'Love-rat' Peter Crouch's fiancee 'considering dumping him'

Published>Mon, Aug 09 10 12:07 PM

London, Aug 09 (ANI): English footballer Peter Crouch's model fiancee Abbey Clancy lashed out at him after learning that he paid 800 pounds to have sex with a teenage hooker.

Abbey called up Crouch after learning about his romps with the hooker.

"She screamed at him calling him every name under the sun. Crouchy's a big lad but she made him feel 2ft tall. He was pleading with her to forgive him, saying he still loved her like crazy," The Sun quoted a friend of the couple as saying.

"He tried to calm her with some tall story - but she was having none of it. She yelled 'You b******, how could you do this to me.

"Abbey was livid someone she was madly in love with treated her so badly. She found out the true extent of what he'd done while she was filming in Manchester and rang in a blind rage. She feels hurt, angry and humiliated and is considering whether they have a future," the friend added.

But the 24-year-old model was still wearing her engagement ring as she prepared to drive back home.

Friends said that 29-year-old crouch hopes Abbey would calm down and forgive for his wild night with Algerian hooker Monica Mint, 19.

The couple got engaged in June 2009. (ANI)

New Delhi, Aug 9 (ANI): Suspended Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) Joint Director General T S Darbari will appear before the Enforcement Directorate at 11.30 a.m. today and is expected to be quizzed over the financial irregularities case pertaining to the 2010 Games.

The Sports Ministry suspended Darbari, a close side of Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Chairman Suresh Kalmadi, after censure on Thursday.

The names of Darbari and CGOC Deputy Director General Sanjay Mohindroo figured in the investigations into alleged irregularites into services provided during the Queen's Baton Relay in London.

He was suspended along with Mohindroo after irregularities were revealed in payouts to a UK-based firm, which provided services such as car rentals during the Queen's Baton Relay launch in London. (ANI)

Awesome Aussies clinch 11th Champions Trophy

Published>Mon, Aug 09 10 11:17 AM

Australia won a third successive Champions Trophy, and 11th in all, with a comprehensive 4-0 mauling of England, shrugging off a 60-minute rain delay in the process.

England secured the consolation of runners-up yesterday having never previously done better than fifth place while the Netherlands took bronze with a 4-1 defeat of Germany.

Australia coach Ric Charlesworth was delighted with his team's perfect record of six wins in six matches.

"If you had told me before the tournament we would have these results I would have been very happy. You don't expect it will happen," Charlesworth said.

"We came here with the most inexperienced team in the tournament and this has deepened the belief of a number of players that they can play at this level."

England coach Jason Lee was disappointed with the quality of his team's performance.

"They did not show up to play today and I hope they are not satisfied that the silver medal is enough," Lee said.

Australia stamped their name on the trophy with three goals inside the first 15 minutes.

Luke Doerner converted his side's first penalty corner, Des Abbott knocked in a pass from Glenn Turner and Jason Wilson scorched a shot into the middle of the net.

England had three penalty corners at the end of the first half, but Ashley Jackson and Simon Mantell were off target.

A cloud burst flooded the pitch a minute into the half-time break, causing a 60-minute delay.

There were few quality performances in the second half due to the slow pitch although Jamie Dwyer managed to tee up a drive which rocked the goalposts for Australia's fourth goal.

The 4-0 scoreline equalled the highest score in a Champions Trophy final - a mark held by Germany and Australia.

Germany's long season created mental and physical stress as the hosts slumped 4-1 to the Dutch.

"We played a bad game. The players were not up to the task and it's a combination of mental and physical exhaustion," said Germany coach Markus Weise.

Dutch skipper Teun de Nooijer converted a penalty stroke and Rogier Hofman cracked in a field goal to give the Netherlands a 2-0 lead at the break.

De Nooijer struck again early in the second half, deflecting in a cross from Jeroen Hertzberger and Mink van der Weerden converted a sixth penalty corner chance, high into the right of goal.

Germany gained a consolation goal from Florian Woesch.

New Zealand finished last and were relegated after losing to Spain 3-2.

New Zealand took an early lead when Nicholas Wilson powered a backstick shot from the left inside the right post across Spain goalkeeper Francisco Cortes.

Spain earned a second penalty corner, converted by Roc Oliva who fired high inside the right post.

The Spanish took command early in the second half with skipper Santi Freixa driving in a loose ball and Oliva converting the team's third penalty corner chance.

Simon Child gave New Zealand hope of a comeback by cutting the deficit.

Wilson hit a penalty corner into the middle of the net

minutes after Child's goal only to have the goal disallowed following a video referral by Spain as the ball did not travel five metres outside the circle before the hit into goal.

Andrew Hayward had a chance to convert a sixth penalty corner which was deflected out by Spain.

New Zealand launched their own video referral, based on Spain's defenders being over the line at the start of the corner, but had the appeal denied.

"Once we get past this result and the results early in the tournament we can see we have made a lot of progress and we will continue to make progress when we get home," said New Zealand coach Shane McLeod.

New Zealand had defeated the Netherlands 3-1 earlier in the event, only their second win in Champions Trophy trophy history and first since 1978.

Force India''s Sutil confident of ending F1 season on a high

Mon, Aug 09 10 10:27 AM

Mumbai, Aug 9 (PTI) Force India driver Adrian Sutil is confident of picking up points in the remaining seven races of the Formula 1 season and finish 2010 on a high. "I feel very comfortable. They (remaining races) should suit our car (Mercedes). If you remember last year, there was a podium finish there (Italian GP at Monza) and a pole position," said the 27-year-old German here last evening before leaving for Switzerland after a short holiday in Goa. Last year at Monza, Sutil, who came to India last Wednesday, was second in the qualifying and finished fourth in the race. The regulations that caused changes in the tyres of F1 cars this season would be a disadvantage, felt Sutil, who is 10th overall with 35 points, but said he was confident of doing very well in four out of the last seven races this year. "Last year we had an incredible car there, it was a big advantage. This year, it''s a little bit more consistent tyres. We don''t have that advantage any more. Still we should be able to score a lot of points in the coming races. We have very a good chance in Spa (Belgium on August 29) and Monza (Italy on September 12)," he said. "Then we go to Singapore which is a bit more difficult course. Korea...nobody knows. Japan and Brazil should suit us well (before the season-ending race in Abu Dhabi). Four of seven...I''m absolutely confident," said Sutil. .

