah stadium on Sunday. Having qualified with nine points from their three cluster matches, Delhi will take on Chhattisgarh on Tuesday for a place in the quarter-final league. Chhattisgarh, too, qualified with an all-win record after they defeated Haryana 5-1 in their Cluster VI match at Khardah stadium. Delhi shot into the lead in the fourth minute when striker David Ngaihte's powerful right-footer from just outside the box left Madhya Pradesh goalkeeper Kamal Ahir stranded. This was after David had a goal disallowed by woman referee Maria Rebello for infringement on the goalkeeper in the first minute itself. But Madhya Pradesh slowly clawed back into the match, Delhi's profligacy and hence the frustration up front helping their rivals take control of the midfield. The equaliser came in the 17th minute when Madhya Pradesh midfielder S. Gaiguiba Thangal capped a solo run down the right and lay it up for an unmarked Javed Manihar inside the box. The striker made no mistake in slotting home. The rest of the first half was a battle to take control of the midfield and though Delhi looked more likely to score, the teams went into the break tied at 1-1. Madhya Pradesh began the second half showing more purpose and pushed men upfront. That gave Delhi more space and they hit on the counter. Former HAL midfielder Bhuvan Joshi gave Delhi the lead in the 55th minute.

Force India reprimanded after tyre bungle

Published>Mon, Jul 26 10 08:17 AM

Force India were reprimanded by stewards at the German Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday after mixing up their drivers' tyres.

International Automobile Federation (FIA) technical delegate Jo Bauer reported after the race that the team had put one of Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi's rear super-soft tyres on Adrian Sutil's car along with three of the German's allocation of hard ones at the first pitstop.

Liuzzi was sent out with three super-soft tyres and one rear hard.

The two drivers, who finished 16th and 17th, had already collided with each other on the opening lap.

"It was always our strategy that, if after the start I had not made up places, I would pit on the first lap to change to the prime tyres and make up positions when other cars stopped later on," said Sutil.

"It was a good plan as you have nothing to lose when you are that far down, but there was some confusion in the stop.

"Tonio had radioed to say he was coming in for a front wing change and as we both arrived at the same time the tyre sets got mixed up and then I had to come in and pit again to get the correct set."

Liuzzi also had to pit again for the correct tyres.

"It was a case of cause-and-effect -- one bad thing led to another," said chief operating officer Otmar Szafnauer.

"We had some issues in practice, which meant qualifying was not ideal, and in trying to be aggressive at the start we had a coming together, which in turn led to the confusion in the stops."

NEWSMAKER - Enigmatic Armstrong in final Tour curtain call

Radioshack team rider Lance Armstrong of the U.S. waves on the Champs Elysees in Paris...

Published>Mon, Jul 26 10 01:07 AM

Lance Armstrong drew the curtain down on an amazing career in top-class international cycling on Sunday as a hero to his devoted followers but much less so to the sceptics.

Armstrong, who won the Tour de France a record seven times, helped cycling shift from a sport of tradition and folklore into a modern, professional, global one.

The 38-year-old American, who finished a distant 23rd in his final Tour de France, has won the world's greatest race more than anyone else, reigning on the Tour from 1999-2005.

It seemed impossible in 1999, when he collected the first of his 82 yellow jerseys and the third of 23 stage wins, for anyone to win seven Tours -- in particular a rider like Armstrong who almost lost his life to testicular cancer diagnosed in 1996.

His attention to detail and obsession with the Tour are well known but his pure sporting skills and extraordinary strength of character were often overlooked.

On Sunday, in the train taking the Tour peloton to the start of the final stage, Armstrong sat down with three media representatives, including Reuters.

He recalled: "(It was) a very traditional sport, very old school, almost relaxed. We just wiped it all clean and said 'we're gonna analyse every little thing.

"If it's a composition of a team, if it's a diet, if it's reckoning the courses, if it's the tactics, if it's radios, whatever it is, we sort of led the push there."

Like Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault or Jacques Anquetil, Armstrong was not interested in being a popular rider. But he came back to the sport at the end of 2008 after three years in retirement, keen to help the plight of cancer sufferers.

SQUARED OFF

In his domination of the Tour, Armstrong found motivation in duels with his challengers, the most notable being Jan Ullrich, who finished second three times.

Alberto Contador was the other, although they really squared off only once, in 2009. That year, Armstrong lost a psychological battle and ended up third overall, but ready to have another shot at an unprecedented eighth title.

It proved a cruel swansong for the Texan, who started the race with his own RadioShack team, but had to concede defeat in the first mountain stage after losing considerable time following an early crash.

With hope gone of prevailing one last time, Armstrong, battered and bruised, continued in the race with dignity, hanging on for dear life in the mountains.

A long breakaway in the most prestigious stage reminded everyone, if need be, that a champion has to hold his head high.

"I've got my competitive fix for the next 40 years, it will take until about 80 (years old) and then I don't think I will wanna come back," he said with a laugh.

LEAST FAVOURITE

"I find it wonderful to observe that Lance Armstrong really loves the Tour de France," said Tour director Christian Prudhomme.

Finally, in return, the Tour de France loved Armstrong, who once had been voted France's least favourite athlete.

Dozens of fans gathered by his team bus every morning, thousands lined up along the roads to support him and millions were glued in front of their TV sets to witness his last Tour.

