Tiger Woods likens marriage break-up to dad's death

Published>Thu, Jul 08 10 12:07 PM

London, July 8 (ANI): Tiger Woods has likened spilt from wife Elin to the pain he suffered when his father and mentor Earl died of cancer at the age of 74 in 2006.

"There are times in one's life when things get put into perspective," the Sun quoted him as saying.

"One being when my father passed and another what I've been going through lately," he added.

While refusing to comment directly on the split, he said: "Everything is working out."

Tiger spoke after playing in the JP McManus Pro-Am contest at Adare Manor in Limerick, Ireland.

He even revealed that he would return to the US first.

The dad-of-two said: "I need to get home to see my kids." (ANI)

Brazilian soccer player accused of kidnapping surrenders

Published>Thu, Jul 08 10 11:47 AM

Rio de Janeiro, July 8 (IANS/EFE) A Brazilian professional soccer player, suspected in the disappearance of a former mistress who claimed he fathered her child, surrendered to police here, authorities said.

Bruno Fernandes, the goalkeeper for Brazil's most popular club Flamengo, turned himself in Wednesday along with his friend and fellow suspect Luiz Henrique Ferreira Romao at a police station in the neighbourhood of Andarai town, police said.

The player's wife, Dayane Souza, also a suspect in the case, was arrested earlier.

Police said that the Flamengo goalie was arrested in connection with the kidnap of 25-year-old Eliza Samudio, who has been missing since early June.

The player's 17-year-old cousin said in a police interrogation that Samudio, a model, is dead, but he did not say who killed her or where her body might be found.

The young man arrested Tuesday admitted to participating with Romao in kidnapping Samudio, who had been demanding that the player acknowledge his paternity of her 4-month-old son.

He said that the model was placed by force into a Fernandes' car and added that he hit the woman on the head with a pistol after she had an argument with Romao.

A DNA test released Wednesday confirmed that the traces of blood found in Fernandes' car belonged to Samudio.

Meanwhile, Flamengo removed the player from its official roster until the case is resolved.

Puyol winner takes Spain to maiden World Cup final

Published>Thu, Jul 08 10 11:45 AM

Spain scripted history by qualifying for their maiden World Cup final since their first appearance 76 years ago with a 1-0 victory over three-time champions Germany to set up a summit clash against the Netherlands here today.

Central defender Carles Puyol scored the winner in the 73rd minute, heading home a corner in an absorbing semifinal which though lacked the spark in terms of goals and scoring chances, at the Mabhida Moses Stadium.

Spain's best show in a World Cup before today had been a fourth-place finish in 1950 but at that time the champion team was decided after a final round league format.

Vicente Del Bosque's 'La Furia Roja' side will now take on the Netherlands at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg on July 11 in the grand finale which will saw a new World Cup winner being crowned.

Spain and the Netherlands, both world football's underachievers, had never won a World Cup. The former had two European Championships titles -- in 1964 and 2008 -- in their kitty while the latter had been the losing finalists in the 1974 and 1978 World Cup. The Dutch had also won the European Championships title in 1988.

Germany will now play Uruguay in the third-place play-off match at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on July 10.

Germany were the tournament's most impressive side with their fast-paced, all-the-time moving and chasing style and clinical finishing.

But today, they failed to produce their menacing form which saw them humble former champions England and Argentina 4-1 and 4-0 respectively in the earlier stages.

Playing in their first semifinal in 13 World Cup appearances since 1934, Spain dominated for most part of the match and enjoyed a majority of possession, dishing out their'passing carousal' made famous by Barcelona FC whose eight players made it to the starting line-up today.

In a repeat of the Euro 2008 final in Vienna, the match ended with the same scoreline and with the same victors. Six players of each side's starting line-up today were in the first XI in Vienna two years ago.

German lost in the battle of midfield, with Bastian Schweinsteiger and the Co. failing for the second time -- after their 0-1 loss to Serbia in group stages -- to dictate terms on their opponents as they were not given the space to maneuver by the Spaniards.

