ICC asks suspended Pak players to be cautious over statements

Published>Thu, Nov 04 10 12:28 PM

Lahore, Nov 4(ANI): The International Cricket Council has directed Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt and fast bowler Mohammad Amir to be cautious in giving statements regarding their suspension over the 'spot-fixing' scandal.

Amir's lawyer Shahid Karim said that the ICC response is right, and insisted that the players would ensure that their final hearing is not affected negatively.

Karim said that Amir's reaction was not an extra-ordinary act, but a natural response, the News reports.

Butt and Amir had earlier accused the ICC of having an anti-Pakistan agenda after their suspensions for alleged 'spot-fixing' were upheld.

The ICC's code of conduct commission, headed by Michael Beloff, upheld the suspensions after a two-day hearing in Dubai on Sunday.

The duo along with Mohammad Asif was suspended in September after a British tabloid alleged that they were involved in 'spot-fixing' the Lord's Test against England in August.

"They heard us, but it was as if 'say whatever you want to say, we have come with a decision'. Their decision was not based on a single piece of evidence against us. We requested from them the next date of the hearing, but they didn't give us," Butt had said.

Amir had insisted that the ICC had made up its mind even before the hearing in Dubai.

"To me it appeared as if this is a conspiracy to defame Pakistan cricket. I am hurt and sad because we want the truth to come out," Amir said.

"I am disappointed because they didn't even tell us the reason for rejecting our appeals. It appeared to be as if the decision of the hearing had been made beforehand," he added.

Butt and Amir had hoped that the lifting of their suspensions would allow them to take part in the ongoing ODI and Test series against South Africa.

The innocence or guilt of the players will now be judged at an independent tribunal, the date of which has yet to be set. (ANI)

Scandal-hit Rooney to get a Guy Fawkes bonfire greeting

Published>Thu, Nov 04 10 12:22 PM

London, Nov.4 (ANI): A bonfire society has revealed that it plans to give scandal-hit Manchester United star Wayne Rooney a Guy Fawkes bonfire greeting over the weekend.

Rooney has been cast in the form of the animated ogre Shrek. The 49-foot-tall steel-framed structure will go up in flames at Edenbridge Bonfire Society's annual parade and display on Saturday.

According to The Telegraph, crowds of up to 15,000 spectators are expected to see the structure packed with fireworks going up with a bang.

Dressed in full kit, including the club's famous red shirt, the effigy depicts Rooney clutching a copy of his lucrative new five-year contract under one arm, while in his other hand is a holdall full of cash.

Charles Laver, of the Kent-based society, said Rooney was chosen as this year's guy after being plastered all over the tabloids in recent months.

In September he hit the headlines over allegations he slept with two prostitutes while wife Coleen was pregnant with their son Kai.

Then his loyalty to Manchester United was thrown into doubt when he suggested he would leave, before going on to sign the new contract with the club.

Laver said: "I hate football myself so I'm quite happy to burn a footballer. 'One of our members is a big Man U fan, so he's been advising us on getting all the details of the kit just right."(ANI)

Gibbs has no regrets for calling Pak fans "bunch of animals"

Thu, Nov 04 10 12:18 PM

Johannesburg, Nov 4 (PTI) Out-of-favour veteran South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs has no regrets about the "bunch of animals" remark directed towards the Pakistani fans during a Test at Centurion in 2007 but said by no means he was a racist. In his recently published controversial autobiography, ''To The Point'', Gibbs wrote that the entire South African team was "irritated" by the unruly behaviour of the Pakistani supporters during that match. "I think it was a tactic aimed at getting me out of the team rather than them being mortally offended by the ''racial'' slur. It was a gambit to disrupt the Proteas more than anything else," he wrote. "They made a huge noise and even kicked Rashard, my son, and his mom, Liesl, out of their seats when they took over the area next to the pitch entrance that leads up to the changing room. "All of us Proteas were getting pretty irritated and unfortunately the stump microphones picked up our displeasure. I was standing at gully, Graeme Smith was at slip and we were both looking at these morons. We agreed that a little verbal retaliation as in order. ''Stop acting like a bunch of fucking animals!'' I said. I can''t remember what Graeme said," the 36-year-old right-handed batsman wrote. "We all had something to say about those supporters on the day, but after listening to the recording, it was decided that mine was the one voice that they could identify. I listened to the recording later, at the hearing, and you could hear Graeme''s voice loud and clear. He still laughs about how he got away without being charged to this day. I guess I had to take one for the team," he added. Gibbs was initially banned for two Test matches for the offensive language but was later changed to a Test, one T20 and an ODI game. Still furious about the allegations of being a racist, Gibbs maintained that his remarks were not intentional. "You could call me many, many things, but a racist was a bit of a stretch, to say the least. Especially concerning Muslims. I''m coloured, for goodness'' sake. I''ve got four Muslim aunts and about 10 Muslim cousins. How could I be racist? My damn family is Muslim," he wrote in the book. PTI FH SSC

Oz inability to destroy opposing teams a serious issue: Clarke

Published>Thu, Nov 04 10 11:52 AM

London, Nov 4 (ANI): Stand in skipper Michael Clarke has said that inability to destroy opposing teams is becoming a serious issue for the Australian team.

Clarke was at loss of words after Sri Lanka staged one of the great comebacks, setting up a one-wicket win with 34 balls left in their opening one-day international in Melbourne.

The Lankans who were out of the contest at 107 for eight, in reply to Australia's 239 for eight from 50 overs, came back strongly with help of a record ninth-wicket stand between Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga to secure a thrilling victory.

Their 132-run partnership set a world record for the ninth wicket in one-day internationals, beating a mark that had stood for 27 years, The Telegraph reports.

Clarke, who is deputising for Ricky Ponting, said: "What I'm so disappointed about is we got so close again and we couldn't finish the game off, which is an issue we've had for a while now in all three forms of the game."

"We've got to look at that and ask ourselves questions, find out what we can do to improve that. Execution cost us with both bat and ball - having them 8-107 we got hit around the park," he said.

"Mathews is a very good player but Malinga is a No 10, a good No 10, but he's still a No 10 batsman. If we're good enough to execute our plans and get the top order out, I don't see any reason why we can't do it to the tailenders.