"Whatever he does, he is a story. He is an incredible character," Frenchman Alain Gallopin, one of RadioShack's sports directors, told Reuters.

Armstrong, who reached beyond his sport like no rider before him, is now longing to enjoy days on the beach with his growing family and will race only minor events.

TIGHT SCRUTINY

"He's just a legend," said Giro champion Ivan Basso of Italy.

The legend, however, has been under very tight scrutiny.

Although he never tested positive, Armstrong has faced doping allegations throughout his career and the American will have to fight them when he gets back home.

A federal investigation in the U.S. is focusing on whether Armstrong used government money to dope and win his seven Tours with the U.S. Postal team - following allegations made by his former team mate and disgraced 2006 Tour winner Floyd Landis.

"That's not new, it didn't start in May (at the time of Landis's allegations) that started in 1999. I'm so immune to that. That's totally fine, I have no problem with that. I gave up fighting that a long time ago," he said.

In 2005, shortly after his seventh Tour title, French daily L'Equipe claimed samples from the 1999 Tour showed traces of the banned blood-booster EPO.

Armstrong was cleared of any wrongdoing following an independent probe, although then-WADA president Dick Pound questioned the independence of the investigation.

"I can assure you that there is not gonna be a teary-eyed confession from me", said Armstrong.

"I'm 100 per cent confident. I know what I did and didn't do. And I know that the press is ... incredibly sensational, I'm not a fool, that's what they need, that's okay. In the end it will all come out."

Armstrong, who has hired a criminal defence attorney to fight the allegations, is confident the investigation will go his way - eventually.

"We will certainly field the best team but in the end it's a fair competition, that's why ultimately - maybe not yet, maybe not right now - but ultimately it will be a fair competition and I'll get my chance to speak about it," he said.

Asked what his legacy would be, Armstrong, mindful of a modern 24/7 media, blogs and speculation, said: "There's much noise out there for a lot of people.

"Legacies won't ever be the same. If Frank Sinatra lived today, he'd have a much more difficult time being Frank Sinatra."

Iraqi soccer federation fails to elect new head

Published>Mon, Jul 26 10 12:57 AM

Iraq failed to elect a new president of its soccer federation for the second time in two days on Sunday, raising the prospect of new sanctions by the world soccer body FIFA.

Political bickering has paralysed the federation, split by sectarian divisions seven years after the U.S.-led invasion and three years after a multi-ethnic Iraqi squad won the Asia Cup.

FIFA requires governments to refrain from meddling in national soccer federations and has suspended Iraq twice, lifting the latest ban in March on condition the federation agreed on a road map for new elections.

The government of Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has been trying to remove top officials from sport bodies suspected of ties to the Sunni-led former government of Saddam Hussein.

Hussain Saeed, president of the Iraqi Football Association who once was a senior official on the Olympic Committee controlled by Saddam's son Uday, is facing a challenge from Falah Hassan, backed by the Shi'ite-led government. Both are former players in the Iraqi national team.

The federation was due to elect a new president on Sunday but the vote was called off a second time after only 25 delegates showed up in Arbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, where FIFA had decided the vote should take place for security reasons.

A vote scheduled for Saturday was also abandoned for lack of a quorum.

Most delegates stayed in Baghdad where the government had wanted to hold the election to demonstrate improved security since 2006-2007 when sectarian warfare was at its height.

"We failed to conduct the vote due to a lack of quorum and ask FIFA to grant a postponement until conditions improve," Saeed told reporters.

He called on FIFA to prevent outside interference after accusing the government of trying to put pressure on some delegates not to travel to Arbil.

The bickering has affected Iraq's performance after hiring a succession of coaches and failing to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa this year. Last year, FIFA allowed Iraq to host its first friendlies since 2003. Iraq defeated Palestine in two matches played in Arbil and Baghdad.

Ferrari fined after German GP one-two

Ferrari Formula One driver Fernando Alonso of Spain celebrates as Ferrari Formula One driver Felipe...

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 11:57 PM

Ferrari were fined $100,000 and risked further sanctions from Formula One's governing body on Sunday after Fernando Alonso won a German Grand Prix clouded by their use of banned 'team orders'.

The Spaniard's success, beating team mate Felipe Massa by 4.1 seconds in a one-two finish to reignite his championship challenge, was engulfed in controversy from the moment the Brazilian was sent a veiled message to let him pass while leading the race.

"I have to say that is the clearest team order I've ever seen," said Red Bull team Christian Horner, whose German driver Sebastian Vettel finished third after starting on pole for the sixth time in 11 races.

"It's wrong for the sport. The drivers should have been allowed to race."

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton finished fourth to extend his championship lead over team mate and reigning champion Jenson Button, who was fifth, to 14 points. McLaren's lead over Red Bull was cut to 28 points.

MASSA SYMPATHY

The furore that followed was also a reflection of the sympathy surrounding Massa who might have otherwise stood on top of the podium on the first anniversary of his near-fatal Hungarian Grand Prix accident.

After hearing from both drivers and Ferrari team manager Massimo Rivola, the four stewards -- including former Indy 500 winner Danny Sullivan -- found Ferrari had broken the rules.

In addition to the fine, the team were referred to the International Automobile Federation (FIA)'s world motorsport council which can impose unlimited penalties.

While Massa told a news conference that he had made the decision himself, saying he was struggling with the hard tyres, the radio traffic suggested a different story.