On the other hand, Andre Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez, two of the main proponents of passing carousal, were all over the centre of the park, untirelessly holding the ball, supplying and taking shots themselves.

Barcelona forward Pedro Rodriguez, who started in place of out-of-form Fernando Torres, was outstanding in the upfront weaving his way through German defenders from the right many a times to create havoc in the opposition goal.

He was though guilty of not releasing the ball for Torres, who came in towards the end of the match as substitute for a subdued David Villa, who was alone with the German keeper Manuel Neuer after a Spanish counterattack.

Spain had two chances inside 15 minutes. First, David Villa toe-poked a Pedro pass in the sixth minute but found an advancing German keeper blocking it in the sixth minute and eight minutes later a Puyol header off an Iniesta cross from the right skied over the bar.

Germany had their first chance in the 32nd minute with Piotr Trochowski, who made it to the starting line-up in place of suspended Thomas Mueller, sent a low left footer off around 30 metres but Spain keeper and captain Iker Casillas dived to his left to deflect it for a corner.

After an intense first half, Spain came out to continue their domination in the second session. Two Xabi Alonso long rangers in the early minutes of second session, one off a pass by Pedro and the other by Xavi Hernandez, went off the target.

Two minutes before the hour mark, German defence was on seize for a while with Spain getting two chances in quick succession.

Following their characteristic slow build-up using small passes, Pedro struck a right footer from just outside the box but the German keeper was equal to the task blocking the shot by diving to his right.

Spanish danger was still on with Iniesta cutting through the left side of German box but his ground cross across the goal narrowly missed the outstretched legs of Villa.

German though had a golden chance to break Spanish hearts in the 69th minute. But Toni Kroos, who came in for Trochowski in the 62nd minute, shot straight to Casillas in a one-on-one situation off a pass by Lukas Podolski.

The relentless grind of the German defence resulted to the winner in the 73rd minute with Puyol heading in a Xavi Hernanndez corner and Spanish supporters erupted in joy.

The Germans were known for many a famous fightback but Jochim Loew's side, touted by many as one of the best sides in their World Cup history, could not emulate their countrymates of yesteryears.

They pressed hard but not to speak of an equaliser they did not even get a clear chance in the remaining 17 minutes of normal time and subsequent three-minute injury time.

Striker Miroslav Klose though still have a chance to equal and even surpass Brazillian Ronaldo's most number of World Cup goals in Germany's third-place match against Uruguay on July 10. Klose has scored 14 World Cup goals as against 15of Ronaldo.

Flat stage could suit Cavendish in quest for a win

Published Thu, Jul 08 10 09:37 AM

With the green jersey already an elusive dream, sprinter Mark Cavendish now has to set his sights on a stage win on the Tour de France, starting with Thursday's relatively flat 183.5-km ride from Epernay to Montargis.

The Briton, who took six stages in last year's race, has been struggling for form since the Tour started in Rotterdam last Saturday.

He trails Norwegian Thor Hushovd by 65 points in the points classifications, with Italian Alessandro Petacchi, twice a winner on the Tour, 55 ahead of the Isle of Man rider.

His HTC-Columbia team, however, are confident Cavendish, who has only three wins under his belt this season, will take the laurels at least once in the race.

"He will win a stage. He is tough, he has good legs and he will take a stage in this Tour de France," said his Australian team mate Mark Renshaw.

Puyol 'the shark' an unlikely Spanish hero

Published>Thu, Jul 08 10 08:41 AM

Spain defender Carles Puyol stepped up to become the unlikely hero in their 1-0 World Cup semi-final win against Germany on Wednesday in a team packed with talent such as David Villa and Andres Iniesta.

With the clock ticking towards added time in a tense encounter, the shaggy-haired centre back rose above the defence and crashed a 73rd-minute header into the net to send the European champions into Sunday's showpiece with Netherlands.