"But it's not the first time it's happened and it's something we need to look at," Clarke added. (ANI)

Injury rules Australia's Marsh out of one-day series

Thu, Nov 04 10 10:18 AM

Australia batsman Shaun Marsh has been ruled out of the remainder of the one-day series against Sri Lanka after injuring his lower back in Wednesday's opening defeat, Cricket Australia said on Thursday.

Promising middle order batsman Callum Ferguson will join the squad in place of lefthander Marsh for the final two matches against Sri Lanka -- in Sydney on Friday and Brisbane on Sunday.

"It's an unfortunate injury for Shaun," chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said in a news release.

"However, it does create another opportunity for Callum Ferguson to come back into the Australian one-day team and press his claims."

Australia have lost their last six matches in all forms of cricket and are desperate to return to winning ways before the Ashes test series against England begins in Brisbane on Nov. 25.

Pratik Shah rescues Saurashtra with maiden ton

Wed, Nov 03 10 10:46 PM

Mumbai, Nov 3 (PTI) A maiden unbeaten ton by southpaw Pratik Shah and his 152-run seventh wicket partnership with Rakesh Dhruv gave Saurashtra hopes of avoiding the ignominy of a follow-on on day three of their Elite division group A Ranji Trophy match against Mumbai here today. Chasing Mumbai''s first-innings total of 580 for nine declared, Saurashtra, who were struggling at 209 for six at one stage, ended the day at 364 for the loss of seven wickets, still 66 runs away from avoiding the follow-on mark. The dismissal of Dhruv 49 (162m 98b 4x8), who was trapped in front by offie Ramesh Powar in the last over of the day, tilted the scales back in Mumbai favour. Mehta, unbeaten on 100 (181m, 147b, 4x17), and Sandeep Maniar (2) were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day. Earlier, resuming at 94 for two, Ravindra Jadeja and Bhushan Chauhan began cautiously and added 49 runs to the total before Rohit Sharma, who was dismissed by Jadeja, got his revenge. Jadeja, who shared a third-wicket partnership of 84 runs with Chauhan, was out for 40 (135m, 103b, 4x6). Chauhan was dismissed soon after, by off-spinner Ramesh Powar for a patient 63 (190m, 192b, 4x6). Skipper Jaidev Shah and stumper Sagar Jogiyani could not do much and were both dismissed for an identical score of 19, leaving Mehta and Dhruv, who batted for almost 40 overs, to stage the rescue act. For Mumbai, Powar claimed his 22nd five wicket haul, ending the day with figures of 5-109, while pacer Avishkar Salvi and Sharma shared a wicket each.

Indore, Nov 3 (PTI) Brilliant batting display by Swapnil Asnodkar (84) and Vidyut Shivramakrishnan (58) helped Goa to make a comeback and score 268 for three in their second innings against Madhya Pradesh in the Plate Group ''A'' Ranji trophy match at Holkar Stadium here today. JCT beat Churchill 1-0, qualify for Durand final

Wed, Nov 03 10 10:22 PM

New Delhi, Nov 3 (PTI) In an exciting contest that went down to the wire, JCT rode on Amandeep Singh''s extra-time strike to knock out defending champions Churchill Brothers and book a final berth in the 123rd Durand Cup football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here today. After both teams failed to find the net in regulation time, Amandeep, running in towards the post from the left, lobbed one past Churchill Brothers custodian Vinay Singh with his right foot in the 101 minute of the fist semifinal, to bring an end to the Goans'' campaign. Much of the credit for the all-important goal should also go to Daniel Bidemi -- his flicked header off JCT goalkeeper Pawan Kumar''s kickback landed in the zone for Amandeep to lob the ball into the Churchill Brothers net. "I am very happy for that assist that led to the all-important goal, but I must appreciate Amandeep''s effort who pulled off a nice goal," Bidemi said after the match. While Amandeep broke the deadlock, it was Pawan who turned out to be the real hero for the winners. An understudy to former JCT goalkeeper Karanjit Singh for the last few years, Pawan made some brilliant saves today, and was equal to the task against dangerman Okolie Odafe. The defending champions could have taken the lead just before Amandeep''s strike had it not been for Pawan, who stretched full length on the right to block Odafe''s power-packed freekick. Going by the standards he has set for himself, it won''t be wrong to say that Odafe had an off-colour day, though he was marked by almost the entire JCT outfit. "That was the ploy," JCT coach Parminder Singh said after the match. The absence of a few important players, especially stopper Gouramangi Singh, who are currently with the national team in Dubai, did not help the Goans'' cause. Odafe had a chance to break the ice on the 90th minute, but he shot Zakeer M P''s through ball wide off the post. Churchill Brothers were also not helped by woodwork -- at least on three occasions they were denied. Ismail Gurung, after a sortie from the right flank, sent a diagonal that hit the crosspiece, and after that, Odafe missed to score off the rebound. Even as Churchill attacked with alarming regularity at the start of second half, JCT played a composed game to wriggle out of the difficult situation. Their defence, manned by stoppers Rahul Kumar and Omolaja Nurain Kareem, and well supported by rightback Daljit Singh and Lal Chuanmawia on the left, didn''t give any space to Odafe. Earlier JCT started the match on a positive note, and Bidemi''s angled shot off Daljit cross that was parried away by Vinay, was an indication of things to come. The last time JCT had played in a Durand final was in 2006, when they lost to Dempo by a solitary goal. The outfit from Punjab have won the tournament, the third oldest in the world, on five occasions.

Kamala Harris clings to lead for California attorney general

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 10:16 PM

Washington, Nov 3 (IANS) Hours after Indian-American Nikki Haley created history by winning the governor's job in South Carolina, another woman of Indian origin, Kamala Harris holds a razor-thin lead in the election for attorney general of California.

With nearly 7 million ballots counted, Democrat Harris, daughter of an Indian mother and African-American father, was holding a lead of fewer than 38,000 votes over Republican Steve Cooley in the race for state attorney general.

But with thousands of late absentee and provisional ballots remaining uncounted, she has not been declared a winner.

If her victory holds, Harris would become the first Indian-African-American and first woman ever to hold the job of California attorney general.

Cooley, the Los Angeles County district attorney, jumped out to an early lead over Harris as the votes were being counted across the state Tuesday night.

Cooley declared victory and scheduled a victory press conference for Wednesday morning. But as the race tightened, Cooley's campaign announced he was cancelling the press conference until the race had a more definitive result.

Born and raised in the East Bay, Kamala was elected as the first woman district attorney in San Francisco's history in December 2003, and as the first African-American woman and South Asian American woman in California to hold the office.

