British sprinter Mark Cavendish abandoned the Tour of Catalunya during Friday's fifth stage after coming down with flu three days after his first win of the season.

The most prolific winner of 2009, with 24 victories, quit 80 kilometres into the 181.2-km stage won by Italian Davide Malacarne.

"I've been feeling ill for the last couple of days and today was worse," Cavendish told Reuters.

HTC-Columbia team manager Brian Holm added the illness was nothing to worry about.

"It's nothing too serious, he said he was feeling bad the last few days and it's got worse today," he said.

"I told him he should stop if he was feeling so bad, he wasn't happy but it was the right thing to do."

Cavendish's start to racing in 2010 was delayed by two weeks after a severe tooth infection wrecked his early season training programme.

On Tuesday he ended a six-month wait for a win by taking an emphatic bunch sprint victory in stage two of the Tour of Catalunya.

The Tour of Catalunya finishes on Sunday in Montmelo. Spain's Joaquim Rodriguez is the overall leader.

Yusuf Pathan powers Rajasthan Royals to victory against Deccan Chargers

Published>Sat, Mar 27 10 12:59 AM

Ahmedabad, March 27 (IANS) Phenomenal Yusuf Pathan went on a six-hitting spree as Rajasthan Royals crushed defending champions Deccan Chargers by eight wickets and tore apart the form book of Indian Premier League here Friday.

Yusuf struck eight towering sixes in his unbeaten 73 runs off 34 balls that saw Royals chase down the victory target of 149 runs in just 15.4 overs. It was Royals opener Micahel Lumb, who gave an explosive start to their chase with a 32-ball 45 that included seven fours, four smashed in an RP Singh over.

With Lumb on fire, Royals blasted 55 runs off 21 balls before losing their first wicket in Naman Ojha (14).

From there on it turned out to be a one-man show as Pathan whacked the bowlers all over the park sending the ball soaring over the stadium effortlessly amid huge roar from the home crowd. Deccan Chargers skipper Adam Gichrist ran out of ideas with Yusuf in such murderous mood.

When Yusuf hit the winning six off Rahul Sharma, it was his 19th six of the tournament in six matches, the most in this year's IPL. Bangalore's Robin Uthappa and Super Kings' Mathew Hayden are way behind at second and third spot with 12 and 11 sixes.

Pathan, who had struck nine sixes en route IPL's fastest 100 off 37 balls in their opening match against Mumbai Indians, took his runs tally to 242 at a strike rate of 181.95, the best by any batsmen so far.

Rajasthan Royals, who lost their first three matches, bounced back with three wins in a trot that saw them jump to third place with six points. Deccan Chargers lost their second match of the tournament and are placed behind Royals at fourth position.

The Royals suddenly looks a formidable outfit. They had a dream run in the inaugural IPL in 2007 when they went on to become the champions without any star power in their ranks.

Charismatic Shane Warne had inspired the team and plotted downfall of their opponents.

Tonight Warne again was back to his best, bowling with guile and spot on with his strategies.

With Warne leading the attack, the Royals bowled intelligently to restrict a strong batting side like Deccan Chargers to 148 for nine.

Warne looked in ominous form as he had dangerous Herschelle Gibbs (25) stumped with a beautiful flighted delivery. Warne showed the way conceding only 15 runs in four overs and one again his bowling changes did the trick.

Express fast Shaun Tait was the pick of the bowler, getting three wickets for just 22 runs. Sumit Narwal claimed two wickets.

Rohit Sharma, the top scorer for Chargers with 49 runs, hit three sixes and two fours before falling to Tait.

Abhishek Jhunjunwala was outstanding in the field as he effected two run outs.

Revived Strauss ready to take over reins from Cook

England's captain Andrew Strauss (L) with Alastair Cook after South Africa defeated England in the...

Published>Sat, Mar 27 10 12:49 AM

England captain Andrew Strauss made no apology for enjoying two months of relaxation while his team toiled in the heat of Bangladesh on Friday as he looked forward to getting back out into the middle.

Strauss was spared the three one-day internationals and two tests in Bangladesh to recharge his batteries for a busy year ahead which includes the Twenty20 World Cup, a home series against Pakistan and culminates with the Ashes in Australia.

"I wasn't getting up at three-o-clock in the morning to watch every ball but I was getting up quite early," Strauss told reporters after helping with renovation work at Old Millhillians Cricket Club in London as part of an ECB grassroots scheme.

"It was strange watching them go out but I knew it was in safe hands with Cookie (Alastair Cook) leading the side and (coach) Andy Flower being there and I had every confidence they would get the results they needed, which they did.

"Of course when the tour is going on you think it would be nice to be out there with the lads. But I genuinely believe that the benefits of me taking time off will be seen later on in the summer and into the winter."

Strauss's absence raised some eyebrows but he said he was happy with the decision.

"I can understand people (questioning the decision)," he said. "Their argument is that as the captain you should be there all the time. But I think we have to look at ways of making the most of the players we have got and getting the best out of players when we need them to be playing their best.

"We've got the Ashes which is huge. We need to be peaking there and have to look at how best to do that.

"It wasn't a unilateral decision where I said I don't want to go to Bangladesh. This was something we talked about for a number of months with Andy Flower and (ECB managing director) Hugh Morris. When you do something different there will always be criticism.

"I've had a solid break for two months and feel refreshed. Now I can't wait to get out there and play."

Strauss, who has made a good start to his career as England captain after taking over from Kevin Pietersen, was full of praise for Essex batsman Cook's leadership of the team in his absence. England won all three ODIs in Bangladesh and both tests against stubborn opponents.

"Before he went I said to him you must do it your way to get a real benefit from it," Strauss said. "You have to learn what it's like to captain the team and I felt he did that and by the sounds of things it went well.

"I had the odd text message with him and I congratulated him when he did well but it was his show and Andy Flower's show and they should take great credit.