It was the 32-year-old's third international goal in his 89th appearance and puts Spain in their first World Cup final.

"Puyol the shark has taken us to the final," his jubilant Barcelona team mate David Villa, who is joint top scorer at the tournament in South Africa with five goals, told reporters.

Puyol's all-round performance was "spectacular", Villa said while midfielder Xabi Alonso added: "There were 10 minutes where we were camped outside their penalty area but didn't score and then Puyol arrived like a young wild boar and scored."

Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who is a Barcelona fan, added his voice to the acclaim, telling Spanish radio: "What a leap, what a header by Puyol! He is superb."

Germany coach Joachim Loew criticised his team for not picking out Puyol's run into the area but acknowledged the "massive power" and "great determination" he demonstrated.

"This was a set piece and there's always a mistake if you concede a goal at a set piece," Loew said at a news conference.

"There were two of our defenders somewhere close and we should have anticipated the ball," he added.

"We didn't do that ... and Puyol approached us too quickly and thumped the ball in."

Soccer boosts sex tourism in Cape Town

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 02:37 PM

Cape Town, July 7 (IANS) With a million football fans splurging thousands of dollars during the World Cup, sex tourism in South Africa's number one tourist destination, Cape Town, is at an all time high.

Be it the famous Long Street, the exotic Sea Point or the breathtaking Waterfront, sex workers are having a heyday at the popular spots of this beautiful port city, famous for the Table Top Mountain.

As the sun sets in this Mother City - that's what South Africans prefer to call it - party fever rises and soccer fans venture out to glitzy bars to have their flings.

'Long Street is the most happening street in this city as the bars stay open till late in the night. So you can have all sorts of entertainment. Flings are common and fans are not afraid of taking a risk,' said Peter Andre, a British fan.

The lodges and the backpackers' inns in the city centre are overflowing with Dutch and Uruguayan supporters and that's where business is booming.

'In this part of the world you have to be very careful. The best thing is that there are no fixed rates and you can bargain,' Rafel de Villiers, a Dutch fan, who stays in a backpackers lodge on Long Street, told IANS.

Long Street was once famous for sex workers and drug dealers. While the local authorities have come down hard on the latter, they have been able to do little to rein in prostitution.

From the streets, sex workers have made their way into the bars. They bribe the bouncers and get easy entry into bars for potential clients.

But sex workers now fear business will not be as good as it was for the last one month.

'Business was good. And several sex workers from nearby countries also made their way into Cape Town. But we fear it won't be as good after the World Cup. During the World Cup we used to get three to four clients everyday,' said Aneqaah who runs an escort agency.

'We had a huge demand for white and coloured girls because all the fans who came here were from European countries. We got the best deals from British fans,' she added.

The authorities have run a campaign during World Cup to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS in the city, with South Africa having the highest incidence of the disease in the world.

'We talk about responsibility, but not much of this is about tangible action. The tourism industry has the opportunity to spread a huge amount of awareness about responsible tourism,' said Cape Town Tourism CEO Mariette du Troit-Helmbold.

'We want locals and visitors to have fun during the World Cup, but to remain responsible while having fun by practicing safe and responsible sex.'

A total number of 160,000 condoms were distributed in 30 Cape Town accommodation establishments during the period of the World Cup by Cape Town Tourism.

One of these was the famous Daddy Long Legs Boutique Backpackers, which is now brimming with European soccer fans. The hotel authorities were the first to engage with the project and have boldly distributed condoms.

'Our philosophy at the Grand Daddy Group is to have fun, but we are aware of the fact that having fun creates risk. This is why it is very important for us to help create awareness about the very serious issue of HIV/AIDS that we face globally,' said Sergio Dreyer, general manager of the Grand Daddy Group.

While sex and soccer went hand in hand during the World Cup, the controversial subject has sparked heated debate over legalising the profession throughout the country.

Many non-profit groups have complained that South Africa should use this global event to step up its fight against HIV/AIDS. But many say they are being blocked along the way.