She was overwhelmingly re-elected for a second term in November 2007.

Kamala is the daughter of Shyamala Gopalan, a Tamilian breast cancer specialist who travelled to the US from Chennai, to pursue her graduate studies at University of California, Berkeley.

After attending public schools, Kamala was led by her strong commitment to justice and public service to Howard University, America's oldest historically Black university, and then to the University of California and Hastings College of the Law.

California's largest legal newspaper, The Daily Journal, designated Kamala as one of the top 75 women litigators in California 'the only elected official to receive that honour' as well as one of the top 100 lawyers in the state.

She was recognised as a 'Woman of Power' by the National Urban League and received the Thurgood Marshall Award from the National Black Prosecutors Association. She has been featured on the Oprah Show and in Newsweek as one of 'America's 20 Most Powerful Women'.

Malhotra lashes out at sports ministry over guidelines

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 10:06 PM

New Delhi, Nov 3 (IANS) Vijay Kumar Malhotra, president of the General Association of National Sports Federations (GANSF), Wednesday lashed out at the Union Sports Ministry for deliberately going after the sports officials, adopting double standards.

Malhotra, who is also the president of the Archery Association of India (AAI), asked why should the government be so concerned about the tenure and age of the officials of the National Sports Federations (NSF) when there is no cap on the officials in any other fields.

'When there is no cap on the tenure or the upper age limitation for Prime Minister, Union Ministers, chief ministers, MPs and MLAs, why should the elected officials of sports federations be unfairly singled out,' Malhotra asked.

'After all, like MPs and MLAs, we also get elected. Moreover, all NSF elections are held democratically and transparently. Importantly, we are not paid employees of government. If the government guidelines have to be implemented then they should be done uniformally. For that matter, no registered body will accept this fiat,' Malhotra told IANS.

Malhotra said the Indian Olympic Association, of which he is a vice-president, will soon take a decision to go to the Supreme Court and also take the matter to other democratic forums.

'If the government thinks the younger people are good for good governance, then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's age is 76 and most chief ministers of the country, including the Delhi CM Shiela Dikshit, are above 70.

'Even the Sports Minister M.S. Gill himself is well past 70. If these people quit, then we will follow suit.

'Take a look at the presidents of most international federations, including the International Olympic Committee, Olympic Council of Asia, Commonwealth Games Federation, they are all into their 70s and have been around for long. They are there because of their competence and their services to the sport,' said Malhotra.

The Ministry listed the federations which are functioning in violation of the government guidelines when the Delhi High Court directed the Centre to implement the National Sports Policy. The list shows nearly 40 per cent of the NSFs have violated the tenure clause of three terms of four years each and some of them are over 70.

Malik confident of making a return to team for World Cup

Wed, Nov 03 10 09:52 PM

Lahore, Nov 3 (PTI) Former Test captain Shoaib Malik is confident of regaining his place in the Pakistan squad for the 50-over cricket World Cup next year on the sub-continent and said he is looking to put up a good performance in the forthcoming domestic cricket tournaments. The national selection committee had ignored the former skipper for the ongoing series against South Africa in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The selectors instead named him captain for the Hong Kong super sixes tournament to be held on November 6-7. Malik will leave for Hong Kong later tonight. "I have not given up hope of playing in the mega event and I am confident given my past record they (selectors) will keep me in the preliminary list of 30 players," Malik said. The seasoned allrounder, who was also dropped for the one-day series in England this year, said his confidence stemmed from the fact that he was named captain to lead the national team in the Hong Kong sixes tournament. "The selectors have indicated they still believe in me. I am training hard and I am taking every opportunity to play cricket. After returning from Hong Kong I will be playing domestic cricket and hope to do well in that to bring myself into contention for the full tour to New Zealand next month and then the World Cup," he said. Pakistan is scheduled to play two tests, six one-day internationals and two T20 matches in New Zealand. Malik said he was not dejected over being dropped from the national team as he knew these tough times come in every professional cricketer''s life. "One has to cope with it and just respond with good and solid performances. I know I have lot of cricket left in me in every form of the game that is why I am looking forward to the World Cup," he added. Malik also described the performance of the national team against South Africa as good but felt luck was not favouring them. "I think the area we need to really work hard on is how to finish off matches properly and not to allow opponents to fight back after we get their early wickets," he said. Malik, who is still without a central contract said, he knew that there was a lot of competition for the World Cup but once he got into the preliminary squad, he could also make the final list.

Umpires must step up and make better decisions: Dhoni

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 09:38 PM

Ahmedabad, Nov 3 (ANI): Indian cricket skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday giving a mixed review to the Umpire Decision Reviewal System (UDRS) said the umpires must step up and make better decisions.

Dhoni said UDRS would check major mistakes the umpires have made in the past, but it would also diminish their role on the field.

"Quite a few decisions, you know, it is surprising to see umpire make that mistake. That could have been avoided if UDRS (Umpire Decision Review System) was there, but does that give the umpire the liberty of giving wrong decisions? As professionals, they get paid to be there, which means they really have to step up," said Dhoni.

The Indian skipper claimed that international ranking does not mean much to the Indian side, and their goal was only to deliver the best.

"I don't think many players in this side, or the support staff is bothered too much about the rankings. But what we are bothered about is how we do on the field. You know, whether we are prepared well for the game, whether we have planned well for the opposition, and accordingly give hundred percent on the field," said Dhoni, while addressing a press conference here today.

Dhoni said he hoped that the team players suffered no injuries in the ongoing series, as many more tournaments are lined up for them.

"For me, I think the major concern is the injury concern because we have important series coming up. After this we go to South Africa and then we have the World Cup, which is like a big tournament meant for us. You see, the last few series that we have played, more often then not, we have missed key players specially the bowlers," he added.

The team is scheduled to play three Test matches series against New Zealand beginning on November 4 at Motera, near Ahmedabad.

The second Test match will be played from November 12 to 16 in Hyderabad, followed by the final match in Nagpur from November 20.