''Inzamam to blame for dearth of batting talent in Pak team''

Mon, Aug 09 10 10:21 AM

Karachi, Aug 9 (PTI) Pakistan''s former Test captain, Aamir Sohail feels the country''s most capped player Inzamam-ul Haq is responsible for the dearth of quality batsmen in the national team. Sohail said by the time Inzamam retired he had disturbed the national team and left it facing numerous problems. "When Imran Khan retired, he left behind a pack of quality bowlers, when Javed Miandad retired he left behind a legacy of good batsmen but when Inzamam retired he left behind nothing," Sohail told ''Geo super channel''. Sohail said during Inzamam''s tenure as captain, no batsman was allowed to settle down or groomed to take over when the big guns retired. "Good players like Yasir Hameed, Asim Kamal, Faisal Iqbal, Taufiq Umar or Hasan Reza who had done well in the chances given to them were never allowed to settle down in the team and establish themselves," he explained. "The result is that today we don''t have a ready line of batsmen to replace seniors. That is why I blame Inzamam for the current crisis in the team," Sohail said. Inzamam, who played 120 Tests and 398 one-day internationals, retired in 2007 after having remained captain since 2003. Sohail also lashed out at the national selectors and the management of the team for misleading the board into believing that there was enough back up talent to replace experienced players like Muhammad Yousuf, Younus Khan or Faisal Iqbal. "The truth is they misled the PCB Chairman into believing that he could manage the national team without Yousuf and Younus and that is why we are facing problems in England today," Sohail said.

Gatlin continues comeback with second win

U.S. sprinter Justin Gatlin greets spectators after finishing the 100 metres race at the ERGO...

Published>Mon, Aug 09 10 12:57 AM

U.S. sprinter Justin Gatlin clocked 10.17 seconds on Sunday to win his second consecutive 100 metres final since coming back from a four-year doping ban.

Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic 100 metres champion, was running at the Ergo World challenge meeting in Tallinn as he works towards the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Before Aug. 3, when he also ran in Estonia, he had not raced competitively since June 2006 after being banned because of a positive test for the male sex hormone testosterone and its precursors.

The 28-year-old regained his eligibility to compete in July but he was expected to have difficulty finding races even after the ban ended because of a Euro Meetings recommendation not to invite athletes who bring disrepute to the sport.

Gatlin bettered his final time from the Aug. 3 meeting where he ran 10.24 seconds. His personal best is 9.85. Fellow American Rubin Williams was second on Sunday in 10.25.

"My start is still a little off but obviously my finish is there," Gatlin told Reuters.

"I am able to surge and finish good, so once I get my start down better... I have some little muscle aches here and there and will go home and rehab a little, but obviously I can show everybody my times can come down by each race."

His coach agreed.

"He is pushing so hard now out of the blocks, that he is having difficulty controlling it. It is like a car that is starting very fast and fish tailing, but the middle part of the race was quite good and then started galloping at the end rather of sprinting smoothly," sprint coach Loren Seagrave told Reuters.

Seagrave added, "there is still room for improvement, the more he runs the more he gets a feel for things."

Seagrave said that Galtin planned to return the United States and will get five or six days of training in, then fly back for the Joensuu meeting in Finland on Aug. 21.

Gatlin remains optimistic that he can run a sub 10-second race before too long.

United too good for Chelsea in Shield

Manchester United players, including Wayne Rooney (C), lift the English Community Shield trophy after defeating...

Published>Mon, Aug 09 10 12:37 AM

Manchester United dominated a stuttering Chelsea to claim a deserved 3-1 victory over last season's Premier League and FA Cup Double winners in a lively Community Shield season curtain-raiser at Wembley on Sunday.

Goals from Antonio Valencia after 41 minutes and Javier Hernandez's first for his new club after 76 gave United control in the third Shield match between English football's current "big two" in the last four seasons.

Dimitar Berbatov, on as a late substitute, lobbed in United's third in stoppage time after a clever ball from Nani which summed up United's slicker passing and movement with the start of the new Premier League campaign six days away.

Salomon Kalou had pulled one back for Chelsea six minutes from time when Edwin van der Sar, outstanding after a shaky start, could only parry a shot from Daniel Sturridge during a late rally by the champions who have now lost five of their seven pre-season games.

The Community Shield is rarely a pointer to the battles to come over the next nine months but is always a game the competing managers want to win and Sunday's victory gave United manager Alex Ferguson the 45th trophy of his managerial career -- the 35th he has brought to United at the start of his 25th season as their manager.

The other winners on the day were the Wembley groundstaff who appear to have solved the pitch problems that have dogged the stadium since it re-opened in 2007.

FAMILIAR FACES

Unusually neither team fielded any new signings at kickoff, with Chelsea's main summer import Yossi Benayoun and United's Mexican striker Hernandez both on the bench.

While the players were all totally familiar to the fans, some were less popular than others and four of the England squad who flopped at the World Cup - Chelsea's John Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard and United's Wayne Rooney -- were jeered and booed by opposing fans in the early stages.

The booing subsided after a while -- apart from those directed at the always unpopular Cole -- because United's fans began to have something to cheer about as Paul Scholes dominated in midfield and, along with Ji-Sung Park, helped United take control.

Scholes should have done better with a skied shot after nine minutes and Rooney went close before setting up their opener after a superb pass from Scholes four minutes before the break.

Valencia took the chance excellently but there was little joy for Michael Owen, back at Wembley for the first time since he seriously injured his hamstring there in the League Cup final in February.

Ferguson replaced Owen and Rooney at halftime as promised, with United fans getting their first glimpse of Hernandez, the 22-year-old Mexican striker tipped as a United star of the future.

He did not disappoint either, doubling the score with a bizarre finish as he met a low cross and sent it into the net via his foot and face.

Chelsea rallied in the closing stages after Sturridge and Didier Drogba came on but the champions, who beat United on penalties to lift the Community Shield last season, failed to impress.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti will want to see them sharpen up next week before they began the defence of their title against West Bromwich Albion.

Fighting Pakistan hold up dominant England

Pakistan's Zulqarnain Haider avoids a bouncer watched England's Graeme Swann (L) and Andrew Strauss (R)...

Published>Mon, Aug 09 10 12:23 AM

Debutant Zulqarnain Haider scored a courageous 88 to frustrate England's bid to win inside three days against Pakistan in the second test at Edgbaston on Sunday.

Pakistan, bowled out for just 72 on Friday before England replied with 251, reached 291 for nine at stumps to lead by 112 with two days remaining. Umar Gul, batting with a runner, was on nine and Mohammad Asif had 13.