South African AIDS organisations have accused football's governing body FIFA of blocking access to condoms and HIV education materials at World Cup stadiums and fan parks.

'To date FIFA has not permitted any civil society organization to distribute HIV or health-related information,' claimed the AIDS Consortium, the Southern African HIV Clinicians Society and several other organisations in a statement.

Mallya believes podium possible in Spa and Monza

Published Wed, Jul 07 10 02:21 PM

Silverstone (UK), Jun 7 (PTI) Force India Chairman Vijay Mallya is expecting both Adrian Sutil and Vitantonio Liuzzi to be among points in Sunday''s British Grand Prix and reckons a podium finish is possible in Spa and Monza. Dwelling on Sunday''s race at the Silverstone Circuit, just metres away from the team''s factory, Mallya said Force India has some updates and he was looking for a fruitful outing for both the cars. "It''s a very big weekend, and obviously Silverstone is where we really want to perform well. It''s the home race for us now and there''s a lot of involvement from the guys in the factory, and the whole team enjoys the race weekend," Mallya said. "We''ve got a little update coming, over and above what we had in Valencia, and hopefully we can bring both cars home well into the points. Clearly this car is better than anything we''ve had at Silverstone in many years," said Mallya, also the team principal. Sunday''s race will mark the halfway point of 2010 Championship and Mallya is optimistic that Force India has realistic chances of podium finishes in the Belgian and Italian Grands Prix. "I''ve said before that the objective of 2010 was to regularly score points and I think we''re meeting that objective," Mallya said. "Spa and Monza are tracks that will suit the car better, and if we can get a podium, that would be the icing on the cake. But if not, at least we''re demonstrating that we''re scoring points. We''re up to 43 now, and this team hasn''t done as well in a long while," he added. Mallya''s sentiments found echo in Sutil who said in tracks more conducive to his car, he can do even better than his sixth place finish in Valencia. "Sixth position in the end was very good for us and really a reflection of where we are in the field now. There are some tracks where we might even be a bit higher up but we are right there close to the front and anything from third to sixth is always a possibility," Sutil said. Talking about Sunday''s race, Sutil said, "We have some new developments, I would say a very similar step to Valencia, around the front wing and floor. As we saw last year, every update we put on - whether large or small - does move us forward so I think it will put us in a similar position to Valencia, top 10, higher if we can. "We''ve also got the SRW working really well now too so the combination of the new parts and the extra top speed makes me feel quite confident going into this race," he added. PTI AY PM

Caffeine pills could hinder football players performance, not boost it: WADA

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 02:17 PM

Sydney, July 7 (ANI): Footballers doping up on caffeine pills could be hindering their performance - not boosting it.

According to a World Anti-Doping Agency research, caffeine can be counterproductive on the field.

The Herald Sun quotes sports doctor Peter Larkins as saying that the threshold identified could be equal to as few as four No-Doz tablets or several cups of coffee, depending on the player's size and metabolism.

AFL players, including St Kilda's Lenny Hayes, have admitted taking up to six No-Doz in a game.

Until 2005, elevated caffeine readings were a breach of the WADA code, which the AFL follows.

WADA changed its mind after discovering "caffeine is performance-decreasing above the 12 microgram/ml threshold (in urine) that was historically used in sport".

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority yesterday said caffeine remained on a WADA "monitoring program" to detect patterns of misuse. (ANI)

Ronaldo 'paid ?10 mn to his baby's mum'

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 02:01 PM

Soccer ace Cristiano Ronaldo has paid a whopping 10 million pounds to the mother of his baby in order to buy her silence, according to pals.

The 25-year-old is said to have transferred the amount to her in return for her giving up any rights to see the child and swearing her to total secrecy.

"He paid nearly a year's wages but it's more than worth it. He's called it the most expensive day of his life, but at least he has sole custody," the Sun quoted a source as saying.

Even Ronaldo's son will not know the identity of his mother until he is old enough to understand.