The One Day International (ODI) series kicks off on November 28 with the first match to be played at Guwahati. (ANI)

PCB suspends central contract of tainted trio

Wed, Nov 03 10 08:52 PM

Karachi, Nov 3 (PTI) Pakistan''s disgraced trio of Salman Butt, Mohammed Aamir and Mohammed Asif have had their central contracts suspended by the Pakistan Cricket Board. A senior official of the PCB said on Wednesday that the central contracts of the three players stood suspended from November 1. He explained that until the International Cricket Council (ICC) takes a final call on their provisional suspensions and also on the spot fixing allegations against them, they can''t get any benefits from the board. "Only those players are given contracts who can play for Pakistan. Since these three can''t represent Pakistan until the final decision on their suspensions their contracts are suspended," Director of International Cricket Operations, Zakir Khan said. Tafazzul Rizvi the legal advisor of the board said that the contracts were suspended in line with the ICC anti-corruption code of conduct laws. The three players were provisionally suspended by the ICC on September 2 when they were touring England. The suspensions came after a British tabloid did a sting operation and report that the three had allegedly taken bribes to indulge in spot fixing during the fourth Test against England at Lord''s. Butt and Amir appealed against the provisional suspensions but the head of the ICC code of conduct commission upheld their suspensions after a two-day hearing in Dubai last weekend. Rizvi said until the appeal hearing was held their contracts remained but now they were suspended. He pointed out that the Board Chairman had last month only also given instructions to stop all payments to the suspended trio including monthly retainers of their contracts. "The board at present is not providing any sort of help or support to the players and they now have to contest the suspensions and allegations against them by themselves," Rizvi said. Salman and Amir on returning from Dubai said they were disappointed by the rejection of their appeals. They feel that the ICC was trying to corner Pakistan cricket. "We are being punished for being Pakistanis," Salman said.

Wed, Nov 03 10 08:38 PM

New Delhi, Nov 3 (PTI) Giving a new twist to his payment row with the BCCI, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar today said it was former BCCI President Sharad Pawar who promised "extra payment" to him for his services as an IPL Governing Council member. Gavaskar had yesterday hit out at the Cricket Board for not paying him for his role in the IPL Governing Council, a claim which was promptly refuted by the BCCI. In a fresh revelations, Gavaskar said he is now waiting for Pawar to meet current BCCI head Shashank Manohar to work out the matter. "I am now waiting for Mr Sharad Pawar, the then President of BCCI, to arrange a meeting with the current President of BCCI to help untangle and resolve this ''demanding'' matter, since it was he who made the offer for the extra payment over and above the original amount given to the former players on the Governing Council and on whose word I agreed to come on board the Governing Council," Gavaskar said in a statement. Gavaskar has found support from suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi, who said the former India captain had always been forthright in his dealings and never known to be a liar. "A lot has been said about Sunny. All I can tell you is that in all my dealings with Sunny, I''ve never known him to be a liar or anything. Sunny has been forthright. I''m sure they''ll sort it out," Modi said in London. Wed, Nov 03 10 07:52 PM

London, Nov 3 (PTI) A day after the BCCI denied that Sunil Gavaskar was due any payment for his term as an IPL Governing Council member, suspended chairman of the Twenty20 league Lalit Modi said the former India captain had always been forthright in his dealings and never known to be a liar. Gavaskar had yesterday hit out at the Cricket Board for not paying him for his role in the IPL Governing Council, a claim which was promptly refuted by the BCCI. "A lot has been said about Sunny. Ranji Trophy: Late strikes put Tamil Nadu on top

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 07:36 PM

Chennai, Nov 3 (IANS) A double strike late in the day by seamer Lakshmipathy Balaji left Assam precariously placed at 159 for four in the second innings, still trailing Tamil Nadu by three runs on the penultimate day of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match here Wednesday.

It left the experienced Sridharan Sriram (87 not out) with the task of salvaging the situation for Assam Thursday with not much of batting to follow.

Behind by 162 runs on the first innings after Tamil Nadu declared at 346 for nine, Assam began their second innings shakily, losing opener Parvez Aziz in the very second over.

Dheeraj Jadhav (38) and Sriram put on 112 runs for the second wicket, before Tamil Nadu bowlers struck thrice.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin got rid of Jadhav and then Balaji removed skipper Amol Mazumdar (2) and Deepak Sharma (2) as Assam slid to 118 for four.

Thereafter, Sriram and Tarjinder Singh (23 not out) saw the day off, but face a challenging task on the final day as Tamil Nadu sense a possible victory.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu, resuming at 300 for four, lost wickets in a hurry on the third morning. Both Anirudha Srikkanth (95) and Sathish Rajagopal (74), the overnight batsmen who looked good for a century apiece, were dismissed in quick succession before tail-ender Chandrasekar Ganapathy (24) hung on to stretch the total.

Gibbs never mixed freely with team members: Arthur

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 07:06 PM

Sydney, Nov 3 (IANS) Mickey Arthur Wednesday called Herchelle Gibbs a 'bit of a loner' and dismissed the opener's claims in his autobiography that skipper Graeme Smith had too much power when he was the coach of the South African cricket team.

Arthur quit as coach of South Africa last January and now coaches Western Australia,

Arthur said that during his tenure Gibbs was hardly part of the side and had little idea what was happening within the team.

He said Gibbs never interacted with fellow players and did not have the best of relationship with Smith.

'He was a little bit of a loner, he sort of hung by himself, he never really mixed too freely with the rest of the group,' Arthur was quoted as saying in The Sydney Morning Herald.

'He certainly did not mix with Graeme at all and I guess there was a little barrier between the two there.'

Gibbs, in his autobiography 'To The Point', gives a deep account of how he and his team mates indulged in sex orgies, regular alcohol abuse and drug use on many cricket tours. He also accuses Smith of being too powerful in the team which led to divisions within the team.

'For the last three years of my time, Herschelle was in and out of the side, he was not there for most of the time,' Arthur said.

'I hope he has not burnt too many bridges.

'He would not know the conversations that Graeme and I had in private, he had no idea about the relationships between the management and the players because he was not privy to any of that.

'Herschelle was trying to salvage a career towards the back end, so he was trying anything,' Arthur said.

Mathews, Malinga help Sri Lanka snatch victory from defeat in Melbourne ODI

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 06:52 PM

Melbourne, Nov 3(ANI): Sri Lanka on Wednesday won the nail-biting Melbourne ODI against Australia by one-wicket, powered by a brilliant 132-run ninth-wicket partnership between Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga.

In reply to Australia's 239-8, Sri Lanka were staring at defeat at 107-8 when No.10 Malinga came to join Mathews.

he task did look difficult, but Mathews scored an unbeaten 77 off 84 balls to handle the rest of the innings with Malinga who scored 56 off 48 balls.