"Alastair led by example and I knew he had the respect of the players anyway. It was a steep learning curve for him but I think he would have benefitted from it immensely."

Strauss will pick up the reins again with England in good shape but he said there was plenty of hard work to come.

"I've got some thoughts about how we can improve things over the next nine months and now is the time to start implementing them," he said.

2012 stadium rising as fast as questions on its future

The Olympic Stadium, being constructed for the London 2012 Olympic games, is pictured in east...

Published>Sat, Mar 27 10 12:13 AM

London 2012 officials are delighted with progress on building the Olympic Stadium, but the big question surrounding the centrepiece remains how quickly and how much of it they will tear down once the Games are over.

The velodrome's sweeping roof is on, the diving pool in the aquatics centre is finished and full of water while the athletes' village looks like a small town of high-rise blocks.

The east-London venue is still a vast building site with more than 10,000 workers and hundreds of construction vehicles scuttling this way and that. It will, however, look very different when two million wetland plants, currently under incubation in the Norfolk countryside, are introduced to the landscaping and when the thousands of young trees are bedded in.

Rising at its heart though, the 80,000-capacity Olympic Stadium is already the dominant feature.

The 14 huge floodlight towers are now in place and work will start on the installation of the roof next month. The structure is due for completion by the end of the year with only the running track and grass infield to be laid in 2011.

Standing in the middle it already feels more compact than many running-track venues and figures released by the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) state that fans in some stands would be nearer to the centre circle than at Wembley Stadium.

WHAT NEXT?

For all the excitement about what will happen during July-August 2012 when the eyes of the world will be on the 400 metres of athletics track, the question on everyone's lips is "then what?"

It is hardly a new line of enquiry as the stadium's legacy has been under discussion since even before London was awarded the Games five years ago but West Ham United's recent announcement that they would be interested in moving in post-Games has returned it to the fore.

The presence of the running track -- absolutely sacrosanct to the organising committee (LOCOG) and the International Olympic Committee -- has been something of a deterrent to a soccer club moving their home to Stratford.

West Ham had previously ruled it out but new owners David Sullivan and David Gold this week announced a potential joint-bid with the local Newham Council in which they could move the three miles from Upton Park.

The construction of the stadium is such that it can remain as an 80,000-seater, which is the least-likely option. It could be reduced to 55,000 -- the optimum choice for a soccer club -- or be trimmed to 25,000 which will be the most viable for athletics and occasional concerts.

Perhaps numbed by going through the options a hundred times, Paul Deighton, LOCOG'S chief executive officer, did not have the appearance of a man stressed to make a decision when he surveyed his muddy domain on Friday.

"There is no pressure, the mixed-use option remains attractive but it's not essential," he told Reuters. "The compact nature of the stadium certainly lends itself to use by a football club, much more so than in some of the large European stadiums with running tracks, but we are not necessarily chasing that option and all options remain under discussion."

Deighton's organisation are charged with leaving the legacy of a world class stadium and are less concerned about what happens with it afterwards, especially in the short term.

He said that the steel structure was essentially a "Meccano set" that could be reduced to a 25,000-seater after the Games and even years later easily built back up to a higher capacity.

With the country's current top athletics venue, Crystal Palace, filling its maximum capacity of around 20,000 only once or twice a year at best, the idea of having another enormous athletics stadium sitting unused for the majority of the year does not sit well with many observers.

Armstrong v Contador? Make it Evans v Contador

Alberto Contador of Spain walks on the eve of the International cycling Criterium in Porto...

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 11:49 PM

Alberto Contador is not even regarding Lance Armstrong as one of his rivals for this weekend's Criterium International in Corsica.

The pair were not supposed to face each other before the Tour de France but twice Tour winner Contador changed his mind after a commanding win in Paris-Nice earlier this month.

The Spaniard decided to drop the Tour of Catalunya and travel to Corsica for the two-day Criterium International, where he will challenge seven-times Tour winner Armstrong, who has not been at his best since the beginning of the season.

"There is no message to Armstrong," a relaxed Contador told reporters at his hotel facing the Porto Vecchio bay.

"I just came here because it is better for my preparation ahead of the Tour. I got very good results from my previous race, Paris-Nice was very tough and I did not want to race seven days in Catalunya.

"The Criterium is only a two-day race and it suits my characteristics," he added, naming world champion Cadel Evans as his top rival in Corsica.

"Several riders are in excellent condition. I don't like to name names because I might forget one of them. However, one who is very strong is Cadel Evans," said Contador before posing for photos in the hotel's garden.

It seems it is not all about Armstrong v Contador after all.

"Several riders are in better shape than Lance, right now," Contador explained.

LONG AND WINDY

Australian Evans, staying in the same hotel as Contador, had yet to fully focus on the race.

He went for a smooth training ride in the morning wearing his world champion rainbow jersey before heading back to the hotel to share a meal with his BMC team mates.

"It's incredible, it (the rainbow jersey) gets recognised everywhere you go," he told Reuters. "I'm getting used to it, I'm not getting sick of it."

After eating pasta, mashed carrots and a tuna salad, a cheerful Evans left his seat and went to congratulate the chef.

It will be back to business on Saturday when the peloton start the first of three stages, a 175.5-km trek from Porto Vecchio to the Col de l'Ospedale, a 14.2-km climb at an average gradient of 6.2 percent that should perfectly suit Contador.

Armstrong, who landed in Corsica in a private jet in the morning wearing casual jeans and sunglasses, rushed into a car driven by his RadioShack manager and long-time mentor Johan Bruyneel.

He then played hide and seek with photographers before going on his bike to check Saturday's climb.

"Off the plane and went for a spin here in Corsica," he wrote on Twitter.

"Checked out the final climb from tomorrow. Col de l'Ospedale. Tough one. Long & windy."