"So, Fernando is faster than you," race engineer Rob Smedley told the Brazilian on the 47th of the 67 laps.

After Alonso passed two laps later, Smedley added: "Good lad. Just stick with it now. Sorry." He later said the Brazilian had been "very, very, very magnanimous".

In a tense and hostile news conference, Massa faced questions about whether he was now number two at the team while Alonso fended off suggestions that the win was as tainted as the one he took in Singapore in 2008 after Brazilian team mate Nelson Piquet crashed his Renault deliberately to help him.

The ghost of the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix, where Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was ordered to let Ferrari team mate Michael Schumacher win in a notorious incident that led to team orders being banned, also hung heavy in the air.

So remorseless was the questioning that Vettel, ignored by all, asked if he might leave. "No, stay, stay," said Alonso, laughingly placing a hand on the youngster's shoulder to restrain him.

GREAT START

Vettel had started the day as favourite but made a poor getaway, moving across to try and block Alonso but handing Massa a clear road to turn one.

With the Ferraris one-two for the first 13 laps before Alonso pitted, the main thrill was the battle of wills between the determined Brazilian and a Spanish team mate whose frustration became increasingly evident.

"This is ridiculous," Alonso said over the radio as he tried, and failed, to squeeze past on lap 21.

When the double world champion, who will celebrate his 29th birthday in Hungary on Thursday, finally did get past, the gesture was obvious.

Lotus engineering head Mike Gascoyne said he had sympathy for Ferrari but the gesture had been too blatant.

"There's always been team orders in Formula One," he said. "The bottom line is -- if you are going to do it, do it far more cleverly than that."

With Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren in a different race to the rest, Renault, Mercedes and Sauber scrapped for the remaining points.

Australian Mark Webber was sixth for Red Bull, Poland's Robert Kubica seventh in a Renault and followed by the Mercedes of Germans Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher.

Russian Vitaly Petrov, his future with the team subject to considerable speculation, collected the final point for Renault in his first top-10 finish since April.

Petacchi keeps Cavendish waiting for green jersey

Lampre team rider Alessandro Petacchi of Italy wears the green sprinter jersey on the podium...

Sun, Jul 25 10 11:51 PM

Green can wait for Mark Cavendish, who missed out on the best sprinter's jersey at the Tour de France for the second year in succession to a more experienced rider, Italian Alessandro Petacchi.

The Briton won his fifth stage of the 2010 Tour on the Champs Elysees on Sunday and became the first sprinter to triumph twice in succession on the famous Parisian avenue, which has hosted the race finale since 1975.

With 15 stage wins at the age of 25, Cavendish is certainly the most gifted sprinter of the last two decades but he finished 11 points behind a rider 11 years his senior who fully deserved the reward.

Even though he only won two stages, the 36-year-old Petacchi was more consistent and Cavendish, plagued by doubts in the first week of the race, lost vital points in the early stages.

"I had a poor start, I was wondering if I could make it but we kept trying. When you arrive in Paris for the most spectacular finish in the world, you have a feeling of accomplishment which by far exceeds the disappointment," Cavendish said.

"Sorry I could not do more."

While Cavendish has many seasons ahead of him to become the first Briton to win the green jersey, Petacchi crowned an exceptional career with cycling's most coveted trophy for a sprinter.

The most successful active rider with 155 victories, Petacchi joined a select list of sprinters who have won the green jersey in the big three Tours. The last man to do so was France's Laurent Jalabert in 1999.

The Lampre rider topped the points classification in the Giro d'Italia in 2004 and at the Spanish Vuelta in 2005.

With 46 stage wins in the three majors, Petacchi's record is only surpassed by his compatriot Mario Cipollini, who won 57 stages. He also became the first Italian to take the green jersey since Franco Bitossi in 1968.

Yet the Italian might not be able to celebrate when he returns home. He was notified by government officials before the Tour that he is being formally investigated by Italian police for allegedly using illegal substances.

Contador masks weaknesses to secure third Tour title

Astana team rider and leader's yellow jersey Alberto Contador of Spain (C) celebrates his overall...

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 10:37 PM

One year after taking every opportunity to show his strength to win the Tour de France, Alberto Contador claimed his third title by hiding his weaknesses.

The 27-year-old Spaniard, one of five men with wins in the Tour, the Giro d'Italia and the Spanish Vuelta, suffered a lot on the 3,642-km course although it was tailor-made for him.

He proved less impressive in the mountains and almost cracked in Saturday's time trial which meant his victory on Sunday was secured by only 39 seconds - the fifth slimmest winning margin ever.

"This year, I have had difficult moments, physically. I was not at my best every day," Contador told Reuters on the train taking the peloton to the start of Sunday's final stage to the Champs Elysees.

"But on those bad days, I have been able to hide the fact that I was not too well."

Last year, Contador, locked in a psychological battle with rival and then-team mate Lance Armstrong, attacked in the first mountain stage, smashed the competition in the decisive climb to Verbier and won the final time trial.

MOUNTAIN STAGE

It has been quite another story in the past three weeks.

He lost 10 seconds to eventual runner-up Andy Schleck in a mountain stage to Avoriaz, on a bad day.

"That day, I was not that well", said Contador, who was relieved Schleck did not attack him earlier in the ascent.

"But I managed to hide that and at the end of the day, I limited the damage."

He also saw his overall lead unexpectedly threatened in Saturday's 52-km time trial.