The duo batted for 18.2 overs and was inching closer to the target when Malinga was run out with one run required.

However, last man Muttiah Muralidaran (four not out) did not disappoint, and finished the innings off in style by hitting a boundary down the leg side off Shane Watson.

Talking about the match, Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara lauded both the batsman, and also reserved special appreciation for Mathews.

"Angelo and Lasith were unbelievable. He is the greatest asset we have had over the last year. He can bowl, he can bat, total champion. He is still 21, 22," Sangakkara said.

Australian captain Michael Clarke was shocked to have lost the match from an unbelievable position, but admitted Sri Lanka deserved full credit for the victory.

"I honestly don't know how we lost this game. I thought we could have done better with the bat, but from 8 for 107... Having said that, full credit must go to Sri Lanka," Clarke said.

rief Scorecard:

Australia 239-8 (Hussey 71 not out, Perera 5-46)

Sri Lanka 243-9 (Mathews 77 not out, Malinga 56, Doherty 4-46) (ANI)

India look to extending Test cricket domination

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 06:08 PM

Ahmedabad, Nov 3 (IANS) It has been a fantastic year for India and their great batsman Sachin Tendulkar. A clean sweep against Australia last month gave the Indians a firm grip on the number one ranking in Tests and they should not find it all that difficult to roll over a struggling young New Zealand side in the three-Test series, beginning here Thursday.

The first Test could also turn out to be significant for Tendulkar who is one short of his 50th hundred in Tests. He has run up 1,270 runs in nine Tests this year, hitting six centuries and a 98 to record a Bradmanesque average of 97.69. In such a terrific form, a century here is very much on the cards.

The Indian star also has an enviable record against New Zealand, having amassed 1,406 runs in 19 Tests.

After their convincing 2-0 victory in the Test series against Australia, India are naturally upbeat whereas the Black Caps have to show drastic improvement if they have to raise themselves up after their 0-4 ODI whitewash in Bangladesh.

The last time New Zealand played in India was in 2003 and it was a drawn series, with neither side winning any match. New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori is the only surviving member of that series. Vettori, 31, will be, turning out in his 100th Test for his country and needs 38 runs to become the third all-rounder after Kapil Dev and Ian Botham to complete 4,000 runs and 300 wickets in Test cricket.

The visitors have three unheralded players in the side -- batsman Kane Williamson and fast bowlers Hamish Bennett and Andy McKay. Only Chris Martin and Brendon McCullum have played more than 50 Tests. Martin, who has taken 187 wickets in 56 Tests, will lead the pace attack with Vettori providing the spin support. McCullum will be the mainstay of the New Zealand batting.

Even the big hitting Ross Taylor has just 25 Test caps to his name.

On the other hand, the hosts have match winners Rahul Dravid, V.V.S. Laxman and Virender Sehwag besides Tendulkar -- all barring Sehwag, with 100 plus Tests under their belts. Add Gautam Gambhir to this illustrious list and India, perhaps, have the best batting line-up in the world.

The Indians have an equally potent attack with the experienced Zaheer Khan leading it with young Ishant Sharma and Shantakumaran Sreesanth doing their bit at the other end. Harbahajan Singh was equally impressive against the Australians.

Squads (from):

India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina, Cheteshwar Pujara, Murali Vijay, Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Shantakumaran Sreesanth, Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra.

New Zealand: Daniel Vettori (captain), Brent Arnel, Hamish Bennett, Martin Guptill, Gareth Hopkins, Chris Martin, Brendon McCullum, Tim McIntosh, Andy McKay, Jeetan Patel, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling, Kane Williamson.

India need to improve defence lapses ahead of Asiad: Rajpal

Wed, Nov 03 10 05:38 PM

New Delhi, Nov 3 (PTI) Indian team needs to improve the short corner conversion rate and sort out its minor defence lapses to produce a commendable performance in the Asian Games, feels skipper Rajpal Singh. India finished second in the Commonwealth Games after losing 0-8 to Australia in the final of the event but Rajpal refused to blame any individual or any particular aspect of the game for conceding too many goals as hockey is a team sport. "You cannot blame only defence for failure. Hockey is a collective sport and everyone needs to chip-in," Rajpal said today on the sidelines of a felicitation function organised by ''Samsung India''. "The team is in good shape and will look to present a commendable performance in China. Every team intends to win and we will take it as one game at a time. However, China and Japan will pose good competition," the Indian forward added. Interestingly, India has not won a gold medal in the Asian Games since 1998. "Our main intention is to qualify for the London Olympics to be held in 2012. The team would look to reduce the errors. Also penalty corner conversion needs to be improved. We have been doing well in converting our short corners, but it needs to be further improved," he said. Asked whether the team morale is down after an 8-0 drubbing at the hands of Australia in the finals of recently concluded CWG, Rajpal said, "It was just an off day and we are not looking at that." Talking about the newly introduced Global Positioning System (GPS) in the Indian hockey, Singh said it is good to incorporate technology in the game as it helps to improve the quality of game and enables you to maintain your focus on the rough patches. Asked if the Indian hockey team requires the services of a sports psychologist, the forward said, "No body can do any magic in such a short span of time." Asian Games will be held in Guangzhou, China from November 12 to 27.

CWG irregularities: BJP charges PMO, Union Cabinet for approving cost escalations

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 05:08 PM

New Delhi, Nov 3 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) upping its ante on Commonwealth Games irregularities on Wednesday claimed that the Prime Minister's Office and the Union Cabinet approved cost escalations for the 2010 Games projects five times between 2007 and 2009 that shot the expenditure up from Rs 1000 crore to over Rs 2,400 crore.

"The Cabinet approved Rs 1000 crore budget in its meeting on March 15, 2007. The revised cost estimate passed by the Cabinet stood at Rs 2,460 crore on March 5, 2009," said BJP President Nitin Gadkari in a statement here today quoting from the Cabinet notes.

Gadkari alleging that the documents mention the role of the Prime Minister's Office, Cabinet, Group of Ministers, Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) and the Ministries concerned said all major proposals were first processed by the concerned ministries, then by the EFC, then by the PMO and later approved by the Cabinet.

"The Commonwealth Games were allotted to Delhi on November 11, 2003, but detailed estimates were considered and approved by the Cabinet on March 15, 2007," he added.