Broad needs reminder on respecting umpires, says Fraser

England's Stuart Broad bowls against Bangladesh during their first day of second test cricket match...

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 11:09 PM

England fast bowler Stuart Broad needs a quiet word in his ear reminding him to respect umpires, former test paceman Angus Fraser said on Friday.

Broad was forced to apologise to Australian umpire Rod Tucker after celebrating an lbw without turning around to see the offical's decision during the first test in Bangladesh -- not the first time his on-field attitude has caused concern.

"I think Stuart has got to rein himself in a little bit," Fraser, who took 177 wickets for England during a 10-year international career, told Reuters at the launch of an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) scheme to renovate local clubs.

"There were a few things in South Africa too which you look at from the outside and think ughhh? He has to just get on with it. But it's all part of the learning process.

"It's not easy, you are out there playing a high emotion game and sometimes you do things that you may regret later on. I think maybe he needs to be taken slightly to one side by the captain and told quietly look this is the way we do it."

Broad, whose father Chris is a former England opener and now an ICC match referee, is a fiesty character on the field but his demeanour when decisions go against him has irked many inthe game including former captain Michael Vaughan.

He was involved in controversy in South Africa and in another incident against Bangladesh he petulantly appealed to the umpire after bowling Mushfiqur Rahim as England chased victory. The previous ball he had a loud lbw appeal turned down.

Current captain Andrew Strauss said he would prefer Broad to channel all his efforts into taking more wickets.

"It's hard for me to comment as I wasn't there (in Bangladesh) but it's something he needs to be aware of," Strauss told reporters.

"He didn't have any complaint from the match referee but it's not a direction that you really want to go down because it could end up deflecting you from what you're good at and doing your job properly.

"He certainly has to be a little bit careful but I think he understands the situation and I'm sure he'll rein himself in."

Fraser, who played when the umpire's decision was final, said player dissent could further erode their authority now that the referral system is becoming widespread.

"Umpires are inevitably being undermined and they are not all powerful any more with players having the chance to challenge them," he said. "That was never there in the past.

"I'm not a huge fan of referrals, but I must say it worked quite well over there (in South Africa). It's not where we are at now that worries me it's where we might be at in a few years time when every decision is being examined.

"We could end up being down to seven overs an hour with 20 minutes of the hour being spent looking at television replays in a booth up in the stand which is not what we want."

Kjeldsen trying to put money woes behind him

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 10:09 PM

Dane Soren Kjeldsen has 'sorted his head out' and is back playing at close to his best after losing money when a former manager went out of business.

Kjeldsen, the defending champion and overnight leader at the Andalucia Open, admitted the incident, which came to light in December, had affected his game badly.

The 34-year-old from Aalborg, who lives in Ascot, England, would not reveal the full extent of his losses but said: "It is a lot of money, thousands."

However, Kjeldsen has tried to put the incident out of his mind and get on with trying to win tournaments again.

His decision has paid off for now, claiming a share of the overnight lead at the Malaga Parador course.

"I had my manager for six years but on December 1 I decided I wanted to change and he was fine with that. But when I said I needed to start talking about money I discovered that he didn't have two or three years of my sponsorship money.

"I brought a civil action against him and took him to court but with no success. His company has gone bust and he owes a lot of money to a lot of people. It isn't a police matter yet but it could be.

"We have a saying in Danish that 'you can't take hair off a guy who's bald'. I have to accept I'm not going to get anything.

"It did affect me but my coach Pete Cowen told me I had to sort my head out. I came here to Spain determined I was going to do that."

Kjeldsen has now joined Swede Johan Elliot's Sportyard management group which has 2008 European number one Robert Karlsson among its stable.

Tough for Chettri to break into Kansas Wizards sqaud

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 09:09 PM

New Delhi, March 26 (IANS) It is not yet clear whether India's forward Sunil Chettri will get to play in the Major League Soccer (MLS) as all clubs are allowed only eight international slots while the Delhi player is the 10th recruit of Kansas City Wizards this season.

'Right now we have 10 international players, but I don't foresee that being the case in a week or so. Nobody has to go right now because he (Chettri) is not on the roster until his paperwork gets approved,' Wizard's manager Peter Vermes was quoted as saying by Kansas City.com.

Vermes said Chettri will not be available to play in the Kansas City Wizards opener versus DC United at home Saturday.

According to MLS rules, a team's roster shall not exceed 24 total players. All 24 players are eligible for selection as part of the game-day squad during the regular season and play-offs.

Each team is allotted eight international slots, with the exception of Toronto FC, which is allotted 13 international slots, five of which may be used on domestic US players.

Chettri's agent Yogesh Joshee said he was unaware of the rule.

'I can't comment on this rule. The club officials must be aware of this rule and that is the reason why they have signed him,' Joshee told IANS.

The deal is tentative, pending Chhetri's visa application and his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) approval. The Wizards still need to make room for him on their roster.

Chettri becomes the eighth Asian and the first Indian to play in MLS. He will also be the first Asian to play for the Kansas City Wizards and the third Indian, after Mohammad Salim and Bhaichung Bhutia, to ply his trade outside of India.

Currently, MLS has representatives from over 55 different countries playing for the 16 clubs.

World class field for Badminton Asia Championships

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 08:39 PM

New Delhi, March 26 (IANS) A world class field will be on show at the Yonex-Sunrise Badminton Asia Championships here April 12-18. Hosts India will have a strong presence with Saina Nehwal leading the charge.

Three times world champion and Beijing Olympic gold medallist Lin Dan of China and Athens Olympic champion Taufiq Hidayat of Indonesia will be among eight top 20 players who have confirmed their participation.

Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, who won the All England title earlier this month and shares a formidable rivalry with Dan, would be missing from action.

In the women's draw, four top 10 players are in the fray. China's Lu Lan, the defending world champion, Hong Kong's Zhou Mi, bronze medal winner in 2004 Olympics, Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti, bronze medallist of Beijing Olympics, are some of the well-known women's players who will compete here.

