Wales delighted to notice "impressive transition" at C'wealth Games Village

Published>Sat, Oct 02 10 08:52 PM

New Delhi, Oct. 2 (ANI): Wales Chef de Mission Chris Jenkins on Saturday expressed his satisfaction with the "fantastic timing" of getting the Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi Village ready to welcome the international athletes.

Stating his observation of the state of affairs at the Commmonwealth Games Village, Jenkins said, "I am really quite impressed with the transition. I had come here two weeks ago and thing were really quite chaotic. But the athletes who came here three days ago are absolutely delighted with the residential wings and also the training facilities. The food is also quite good."

"The venues are outstanding and we are really looking forward to competing there," he added.

The team is hoping to double its Gold medal count at Delhi 2010.

According to team manager Brian Davies, Wales would look to at least double its haul of three gold medals won at the previous Games at Melbourne.

Wales has come in with about 150 athletes. They will participate in archery, badminton, lawn bowls, wrestling, women's hockey, shooting and table tennis.

Wales first took part in the Commonwealth Games (then the British Empire Games) in the inaugural 1930 edition and has since taken part in all of them. Their best showing came in the Auckland Games in 1990 where they finished with a haul of 25 medals including 10 gold.

In Melbourne, Wales bagged 19 medals but only three of them gold.

One of those hoping to add to this tally is David Phelps, Melbourne CWG gold medallist.

According to him, representing Wales in the Commonwealth Games was always preferable to representing Britain since the Commonwealth Games is the only competition where Wales represents itself as a country. Team Wales, therefore, never contemplated a pull out or even a readjusting of travel plans.

Asked about the top medal prospects, Davies, Wales, apart from defending champions Michaela Breeze (women's weightlifting), long distance swimming great David Davies who will compete in 400m and 1500m freestyle and Phelps, also picked rising 21-year-old discus star Bratt Morse and athlete Christian Malcolm (men's 200m) as probable contenders. P.T. Usha upset at not being invited to Games opening ceremony

Published>Sat, Oct 02 10 08:46 PM

Kozhikode (Kerala), Oct 2 (IANS) A day before the Commonwealth Games begin in Delhi, sprint queen P.T. Usha is upset at the organisers having failed to invite to the opening ceremony many Indian athletes who brought glory to the country.

Speaking to IANS, the 'Payyoli Express' -- as Usha was known -- said this treatment meted out to yesteryear athletics greats is 'not at all good for Indian sports'.

'The only time that the Indian national anthem is played outside the country is when sportspersons like us win medals or when the Indian president visits. I checked up with quite a few former athletes like Vandana Rao, Jyotirmoyee Sikdar, M.D. Valsamma and none of them have been invited for the opening ceremony,' she said.

She said that she heard from the media that K.M. Beenamol also has not been invited.

'When this issue was taken up by the media, the Organising Committee - I heard through the media - said Usha needs no invitation because she is part of the Indian athletic team as her ward Tintu Luka is taking part in the 800 metres. See, I got into the Indian team because of my merit and for that, I don't need the gratis of them,' said an angry Usha.

Luka has been a student of the P.T. Usha School of Athletics near here.

'Her event is on Oct 9 of this month and athletics do not begin till Oct 6, so why should I go there before that. This treatment meted out to us especially athletes who have brought lot of glory to the country is not good,' said Usha.

'It is not that I am cribbing that I want to see the opening ceremony. I have taken part in numerous ceremonies, but when an event like this is held in our country and we are not being invited, it sends bad signals to budding sportspersons,' she said.

CWG Federation General Assembly commends OC's efforts ahead of opening ceremony

Published>Sat, Oct 02 10 08:26 PM

New Delhi, Oct.2 (ANI): Commonwealth Games Federation General Assembly on Saturday unanimously passed a resolution commending the efforts of Commonwealth Games 2010 Delhi's Organising Committee (OC) to get things ready for the celebrations of the opening ceremony on Sunday.

CGF President Mike Fennell moved a resolution, "praising the Organising Committee" for bringing things under control before the arrival of the athletes and "brining the Games back to the highest degree of excellence."

The resolution was passed unanimously and greeted with applause.

The Commonwealth Games Associations (CGAs) of the 71 nations and territories taking part in Delhi 2010, especially appreciated the efforts in readying the Games Village for use by the 6800 athletes and team officials.

On this occasion Fennell said that this would be the largest Games in the history of the Commonwealth Games, surpassing the participation in Melbourne 2006 by over one thousand.

The CGAs noted that that the athletes were enjoying the facilities in the Village and stated that they were highly satisfied with the catering at the Games Village and the facilities for training.

They also noted that most of the things, including technology, are in place for the smooth and successful conduct of the Games.

Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi, on this occasion, said that he was thankful to the CGF and the CGAs for their unstinted support.