Alleging that the recently held XIXth Commonwealth Games was a victim of rampant bungling, Nitin Gadkari had earlier on October 19 squarely blamed the Prime Minister's Office for the same.

Gadkari said: "The Games were budgeted at around Rs. 8000 crore which went upto Rs. 70,000 crore with the approval of the Prime Minister's Office and the Cabinet."

"Every CWG file has the Prime Minister's signature on it. How can the government release such a huge amount of money for the Games, without a thorough enquiry on where the amount is being spent?" asked Gadkari.

Demanding a joint parliamentary probe into CWG irregularities, Gadkari said the investigation should include all agencies of the Centre as well as the Delhi Government. (ANI)

'Guangzhou Asiad to have largest-ever number of dope tests'

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 04:52 PM

The 16th Asian Games in the city of Guangzhou this month will have the "largest-ever number" of dope tests in the event's history, a top anti-doping official here has claimed.

"We will have about 1,500 urine samples and 200 blood samples during the Asian Games," said Zhao Jian, deputy director general of the China Anti-doping Agency (CHINADA), who is in charge of doping control for the Asiad.

"The number is a record for the Asian Games and we will start work on November 6," he was quoted as saying by the official media here.

The Games will take place from Nov 12 to 27 in Guangzhou. Chinese official say the event will attract about 11,700 athletes from 45 countries who will compete for 476 gold medals.

During the Doha Asian Games four years ago, about 1,200 samples were tested and blood testing was introduced for the first time.

All the urine samples for the Asian Games will be sent to CHINADA's laboratory in Beijing, which carried out the doping tests for the 2008 Olympic Games.

The samples will be flown to Beijing each day. Like the Beijing Games, negative results will be reported within 24 hours of its arrival at the lab while positive results will be reported within 48 hours.

"During the Guangzhou Asian Games, there will be about 100 staff working for the doping control and about 30 staff in the lab," Zhao said.

"The doping control and tests will be conducted along Olympic standards as we upgraded two thirds of our facilities before the Beijing Games," he said.

"Three foreign experts will also work in the laboratory and the management system for all the samples and results will be in accordance with the rules. Athletes from all the countries and regions can be at ease that the process will be conducted fairly," he said.

Chinese officials say utmost importance will be accorded to a clean doping record. To ensure the Chinese athletes have clean home Games, all members of the team will receive strict anti-doping training, examinations and drug tests before entering the Asian Games Village.

"For the Guangzhou Asian Games, China will send its largest-ever delegation and one of the priorities for the squad is to be clean at the Games," Zhao said.

"Starting in September, experts from CHINADA went to give lectures and supervise the examinations of athletes at all the training bases across the country. Athletes could only qualify for the Asian Games if they passed the paper examination and the drug tests," Zhao said.

The access system requires all athletes training for the Asian Games to attend anti-doping lectures and pass a written examination.

An access system manual was also given to China team members. They had to write down what they learned from the lectures and keep records of doping tests and medicine taken in a personal manual.

They also had to sign a letter of commitment in the manual, along with their coaches and team leaders.

"This is the first time we have applied such a well-planned access system before such a big event. No one can escape such tests," he said.

Besides education and exams, all the athletes will be tested for drugs without prior notification.

"We have conducted drug tests here for all the athletes that will compete in Guangzhou. For those who are competing abroad right now, they will receive their tests as soon as they come back," he said.

"All the athletes have to be proved clean before moving into the Asian Games Village. Athletes and coaches who have dirty records in doping tests will have no chance to represent China in Guangzhou," he said.

Up to now, Zhao's agency has conducted more than 10,000 doping tests on Chinese athletes this year, but some top athletes have still tested positive on the international stage.

In May, Chinese judoka Tong Wen, the champion in the women's over 78kg class at the Beijing Olympics, was suspended for two years for a positive test for clenbuterol, which can boost muscles like an anabolic steroid.

Then, Li Fuyu, the nation's most prominent professional road cyclist and a Radioshack teammate of US legend Lance Armstrong, was confirmed as having failed a test for the same substance in August.

Both of them claimed to be innocent, complaining about tainted pork they ate. Zhao said dubious food should not be an excuse for testing positive and all athletes should be very disciplined about what they ingest.

"Professional athletes should pay extreme attention to their food and drinks it is their responsibility," said Zhao.

"I don't think they can blame tainted food. If the food is a problem, why did others who ate it not fail? It's very easy for the athletes to lose themselves in the face of the wealth and glory they gain by winning. It's difficult for athletes to find the balance between competing fairly and chasing the rewards. We still have a long way to go in the education of athletes. I hope the efforts we make for the Asian Games will benefit them in the future."

England not interested in drawn Ashes: Prior

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 04:38 PM

Perth (Australia), Nov.3 (ANI) England need only a draw to retain the Ashes after winning last year's series 2-1, but Andrew Strauss's team does not seem interested in such a possibility.

With Australia ripe for the picking after slipping to fifth on the Test rankings, England wicketkeeper Matt Prior declared the tourists would only be satisfied with a winning summer.

"I think it's a dangerous thing to go into a series looking to draw. It's certainly not the attitude we've come with. We want to win this series and win it well," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted wicketkeeper Matt Prior, as saying.

England, Prior said, is also eyeing a win in the November 5-7 warm-up clash with Western Australia at the WACA Ground.

"It's a first-class game and we'll take that game very seriously," he said.

"Winning is a habit and the quicker you can get into that habit the better." (ANI)

Kumble, Srinath hope to lead Karnataka cricket administration soon

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 04:22 PM

Bangalore, Nov 3 (ANI): Former India captain Anil Kumble and his teammate fast bowler Javagal Srinath are all set to contest the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) elections for the 2011-2013 term scheduled to be held on November 21.

"Cricketers of our generation must get involved in governing cricket. Our motive is to improve Karnataka cricket and hope to make more international cricketers," Kumble told reporters here.

"We will give our hundred per cent for Karnataka Cricket. Our attempt will be to make Kartnataka Association the number one in India," he added.

Earlier, long-standing KSCA secretary Brijesh Patel said: ""I have now decided not contest the election. With the changing times I firmly believe that fresh energy, new ideas and young feet are good for any institution."

He further said he would do everything to facilitate the election of Kumble and Srinath as the new chief office-bearers for the 2010-13 term.