India's Saina Nehwal, currently ranked sixth, will be the favourite. India have an equally strong contingent in the men's section featuring Chetan Anand, Arvind Bhat and Anup Sridhar, Parupalli Kashyap and Guru Sai Dutt.

'V. Diju and Jwala Gutta are among the top pairs in the world in mixed doubles and they would be looking forward to this event.'

'In the men's section, there is a lot of hope. Chetan Anand has been consistent in the last few years. Anup Sridhar, P. Kashyap and Arvind Bhat are in good shape. Their performance was good in the Thomas Cup. A lot will depend on the draw though,' Dinesh said.

Good coaches need of the hour: J&K DGP

Jammu, Mar 26 (PTI) Sports is an integral part of the department but specialised coaches is the need of the hour for the players to come up with more improved performance at the national and international levels, said state Director General of Police (DGP) Kuldeep Khoda. Praising the players of the department who have won laurels in various national and international competitions, Khoda said Jammu and Kashmir Police has been organising sporting activities at regular junctures besides hosting several national events to promote sports in the state. "We need a number of good coaches for different disciplines so that talented youths can prove their worth at higher levels and also make the department proud by their achievements," the DGP said here last evening ahead of the six-day Inter-Zone Sports Meet commencing tomorrow. "The J&K Police has given out of turn promotions to various players from time to time for their outstanding performances at national and international level," Khoda said. During the six-day long meet, a total of 816 athletes, including 612 men and 204 women, would vie for top honours in various disciplines such as basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, handball, tug-of-war, athletics, boxing, wrestling, weightlifting, archery, shooting, hockey, football, badminton, lawn tennis and table tennis.

Good coaches need of the hour: J&K DGP

Published Fri, Mar 26 10 07:29 PM

Mohun Bagan keen to bounce back

Published Fri, Mar 26 10 07:23 PM

Kolkata, Mar 26 (PTI) Down after their shocking loss to last-placed Sporting Clube de Goa, Mohun Bagan will look to bounce back and improve their position when they face Shillong Lajong in their round 18 I-League encounter at Yuba Bharati Krirangan here tomorrow. Mohun Bagan may miss the services of midfielder Rakesh Masih in the match, even as their coach Satyajit Chatterjee will get a full strength squad to pick from. Masih has sustained a shoulder injury that might see him out of the match with Sheikh Azim taking his place. After becoming the first club in the ongoing I-League to lose to Sporting Clube de Goa, Mohun Bagan is now placed fifth, seven points shy of leaders Dempo (32 points) on the standings. Winless from last three matches, Mohun Bagan however will be a strong opposition at home against the upbeat Shillong club, who in their last match defeated Pune FC. With the foreigner duo of Jose Ramirez Barreto and Edeh Chidi manning the forward line-up, it remains to be seen how Lajong''s defence copes the challenge. Having come back from an injury, Chidi is in his best of form of late as the Nigerian was lackluster in Mohun Bagan''s loss to bottom-placed Sporting Clube de Goa. But his Brazilian striking partner disagreed and stood by the Nigerian and said: "He is coming back from injury but he is still very good." .

Three more charged in Turkish match-fixing probe

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 07:09 PM

Turkish authorities have charged three further suspects in connection with alleged match-fixing, state-run news agency Anatolian reported.

Sariyer District Court in Istanbul confirmed charges, Anatolian said, against Recep Ozturk, a goalkeeper with second-tier Konyaspor, Temel Eyupoglu, chairman of third-tier Tepecikspor, and businessman Ali Riza Gultekin.

Eight more people were being questioned on Friday, and further arrests could follow, authorities said.

Former international defender Fatih Akyel, part of the Turkey team which came third at the 2002 World Cup, was arrested on Thursday and remanded in custody on charges of fraud and gang membership, his lawyer said.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) confirmed this week it had asked Istanbul prosecutors last August to investigate match fixing. The scale of the investigation and detentions has shocked the country.

Police on Wednesday detained 46 people in connection with the probe. They have since freed five of them including Arif Erdem, a deputy trainer of top-division Istanbul club Buyuksehir Belediyespor and Taner Gulleri, a striker with the club.

Newspaper Haberturk on Friday published a list of 59 games dating from 2007 to 2009, including 10 top league matches it said were under investigation for manipulation.

The TFF declined to comment.

Turkey is bidding to stage the European Championship in 2016 and Hakan Unsal, who played with Akyel at the 2002 World Cup, said the arrests were a blow to the perception of Turkish football.

"I'm very sorry that my former team mates are in such a situation... I'm sure the investigation will prove their innocence. This is a blow to the perception of the football community," he told broadcaster NTV.

Russia's Medvedev orders Vancouver Olympics spending probe

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 06:49 PM

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced a probe on Friday into the ineffective use of funds to prepare athletes for the Vancouver Olympics, the country's worst ever Winter Games.

Traditionally a Winter Olympic powerhouse, Russia finished 11th in the medals table, winning three gold medals to Canada's 14.

"The problem is not so much a lack of resources as their ineffective use," Medvedev told a gathering of top sporting officials in the resort town of Sochi, where Russia will host the next Winter Olympics in 2014.

"The Audit Chamber on my order is already checking the use of budget funds aimed at preparing for the Vancouver Olympics," he said.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the country's most powerful politician, complained earlier this month that Russia spent five times as much money on last month's Winter Games as on the 2006 Turin Olympics, where Russia secured eight golds.

Medvedev has previously called on top sports officials to resign or face dismissal over the Vancouver showing. Russian Olympic Committee chief Leonid Tygachyov, Deputy Sports Minister Gennady Alyoshin and cross-country skiing federation president Vladimir Loginov have since quit.

Medvedev used Friday's meeting to criticise Russia's own officials on international sports bodies who he said were not representing the country effectively.