At one point, Schleck was just about two seconds adrift of Contador in the overall standings and the Spaniard panicked.

"We had a problem with the earpieces, I could not hear anything (from the team manager in the car) from the seventh kilometre," he explained.

Astana manager Yvon Sanquer had to scream the time differences to his proteges as mechanic Faustino Munoz banged on the car window in anger.

"It was really difficult for him to hear because of the (TV) helicopter and the (photographers') motorbikes," said Sanquer.

"I really thought that at one point, the Tour was over," said Contador, who could not hold back tears as he climbed on the podium after the stage.

Contador, who last year won the Tour by beating Schleck by over four minutes, would not say his rival had improved and could be even more of a threat next year.

"It's me who was weaker, it's not him who was better," he said.

Alonso wins German GP in Ferrari one-two

Ferrari Formula One driver Fernando Alonso of Spain sprays champagne after winning the German Grand...

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 08:17 PM

HOCKENHEIM, Germany(Reuters) - Fernando Alonso led a Ferrari one-two in the German Grand Prix on Sunday after denying Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa an emotional victory one year on from a near-fatal crash.

While the Spaniard celebrated his second triumph of the season, and 23rd of his career, it was accompanied by a whiff of controversy with Massa sent a veiled message to allow his team mate through.

"So, Fernando is faster than you," Massa's race engineer Rob Smedley told the Brazilian on the 47th of the 67 laps after his driver had led from the start.

Alonso then passed two laps later, prompting Smedley to say to Massa: "Good lad. Just stick with it now. Sorry."

Massa's disappointment, evident at the finish when he shrugged off Alonso's attempted embrace as they stepped out of their cars, was matched by that of the home fans hoping to see Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel win from pole position.

The young German made a poor start, with the Ferraris scything past on either side, and had to make do with third place.

McLaren's Lewis Hamilton finished fourth to extend his championship lead over team mate and reigning champion Jenson Button, who was fifth, to 14 points.

The one-two finish was Ferrari's second of the season after they placed in the same order in the Bahrain season-opener and re-established them and Alonso as contenders after a difficult run of races.

HUNGARY ACCIDENT

Sunday marked the first anniversary of the Hungarian Grand Prix accident that left Massa in a coma for days and fighting life-threatening injuries after being hit on the head by bouncing debris in qualifying.

The Brazilian missed the rest of the 2009 season, and has not won a race since 2008, but he gave it his best shot on Sunday.

Vettel, on pole for the sixth time in 11 races, moved aggressively to his right at the start to try and block Alonso, handing Massa a clear track to beat both of them into the first corner.

With the Ferraris one-two for the first 13 laps before Alonso pitted, the main thrill was the battle of wills between the determined Brazilian and a Spanish team mate whose frustration became increasingly evident.

"This is ridiculous," Alonso was heard saying over the team radio as he tried, and failed, to squeeze past on lap 21.

When the double world champion, who will celebrate his 29th birthday in Hungary on Thursday, finally did get past, it was a muted success.

"That was as blatant as it comes. He might as well have put his arm out of the cockpit and waved him through," British driver Anthony Davidson told BBC radio listeners.

Russian Vitaly Petrov, his future with the team subject to considerable speculation, collected the final point for Renault in his first top 10 finish since April.

Tendulkar rise, Gambhir slip in ICC Test ranking

Sun, Jul 25 10 07:51 PM

Dubai, Jul 25 (PTI) Senior India batsman Sachin Tendulkar gained two places to reach the sixth spot but a poor form saw opener Gautam Gambhir slip five rungs down the ladder at ninth in the latest ICC ranking for Test batsmen released today. Gambhir, who got out cheaply in the first over in both innings in first Test, have 773 points, while Tendulkar has 795 points in his kitty. However, compatriot Virender Sehwag continued his upward surge after scoring a century in the first Test and topped the chart with 866 points. Among other Indians to figure in the top-20 list, VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid, went down one step each to sit at the 14th and 18th place respectively. Meanwhile, seasoned off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and pacer Zaheer Khan were static in the top-20 bowlers'' chart, led by South African fast bowler Dale Steyn. Zaheer, who missed the first Test after suffering a shoulder injury, was seventh with 722 points, followed by an off-colour Harbhajan, 47 points adrift. Sri Lankan spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan, who retired from Test cricket after becoming the first to bag 800 wickets last Thursday, was the third best bowler in the rating chart. In the team ranking, India retained their numero uno status with 124 points, followed by South Africa (120) and Australia (116). Snooker legend Alex Higgins dies

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 07:27 PM

Belfast, July 25 (IANS) Two time world snooker champion Alex Higgins died Saturday, losing his 12 year old battle with throat cancer.

He may have been dead for several days before his neighbours found his body by breaking into his home here.

Higgins was famously called The Hurricane because of his sheer speed play and flamboyance around the snooker table.

With his open necked shirts, long hair and cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other hand, the Irish player also changed the way the game of snooker was played at that time.

Tributes to the snooker legend have also started pouring in, since the news of his death broke.

'To people in the game, he was a constant source of argument, he was a rebel. But to the wider public he was a breath of fresh air that drew them into the game. He was an inspiration to my generation,' six-time champion Steve Davis was quoted as saying by The Guardian.

Davis also recollected his days of rivalry with The Hurricane.

'It was a love-hate relationship with. The thrill of playing him was fantastic, but the crowd that came along were not your usual crowd. They were much more noisy and you had to play the crowd as well.'