"We are lucky that we have Kumble, Srinath and others willing to sacrifice their time and energy to take Karnataka cricket forward, " he added. (ANI)

Ashes defeat would end Ponting's reign: Vaughan

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 04:18 PM

London, Nov.3 (ANI): Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan believes Australia captain Ricky Ponting will lose his job if he fails to secure an Ashes victory this winter.

England have arrived Down Under to defend the urn they claimed with a 2-1 success on home soil last year.

Australia have not lost an Ashes series Down Under since 1986/87, but have been struggling in recent months and suffered a 2-0 Test whitewash on their recent tour of India, placing Ponting's leadership under increasing scrutiny.

"If he loses the series he will go," Sky Sports predicted ex-England skipper Vaughan, who came out on top in his captaincy battle with Ponting in the 2005 Ashes.

"He has lost the Ashes twice (2005 and 2009) and hasn't won an Ashes in England either," he added.

"His record in Australia is phenomenal, but he will have to be at his best, both as a captain and as a batsman to put England under pressure," Vaughan said.

Vaughan also feels England will benefit from the absence of a number of Australian Ashes veterans, who have recently retired.

"He (Ponting) doesn't have the X-factor bowlers who can change games. That puts your batsmen under a lot more pressure because they know that you have to get lots more runs to give your bowlers something to bowl at," he said.

"If they'd have got 300 a few years ago, they knew that Warne and McGrath would get them back in the game but now they need 400 plus to really put England under pressure," he added.

Vaughan is optimistic about England's chances but warned they must hit the ground running in the series opener in Brisbane, starting on November 25.

"They can win it," said the 36-year-old, who scored three centuries Down Under in the 2002-03 series. (ANI)

Muralidaran awaits his MCG swansong

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 04:08 PM

Melbourne, Nov. 3 (ANI): As Muthiah Muralidaran nears cricket retirement, Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara said the 38-year-old spinner is relishing his role in the team.

"It's a great luxury to have a spinner like that in our side and it's nice he's agreed to come back and play in the World Cup," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Sangakkara, as saying.

He added: "He's enjoying his cricket - the rest always seems to do him good, now he doesn't have to concentrate on bowling 30 overs in a Test, I think he's a lot happier and a lot more relaxed. We'll see how he goes, as long as he's enjoying it, we're happy to have him with us."

Muralidaran, who has taken the most wickets in Test and one-day international cricket, has already retired from the longest form of the game and is also likely to quit one dayers after next year's World Cup. (ANI)

Hauritz resists Ponting's push for change in bowling style

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 03:38 PM

Sydney, Nov. 3 (ANI): Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting and off-spinner Nathan Hauritz remain on a collision course after the latter declared he would be sticking to his tried-and-true formula leading into the Ashes series this summer.

Ponting wants Hauritz to bowl more like Indian counterpart Harbhajan Singh, but the 29-year-old is supremely confident his game does not require major change to be successful on the world stage.

"I think the most important thing for me is to stick with what I know and what's got me here and what I've done so far at this level," Hauritz told the Herald.

He added: "As soon as I start to change things too much, that's when problems occur. I just need to watch that and keep executing well. I'm extremely confident in what I can do, what I can bring and what I've done over the last however long it's been."

Hauritz received encouragement from selector Greg Chappell, who suggested Australia would play a spinner in the first Test on the traditional seam-friendly wicket at the Gabba.

"I am not convinced four fast bowlers is the way to go; I think the balance of the bowling attack is what you need to be looking at in a Test match," Chappell said.

Hauritz's comments are at odds with the advice Ponting has given him since the spinner returned to the Test arena two years ago after four years in the wilderness.

The captain wants Hauritz to bowl from wider of the crease to improve his chances of hitting footmarks created by left-arm quicks Mitchell Johnson and Doug Bollinger and spinning into the pads of the right-handers.

"If you look at angles Nathan creates and the shape of the ball compared to what Harbhajan does, it's chalk and cheese," Ponting said during last month's series against India.

"From where he was bowling from, it was almost impossible for him to land the ball in the footmarks.

"I think it's important we keep trying to work with him on those things. You have to have more than one string in your bow now in international cricket, particularly if you're an off-spinner."

However, Hauritz and Harbhajan are regarded as different types of finger-spinners.

With his lower arm action, Hauritz rolls his wrist around the ball and relies on curl to deceive batsmen, a tactic more effective when he bowls from closer to the stumps.

Harbhajan, whose arm almost brushes his ear at the point of release, delivers from wider out on the crease, imparts more top spin and troubles batsmen with his extra bounce.

But Hauritz said there were aspects of Harbhajan's game he would be trying to adopt.

"Harbhajan does his own thing. I think Ricky was talking about trying to bowl a different line and work on different things there. That's something I'll probably take out and improve on as well," Hauritz said.

Hauritz bowled only two overs in NSW's romp against Queensland but will use Shield games against Victoria and Tasmania to prepare for the Ashes opener starting on November 25. (ANI)

Kumble, Srinath to contest for top posts in KSCA

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 03:18 PM

Bangalore, Nov 3 (IANS) Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble and ex-speedster Javagal Srinath will contest for the posts of president and secretary of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) in elections slated for Nov 21 here, the association's outgoing secretary and former Test cricketer Brijesh Patel announced Wednesday.

'Kumble and Srinath will contest for the posts of president and general secretary in the KSCA elections for the new term, 2010-13,' Patel told reporters here.

About 4,000 members of the KSCA from diverse backgrounds will participate in the elections for the next four-year term.

'I always believed that cricketers are the right people to administer the game in any association. I had the honour of serving the KSCA as its honorary secretary for the past 12 years,' Patel said a day after he decided to step aside and not to contest the ensuing elections.

Another former Indian skipper and Test cricketer, Rahul Dravid and former Test fast bowler Venkatesh Prasad will also be in the fray for two posts in the 24-member committee.

'I have decided to step aside and support the young distinguished Test cricketers Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Rahul Dravid and others who have pledged to take the KSCA forward in the coming challenging years,' Patel said.

Endorsing Patel's views, Kumble said it was important for cricketers to be a part of an association committed to the cause and development of the game in the state and the country.

'I think it is the best time for me, Javagal, Rahul and Venkatesh Prasad to get involved with the administration of the game at this critical juncture for Karnataka cricket and a great responsibility will be bestowed upon us to deliver the goods,' Kumble said.