He also hinted that doping controls were being used to target the country's athletes after a spate of positive test results for banned substances, which has tarnished Russia's image.

"We need to break this image and do all that is necessary. But doping scandals to a certain extent are a way to settle scores and are a part of global sporting competition.

"So we need to be able to strike back and be able to defend ourselves without turning the other cheek," he said.

Brief news ahead of the Premier League weekend fixtures (times GMT):

* Leaders Manchester United travel to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday (1730) with in-form striker Wayne Rooney and midfielders Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs all fit.

Long term absentees John O'Shea and Owen Hargreaves are both back in first team training but are both still short of fitness.

"Going to Bolton is a battle, it's always been that way," United manager Alex Ferguson told the club website (www.manutd.com).

"I think there will be some points dropped by the three (top) teams between now and the end of the season. We just have to make sure we don't drop as many as Arsenal and Chelsea."

Bolton centre-back Gary Cahill is in contention for a recall having returned to fitness following a blood clot in his arm.

* Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is fit for Saturday's clash with Aston Villa (1500) despite limping off in the midweek win over Portsmouth.

The Ivory Coast striker is on 30 goals for the season for the second time in his Blues career. Defender Ricardo Carvalho is out with an ankle injury.

* Third-placed Arsenal travel to Birmingham City on Saturday (1500) without defensive duo William Gallas (injured) and Thomas Vermaelen (suspended), but striker Nicklas Bendtner is fit.

French centre-back Gallas has been sidelined with a calf injury since Feb. 10 but is finally set to resume full training.

"He is back from his rehabilitation and is back in full training I believe Friday, Saturday or Sunday," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger told the club website (www.arsenal.com).

8th F1 title still possible: Schumacher

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 05:49 PM

Seven time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has said that he is aiming for his eighth title this season.

"My expectation was to fight for the championship and I still think that this is possible," The Daily Telegraph quoted Schumacher, as saying.

"Can we win the championship this year? That is a tough question. It is a long year and I have been in much worse circumstances at the beginning of the year and still taken a championship. I am not feeling pessimistic at all. I know it is hard work and we will make a big effort," he added.

Schumacher, who finished sixth in the season opener of F1 in Bahrain last Sunday, reckons that he will be stronger in Australia, where he has won four times.

He is also pushing the technical team, led by his former Ferrari chief Ross Brawn, to deliver a car that responds to his needs and driving style.

"I feel excited. It is a great challenge to work again and to develop projects and events. That is always where there is excitement. You never stand still, it is always an ongoing process. This is what I want to do, but I have to be motivated," Schumacher said.

Vinay Kumar lone new face in T20 World Cup squad

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 05:19 PM

Mumbai, March 26 (IANS) Bangalore pacer Ranganath Vinay Kumar was the only new face in the 15-member in the India squad for the Twenty20 World Cup in the Caribbean in April-May, but there is no place for Delhi's fast bowler Ishant Sharma and batsman Virat Kohli.

Chief selector K. Srikkanth and his colleagues decided to include injured Gautam Gambhir and Ashish Nehra. Gambhir strained his hamstring, playing for Delhi Daredevils against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, while his teammate Nehra could not play a single IPL match due to a rib cage injury. Both Nehra and Gambhir went to Sri Lanka for an ayurvedic treatment.

'We have selected the best team. We are also happy that everybody is in fine form. I am confident about the team that we have selected. We can do well and we do have a powerful batting line-up,' said Srikkanth.

Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, who last played for India during the 2008 Asia Cup in Pakistan, also found a place in the side ahead of left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who played in the second edition of the Twenty20 World Cup in England last year.

Young Karnataka batsman Manish Pandey, who has been in a great form, failed to impress the selectors, who preferred the experience of middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma who can also his turn his arm over to bowl off-spin.

The selectors also could not fit in the in-form Karnataka batsman Robin Uthappa as they preferred to stick with wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik in view of skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni's record of injuries on recent tours.

Dhoni attended the selection committee meeting.

Vinay Kumar was finally rewarded for his consistent performance in domestic cricket, especially with Bangalore Royal Challengers. Vinay Kumar picked up 46 wickets in the Ranji trophy and is the joint second highest wicket-taker in the IPL with eight scalps.

India are in Group C with Afghanistan and South Africa. India open their campaign against Afghanistan, May 1, at St. Lucia. India, 2007 champions, made an early exit from the last year's Twenty20 World cup in England.

The women's selection committee also announced a 15-member squad for the Women's Twenty20 World Cup that would also be held in the West Indies from April 30 to May 16.

Men's Team: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Virender Sehwag (vice-captain), Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, R. Vinay Kumar, Dinesh Karthik, Rohit Sharma and Piyush Chawla

Women's team: Jhulan Goswami (captain), Mithali Raj, Poonam Raut, Sulakshana Naik, Anagha Deshpande, Rumeli Dhar, Amita Sharma, Harmanpreet Kaur, Reema Malhotra, Diana David, Gouhar Sultana, Sonia Dabir, Priyanka Roy and Anjum Chopra

The room was abuzz with activity. Journalists uncomfortably shifted in their chairs, murmuring among themselves. Rivals from Star, Zee and CNN were all caught in hectic discussions. If what was being rumoured was indeed true, it would change the landscape of India's favourite sport for ever.

The murmur suddenly reached a crescendo, and then fell to absolute silence. He'd come. Lalit Modi. Some say the most powerful person in the ICC, the one who really calls all the shots. He wasn't a household name like say, Jagmohan Dalmiya used to be - but all that was set to change now.