Another former snooker champion and commentator Dennis Taylor told the BBC: 'I don't think you'll ever, ever see another player in the game of snooker like the great Alex Higgins. 'He was a very, very exciting player to watch. He just was totally unique.'

Higgins claimed the world champion's crown at his first attempt, aged 22, and took it back again 10 years later from Ray Reardon at the Crucible in Sheffield. He will be best remembered for winning his second world championship in 1982 when, in tears, he invited his wife Lynn and baby daughter Lauren to join him by the baize with the trophy.

"Football fans in England and Wales are over-policed": FSF

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 07:21 PM

London, July 25 (ANI): The Footballer Supporters' Federation (FSF) has said that

otball fans in England and Wales are over-policed.

"Fans are still being subjected to heavy-handed policing week in, week out," BBC quoted FSF spokeswoman Amanda Jacks, as saying.

She accused police of being wrong in treating supporters as hooligans, most of whom are children and with family.

However, the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) has disputed the claim by saying that now, Premier League matches do not have police presence, instead it relies solely upon the clubs' stewards.

"If you look at a club like Sheffield Wednesday, perhaps 20 years ago South Yorkshire would have sent over 1,100 officers to a high risk match, that figure today has dropped to below 300, which reflects the changes in football, and the change to the demographic of fans," he said.

Jacks insisted that police should judge fans on their behaviour at the time, and not their reputation.

The FSF is due to discuss the issue later at its latest annual gathering "Fans Parliament". (ANI)

Malleswari wants IWF secretary sacked

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 07:17 PM

Noida, Jul 25 (IANS) Sydney Olympics bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari said Sunday that Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) secretary Sahdev Yadav should be sacked for not taking timely action against coach Ramesh Malhotra, who has now been suspended on charges of sexual harassment.

Malleshwari, who is the vice president of the IWF, said that Yadav never paid heed to her complaints in the past against Malhotra. She said that Yadav should take the responsibility and resign.

Under pressure, the IWF, in the wake of the sexual harassment case in hockey, sacked Malhotra after Malleshwari alleged that the coach was involved in sexually harassing junior lifters at the national camp at Patiala.

'It is not enough to suspend the coach. The federation secretary should also be sacked since he never took any action against Malhotra despite repeated complaints. If Yadav is not sacked, then people like Malhotra can become coaches again,' Malleswari told reporters here.

Malleshwari said that she first complained against Malhotra at the IWF Executive Committee meeting at Udaipur in February.

'I was assured that action would be taken. But leave alone taking action, he was recommended for the Dronacharya award,' she added.

Malleshwari, who is the nation's only female Olympic medallist, feels that by recommending Malhotra for the Dronacharya Award, IWF has devalued the prestigious award.

'Considering his past records he should not have been given charge of women lifters. But he was kept at the camp and even taken as women's coach in the recent junior Asian Championships. By recommending his name for the Dronacharya Award, the IWF was devaluing the prestigious honour,' she said.

Malleshwari said that Malhotra has been harassing women lifters for the past decade.

'Whatever I am saying now was never a secret. Sports Authority of India officials, senior coaches, the federation and the players knew about it all along. At the time all this happened, I was myself an active player and was focussing only on my game. But SAI has several written complaints against him and if they couldn't act on them them, what could I have done at that time?,' she asked.

I am not protecting Lalit Modi: Sharad Pawar

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 06:51 PM

New Delhi, July 25 (IANS) International Cricket Council (ICC) president Sharad Pawar said Sunday he was not protecting his one-time protege Lalit Modi and made it clear that the suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) commissioner will face the music if he had committed any mistakes.

'No question of protecting anybody. Not only Modi but anybody. If somebody has committed some mistake he will have to face the music,' Pawar, who took over as the ICC president earlier this month, was quoted as saying in a TV interview.

Pawar, a former president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and currently the union agriculture minister, admitted that the charges of corruption had tarnished the image of the IPL and Modi's controversial style of functioning wasn't accepted by the BCCI's top brass.

'IPL the product has been a success in this country. It has established that India can also organise such things and there he (Modi) has taken lots of pains, there is no two opinion about that. If somebody has contributed one has also to accept that contribution.'

'But his style of functioning has become controversial and the present Board feels they should go in-depth (for a probe). The board has deputed a committee and let us see what is the outcome. From what I know of BCCI, it will take an appropriate decision and take steps to improve their functioning and image,' he said.

Pawar went on to add that Modi was given a fair trial by the BCCI.

'I am confident that he has to be given a fair trial. But I can't interfere either way.'

Distancing himself as a Modi supporter, Pawar said: 'All of us -- myself, Modi and (Shashank) Manohar -- have worked together as a group and have contributed something. But the present set-up feels something has gone wrong. So until these (wrongdoings) are not established, it is not proper for me to support or oppose one against the other. Basically I am keeping away from all this.'

As an ICC president, he felt that the world body can't interfere if the BCCI fails to take satisfactory steps to clean the IPL of charges of corruption.

'Under its constitution, ICC has no authority to interfere in functioning of any member country. ICC will not interfere in their domestic tournaments,' he said.

Pawar was sad that the image of the IPL had been tarnished due to corruption charges.

'I don't think IPL's overall position will be damaged. But definitely in the mind of cricket-loving people within India and outside they have started thinking in a different way that there seems to be some wrong things happening,' he said.