Prior calls on England to focus on their game in Australia

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 02:22 PM

Perth (Australia), Nov.3 (ANI): Wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior has said that England would focus on building intensity through its skills, bowling and fielding.

"I don't think we need to say too much or get into a war of words with anyone," Sky Sports quoted Prior, as saying ahead of the Ashes series.

The Sussex wicketkeeper, however, accepted that each member of England's squad in Australia is free to deal with any pointed remarks that come their way in the middle as they see fit.

But he stressed there was no collective desire for verbal fireworks on the part of the tourists.

"It's a very individual thing, hugely so, certainly from a batsman's point of view. Everyone has a different way of responding to it. That's for you to work out yourself," Prior said. (ANI)

Ponting offers hope to Queensland all-rounder Hopes

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 01:52 PM

Melbourne, Nov.3 (ANI): Dropped Australian all-rounder James Hopes has received support from captain Rick Ponting ahead of next February's cricket World Cup.

"James has been a very valuable member of our one-day setup for the last three or four years now," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Ponting, as saying.

"The fact he's not in this squad at the moment gives him a chance to go back to Queensland and get some really good form under his belt again.

We're looking at giving a few players a bit of experience and finding out a bit about them before the World Cup," Ponting added.

"We only have a few games to look at some of these players, you need a lot of depth and you need a lot of guys to have exposure at international level before you can go into a World Cup. That's a bit of the thinking behind some of the selections at the moment," Ponting said.

Queensland coach Trevor Barsby said he would be "disgusted" if the axing marked the end of Hopes' international career and added the omission left him "dumbfounded". (ANI)

''Guangzhou Asiad to have largest-ever number of dope tests''

Wed, Nov 03 10 01:38 PM

Beijing Nov 3 (PTI) The 16th Asian Games in the city of Guangzhou this month will have the "largest-ever number" of dope tests in the event''s history, a top anti-doping official here has claimed. All the urine samples for the Asian Games will be sent to CHINADA''s laboratory in Beijing, which carried out the doping tests for the 2008 Olympic Games. The access system requires all athletes training for the Asian Games to attend anti-doping lectures and pass a written examination. .

Gilani to press for PCB chief Ijaz Butt's dismissal with Zardari

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 01:22 PM

Islamabad, Nov 3(ANI): Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani has said that he would discuss the deteriorating situation of cricket in the country with President and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) patron Asif Ali Zardari.

The government is reportedly under tremendous pressure to sack PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt, who is being held responsible for bringing the national team into disrepute.

"I will convey to President Zardari regarding the demand of dismissal of PCB chairman Ijaz Butt," the Daily Times quoted Gilani, as saying.

Earlier, it was reported that Butt had been told by higher authorities to appoint new board officials or forget about getting an extension to his two-year term.

"Ijaz has been told he can continue till the World Cup, but only with a new team and the present set of officials should be changed. The orders have come from the top including the President who is also chief patron of the board and the Prime Minister," a source had said.

The source had also said that former captain Javed Miandad was expected to get more authority in the new set-up.

"Until now Ijaz has kept Miandad sidelined by making him director cricket, but virtually giving him no authority or say in cricket matters at all. But the higher authorities now want Ijaz to bring about changes and try to put Pakistan cricket back on the right track," he added.

Butt was appointed as PCB chief by Zardari in October 2008. (ANI)

Vettori backs UDRS but system won't be used during India tour

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 01:12 PM

Ahmedabad, Nov.3 (ANI): New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori has thrown his weight behind the use of the Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS), insisting "it is good for the game".

The system, however, will not be used in the upcoming three-match Test series in India after the Board of Control for Cricket in India and some key Indian players, including skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, expressed doubt about its efficiency.

Vettori believes the UDRS represents the way forward.

"I like the referral system. There are still a few hiccups with the technology, but I think it is good for the game if it is used consistently," Sky Sports quoted Vettori, as saying.

Black Caps manager Mark Greatbatch echoed Vettori's thoughts and feels the system would help the game. (ANI)

McGrath tips Australia to win Ashes series 5-0

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 12:58 PM

Sydney, Nov.3 (ANI): Fast-bowling great Glenn McGrath has again tipped Australia to regain the Ashes with a 5-0 whitewash agaisnt England.

"I couldn't have more faith in the boys. We had a Twenty20 loss to Sri Lanka on Sunday, but those matches are unpredictable. I think we'll bounce back and win all Tests. They'll be close, but I'm tipping a 5-0 whitewash," The Age and the Herald Sun quoted McGrath, as saying.

McGrath famously tipped a 5-0 sweep before the 2005 Ashes series, which England won 2-1.

McGrath said he was unlikely to be at the Boxing Day Test, and would spend time with his children and fiancee Sara Leonardi.

The McGrath Foundation's High Tea at the 'G will be hosted by Lee Furlong on December 27.

"The Sydney Test match is a big one for us too, so I'll be there and we'll also hopefully be cheering on a good win," McGrath said. (ANI)

'Spot-fixing' scam diverted attention from possible 'home games': Butt

Published>Wed, Nov 03 10 12:38 PM

Lahore, Nov 3(ANI): Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Ijaz Butt has said that the tour of England 'spot-fixing' scam has ruined the country's chances of holding 'home games'.

Leading cricket teams have refused to visit Pakistan following last year's terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka team bus, which has also forced Pakistan to hold its 'home' series against Australia and England in England.

"The ICC Task Force was well on its way to bringing a MCC XI team to Pakistan in which two players of each cricket board were to be included. Moreover, Zimbabwe were also interested in sending their national team to Pakistan," the News quoted Butt, as saying.

"The current spot-fixing scam has diverted attention to other issues as work of inviting some teams to Pakistan could not be materialized," he added.

Butt also said that at the moment there is no space left in the cricket calendar to accommodate a visiting team.

"There is no appropriate time left for such activities due to hectic schedule of Pakistan till the World Cup," Butt said.

The ICC's Pakistan Task Force Chairman, Giles Clarke, had called for Pakistan to resume hosting international matches back in August.

He had suggested that an ICC World XI would tour the country "in due course".

In the last two years, Pakistan 'home' games have also been staged in the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand.

Pakistan, which was due to co-host the 2011 World Cup, was also stripped of its matches following the attack on the Sri Lankan team.

Pakistan was supposed to hold 14 matches, including one semi-final. Eight of Pakistan's matches have been awarded to India, four to Sri Lanka and two to Bangladesh. (ANI)