A source described the mum as 'a party girl' and not someone the footballer would 'settle down' with.

But rumours are abuzz that she is an American surrogate mum - and the pregnancy was deliberate.

The baby boy - born on June 17 - is staying with Ronaldo's family in Portugal's Algarve.

He wants his mum Dolores and sister to help raise his son.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo has dismissed rumours that his lingerie model girlfriend Irina Shayk, 24, is upset over the child.

Clarke, Waqar salute 'amazing' Murali

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 01:53 PM

Praise has started coming in from across the world for Muttiah Muralitharan after he set a date for his retirement, even Australia, where he has been uncompromisingly criticised and reviled for years.

Australia's Michael Clarke paid tribute to Muttiah Muralitharan after the prolific bowler announced his intention to retire from Test cricket, saying the Sri Lanka off-spinner was an "amazing player".

A Sri Lanka Cricket statement issued yesterday said the 38-year-old had decided to quit Tests after the home series opener against India in Galle starting on July 18.

Muralitharan is the most successful bowler in international cricket history with record hauls in both Tests (792 wickets) and one-day formats (515).

Clarke, speaking after Australia's 2-0 series losing 11-run defeat by Pakistan in the second Twenty20 international here at Edgbaston yesterday, joked Muralitharan's decision was a reflection of the bowler's belief in his ability to take the eight Tests wickets he needed for 800 in a single match.

"How many wickets has he got? 792. He's confident then, one more Test. I think he is an amazing player," Australia's Twenty20 captain added.

"Over a long period of time, statistics don't lie," the top-order batsman insisted. "I think a lot of batters around the world will be very happy they don't have to face him anymore.

"I guess on behalf of all Australia cricketers, and all Australian fans who've had the opportunity to watch him, congratulations are well and truly deserved. He's been an amazing ambassador for Sri Lankan cricket and what a talent, what a career. I really hope he gets those eight wickets."

Murali has had an uneasy relationship with Australian cricket.

His unorthodox action has been a repeated source of controversy, especially in Australia where former prime minister John Howard once agreed Murali was a "chucker" when asked about the spinner's bowling style.

It was a comment many believe played a part in Howard's rejection last week by the International Cricket Council (ICC) board for the vice-presidency of the global governing body.

Murali's action first came under the microscope when Australian umpire Darrell Hair called him for throwing during Sri Lanka's tour Down Under in 1995-96.

But it was bio-mechanical analysis at the University of Western Australia, requested by the ICC, which concluded Murali's action created the "optical illusion of throwing".

However, former England captain Michael Atherton, who played alongside Murali at Lancashire, told Sky Sports: "It's a controversy that will always be linked with him.

"But, regardless of whether you think the arm straightened or not, it's still an incredibly skilful thing to do what he did - which is turn it the amount he did, bowl it with the accuracy he did, have the stamina he did."

Former opener Atherton added: "It's certainly an unorthodox action.

"He bowled from wide of the crease, chest-on, kind of flicked it with his wrist and obviously the elbow as well.

"He caused the ICC to rewrite their regulations really so that now bowlers are allowed to straighten the angle of their arm by 15 degrees at delivery which is strictly against the laws of the game, but the regulations allow for it and that is really down to one man.

"Given those regulations it's impossible to say what is a throw and what is not," Atherton insisted.

Australian attitudes towards Muralitharan appear to have softened recently and Clarke said: "I think a lot of people have the utmost respect for him."

He added the only bowler to compare with Murali, in his experience, was now retired Australia leg-spin great Shane Warne.

"His performances are as good as anybody, apart in my eyes from Warnie, who I think is the greatest bowler of my time."

Warne and Murali are the only bowlers to have taken more than 700 Test wickets. "Who was better? I think for myself Warne was better," Atherton said. "I felt he had a better cricketing brain.

"But that's not to take anything away from Murali, who had a kind of freakish brilliance."