"The fact that we will have the participation of 6800 athletes and team officials from all 71 nations and territories indicates the love they have for India," he said. "We are on course to deliver the Games successfully and smoothly," said Kalmadi.

Meanwhile, the organising committee made a presentation focussing on the technical conduct of the Games, venue operations, village operations, sports equipment, international technical officials and celebrations in the city.

It was well-received by the members of the General Assembly. (ANI)

Kurup, new young poets bring Malayalam poetry to centre-stage

Published>Sat, Oct 02 10 08:16 PM

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 2 (IANS) Poetry is making a comeback to the mainstream Malayali literature with more youngsters writing, reading and appreciating poetry.

The conferring of the Jnanpith award, one of the highest literary honours, upon veteran Kerala-based poet O.N.V Kurup has come as a shot in the arm for the genre across the state - with new poets emerging from their literary cloisters, writers said.

'At a time when poetry was thought to be dying, the Kovalam Literary Festival has honoured the genre by inviting a poet to chair the inaugural session,' Kurup said, addressing the inaugural ceremony of the festival here Saturday.

He urged organisers of literary festivals in the state - especially the Kovalam Literary Festival - to 'focus on the poet who sings of the paradise and the pandemonium'. Poetry should come out of the 'hot house' to make its power of healing felt, he added.

Kurup quoted poet Emily Dickenson to illustrate the power of poetry saying: 'If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain.'

The poet then recited one of his self-composed and translated poem 'Crystals of Salt'.

Young Dubai-based Malayali poet Saheera Thangal, who was honoured with the Emerging Writer's award at the opening ceremony by Kerala Education and Culture Minister M.A. Baby, is ready with her second collection of poems 'Ashrama Kannayaka (The Hermitage Girl)' about 'emotional and feminine power'.

Her first collection of poetry, 'Nyanenna Ottavara (Me a Single Line)' has received an overwhelming response.

'It included poems on intense feelings of love, pleasure, sex, social elements and femininity. They have been compared to Kamala Das' English poetry by critics and reviewers,' Thangal, an advertising executive and mother of two, told IANS.

She is inspired by bilingual Malayalam poet and translator Sachidanandan and poetess Kamala Suraiya.

Thangal, who began to write poetry at 13, said 'the resurgence in the love for Malayalam poetry can be put to the honour bestowed on Kurup by the central government'.

'It shows that we still have faith in poetry. O.N.V. Kurup has been experimenting with poetry even at his age (83). A poet must have a poetic mind unlike a story teller,' she said.

Thangal said a legion of contemporary poets with modern sensibilities like Rafiq Ahmad, also a lyricist, Arya Gopi, P.K. Gopi, V.M. Girija, E.J. Joseph and Sebastian were 'writing powerful poetry'.

'But the volume of translation of Malayalam poetry to English was paltry compared to the amount of poetry being written. It applies to every Malayalam literary genre,' she said.

According to writer Paul Zacharia, the issues that have driven the movement of Malayalam poetry 'are human interiors (state of beings), relationships, ideological conflicts and the changes in the Left politics'.

'The crash of Left ideology has affected veteran writers who had invested all that they believed in it. They have become orphans,' Zacharia told IANS.

Even Kurup, who had once been an old-time Left wing poet and lyricist, switched to themes like ecology. 'Kurup is loved because he writes about love and finer emotional nuances,' Zacharia said.

Poetess, translator and editor Sumeetha M. said: 'The poetry movement in Kerala was always there'. 'The realities that poets address gives Malayalam poetry a distinct identity,' she said.

The 45-year-old poet loves to read poetry by G. Shankara Kurup, who won the first Jnanpith award in 1965.

The Internet has become an important catalyst in carrying Malayalam poetry to the world. 'Bloggers' groups and Facebook communes produce quality poetry by young Malayalee poets both in India and abroad,' Smitha M, who is pursuing her doctoral degree in film studies in Kerala University, told IANS.

Vernacular news dailies also devote space to poetry, she said.

The movement of modern poetry in Kerala coincides with the growth of Leftism, though classical poetry can be traced back to the combination of Sanskrit and Tamil literature (Manipravalam) that flourished in the state during the medieval age.

Snubbed Younus opens photo studio to "divert mind, utilise time"

Published>Sat, Oct 02 10 02:16 PM

Karachi, Oct 2 (ANI): Dejected after repeatedly being sidelined by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the national selectors, former skipper Younus Khan has opened a photo studio in order to "divert his mind" away from the game and make productive use of his time.

Younus, who has not been selected in the Pakistan squad since the One-day International (ODI) series in Australia back in February, has taken over a photo-shop business in Karachi where he is residing these days, the Daily Times reported.