Haider came in at 82 for five with his team still 97 runs from avoiding an innings loss. Partnerships of 52 with Mohammad Amir and 115 with Saeed Ajmal, who hit a career best 50, ensured England were at least given a fight.

Pakistan, 1-0 down in the four-match series, were jolted by an inspired spell either side of lunch by off-spinner Swann, who took a test-best six for 60. Haider dug in, though, before he was the ninth victim when he drove Swann to mid-off.

Wicketkeeper Haider, picked for the omitted Kamran Akmal, looked to have bagged the unwanted tag of a 'king pair' when given out lbw to Swann first ball. But a referral showed the ball had turned too much.

Haider's finest stroke was perhaps a thumping straight drive for four off pace bowler James Anderson that took him to 77. Another boundary driven through mid-on off Steven Finn raised his 50, when he knelt and kissed the turf.

Pakistan, 19 for one overnight, almost survived the first hour of the morning until Swann dramatically made his entrance by taking a wicket with his third ball of the match. He had bowled just two overs in the series before the day began.

Left-hander Imran Farhat (29), struck above his right eye when on 27 by a Stuart Broad bouncer, was bowled when Swann came around the wicket, pitched the ball outside his leg stump only for it to spin sharply enough to take off stump.

Right-hander Azhar Ali, after battling hard for 82 deliveries, perished to another spitting off-break from Swann for 19. This time Swann came over the wicket and landed the ball outside Ali's off stump and managed to get it to clip leg stump.

PRODIGIOUS TURN

Swann's prodigious turn created panic. Umar Akmal advanced down the pitch and tried to hit Swann over long-on first ball but missed it and escaped a tough stumping chance for Matt Prior. Finn added the wicket of Shoaib Malik (3).

Akmal (20), usually an aggressive player, looked uncomfortable defending against the turning ball and made a peculiar decision to leave a Swann delivery that spun into him and struck him on the pads for lbw. Akmal lost his appeal to the third umpire. Swann added Umar Amin (14) after lunch, stumped by Prior.

For the remainder of the afternoon session, Swann was denied by Haider and the 18-year-old Amir, whose maturity belied his years.

While Haider was a solid presence, Amir escaped a run out chance on one and a dropped catch by short leg fielder Alastair Cook on nine off Paul Collingwood. Amir eventually edged Broad to Andrew Strauss at first slip shortly after tea.

As England sniffed another chance to claim the win, Ajmal hung around to make a 50 off 77 balls, before edging Swann to Strauss at slip two balls after his milestone.

Earlier, Broad was spoken to by the umpires after needlessly throwing the ball at Haider (when on 22) - striking him on the shoulder.

Broad, known for occasional bouts of temper, apologised to the injured batsman but match referee Ranjan Madugalle may yet be called to take action.

Real Madrid overturned a two-goal deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-2 in a pre-season friendly at the Pasadena Rose Bowl on Saturday.

The Galaxy went ahead five minutes before halftime when defender Todd Dunivant scored and doubled the advantage a minute into the second period after U.S. international Landon Donovan slotted home a penalty kick.

The visitors had made eight substitutions at the break, introducing several of the squad's big names, and once they had settled after conceding the second, Jose Mourinho's men set about avoiding an embarrassing result in front of 89,134 spectators.

Argentine international striker Gonzalo Higuain pulled one back for Real in the 51st minute, latching on to a pass from Cristiano Ronaldo, and the same player equalised ten minutes later with a deft chip.

Real scored the winning goal in the 71st minute when Galaxy substitute goalkeeper Brian Perk could only parry a shot into the path of midfielder Pedro Leon, whose looping shot from the edge of the area took a deflection before finding the net.

Madrid rallied to beat Mexico's Club America by the same score in the opener of their two-match U.S. tour in San Francisco on Wednesday and the team's resilience was something that impressed coach Mourinho.

"For this trip, everything was perfect," Mourinho told reporters. "We trained well. We trained hard. The players were together for 24 hours in a perfect environment for them to grow up as a group."

That bonding appeared to have a positive effect on the side's ability to remain competitive, even in friendlies.

"Obviously, I like this mentality of not wanting to lose, of wanting to overcome, a lot," Mourinho added. "For me the second half was fantastic in every aspect."

Bengal beat Punjab to win Santosh Trophy for record 30th time

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 11:07 PM

Kolkata, Aug 8 (IANS) Bengal defeated Punjab 2-1 to win the 64th Santosh Trophy national football championship after 11 years here Sunday. It was a record 30th win for Bengal.

Denson Devadas scored two goals for Bengal after Balwant Singh had given the lead to Punjab in the 30th minute.

The hosts came back, cheered by 15,000 fans at the Salt Lake Stadium, as Devadas struck twice (45+2nd, 78th minute) to romp home.

Bengal has never lost a Santosh Trophy at home.

Eight-time winners Punjab fell short of winning their third title in four years.

Bengal dominated from the start, but it was Punjab who took the lead against the run of play as Balwant headed home a Rahul Kumar cross from the right.

Devadas then levelled, scoring in the second minute of the added time with a sharp header off a Snehashis Chakraborty corner.

Bengal dictated the course of play in the second half as Snehashis made incisive moves and Devadas, Jayanta Sen and Dhanarajan manned the midfield. They combined well and came close to scoring, before Devadas struck a scorching left-footer from 25 yards to seal the issue.

'This is a memorable day in my career. I want to savour the moment,' said Devadas, who was adjudged the Man of the Match.

'The players and coach Sabbir Ali deserve all the credit the way the team played in the tournament. It was not easy to play five matches in eight days,' the Keralite added.

Ali praised the players for the fine victory.

'Bengal players were left out from the national team probables list despite some of them like Snehashis and Arnab Mondal doing consistently well in the I-League. Hopefully, their performance will not go unnoticed after this victory,' he said.