Atlanta, July 25 (IANS) India's Rohan Bopanna and Kristof Vliegen of Belgium defeated Stephen Huss of Australia and Brazil's Andre Sa in straight sets to reach the doubles final of the Atlanta Tennis Championship.

Kapil Dev set to fulfil Indian migrant''s last wish

Sun, Jul 25 10 06:27 PM

Natasha Chaku Melbourne, Jul 25 (PTI) Family of Indian immigrant Pooran Singh, who died here in Warranambool over six decades ago, today finally collected his ashes at a jam packed ceremony along with legendary cricketer Kapil Dev to fulfil his last wish to immerse his ashes in the Ganges. Kapil, who will leave tomorrow for India with the ashes, said he was very honoured to come on behalf of Pooran''s family for the purpose. "I will leave tomorrow with the ashes along with his family member, Kapil told PTI today. Moved by the story of the childless hawker whose ashes had been held by a funeral home for the last 63 years in the hope that relatives would one day claim them, Kapil travelled to Warrnambool in Victoria to collect the remains. Over hundred of people from Melbourne''s Sikh community joined by many others at the cemetery to witness the handover ceremony to Kapil and Singh''s great nephew Harmel Uppal, a 47-year-old father of two who works in the clothing industry in the UK. "It''s an amazing story and has moved my heart. I was very touched by the Australian people...they have a soft heart ....there is a very human touch here. and I am very grateful to people here," Kapil said. "This is definitely different to anything in my life I have ever done. It''s one of the best, emotional stories with a happy ending," the legendary cricketer said, adding "This is the bridge between the people to say you can love each other." In 1899, as a 30-year-old Singh left his family in Bilga, a village in Punjab, to go to Australia. He worked as a hawker, selling goods from his horse-drawn wagon, travelling from one country town to the other. Singh was cremated in June 1947 with his relatives in India being notified of his death by telegram. Ever since, Singh''s ashes have been kept safe by an Australian family funeral company Guyett''s Funerals in Warrnambool as his last wish was that his ashes be returned to India and immersed in the Ganges. Uppal, who came to know about the story through the media in the UK said: "Its hard to explain the emotions." "Its fantastic being here so significant to our family. I think this will be the start of many visits by Indian people here," he said "I first heard about him when I was about five or six and remember being told he moved to Australia when he was young," Uppal said. "A few months ago family members told us there was a lot of media interest in the village and we later learnt about the story of great uncle and his ashes. "It was because of his savings he sent to India the rest of his familys poverty was lifted," a grateful Uppal said.

'Funny' Swann has blossomed into world's best spin bowler: Stewart

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 06:17 PM

London, July 25 (ANI): Former England captain Alec Stewart insists that spinner Graeme Swann has got all the attributes to win the Ashes series Down Under this winter.

With seven five-wicket hauls, almost 100 wickets and an Ashes series victory from last summer already under his belt, Stewart believes Swann is making up for lost time after being a latecomer to the international scene.

Stewart believes the 31-year-old has blossomed into a cricketer capable of leading England's attack as they bid to avenge the 5-0 humiliation suffered at the hands of Australia in the 2006-07 Ashes series.

"Graeme is the best spin bowler in the world currently and his record shows that," the News of The World quoted Stewart, who earned 133 Test caps before his retirement in 2003, as saying.

"That is through hard work, through intelligence, through maturity and he will just build on it. He is one of the funniest guys I have ever met in cricket, but looking back he did a lot wrong on the 1999-2000 trip," Stewart said. (ANI)

Sidebottom warns England's young guns on Ashes spot

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 06:07 PM

London, July 25 (ANI): Ryan Sidebottom has warned England's young guns he will continue to breath down their necks as he chases for a place in the Ashes squad.

The 32-year-old has only played one Test match, the innings defeat in Johannesburg in January, in the last 18 months but was one of the stars of England's World Twenty20 win in the Caribbean in May.

Sidebottom was then overlooked for the routine series win over Bangladesh with rookies Steven Finn and Ajmal Shahzad impressing alongside James Anderson in the attack.

"I feel I'm in good form and I'm bowling well and that's all that really matters," the News of The World quoted Sidebottom, who moved from Yorkshire to Nottinghamshire in 2003, as saying.

"If I keep taking wickets and knocking on the door, there may still be a chance for me to play in the Ashes," he added.

"All the guys are going out there under pressure, which bodes well for those who are playing regularly. They know that if they don't perform that there's someone else who can come in and take their place and I will keep pushing as much as I can," he said. (ANI)

Fish to face Isner in final after Roddick's knockout

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 05:37 PM

Atlanta, July 25 (DPA) Mardy Fish ran his career-best win streak to nine straight as the sixth seed stunned top seed Andy Roddick 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the semifinals of the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

The victory in 90 minutes Saturday ended a seven-year dry spell for the Floridian, who once shared a house in his teenaged years with Roddick. Fish earned his only previous win over one-time number one Roddick in 2003 when the pair were beginning their careers. Roddick then won the next nine.

Fish is on fire this season with a Queen's club final in London and the Newport title this month to show for his efforts.

'This is fantastic, to finally beat Andy is great,' said Fish. 'It was a tough match but I served well and took my chances. I know I've improved my game and it's showing.'

The 28-year-old has lifted to new levels after losing around 15 kilogrammes last autumn as he recovered after knee surgery. The final against compatriot John Isner will be his third from his past four tournaments.