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis, who played against Murali, said: "The world is going to miss him. I really congratulate him for his superb career."

Murali though could still be playing one-dayers at next year's World Cup, where Sri Lanka are one of three Asian co-hosts.

But Clarke said: "As long as I don't have to face him again in Test cricket again, that's a good start."

As for anyone breaking Murali's Test record, Atherton said: "I think it was Fred Trueman who said when he'd taken 300 Test wickets (the late England quick was the first man to that landmark) that whoever beat him would be bloody tired. I think you can probably say the same about Murali."

Germany took pity on England after 4-1 score line, says Podolski

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 01:47 PM

London, Jul 7 (ANI): Germany striker Lukas Podolski has said that his side would still have thrashed England even if Frank Lampard's strike had been allowed and their last 16 match levelled at 2-2.

To add insult to injury, he even reckons that the Germans took pity on the Three Lions in the end instead of going all out for an even bigger win.

"People talked about England and the disallowed goal but it is nonsense to suggest that even if that had been allowed, we would have lost the game eventually," The Sun quoted Podolski, as saying.

"If anything we could have scored more goals. I tell you, after we had opened up a 4-1 lead we stood off England so, trust me, it could have been a lot worse for them," he said.

"I don't think people gave us enough credit for the way we played and took England apart. People were far more interested with what was wrong with England after a disastrous campaign," Podolski said.

"And no one really gave us credit for being far better than them. For me you don't beat a side 4-1 without being comprehensively better than them," he added. (ANI)

World has seen our efficiency during FIFA WC: Zuma

Published Wed, Jul 07 10 01:37 PM

Cape Town, Jul 7 (PTI) Successful hosting of the FIFA World Cup has helped South Africa market itself as an important global player, feels President Jacob Zuma. "They have seen the warm friendly people of our country, they have seen the precision when it comes to planning and arrangements and they have seen the efficiency when it comes to our security," Zuma said while addressing the leading investors from across the world yesterday. "We have had a most successful and exciting time in the last three weeks. It really has been an emotional roller-coaster for all the 32 teams competing," he added. Zuma highlighted the fact that situation has changed a lot in South Africa since its first democratic election 16 years ago and urged the fund managers to invest in the country. "A mere 20 years ago, nobody could want to come here. Apartheid seemed near impossible to overcome, but we did (overcome it). We did not give up. We overcame. "Africa is open for business, explore your opportunities and find new partners and find returns on your investment. It is a positive time," Zuma was quoted as saying in ''BuaNews''. The President also hoped that the football extravaganza would make lasting impact on education as well as new sports centres which FIFA had pledged to build. Besides, South Africa has made "good" returns from the event. Around 32 billion Rand has been spent on transport, infrastructure and telecoms and 66,000 jobs were created through the building of new stadiums. "I don''t think any would say no, if we say let us have the Olympics, because we have the facilities," said Zuma. He pointed out that Africa had performed better than most during the recent global economic meltdown. South Africa was a central market between the emerging economies of south-east Asia and South America and was also centrally placed for southern African countries, through the Southern African Customs Union (Sacu). Zuma hoped that the new global framework being drawn up by the Group of 20, of which South Africa is a member, would create new opportunities for economic growth. "We want to be seen as a development partner, as a partner to work with to transform international power relations," said Zuma.

Torres says transfer talks on hold till WC conclusion

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 01:23 PM

London, Jul 7 (ANI): Spanish striker Fernando Torres, who is being pursued by top clubs like Chelsea, Manchester City and Barcelona, has told Liverpool that he would not discuss his future until he is back from holidays.

Torres has told Liverpool: "I won't talk to you until after I've had a holiday."

"I want to finish the World Cup and go on holiday as I haven't had one for three years, rest and then there will be time to talk about all of that. The situation isn't going to change whether we talk soon or later," The Sun quoted him, as saying.

The ace striker, preparing for today's semi-final showdown with Germany, said: "Honestly, teams won't be able to do anything until the World Cup has finished. The players here prefer to wait - there is time."