Winning Santosh trophy most memorable moment of life: Devadas

Sun, Aug 08 10 10:27 PM

Kolkata, Aug 8 (PTI) Bengal''s star performer Denson Devadas might be a Keralite but the regional factor does not matter for the diminutive midfielder. Devadas, who struck twice in his side''s entertaining 2-1 victory over Punjab in the Santosh Trophy final today, termed the title triumph as the most memorable moment of his life. "I am really proud after this. This moment will remain etched forever as I look back to my career," said Devadas, who plays for Chirag United in the I-League. Asked why he preferred playing for Bengal, he said: "The regionalism factor does not play a role when he is playing on the field. My aim is to score goals and I give my best always." Devadas hails from a place called Bernassery in Kannur district in Kerala. Devadas scored in the 45+3rd and 78th minutes to help Bengal rally past Punjab in the summit clash, a triumph that ended their 11 years wait. The 29 times champions had last won the title in Chennai in April 1999. In jubilation moments, Bengal coach Shabbir Ali was lifted by the teammates as they sang ''three cheers for Bengal''. Ali also termed it the most memorable moment of his life and gave full credit to the teammates. "The win is for them. It''s the boys who have made it... I have a small role to play," he said. Lauding Devadas for his twin goal effort, Ali said, "He is a spectacular player and his goals today were class apart." With Bengal suffering from injury woes to their star forwards Shankar Oraon and Nilendra Dewan, TFA graduate Robin Singh, a six feet tall robust striker, had to play the makeshift role. Robin grabbed the opportunity with both hands playing a stellar role in Bengal''s campaign as he had scored an 84th minute equaliser against Goa to script Bengal''s turnaround. The Noida lad dedicated this success to his mother who incidentally is a Bengali. "This moment is for my mother. She is very proud of me. Both my parents were here. I will really relish this moment. I will stay in Bengal for at least two more years and make my career," Robin, who is contracted with East Bengal, said. PTI TAP RG SHN

Gul out of England Test series owing to thigh injury

Sun, Aug 08 10 09:37 PM

Karachi, Aug 8 (PTI) The down and out Pakistan side received a huge blow today when their star-performer pacer Umar Gul was ruled out for the remainder of the series against England. Pakistan manager Yawar Saeed confirmed from Birmingham that MRI scans and ultra sound tests have shown that Gul has a muscle rapture in his thigh which would take three to four weeks to heal, leaving him out of the remaining two Test matches. "He is out of the Test series. We will have another check up in 10 days time to know exactly how soon he can return to international cricket," Yawar said. Gul tore his thigh muscle during the second day of the second Test against England at Edgbaston leaving the already struggling Pakistan team in dire straits. "It is a big blow to the team because Gul has been in good form in this series and was also batting well," Yawar said. He said any decision on seeking a replacement for Gul would be taken later by the tour selection committee as at the moment, the focus was on the under-progress Test match. "But we have two back-up pace bowlers, Tanvir Ahmed and Wahab Riaz in the touring squad so we are not short in the pace bowling department," Yawar said. The tall and lanky bowler has a history of fitness issues and in 2004 and 2005 remained out of the action for some 16 months due to a back stress fracture. He also had an elbow problem that kept him out of the Twenty20 World Cup and the Asia Cup before the England tour. Pakistan''s chief selector, Mohsin Khan said the selectors were keeping a tab on things in England and Gul''s injury had come as a big disappointment. "So far the tour selectors have not called for any replacement and since the third Test begins from August 18 there is time for them to take a decision," he said. Yawar said that if need arose, Pakistan also have the option of calling leg-spinner, Danish Kaneria who had been released after the first Test to play for his county, Essex. "It is not a correct assumption that Danish is out of the series. We want him to keep himself fit by playing in county cricket and we can call him whenever we need him in the series," the Pakistan manager said.

Bree Lee to perform in India

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 09:17 PM

Sydney, Aug 8 (IANS) Injury plagued Australian fast bowler Brett Lee will be coming to India in the coming weeks - though not for cricketing reasons.

The 32-year-old is scheduled to perform eight shows in India with his musical band called 'White Shoe Theory. His good friend Mick Vawdon is also part of the band as a vocalist.

'Our musical influence would be Crowded House and bands similar to that. Mick is the lead singer and he has a great voice. We've known each other for years and he's been singing for a long time. I do the back-up vocals and play the bass,' Lee was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.

The duo of Lee and Mick is also likely to release their music album after the India tour.

'Jimmy Barnes is a friend and we told him about what we were doing and he said straight away that we could use his recording studio, that in itself was a thrill and we are happy with the way the tracks are sounding,' said Lee.

'Music is my passion, no doubt about that. I would want music to be my future - who doesn't want to be a rock star. I've always joked that I was a musician who used his sport to prop himself up but the India tour could be a real chance to make a go of things.'

The cricketer is also no stranger to the musical scene in India. He is famously remembered for his duet with Indian musical legend Asha Bhonsle four years ago.

The tall fast bowler has also featured in a Bollywood movie called 'Victory' in which Harman Baweja was the leading actor.

Padmini in joint lead in World Junior Chess C''ship

Sun, Aug 08 10 08:51 PM

Chotowa Czarna (Poland) Aug 8 (PTI) Woman Grandmaster Padmini Rout continued with her winning ways and downed Khayala Mardan Abdulla of Azerbaijan to jump in joint lead with 4.5 points after the conclusion of the fifth round of the World Junior Chess Championship here. Overnight sole leader Olga Girya of Russia was held to a draw by Nafisa Muminova of Uzbekistan and this paved the way for Padmini to join the leading group. The Orissa-based girl shares the lead with top seed and hot favourite Anna Muzychuk of Slovenia, Nastassia Ziaziulkina of Belarus and Girya who all have won four and drawn one game thus far in this 80-players championship. Bhakti Kulkarni inched herself to 4 points after another creditable show. Bhakti held Melanie Ohme of Germany to a draw and is currently joint fifth with eight rounds still to come. The other Indian in the fray - B Pratyusha played out a draw with Kubra Ozturk of Turkey. Playing the black side of a Sicilian Najdorf, Padmini faced the Velimirovic attack and was never in any troubles. A middle game error by Khayala proved costly as Padmini was able the seize the initiative with timely pawn advances in the center. The Azerbaijani was pushed to the wall soon after and a temporary piece sacrifice sealed the issue in Padmini''s favour. The game lasted 49 moves. In the open championship being organised simultaneously, Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi uncorked another fine attacking idea to outwit Niclas Huschenbeth of Germany in the fifth round game. Playing white, Negi was up against a Sicilian Najdorf and it was sheer preparation and skill at work that saw him gain the upper hand out of the opening. As a matter of fact, many chess analytical engines showed black to be better but Negi was relentless in carrying out his plan to perfection. Huschenbeth resigned on his 40th turn when his position was beyond repairs. Dariusz Swiercz of Poland emerged as the sole leader in this section with a clinical victory over Tamir Nabaty of Israel. It was a Queen''s gambit accepted by Nabaty that ran in to troubles in the opposite coloured Bishops middle game as Swiercz gained the upper hand by going for a thematic king side attack. It took just 38 moves for Swiercz to get another full point. Swiercz was the sole winner amongst the overnight leaders and Negi is now joint second in the standing list with 4 points in his kitty. The battle is only likely to heat up as the event progresses further. (More) PTI Corr SHN

Buchanan to assist England for Ashes

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 08:47 PM

London, Aug 8 (IANS) Former Australia coach John Buchanan will be assisting England in their preparations for the Ashes and is expected to join the squad next week.