Modi took his seat, and quietly surveyed an army of journalists and cricket enthusiasts in front of him. He spotted a few legends of the game as well, some not from India. He knew very well the implications of what he was about to say - it would draw flak from the pundits, shock among the masses and panic amongst advertisers. He knew it all. But 'Lalz' was a brave man. Despite a voice frequency which could make a tuning fork move on its own, he knew how to get into dangerous and controversial things. And pull them off. After all, he was the kingpin in his school Tazo mafia. He smiled briefly and then let out a puff of air. It was time.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thank you all for coming", he delivered. "Our great sport, started by our British and Australian ancestors in the 1870s, has come a long way. From Grace to Bradman to Sobers to Lillee to Richards to Tendulkar to Murali. It's been a journey. But change has been constant, my friends. And we must endeavour to move with the times."

The crowd took in a small gasp. They knew what was coming.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my honour, privilege and deep responsibility to unveil before you, The World Test Cricket Championship."

The crowd stared open-mouth. They couldn't believe this was happening. The journalists took it all down, not willing to miss a moment. This would shape the future of cricket as they knew it.

"The top eight T20 teams in the world will now battle it out over a period of ten years to decide the World Test champion. But, I sense unrest among a lot of you, and would like to assure you that this will have no impact on the current T20 or ODI schedules. The yearly World Cup of each will continue to happen, we will continue to have the IPL, but we must embrace this new format, which is making waves around the world. This IS the future of cricket."

There were questions galore, but no one knew where to start. Lalit saw this all and continued to smile. Perhaps now he could continue, he had prepared a long speech for all eventualities.

"See, over 130 years ago, when England and Australia played that first T20 match, when Charles Bannerman scored the now legendary 57 not out off 33 balls, little did we know how cricket would evolve. Many things have come and gone since. The scoops and reverse sweeps have made way for cover drives and square cuts. Those of you who watch grainy images of Don Bradman's epic 166*, the highest T20 score to date, will attest to that fact. The rebellious Kerry Packer, in a bid to increase the amount of advertiser revenue possible, staged 'longer' matches, which he called One Day cricket. And to the horror of many people, he started using white uniforms regularly to distinguish his so-called one-day league! But today, it is accepted practice to wear whites and no one really raises a fuss."

"Last year, after a complaint by some of the counties in Papua New Guinea complained they were not getting enough matches, the PNGCB came across a novel idea - a three-day match of 50 overs per day, with two innings. Many of you remember that. I remember there being much criticism in the press? your press? about the same. How the world's top T20 country could do something that could kill the game! But the floodgates opened! People loved this new method. Cricketers loved it too! They said it didn't have the frenetic pace of T20, and could focus on constructing an innings."

"RUBBISH!", screamed a legendary Malaysian T20 cricketer, part of the 1977 World Cup winning squad. "Constructing an innings? What nonsense! It's all this new generation and their lazy attitude! In our days, we'd just get out there in our coloured outfits and smash the blooming ball around! The worst kids would be given the ball, to teach 'em a lesson. Why, we used to thwack sixes the height of the Petronas' in those days..."

Modi sighed. He expected backlash. "I agree to your point, sir. But this is not 1977 anymore. Things have changed. There are more youngsters interested in building their technique and defence. And what's more, bowlers are starting to feel marginalized, and have got better. In fact", and he knew this statement was going to bring the house down, "I have made it mandatory for each team to select bowlers on merit."

The din took all of five minutes to subside. "Defence?!" screamed a pundit. "What new-fangled rot!" He left the room in disgust.

A journalist, known for his statistical bent of mind, took the audience mic. "Sir, this is very brave. But, everything's going to change. What will a good innings be now? A batsman has virtually unlimited time to score runs. Will we be seeing scores of 200s and 300s made by a single batsman?"

"It could very well happen. The idea is to give a batsman time to construct an innings and the bowler, being a vital part of the game, will aim to outfox the batsman proactively rather than hoping for an error. We're hoping that someone will be able to better Shane Warne's 2/4."

Some of the audience couldn't fathom it. A bowler taking more than 2 wickets in a game! Things would never be the same! What would happen to the IPL, the institutional tournament which was into its 23rd year? How would players be able to handle the heat and conditions for 5 straight days, for more than 80 overs per day? All this fitness nonsense was going to ruin the game, many felt.

Modi smiled, realising his work was done. "On a parting note, friends, I'd just like to tell you not be afraid of change. Yes, this may seem too much and too daring. But it could have easily been the other way round. Imagine if we had started out with Test cricket instead, and slowly changed to T20 over the years. Imagine if Bradman were a Test cricketer - imagine the number of runs he would have scored! Imagine if bowlers were given competent wickets to bowl on all this while, they might actually have had a role to play. Why, some of them might have picked up all ten wickets in an innings!"

At this last point, the audience burst into laughter. Modi's legendary wit had worked again. And at once, they knew it was alright. Change was inevitable. Yes, many could picture parody articles on cricket websites for the next few days ("Modi proposes timeless Test matches", one satirist was already thinking up). There would be flak.

But that was how cricket had to evolve if it were to keep up with the other sports of the world. T20 cricket was for too long snubbed by Americans as being 'mentally bland', compared to the intellectual requirement of golf or 3-day baseball. Perhaps Test cricket was that lease of life that was required to save cricket.

In a corner in his room in Bangalore, a young cricketer who'd never been able to break into the India T20 team, Rahul Dravid, smiled. He knew his time had come.

It was that time of the year again. While my friends were busy cheering for their IPL teams, I was trying to figure out which team I should support. Why don't you support the team from your state you ask? You see, I am a Malayalee and there is as much chance of there being an IPL franchise from Kerala as there is for Sreesanth to complete his allotted overs with an economy of less than six, even if it was in a test match, against a school team of girls.