Isner, the Wimbledon marathon man from a month ago, booked his spot in the title match on a sweltering afternoon, benefiting from late cloud cover as he beat Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3.

Fish stands 1-0 over Isner after a 2009 win. The winner managed nine aces and needed only one break to overcome Roddick, who has struggled in three sets all week.

The afternoon Isner match ended with a win as a siren wailed to alert golfers to leave a nearby course with lightning in the area after a day of temperatures on court in excess of 35 degrees Celsius.

Second seed Isner easily won the first set, but made a hash of the second set, allowing Anderson to take it into a deciding set as the challenger won the second in his fifth opportunity.

Isner struggled with the heat three weeks after achieving record book status by winning the longest match in tennis in the Wimbledon first round over Nicolas Mahut.

'The heat was brutal against today,' said the number 19. 'But I was really waiting for that cloud in the third set. I needed it.

'I had melted before in a match like this and I was determined not to do that again. I stayed strong mentally. I was able to play through and pull it out.'

Isner won his lone title this season last January in Auckland and was beaten in finals in Memphis and Belgrade.

'It was disappointing to lose today, I thought I was playing pretty well,' said Anderson. 'I made him work harder for his service games than he did for me.

'He just served too well and capitalised on the two break points against my serve. This is my second-best career result (after the 2008 Las Vegas final).

'It was really hot, I was sweating through my shoes. I knew it would be tough. I started well in third but I played one average service game and he took advantage.'

Isner improved to 3-1 on the ATP over Anderson, whom he also played during the pair's university days in the US.

Job is not easy even in absence of Murali and Malinga: Dhoni

Sun, Jul 25 10 05:27 PM

T V Sriram Colombo, Jul 25 (PTI) The dreaded duo of Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralitharan would be missing from the Sri Lankan bowling attack but Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today said their absence does not make his batsmen''s job any easy in the second cricket Test starting here tomorrow. Pacer Malinga and off-spin genius Muralitharan shared 15 of the 20 Indian wickets among them and played a major role in inflicting a crushing 10-wicket defeat on the visitors in the first Test in Galle. Malinga has been ruled of the match due to a knee injury and Muralitharan has just retired from Test cricket. "Nothing is easy in international cricket. You may miss the most experienced bowler but at the same time there will be a youngster standing up saying that I will try to fill in the shoes and he may be a good talent," Dhoni said at the pre-match press conference. "So it is not about whom you are missing and that which matter is who is filling in the gap and who will be doing the job for you." Ajantha Mendis, who was India''s tormentor in the last tour, will replace Muralitharan but Dhoni was confident of taking on the dangerous mystery spinner. Mendis had also taken six wickets during India''s only practice game ahead of the Test series but Dhoni said his batsmen have got the measure of the bowler by playing against him consistently. "There is definitely more exposure. Most of the cricketers who were part of the side have played him in the past quite a few times. So that really helps them in judging what kind of variation he has got. What is the kind of line he looks to bowl and the general strategy as well. I think it will be an interesting face off between the batting and the bowlers. .

Ponting tips England to beat Pakistan in Test series

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 05:17 PM

London, July 25(ANI): Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that England are better equipped to win their upcoming series against Pakistan.

Ponting said that England have got home advantage, and a comparatively balanced side.

"There is no doubt that Pakistan's bowling is one of the best in the world and better than that of England. But when we compare the two it is the all-round ability of the England team that make them favourites for the four match series starting next week," The News quoted Ponting, as saying.

"They have a balanced side in all areas of the game. In comparison, Pakistan have got a weak and inexperienced batting lineup. I do not think, bowling alone can win matches for Pakistan every time. Their young lot will have to show a lot of mental toughness to beat England," he added.

He further insisted that his team made their best effort to make the Headingley Test run chase interesting.

"They had an easy 40 runs to win and my team did all it could to make that difficult and we succeeded in that," he added. (ANI)

Headingley Test performance against Australia 'a dream come true': Aamer

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 04:51 PM

London, July 25(ANI): Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Aamer has described his match-winning performance against Australia in the Headingley Test as a 'dream come true' and one he would remember for a long time to come.

Aamer's bowling helped Pakistan register their first Test win against Australia in 15 years.

The 18-year-old took 11 wickets in the two Tests against Australia, including seven in the second Test, which earned him the man-of-the-match award.

"It is a dream come true for me, because I had always dreamt of performing well against Australia, and thanks to Almighty Allah, I have done well to help my team win the Test," The News quoted Aamer, as saying.

Aamer's performances have prompted experts to compare him with Pakistani legend Wasim Akram, but he said that he has a long way to go before being compared to the great fast bowler.

"I stand no where near Wasim Bhai. I have to go a long way to become Wasim Akram, but his words were very encouraging and increased my will to perform. He is my idol, and I want to become as consistent as he was during his entire career," he added.

Pakistan registered a three-wicket win on Saturday to level the two-match series 1-1.

It was Pakistan's first Test victory over Australia since 1995, with the Australians winning 13 matches on the trot since then.