With David Saker joining England as the new bowling coach early this year, Buchanan's appointment is only likely to add to the fears of the Australians. The 57-year-old helped England in a consultancy capacity last summer.

'I can confirm that he (Buchanan) is coming here this week,' an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) spokesman was quoted as saying the Guardian.

Buchanan helped Australia win three out of four Ashes series, including the 5-0 whitewash of England in 2006-07, and also coached his country during two successful World Cup campaigns.

Indian football need vast improvement: Gill

Sun, Aug 08 10 08:37 PM

New Delhi, Aug 8 (PTI) Sports Minister M S Gill today praised Bengal football team for their stupendous win against Punjab in the Santosh Trophy final but feels standard of the game in the country needs a lot of improvement. Bengal beat Punjab 2-1 in final in Kolkata to claim the title after 11 years. "I saw Santosh Trophy final with great interest. I wanted to be present but could not due to the Parliament duties. Bengal was the better team. They dominated the second half totally. They are deserved winners," Gill said after watching the match on TV. "But I have to say as a footballer, we were the best Indian state. The standard of football control, stamina, short passes, and many other things have to vastly improve, if we want to go back again to Olympic semifinals as in Melbourne 1956," Gill said. The Minister was unhappy that the football lovers in the rural areas could not watch the match due to its limited broadcast. "This should have been shown free on Doordarshan for all Indians to see. Business earning of the football federation naturally prevented this. How can I be happy if villagers in Bengal and Punjab all of whom do not have cable could not see the match. How can interest in football grow?," he said. PTI AT

FICA chief calls ICC a 'relic'

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 08:07 PM

Melbourne, Aug 8 (IANS) Tim May of the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA) Sunday described the International Cricket Council (ICC) as a 'relic' which makes decisions benifiting the 'powerful' at the expense of the game.

May was critical of rejection of John Howard's nomination as president-elect and questioned how much Alan Isaac, who replaced the former Australian prime minister, could do and suggested nothing may change until the ICC functions independently.

Only three countries -- England, Australia and New Zealand - supported Howard's nomination while the strong African and Asian block, including the Indian cricket board, opposed Howard's candidature.

The rejection of Howard was believed to stem from his strong opposition to Robert Mugabe's government in Zimbabwe.

'The governance structure of the board is a relic of the past,' May was quoted as saying in the Age. 'Board composition in the professional sporting world has moved beyond structures where members comprise the board. Such structures are fraught with conflicts of interests, cronyism and lack of specific expertise and independence. Whilst the ICC maintains its present board structure, it's most likely the ICC will continue to be held by the public as an underachiever.

'It (ICC) will continue to make decisions that benefit the powerful at the expense of the greater good of the game. It's the No. 1 issue in the game today - its solution provides the pathway for better and more equitable decisions surrounding future playing schedules, ICC events, managing the Twenty20 format, investment in the game, allocation of resources.'

'Alan has a sound reputation as being a fair and astute leader - he will have an opportunity to lead a period of change within the ICC - but the challenge lies in convincing the very board that he wants to change that it needs to change,' May said. 'No one likes relinquishing power.

May said ICC was not transparent when it came to disclosing why Howard's nominations was rejected.

'John Howard would have been an outstanding president. The line which some boards have hidden behind, his lack of cricket administration capabilities, is an insult to the stakeholders who follow the game. We deserve better. The ICC is supposed to be a transparent body but for some reason they won't disclose why Mr. Howard's nomination was rejected.

'Players are continually told and governed by a notion of the 'spirit of the game'. It's time our administrators led by example.'

Paul Robinson retires from international football

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 06:57 PM

London, Aug 8 (IANS) England and Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson has decided to retire from international football ahead of England's friendly against Hungary Wednesday.

Robinson was picked in the final squad for the friendly at Wembley by coach Fabio Capello but the former Tottenham keeper withdrew his name at the final moment.

He was earlier dropped from the England squad for the World Cup in South Africa.

'Only now have I been able to make this decision as previously I haven't been in contention for selection. I don't see myself as a number three or four keeper and find that role very frustrating,' Robinson was Sunday quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

The goalkeeper played in 41 internationals before calling it a day. He made his debut against Australia and was a first choice keeper during the 2006 World Cup qualifiers and then for the finals in Germany. He lost his place in the team after he made some errors during the Euro 2008 qualifiers.

England bring in Australia's Buchanan to plot Ashes win

Australia's coach John Buchanan talks with his team players as a wet outfield delays the...

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 06:37 PM

Former Australia coach John Buchanan has been appointed as a consultant by England to help Andrew Strauss's team win the Ashes in Australia for the first time in 24 years.

Buchanan, 57, coached his country to three successful Ashes campaigns from 2001 to 2006-07 (when Australia won 5-0), losing just once in 2005. He also aided the Australians in two triumphant World Cups in 2003 and 2007.

England regained the Ashes in 2009 but have not won a test series in Australia since Mike Gatting led them to that honour in 1986-87. The first test starts in Brisbane on November 25.

"I can confirm John Buchanan will be arriving in the next 48 hours," an England spokesman told Reuters on Sunday.

Buchanan, who also coached Middlesex in English county cricket, will assist England Team Director Andy Flower in his plans.

Buchanan is renowned for his technical theories and use of psychology, but has divided opinion. Former Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne remains an outspoken critic of Buchanan's coaching approach.

England are currently playing the second in a four-test series against Pakistan, and well placed to take a 2-0 lead.

David Hussey, willing to travel and bat till he gets Test call-up

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 06:07 PM

London, Aug.8 (ANI): David Hussey, as with his older brother Mike, is a perennially enthusiastic cricketer.

Yet, in England, he admits that attitude can be tested, particularly by the constant travel.

"It's never home here because you're always uprooting yourself, packing your bag and going to a different hotel. It's just never the same place you come home to," he told The Sunday Age immediately after a lost match.

"It is hard to keep yourself up all the time, but it's about pride of performance, and that every game I play, I have to win, irrespective of who's playing. If I'm playing with Kristy (his wife), if I'm playing with you, I'm going to have to win the game. You might be a gun squash player - well, I'm happy to take you down," he added.

Having lofty performance ambitions is a necessity for Australians playing in England, with the counties and their supporters expecting the best from their usually well-remunerated imports.