So when a Tamilian friend of mine called me last Sunday and said "Dude! Heard the latest from the IPL bid? There's a group from Kerala involved" I was quick to see through the whole thing and I cut to the chase "Alright wise guy, I get it. Bid from a bunch of guys in Kerala = Tender Coconut. Very funny. Har har." But apparently, he was not kidding. There would be a new IPL team from Kerala starting next season!!! Wow! Maybe Sreesanth would get the purple cap this season. (We Malayalees make fun of Sreesanth in public, but secretly hope and pray that he does well)

My scepticism regarding a group of investors making a respectable bid for an IPL team from my state was well-founded. I do not really have to mention the strikes which are an every day occurrence, they actually made an Oscar winning movie about it - Hartal O'Ker. For those of you who are not familiar with the political situation in Kerala, here is how it goes. Every five years, the opposition party and the ruling party would switch roles and do nothing else except chase away investors, be them Indians or foreigners. The twitter-compliant elected representatives of the state assembly (there are 140 characters in all) would ensure that the state remained stagnant while others surged ahead. In fact, Kerala has always reminded me of the "Mark Time, March" from school days: Stay rooted to the same spot and switch between the left and right periodically.

So it was indeed a huge, pleasant surprise when the news of the Kochi team came through. And God knows that his country deserves it. Kerala has produced some of the finest sportsmen and sportswomen over the years. Of course, most of us don't know them because they did well in athletics, volleyball and football which quite sadly our race can never do well in (and with the advent of this new IPL team, I am sure there'll be more famous cricketers from Kerala in the years to come). But the passion with which Malayalees support sports is legendary. If you're travelling to Kerala this summer and you happen to pass through its northern districts, you would be surprised to see it adorned with flags of Brazil, Argentina, Portugal and other footballing nations. The posters and cut-outs of Messi and C. Ronaldo will line the streets and various local football clubs proclaiming their support for their favourite nation will organise football-viewing centres.

That doesn't mean Malayalees don't love their cricket, they just haven't been exposed enough to it. I was there at the Kochi stadium when India beat Australia, cheering with 70,000 others when Tendulkar took 5/32, his best ever bowling performance. I was there when India beat South Africa twice in the same match (because of a scoring error) and the atmosphere was spectacular. I can't wait to experience those magical moments again: the non-stop percussions and the spontaneous Mexican-waves, the tremendously loud and sportive crowd which chanted "Po-llllloh-ck, Pollock" every time he was at the third man boundary and much much more.

I don't know what the team will be called, but it will probably be written fully in lower-case to appease those staunch opposers of all forms of capitalism. Whether they name the team Kerala strikers or Cochin cowboys (no cattle-class reference intended), one thing is for sure - the whole of Kerala will be there cheering its team till the very last ball. I cannot wait for Kerala's tryst rendezvous with destiny.

Dempo to take on tricky JCT tomorrow

Published Fri, Mar 26 10 04:09 PM

Margao, Mar 26 (PTI) On a high after their impressive win against Churchill Brothers, Dempo will be looking to keep the momentum going when they clash with JCT in a 18th round match of I-League at Nehru Stadium here tomorrow. Dempo coach Armando Colaco said it was their best performance in the league. "We played entertaining football and never felt the absence of our key players." Youngster Joaquim Abranches, Marcus Peixoto and Nicolau Borges gave their best in absence of senior players Sunil Chettri, Sameer Naik and Clifford Miranda. Alonso not to rely on other drivers slipping up to win Australian Grand Prix

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 03:59 PM

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Formula One ace Fernando Alonso, who won the year's first grand prix at Bahrain, has said he does not rely on other drivers slipping up to win this weekend's Australian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard is bidding for his second Melbourne victory in a row. Alonso aims to qualify at the front of the grid at Albert Park tomorrow to ensure the outcome of the race is in his own hands.

"Hopefully here in Australia we can be strong and we can fight for the win. We were lucky enough to win after Vettel's problem. Hopefully we can start in front of him and not need to wait for any problem," The Sun quoted Alonso, as saying.

Qualifying at the front will be easier said than done, however, with Vettel and team-mate Mark Webber likely to be challenging as well as both the McLarens and Mercedes drivers.

New rules banning race refuelling and limiting cars to one tyre change were blamed for turning the Bahrain GP into a boring race.

But Alonso said: "We need to be calm and wait for some races to see if the new rules have some impact. Last year in the first seven races Jenson Button won six. Was it boring? Maybe yes, maybe no."

"This is Formula One. If we want to see wet races, safety cars, all these things every race, it will not be Formula One any more.

"If people want extra show, maybe they need to reconsider if they want to watch Formula One," he added. (ANI)

I wouldn't have been able to sit home as captain, says Vaughan

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 03:55 PM

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Former skipper Michael Vaughan has said that he could never have taken a break from the England captaincy like Andrew Strauss.

But Vaughan believes fellow Ashes-winning skipper Strauss will reclaim his authority once he returns to the dressing room.

Strauss took a rest from the recent tour to Bangladesh and England won every match under stand-in captain Alastair Cook.

"I wouldn't have been able to sit at home as captain knowing I was fit to play. But Andrew thought he needed a break. I can understand his decision; we must look at the bigger picture," The Sun quoted Vaughan, as saying.

"He wants to be fresh for next winter's Ashes. If we go to Australia, win the Ashes and Straussy has a stormer, it'll be a masterstroke," he said.

"Straussy will be fine in the dressing room when he returns. The players are respectful of him, right behind him," Vaughan said.

"But I'm sure he'll get stick with the likes of Graeme Swann, Paul Collingwood and Kevin Pietersen giving him banter about picking and choosing tours," he added. (ANI)

F-1 drivers slam timing of 'dangerous' Australian Grand Prix

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 03:23 PM

Melbourne, Mar. 26 (ANI): Leading Formula One drivers have slammed the "extremely dangerous" twilight timing of the Australian Grand Prix.

With the race moved to a 5 p.m. (AEDT) start time, a mix of shadows and bright setting sun unnerved many drivers last year - but their complaints went unheeded.

The later start was made in a bid to attract a larger European television audience - yet there is compelling evidence to suggest that has not happened.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Red Bull star Mark Webber, Lotus veteran Jarno Trulli and Renault's Robert Kubica all complained about the difficult conditions they are forced to drive in at high speed.