Australia had won the first Test at Lord's by 150 runs (ANI)

Latif in Kabul to coach Afghan cricket team

Sun, Jul 25 10 04:27 PM

Karachi, Jul 25 (PTI) Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif is in war-ravaged Kabul to start his coaching assignment with the Afghanistan cricket team but claims that security is hardly a concern for him. Latif, a former wicketkeeper-batsman, accepted an offer to become the batting coach of the emerging Afghanistan team and will work with them in Jalalabad before accompanying them on a tour to Scotland. "I am in Kabul and this coaching assignment is a challenging one for me. I have played lot of cricket and done lot of coaching but this represents a new challenge for me," Latif told PTI. The former Pakistan skipper said he had no concerns about his safety. "That is not my concern I am being well looked after and my job is to focus on the coaching assignment," he said. Kabir Khan, a former Pakistan Test bowler, is the head coach of the Afghanistan team which qualified for the Twenty20 World Cup this year and also has the one-day international status. Some of the Afghan players have developed their cricketing skills as refugees in Pakistan. Latif said he saw a lot of talent in the Afghanistan team and was confident that with some specialised coaching, the team had the capability to move up. "The players are very keen to do well for their country, they have lot of pride and energy and that is a great sign," Latif said. The ICC and the Asian Cricket Council have been investing a lot in Afghanistan in the last few years to develop and set up infrastructure in a country that has been hit by conflict for the last two decades.

Win over Australia is beginning of a new era: Waqar

Sun, Jul 25 10 04:21 PM

Karachi, Jul 25 (PTI) Pakistan''s cricket coach Waqar Younis believes that his team''s first Test win over Australia in 15 years is the beginning of a new era for the game in the troubled country. Waqar said from London that the hard-earned victory in Headingly showed that the "new culture" which has been introduced in the Pakistan dressing room has started to bear fruit. "All the players have been told clearly that no one is allowed any personal agenda in the dressing room. Every player has to play for the team and for the country and we don''t expect anything less from anyone," Waqar said. "Clear guidelines have been laid out that if any player tries to spoil the dressing room or team environment he will have to face severe consequences," he added. The former Test captain, who took over as coach after the troubled Australian tour, said what had happened in the past is now history. "Now no one is allowed to have his own personal agenda except performance. Because at the end of the day we owe it to the Pakistani nation to deliver. No one can win all the time and no one expects us to win all the time. But we must give our best in every match, we must show commitment as a team," he said. Waqar, who was bowling coach on the Australian tour in the aftermath of which the cricket board banned or fined seven players for indiscipline and misconduct, said he was happy that the board was also backing the team management on disciplinary issues. "There has to be discipline in the team and there is a change taking place in the dressing room and that is why I say this narrow win is a good start for us," he said. Waqar said he was satisfied with the performance of young players like Muhammad Aamer, Umar Akmal, Umar Amin and Azhar Ali. "I think players must know they will get a fair chance to establish themselves and they will perform if they have talent. Aamer no doubt is one of the most exciting finds in Pakistan cricket for a while now, he bowled brilliantly in spells at Leeds," he said. Waqar said captain Salman Butt had led the team maturely and scored crucial runs and that mattered a lot.

Hockey coach questions Basavaraj's role

Published>Sun, Jul 25 10 04:07 PM

Chennai, July 25 (IANS) Ramesh Parameswaran, former assistant coach of the Indian men's hockey team, has hinted that politics played a major role in Basavaraj, who was involved in a sex scandal, being 'promoted' from a still photographer to a videographer to a video analyst of the national women's squad.

Parameswaran, who was assistant to national coaches Vasudevan Baskaran and then Joaquim Carvalho for over a decade, said: 'Basavaraj was basically a photographer assigned by the Sports Authority of India to take pictures of players for visa purposes. He had no other role to play.'

'My question is very simple: How does an ordinary photographer become a videographer and a video analyst attached to the Indian team with absolutely no hockey background? Obviously, there is more to it than meets the eye,' Parameswaran told IANS.

Basavaraj was suspended last week after publication of pictures that allegedly showed him in a 'compromising position' with an unnamed female.

He was associated with the women's team whose coach M.K. Kaushik, too, is named in a sexual harassment scandal following complaints by a player. Kaushik has since resigned his post, while claiming innocence.

'It is imperative that the authorities appoint qualified persons for such critical positions like a video analyst so that the person can provide inputs to enhance the performance of the players and the team. The antecedents and credentials of candidates should be thoroughly checked before sending the person with the national team,' Parameswaran added.

England stick with Morgan, no place for Bopara

England's Eoin Morgan poses for a photograph in London in this May 25, 2010 file...

Sun, Jul 25 10 03:57 PM

Eoin Morgan has kept his place in the England squad for the first test against Pakistan at Trent Bridge starting on Thursday, edging out Ravi Bopara despite his back-to-back centuries in a recent game with Yorkshire.

Morgan, an exciting one-day batsman, got his first chance in the long format of the game in a two-test series against Bangladesh and if he performs well could have a role to play in the Ashes later this year.

All-rounder Paul Collingwood and paceman Stuart Broad are back after being rested for the Bangladesh test series. Batsman Ian Bell is still recovering from a broken bone in his foot.

"Ian's absence provides other batsmen with the chance to impress against a world-class Pakistan bowling attack," national selector Geoff Miller said in a media release on Sunday.

Pakistan go into the match on a high after ending a long losing run against Australia with a three-wicket victory at Headingley on Saturday to square the series 1-1.

England squad: Andrew Strauss (capt), James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Paul Collingwood, Alastair Cook, Steven Finn, Eoin Morgan, Kevin Pietersen, Matt Prior, Ajmal Shahzad, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott.