While playing in England has partly offset the financial impact of losing his national team contract earlier this year, Hussey said it comes with the expectation to "score all the runs and take all the wickets".

"[Supporters are] very demanding. They expect the best. If you don't score the runs, they let you know. There was one game I played about three years ago after I'd made about 20 runs in my past four innings. This bloke chipped me up as I walked off [cheaply] for the fourth time, so I walked back out and had a quiet chat to him," he said.

"He basically outlined, 'If you don't get the runs no one else is going to do it, so hurry up and do it'."

Despite the financial rewards, Hussey was adamant his motivation for playing in England during the Australian winter, which he has done since 2004, was to prepare himself for a Test call-up. Judging on selection trends.

However, it may be time for him to find a new motivation. He topped the shield run-scoring tally last season - 970 runs at 57.06 - but for last month's Tests against Pakistan the reserve batting slot in the Australian team was given to New South Wale's Usman Khawaja, a player almost a decade his junior.

"To play over here in an Ashes series would be the ultimate goal, and I thought playing county cricket would prepare me for that. I've done reasonably well in county cricket, but it's just not really recognised in Australian circles or with the selectors," Hussey said.

"Some people say it's a bit of a waste, but I go the other way," Hussey said.

"I still hang by the phone for [chairman of selectors] Andrew Hilditch's call to play Test cricket. One of these days, I hope it happens - and hopefully sooner rather than later because I'm not getting any younger. At 33, I've still got a few good years left and I still think I'm one of the best batsmen going around in Australia," Hussey said.

The irony surrounding Hussey's responsibilities in England is that it allows him to spend more time with Kristy than during the Australian summer, primarily because of Notts' custom to allow the players' wives and girlfriends to travel with the team (unlike Victoria), but also because of the wage Hussey receives from the Notts.

Kristy, a qualified marine biologist, focuses on six-month work contracts during the Australian summer.

"I certainly find that we spend more time together here in England during the county season," Kristy said.

For Darren Pattinson, Hussey's teammate at both Notts and Victoria, family complicates the situation.

His decision in 2008 to uproot wife Elissa and infant daughters Olivia and Steph from Melbourne's south-east was spectacularly rewarded within months when, a fortnight shy of his 29th birthday, he was chosen to play a Test for England, his country of birth.

"We never thought it would be a burden or anything, we just got up and did it," said Pattinson, who took a wicket with the first ball of the match against Somerset.

While the interest from English selectors was fleeting, Notts rewarded him with a three-year contract extension. That Pattinson will be 32 when his contract ends next season should not preclude him from a further deal.

What might, however, is the social impact on his young family and daughter in school. "I know it would be a lot easier if I didn't have a family," he said. "I'm going to have to make a decision pretty soon on how long I go for."

Playing in England enables Pattinson and his family to enjoy warm weather year-round, but he said he was looking forward to a winter back in Melbourne.

Hussey is similarly keen - partly for the AFL, which he attempts to keep up with via various pay-TV subscriptions in England.

"I do catch up a lot with mates via text messages. The only things I really miss a lot are the football - obviously St Kilda - and walking down to the coffee shop with my wife. And the beach, down Sorrento way," Hussey said.

"It's a bit difficult [returning later]. You go to a season launch and you've just finished a season in England and you think, 'God, another season to come', but the advantage of playing over here is you hit the ground running, having had match practice out in the middle.

"The key is to have as much rest as possible so when you're not playing just switch off from cricket - go on holidays, go down the beach, do whatever." (ANI)

Former Olympian Akotkar backs Kalmadi

Sun, Aug 08 10 05:51 PM

Pune, Aug 8 (PTI) Former Olympian Balkrishna Akotkar today came out strongly in support of underfire Suresh Kalmadi and lashed out at his Tokyo Olympics fellowman Milkha Singh for his recent remarks that Army should have handled the Commonwealth Games preparation. The national marathon record holder, Akotkar, said Singh had himself been "unsuccessful" despite being in the helm of affairs of Chandigarh Amateur Athletic Association (CAAA) and it was irrational for him to criticise with less than two months to go for the October 3-14 Delhi Games. "It''s shocking to note the irrational comments by one of the great athletes of the country. His remarks were baseless and unwarranted in the interest of the country. It''s easy to point fingers at each other. He is an iconic figure and what has been his contribution," the 1964 Tokyo Olympian told PTI. Miffed with Singh''s recent remarks where he criticised Kalmadi with scams marring the build up to the CWG, the 75-year-old claimed, "I would honour and felicitate you with a purse of Rs 1 lakh if you could produce an Olympic medal winner. He should have weighed the pros and cons before making such comments." In strong support of Kalmadi who hails from Pune, Akotkar said "The Athletic Federation of India (AFI) has gone on record for the outstanding contribution of IOA president Kalmadi. It''s through his efforts the cash award scheme was launched and many top-ranked athletes were benefited. "Even the country has hailed the phenomenal organising capacity of Kalmadi in getting not only Commonwealth Youth Games (in Pune) but also successfully bidding for the CWG which has come to the country after the 1982 Asiad." Akotkar had represented in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics alongside Singh. Singh had earlier trained guns at Kalmadi and held the OC chairman responsible for all the mess in the build up to the CWG and said that Army should have handled the operations. PTI TAP ATK

'Murray can win Grand Slam title if he finds his self-belief', says Newcombe

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 05:21 PM

London, Aug 8(ANI): Australian tennis legend John Newcombe reckons that British star Andy Murray will only win a Grand Slam title if he beats the demons of self-doubt.

Newcombe, who has won seven Grand Slam titles, believes that Murray has the game to trouble the best, but is being held back by a lack of self-belief.

"Murray has got to get his game to another level if he's going to win Grand Slam tournaments," The Daily Express quoted Newcombe, as saying.

"His biggest problem is that he withdraws instead of attacking when the pressure is on during big points in big matches. We saw that in the Wimbledon semi-final when he lost in straight sets to Rafael Nadal because he was too quick to go on the defensive."

"The other issue for Andy is that his first serve percentage is not high enough. He's got to reduce his body movement and his swing in the manner of the world's best golfers," he added.he 66-year-old further feels that Murray had made a wrong decision to appoint Miles Maclagan as his coach for the past three years.

