Champion Kim Yuna could only finish seventh in the women's short programme at the figure skating world championships after suffering a problem with her left foot on Friday.

The Olympic gold medallist started her routine well but then got into difficulty and will struggle to make the podium following Saturday's free programme.

"My first triple-triple was really good and I was ready to do my flip. I don't know what happened, my left foot was just shaking a lot and I just want to find out what it is," the South Korean told Italy's Rai TV.

American Mirai Nagasu led at the halfway point of the women's competition with 70.40 points ahead of Vancouver silver medallist Mao Asada of Japan in second, Finland's Laura Lepisto in third and Italy's European champion Carolina Kostner in fourth.

Kim managed 60.30 points with Lepisto on 64.30.

The dance competition concludes with the free dance later on Friday with Canada's Olympic champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir leading after the first two sections.