Torres added: "The club will explain the real situation to me of how things are at present and in the future - and I will also talk to the new coach."

Liverpool and new coach Roy Hodgson would fight hard to keep hold of their star striker, although a bid of around 70 million pounds would be hard to knock back.

Chelsea is likely to make a move once Torres' World Cup duties are over. (ANI)

Aamer fires Pakistan to T20 series sweep over Australia

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 01:17 PM

Edgbaston, July 7(ANI): Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Aamer guided Pakistan to a 2-0 Twenty20 series win over Australia, as they won Tuesday's second and final game in Edgbaston by 11 runs.

Chasing 163 for victory, Aamer took three wickets for 27, as the Australians were bowled out for 151 with two balls left in the final over.

Aamer made important late runs and then removed Australia's openers, skipper Michael Clarke and David Warner.

Clarke, promoted to open the innings with Shane Watson rested, made a quickfire 30 off 17 balls to revive his Twenty20 career with the knock.

Clarke had not reached 30 in his past seven innings since the Twenty20 World Cup.

However, the quick dismissals of Clarke, Warner (1) and Tim Paine (0) had the Australian team struggling at 3-33.

Australia's middle-order appeared on track, with James Hopes (30), Dave Hussey (33) and Mike Hussey (25) trying to perform their customary rescue mission, but their efforts fell short by 11 runs, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar also chipped in with a wicket.

Earlier, choosing to bat first after winning the toss, Pakistan scored 9-162 in their 20 overs.

The Pakistani innings was bolstered by a 60-run second wicket stand between Salman Butt (31) and Kamran Akmal (33).

Skipper Shahid Afridi and Umar Akmal shared another key partnership of 30 runs.

An unbeaten 20 not out from Aamer, after Umar Akmal and Afridi were dismissed off successive balls was also valuable.

Debutant Australian spinner Steve O'Keefe was impressive taking three for 29 in his four overs.

O'Keefe has not played in the New South Wales Twenty20 side for nearly 18 months, but looked composed in his maiden international appearance.

With the series win, Pakistan will take some momentum into the two-match Test series starting at Lord's next week.

Brief scorecard:

Pakistan-- 162 for 9 (Kamran Akmal 33, O'Keefe 3-29, Nannes 3-30)

Australia-- 151 (D Hussey 33, Aamer 3-27) (ANI)

Woods angrily fends off querries relating to his private life

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 01:07 PM

Florida (US0, July 7 (ANI): Anger apparently simmered in golfer Tiger Woods eyes as he interacted with media over issues relating to his private life.

The world No 1 was at his staccato, excruciating worst fending off questions about why he was heading home so soon, reports The Age.

Pressed on why he would not be refining his links golf technique before next week's Open Championship at St Andrews, he replied: "Because I need to go home."

Asked if his abrupt departure for Orlando was due to "personal stuff", he said, tersely: "To see my kids".

The most uncomfortable silence occurred as a reporter wondered aloud if Woods felt that all his misdemeanours had been worth it, in light of his ragged form since returning to the game.

He interjected: "I think you are reading too much into this."

For those hoping for the humility he had promised to show, this was a dispiriting reversion to type.

Woods has failed to win any of the six events he has entered after becoming embroiled in a sex scandal and there are suspicions, with his marriage to Elin Nordegren understood to be on the verge of collapse, that golf has become a relative triviality in his life.

"Golf is something that I've done for a very long time, and there are times in one's life when things get put into perspective," he admitted.

"One being when my father passed away, and obviously with what I have been going through lately."

But Woods could not avoid the fact that, before last month's US Open at Pebble Beach, he had expressed his wish that every major was contested at St Andrews. (ANI)

Football team tackles German perceptions of integration

Published>Wed, Jul 07 10 12:37 PM

Berlin, July 7 (DPA) At this year's World Cup, Germany has been enraptured by a national football team in which almost half the players are from an immigrant background.