"He needs a coach to fine-tune his serve and his mental approach because there isn't anything hugely wrong with other aspects of his game," he added. (ANI)

ICC structure fraught with cronyism: May

Sun, Aug 08 10 04:51 PM

Melbourne, Aug 8 (PTI) Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) chief Tim May today launched a scathing attack on the ICC, saying its governance structure is fraught with "conflicts of interests, cronyism and lack of specific expertise and independence". "The governance structure of the board is a relic of the past," May told ''The Sun-Herald''. "Board composition in the professional sporting world has moved beyond structures where members comprise the board. "Such structures are fraught with conflicts of interests, cronyism and lack of specific expertise and independence. Whilst the ICC maintains its present board structure, it is most likely the ICC will continue to be held by the public as an underachiever," he added. May said given the state of affairs in ICC, the powerful boards would continue to have their way. "It will continue to make decisions that benefit the powerful at the expense of the greater good of the game. "It''s the No.1 issue in the game today - its solution provides the pathway for better decisions surrounding future playing schedules, ICC events, managing the Twenty20 format, investment in the game, allocation of resources," he said. May said all these ills were highlighted when former Australian Prime Minister John Howard''s nomination as ICC''s president-elect was rejected. New Zealand Cricket chairman Alan Isaac has replaced Howard as Australasia''s nomination. "The decision by a number of member boards to band together in rejecting the John Howard nomination is just a trademark decision by the ICC. It''s made on the basis of what is good for the influential members, not what is good for the greater good of the game," he said "John Howard would have been an outstanding president. The line which some boards have hidden behind - his lack of cricket administration capabilities - is an insult to the stakeholders who follow the game," he added. May hoped that Isaac would bring about the much-needed change in the ICC''s functioning. "Alan has a sound reputation as being a fair and astute leader. He will have an opportunity to lead a period of change within the ICC, but the challenge lies in convincing the very board that he wants to change that it needs to change," May said. "The ICC is supposed to be a transparent body but ... they won''t disclose why Mr Howard''s nomination was rejected. Players are continually told and governed by a notion of the ''spirit of the game''. It''s time our administrators led by example," he added.

Ronaldo's 'weird world of sex, glamour and insecurity' revealed

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 04:37 PM

London, Aug 08 (ANI): English model Jasmine Lennard has opened up about Portugal footballer Cristiano Ronaldo's 'weird world of sex, glamour and insecurity'.

Lennard said that she first met Ronaldo in the small and exclusive Los Angeles nightclub Villa in July 2008. Being 22 that time, his usual entourage of five surrounded him or six most trusted men.

She said that Ronaldo once spent 30,000 pounds on one weekend in Vegas where he flew himself and five of the crew to meet a gang of Portuguese girls for fun and games.

Ronaldo gives the impression to the majority of women he dates that his ability to speak English is limited but actually, it's not, it is simply selective.

She also said that he is entirely able to hold intelligent conversation, but becomes conveniently verbally disabled when being confronted by a scorned woman at which point everything becomes "que que que" and "I don't understand".

The 25-year-old model said that Ronaldo sent his main man Rogerio to ask her where she was going after the club and if they could all come and have a 'sexy time', reports The Mirror.

Ronaldo had just broken up with Spanish model Nereida Gallardo after a six-month relationship but he still wanted to meet her.

Lennard said that she preferred men that are a little rougher round the edges, which Ronaldo wasn't. (ANI)

Beckham will play on until he is 45, says LA Galaxy coach

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 03:37 PM

Los Angeles, Aug 8(ANI): Los Angeles Galaxy coach Bruce Arena reckons that midfielder David Beckham has another ten years left on the pitch.

Beckham is currently recovering from a ruptured achilles tendon suffered while on loan to AC Milan in a Serie A match against Chievo in March.

"Knowing him he might play until he's 45. He's got steam left in him for sure," News of The World quoted Arena, as saying.

Arena insists that the 35-year-old has the stamina to stay at the top despite his horror Achilles injury, which saw him miss the World Cup in South Africa.

"We've always said that Beckham is gonna be playing here in LA and finish his career here and he will," he added.

LA Galaxy will play host to the New York Red Bulls, whose lineup now includes French star Thierry Henry, on September 24, and a Beckham return for that match would be a showcase event for the Major League Soccer. (ANI)

Angry Butt storms out of media interaction

Sun, Aug 08 10 02:37 PM

Lahore, Aug 8 (PTI) Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ijaz Butt returned home today from England amid speculation of his sacking and cut short a media interaction at the airport after being asked some tough questions. A tired and angry-looking Butt came out of the airport terminal building to be greeted by a group of journalists and the interaction was not very cordial. "You people think you know everything about cricket and selection, why do you keep on asking me these stupid questions?" said Butt and then walked off towards the parking lot. The PCB Chairman reached home amid growing rumors that he has been told to step down from his position by next month by the chief patron of the board President Asif Zardari to pave the way for the government to appoint an ad-hoc committee for running cricket in the country. According to reports, a senior bureaucrat and former Chairman of the board Dr Zafar Altaf is in line to head the ad-hoc body which is expected to take over in mid-September as some cricket related personalities and influential politicians have urged Zardari to sack Butt. Butt''s controversy-ridden two-year tenure as PCB Chairman ends in October, leaving Pakistan cricket in disarray particularly after the national team''s poor performances in England. In his brief interaction with the media, Butt did say that Muhammad Yousuf had refused to play the second Test against England after joining the team one day before the match began at Edgbaston. "Yousuf refused to play the second Test immediately," Butt told reporters when asked why the former captain was not played despite being rushed to England. The PCB Chairman also felt that the fielding had let the team down in the ongoing Test series and said some important decisions concerning the national team would be taken soon. "We will take some important decisions after a meeting of the governing council. The players disappointed with their performances in the Test series," Butt said. He defended the selection of the team and counter-questioned the reporters about which deserving player had been left out of the England Tour. "Those who were selected look at their domestic records, tell me which player are you talking about? don''t just ask silly questions do your homework," Butt said when a reporter said that deserving players had been ignored for the tour. Former stars criticise Pak team for not playing Yousuf

Sun, Aug 08 10 02:21 PM

Karachi, Aug 8 (PTI) Pakistan''s former stars have blasted the team management in England for not playing senior batsman Muhammad Yousuf in the second Test against England despite calling him urgently into the side. "In the first place, I don''t understand what Yousuf is doing in England. If the need was so urgent that they rushed him to England at a short notice then he should have played in whatever condition he was in," former Test captain Zaheer Abbas told PTI. Zaheer, a top batsman himself, said he was surprised when he learnt that the cricket board had called up Yousuf who had announced his retirement in March. "It is a laughable situation calling a batsman out of retirement and who technically is still banned. What message did it convey to the young players in the touring squad that the board and management does not have confidence in them?" he asked. "To make matters worse after calling him up urgently they don''t even play him in the team saying he is not ready for international cricket. This is adding more pressure on the younger players, how do you expect them to perform?" the former captain fumed. He said the way the Pakistan Cricket Board and the team management in England have handled things could only be described as comical. "I don''t know what Yousuf is now doing in England. When he and Younus Khan were available why they were not selected in the team in the first place," he said. He said the decision to bat first after winning the toss in the second Test when the batsmen were struggling was also debatable. "I don''t know who is advising Salman Butt but he needs guidance right now." PTI COR PM

Peter Crouch 'cheats on fiancee by romping with 800 pounds teen hooker'

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 02:07 PM

London, Aug 08 (ANI): England footballer Peter Crouch slept with a 19-year-old hooker in a hotel room in Madrid, it has emerged.