"Yes I have started this photo-shop business. It is called 'Bambino Photo Studio'. It allows me to divert my mind and spend my time productively," confirmed the out of favour batsman.

"A close friend first had the shop and was going away after which I took it over and I am now rebuilding the studio and starting the business afresh. It has attracted me because photography has always fascinated me and it is a good business venture," he added.

He was also continuing his hobby of fishing regularly, said Younus, but made it clear that he had not given up hope of playing for Pakistan again.

"The domestic season is starting soon and I will be playing for my team and hopefully get back into match form, as I continue my training all the time. Whenever Pakistan requires my services I am always available for the team," he said optimistically.

However, Younus declined to comment on the reasons for the PCB refusing to consider him for selection.

Earlier this week, former Pakistan batsman Zaheer Abbas had urged the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reappoint Younus Khan as the Test team captain, calling him "the best choice to lead Pakistan" in absence of Salman Butt, who has been provisionally suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) under its anti-corruption code.

"The board should not waste any more time in appointing Younus as the Test team captain because he is the ideal man to lead the team after the controversial tour to England," Abbas added. (ANI)

Australians amazed by CWG security, sports facilities

Published>Sat, Oct 02 10 01:46 PM

New Delhi, oct.2 (ANI): On the eve of the Commonwealth Games praise for the security arrangments and sports facilties are coming from the most unexpected quarters.

Harelle Mcmohan, the flag bearer of the Australian contingent in the Commonwealth Games, was full of praise for the arrangements at the Games Village, where she has been staying for almost a week now.

Hareelle is Australia's netball captain and a dual Commonwealth Games gold medalist. She has been extra cautious about keeping mosquitoes away at the Games village.

However, the large presence of security forces is making the Aussie sports star nervous.

Talking to reporters at a Australian High Commission reception, she said: "It is obviously a bit different to what we are used to and disconcerting. I mean, on our bus, we have got armed guards, and in the front and in the back when we go anywhere. It is certainly different, but they have been great, they are great to talk to. I think it's a part of the Games here, and as an athlete going into training, I have had no problems and I feel very secure."

"It is certainly a different experience here. We could not remember seeing any machine gun in Melbourne. We are in Delhi for the second time. Earlier, it was a different, we were staying in a hotel and could walk around freely," McMahon said.

Many other players of the huge Australian contingent share the same sense of security in Delhi, but are miffed over restricted movement. Security measures are so stringent, that Australia's Sports Minister Mark Abib was also frisked at the Games Village.

It maybe recalled that Australia had expressed serious apprehensions about the security of the Commonwealth Games and Prime Minister Julia Gillard had even issued a strongly worded advisory that stated there is a high risk of terrorism in New Delhi and that since 2000, there have been at least 14 major terrorist attacks in New Delhi. She even said that attending the Commonwealth Games was a matter for individuals as they considered the government's travel advisory.

The Aussies have also given their thumbs up to the sports facilities.

"My experience is that these are outstanding facilities. I was here in March when I went to the National Stadium, where the World Cup (hockey) was held. Two of our major players said it was one of the best stadiums (stadia) for hockey. So far, I have been out to the Gymnastics arena, the wrestling and the cycling velodrome, and they are quite amazing, said." McMohan. By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)

'Delusional' husband accuses wife of having affair with Beckham

Published>Sat, Oct 02 10 12:36 PM

London, Oct 02 (ANI): Soccer ace David Beckham has been accused of having an affair with a Hollywood jeweler to the stars.

The 35-year-old footballer was forced to deny having an illicit fling with Shery Shabani, a married mother of two.

Shabani, 33, said she was accused by her 'jealous and 'delusional' husband Kambiz of having an affair with Beckham, whose three sons attend the same school as her own son and daughter.

She claimed Beckham had told her that her husband, a 42-year-old lawyer, had tried to run the star off the road in his car outside the school in May.

She also alleged that her husband told police officers that she had slept with the former England captain after she called them out to a domestic dispute.

A friend of the Beckhams said they were 'acquaintances' of Shabani as their children attend the same exclusive 14,000 pounds-a-year Hollywood school.

The seedy accusations surfaced as part of Shabani's application for a restraining order against her husband of 12 years. She is also seeking a divorce.

"As with another recent story, this is another tale full of fantasy," the Daily Mail quoted a spokesman for Beckham as saying.

And a friend insisted: "This is becoming a clear case of victimization", adding that Beckham was 'not aware' of Shery's claim that he told her of the incident on the road.

"It's a very odd situation. Obviously, David's not complicit in this at all - and he's only learned of it today. This is all false and there's absolutely no suggestion that there is any truth in the husband's claims of an affair between David and the woman. It's all a bit bizarre to be honest," said the pal.

Shabani denies any affair in the court documents. (ANI)