Eleven of the 23-man squad were either born outside Germany or are German-born but with roots elsewhere.

This may come as a surprise within Germany, according to migration expert Klaus Bade, who thinks the country's history still makes it difficult for Germans to deal with the foreigners living in their midst.

'There's a great collective insecurity over the subject of integration,' the professor said in an interview with DPA.

And yet, Bade said his country should be proud of managing to peacefully integrate large groups of immigrants. 'Germany is far more successful than it thinks.'

Chancellor Angela Merkel has described Germany's 'international team' in the World Cup as a symbol of successful integration, while people from all ethnic backgrounds have celebrated the German goals.

The country's largest flag was raised in Berlin by 39-year-old Ibrahim Bassal, who fled the Lebanese civil war 25 years ago. Ironically, he was threatened by left-wing extremists who were upset by such a display of nationalism.

Despite such visible examples of integration, Bade said Germany still faced key problems, in particular low standards of education in immigrant communities and the growth of an ethnically defined underclass.

'These two issues absolutely must be resolved, otherwise they will lead to problems that could threaten social peace in Germany,' said the head of Germany's Expert Council of Foundations for Integration and Migration (SVR).

The causes, he believed, stem from Germany's difficult history and a resulting lack of national pride, after the atrocities of two world wars.

Unlike France or the US, Bade said Germany lacked a sense of confidence and greatness for immigrants to identify with and aspire to.

In contrast, he pointed out that Germany's large Turkish population respected and honoured the 'great country and tradition' of their homeland.

'We're proud of being Turkish, are you proud of being German? No, you're somehow embarrassed to be German,' Bade paraphrased their attitude.

Germany's main waves of immigration occurred during the 1960s-70s, when so-called guest workers were invited from southern and eastern Europe and Turkey during the economic boom. Expected to return home, many were followed by their families and settled in Germany.

While Germany belatedly realised that German nationality was a passport to integration for second- and third-generation immigrants, Bade said the country had failed to make the option appealing.

After living in Germany for eight years, foreigners receive full social, economic and legal rights. But crucially, non-EU citizens who are eligible for German nationality must renounce their original citizenship in the process.

By ruling out dual citizenship, Bade said Germany was presenting migrants with a choice the country could not afford.

'Germany can no longer choose its immigrants, as they are already there - and have been for decades. The Germans simply didn't notice,' he said.

In addition, he said the country was now reliant on these people as Germany's ageing population and drop in birth rates meant there would be a shortage of 3 million workers by 2015.

Having finally woken up to the issue, Bade said it was too late to entice foreigners with German nationality, which offered little more than the ability to vote for the federal government.

In Bade's words, a common response was, 'Even if I am German I won't get the job, because my name is Mechmed and not Hans'.

This turns to another key issue, as an ethnically defined sense of German nationality has further dogged integration.

'Many people carry the notion that you can be German, but not become German,' Bade said.

As a result, people with foreign roots who have lived in Germany all their lives are often irked when they are complemented on their language abilities, or asked where they 'originally' come from.

Bade believes that this tendency to define people by their otherness has set additional barriers to Muslim integration.

'Germans need to learn that a Muslim is not first and foremost a Muslim,' the migration expert said.

He referred to surveys in which Muslim families were asked what was important to them. The answers usually included their children's education, a stable job or being able to go on holiday - but not their ability to visit a mosque.

At the same time, Bade said it was commonplace in Germany to hear people praise their friendly Muslim greengrocer - or indeed the national footballer with a Turkish name - while also viewing Islam as a dangerous threat.

On an upbeat note, Bade said the situation was steadily improving.

'The relationship of Germans towards immigrants is getting progressively more relaxed, pragmatic and positive,' he said.

Germany's World Cup performance by a young, talented football team has set a further example of ways in which Turkish, Nigerian, Polish, Ghanaian, Brazilian, Spanish, Tunisian and Bosnia-Herzegovinan talent can benefit the nation.