The 29-year-old apparently cheated on her model fiancee Abbey Clancy by paying more than 800 pounds for two sordid romps with hooker Monica Mint on a stag weekend in Madrid.

Crouch's alleged infidelity came just days after he returned from a romantic trip with Clancy.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker gave the cash to Monica in the back of a taxi and then slept with her at a downmarket hotel in Madrid.

"Peter had no hesitation in paying to have sex with me. He wasn't nervous. I didn't know he was engaged to Abbey until afterwards. I can't believe he paid for sex with someone like me when he has a gorgeous woman like her at home," News of the World quoted Monica as saying.

"He seemed a nice person, not arrogant, so I let him take control. When he looked at my body he couldn't help but be impressed. He said, 'Oh my God! It's beautiful'. We then had intercourse," she added. (ANI)

'Tired' England stars were 'doomed to fail' even before World Cup: Capello

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 01:47 PM

London, Aug 8(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has admitted that he feared the Three Lions' World Cup campaign was doomed to fail even before it began as his players were not fit.

Capello insists that his players were physically tired in their three warm-up games and did not recover in time for the tournament.

"We played Egypt in March and the players were in a good situation, but that changed when we played the friendlies before the World Cup. They were not the same physically," News of The World quoted Capello, as saying.

"We knew it before the World Cup. I spoke with my staff, but I could not say it publicly because psychologically it is not good for the players."

"When we started to play I could understand that we were tired in games against Mexico, Japan and even the Platinum Stars game in South Africa. We tried to do everything. I was worried. I spoke with the doctors and the fitness coach Massimo Neri, but the situation was a mentality problem," he added.

During the World Cup, England had struggled to qualify from their Group C, drawing with the United States and Algeria, and was later humiliated by Germany in the Round of 16.

Capello further said that he would not alter his management style when he begins preparations for next month's 2012 European Championships qualification campaign.

"I won't do anything differently because we only have a short time with the players. I will just try to create the spirit of the group," he added.

The Italian will start over again when he begins preparations for Wednesday's friendly with Hungary at Wembley. (ANI)

'Ageing' Man U stars unlikely to win Premier League: Lineker

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 01:37 PM

London, Aug 8(ANI): Former England footballer Gary Lineker reckons that Manchester United's ageing stars may find this season's Premier League title out of their reach.

"Rio Ferdinand is seemingly on his last legs, Ryan Giggs can't go on for ever, Paul Scholes can't go on for ever, Gary Neville can't go on for ever," News of The World quoted Lineker, as saying.

"History shows Sir Alex Ferguson's transitional phases don't usually last very long. But financially, where are they? They haven't spent a lot of money. Will they improve massively on last season? Unlikely," he added.

The 49-year-old further thinks Chelsea are worthy favourites, but fancies Arsenal to mount a more sustained challenge than last season.

"I've got a sneaky feeling for Arsenal. If they come up with a top goalkeeper, they will have a chance," Lineker said. (ANI)

Haddin targets India tour return

Sun, Aug 08 10 01:21 PM

Melbourne, Aug 8 (PTI) Wicket-keeper Brad Haddin is hoping for a shock return to the Australia team for the tour of India next month after undergoing a radical blood treatment of his elbow tendon injury that made batting impossible. The 32-year-old, who has played 27 Tests since Adam Gilchrist retired his wicketkeeper gloves, missed last month''s one-day series against England and the two Tests played against Pakistan because of the injury. He suffered the injury in March while playing against New Zealand and aggravated it during the Twenty20 World Cup in England. Haddin is buoyed by the relief he experienced after a recent blood treatment that has been used to help fast-track American footballers recover from ligament injuries. The procedure involves blood being drawn from his body and the red blood cells and plasma separated. A doctor injected the resultant concentration of platelets back into the affected area, and Haddin said he''s felt relief ever since. "I''ve had two (procedures) and the second injection seemed to calm the tendon down and that has allowed me to get some strength back into my arm," he said. "Touch wood, but it hasn''t responded badly at all... I''ve been ''shadow batting'', which I guess is a bit like playing air guitar, and it''s a good sign," he was quoted as saying by ''Sydney Morning Herald''. Australia visit India for a two-Test and three-ODI tour starting from October 1. They will play a tour match from September 25-27 at Mohali.

Galacticos bring Galaxy back down to earth

Real Madrid's Esteban Granero (L) is challenged by Los Angeles Galaxy's Todd Dunivant during the...

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 01:17 PM

Real scored the winning goal in the 71st minute when Galaxy substitute goalkeeper Brian Perk could only parry a shot into the path of Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso, whose looping shot from the edge of the area took a deflection before finding the net.

Injured Haddin eyeing India tour comeback following revolutionary blood treatment

Published>Sun, Aug 08 10 12:37 PM

Sydney, Aug 8(ANI): Australian wicket-keeper Brad Haddin is aiming to earn his place back in the national team for next month's tour of India after undergoing a novel blood treatment to fast-track his recovery from injury.

Haddin missed last month's ODI series against England and the two Tests played against Pakistan that followed due to a tendon injury that made batting impossible for him.

The 32-year-old has worked hard to overcome the problem, but was helped by a recent treatment that resulted in having his blood drawn and the red blood cells and plasma separated.

A doctor injected the resultant concentration of platelets back into the affected area, and Haddin insists that he has felt relief ever since.

"I've had two [procedures] and the second injection seemed to calm the tendon down and that has allowed me to get some strength back into my arm," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Haddin, as saying.

"Touch wood, but it hasn't responded badly at all ... I've been 'shadow batting', which I guess is a bit like playing air guitar, and it's a good sign," he added.

The tour to India is due to begin on September 25 and end on October 24.

It consists of two Tests in Mohali and Bangalore, as well as a three-match ODI series. (ANI)