Kubica was scathing about the timing.

"Last year it was extremely dangerous the last 20 laps of the race," the Pole said.

"Going through the last corner was like going through a blind place, it was impossible to see," he added.

"It's not nice to go in an F1 car through a corner where it's really very difficult to see anything. To be honest, I am surprised to see it was this time," he said.

Trulli said last year the drivers' complaints were ignored.

"We raised our concerns last year, but apparently nothing has changed," Trulli said.

"We have given our opinion and that's it and the FIA or whoever has decided to keep a twilight race at that time. We just have to deal with it," he added.

Trulli said apparently the only way to effect a change was to tell authorities they loved the start time - then it would be changed.

Webber said Trulli had "hit it on the head".

"If you picked the best time to have a high-speed sporting motor race event obviously it's not when the sun is at eye level with us," he said. (ANI)

Wayne Bridge dating Kim Kardashian?

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 03:19 PM

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Soccer star Wayne Bridge has got a new date, and she is none other than former Playboy centrefold Kim Kardashian.

Bridge, 29, bumped into the busty telly babe in a Miami club's VIP area after fleeing the furore over ex-love Vanessa Perroncel's fling with his former team-mate John Terry.

And since then, the pair has been exchanging texts and is planning to meet when Kim flies to London next week.

"They met while Wayne was cheering himself up on a lads' night out and got on like a house on fire," the Sun quoted a pal of the Manchester City ace as saying.

"They exchanged texts, have been in touch ever since and will be hooking up when Kim comes to the UK.

"It's early days but she's certainly put a smile back on Wayne's face as she's great fun and absolutely gorgeous. He's looking forward to catching up when she's in town," said the friend.

The pair was introduced at Miami's trendy Nikki Beach Club where Bridge was out partying with fellow city stars Shaun Wright-Phiillips and Micah Richards this month. (ANI)

Yuvi's night-outs have cops and team in a fix

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 01:25 PM

Mohali, March 26 -- Yuvraj Singh's nocturnal excursions are causing a firestorm in the Indian Premier League (IPL) team he plays for, Kings XI, Punjab. Yuvraj has been reported at least twice for sneaking out of his hotel without informing the authorities concerned, the second time on Tuesday night. On this second occasion, the Chandigarh police sent in a written complaint to the management of both the IPL and Kings XI. Kings XI Chief Executive Officer Anil Srivastava said it was an "internal matter". "We are discussing it," he told Hindustan Times. "Players had been briefed well in advance about the dos and don'ts with regard to security." The star cricketer, however, said the accusations and reports were malicious and baseless. "This is all rubbish. Whenever I've left the team hotel, I've taken permission from the relevant authorities and local police. I don't know where all this speculation is coming from," Yuvraj told HT on Thursday afternoon, a day after Kings XI went down to the bottom of the IPL rankings table. Though Kings XI co-owner Ness Wadia said he did not want to comment, he had made little secret of his feelings on the matter of icon players in an interview to HT last week. "The icon player concept was introduced with a lot of good intentions. But maybe it hasn't worked for some teams," he said. "I think franchisees know who their valuable players are. You don't need an icon tag."

Murray rejects Lloyd's criticism for UK-Lithuania Davis Cup miss

Published>Fri, Mar 26 10 01:09 PM

London, Mar. 26 (ANI): Britain's best tennis player Andy Murray has hit back at former Davis Cup captain John Lloyd for criticising him for missing the clash in Lithuania earlier this month.

The British No1 chose to sit out the tie following Britain's relegation to Europe/Africa Zone Group II.

Lloyd questioned Murray's commitment to Great Britain, but Murray said he had made the right decision.

"I can understand to a certain extent that everyone would like me to play in the Davis Cup because obviously we've got a better chance of winning. But the last tie I played in Davis Cup, I was injured. I played through the match when I was injured and it set me back probably double the amount of time that it would have done if I hadn't played," The Sun quoted Murray, as saying.

"No one talks about that side when you're playing through matches when you're hurt and it sets you back and then you drop ranking points," Murray added.

"I don't see John coming out and having a go at Roger Federer or Rafa Nadal or Andy Roddick or whoever, the guys that don't play Davis Cup all of the time either. I think there needs to be a bit of perspective there that it's not just me missing the Davis Cup tie," Murray said. (ANI)

Heat scorch Bulls to dent Chicago playoff hopes

Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem (C) drives to the basket between Chicago Bulls forwards Chris...

Published Fri, Mar 26 10 12:53 PM

The Miami Heat put a serious dent in Chicago's playoff prospects with a resounding 103-74 victory on Thursday.

Jermaine O'Neal scored 24 points while Dwyane Wade was the team's playmaker with 12 points and 10 assists as the Heat (38-34) built a 30-point halftime lead and moved into sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

"We knew how they were going to try to defend us and put a lot of guys on me so I made easy plays and it became contagious," Wade told reporters.

Wade acknowledged that he had previously struggled to play well in his hometown Chicago.

"Today I decided to slow down and play like I would anywhere else."

The defeat dropped Chicago 2 ? games behind the eighth-placed Toronto Raptors with 11 regular season games left.

The Bulls, who came into the game winners of two in a row following a 10-game losing streak, were boosted by the return of Derrick Rose (wrist) and Joakim Noah (foot).

However, Chicago (33-38) shot a woeful 33 percent from the field with Hakim Warrick leading team in scoring with 14 points from the bench.

The Bulls' decision to double-team Wade early on backfired as the Heat scored 31 points in the first quarter.

Michael Beasley finished with 15 points and Udonis Haslem had 14 to give the Heat their third win in a row.

"We're playing very good ball and I think we've finally found our identity," O'Neal said. "We've been doing this for the last month or so that's why our record is that way."
