INTERVIEW - Bielsa revolutionised Chile, says Isla

Published>Fri, Apr 16 10 12:29 PM

Chile midfielder Mauricio Isla credits coach Marcelo Bielsa with revolutionising the national side and says his faith in young players helped them qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals.

"The great virtue and merit of having qualified for the World Cup is only his," the 21-year-old midfielder told Reuters in a telephone interview. "We players know we are the ones who play but he revolutionised the country.

"He built a team with very young players who had got no chance of playing in the senior team."

Chile, who face Spain, Switzerland and Honduras in Group H at the finals in South Africa, achieved several milestones in qualifying, including a first competitive win over Argentina.

They will be appearing at their first World Cup finals since 1998.

Bielsa tried out 37 players and formed a good nucleus by the fifth of their 18 matches in the South American group, a 2-0 win away to Bolivia at altitude in La Paz.

"He arrived in Chile and changed quite a lot of things, he worked on things we had never done and, thank God, it worked with a great campaign in the qualifiers," said Isla, who plays for Italian club Udinese.

"He tries to plan a good game depending on how the opponents line up and how we can complicate them and if we play badly never mind. He's not the kind of coach to hold you responsible for mistakes."

Isla identified Argentina captain Javier Mascherano as his ideal midfield role model.

"I really like the way Mascherano plays," he said. "It's good to observe. I'm a very young player who likes to watch a lot of other players to be able to copy the good things they have," he said from Italy.

Both Isla and Mascherano made their international debuts under Bielsa, who coached Argentina from 1998-2004.

Mascherano made his Argentina debut against Uruguay in a friendly in July 2003 when he was just 19.

IT officials have gone back satisfied: Modi

Published Fri, Apr 16 10 11:47 AM

New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) Offering IPL to any scrutiny by any agency, its commissioner Lalit Modi today said that the Income Tax authorities had sought details relating to two new franchises Kochi and Pune and have gone "satisfied". Debunking reports that he was quizzed by IT officials for seven hours last evening, Modi told PTI in a telephonic interview "they wanted the name of bidders, the process of bidding and the details of the bids for the two new teams... we have complied with everything and they have gone back satisfied about the entire process." Income Tax teams had visited IPL offices in BCCI at Wankhade Stadium as also Lalit Modi''s offices in Worli, Mumbai, in the face of a controversy relating to the ownership of the Kochi franchisee after a successful bid of Rs 1,533 crore. On the inquiry part, Modi said, "I was questioned for only 15-20 minutes and they wanted to know formally IPL''s position on the bidders and the related issues. We explained it to them. They wanted all the relevant papers and to collect those relevant papers from 2-3 different places, it took some time." The former BCCI chief and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had come out openly in support of Modi last evening saying "there in nothing wrong in disclosing the names of the stakeholders (of IPL franchisees) to the public." His statement came amidst controversy over Modi questioning the ownership of the consortium that won the Kochi franchisee. It was alleged that Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor had a hand in his close friend Sunanda Pushkar getting free equity worth Rs 70 crore in IPL Kochi, a charge vehemently denied by the minister. Pawar had also defended Tharoor saying his ministerial colleague''s "basic interest" was to bring cricket to the centrestage in Kerala and provide opportunities to players from the state. Asked if IT officials had sought details about other teams that were bid three years ago, Modi said "they had asked few questions on it and after they were told that information is in public domain, they did not seek further details." Dhoni blames Hayden, self for loss

Published>Fri, Apr 16 10 11:19 AM

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today conceded his and opener Matthew Hayden's poor run of form has hit his side hard in the IPL as they now depend on the largess of other teams to qualify for the semifinals.

"Hayden has been our leading player, so him not batting well as he had been has affected us. I have also fired only in a few matches. After the injury, I wasn't 100 per cent sure of what I was doing in the middle. I am a sort of player who loves to spend more time on the wicket," Dhoni said after his side's six-wicket loss to Delhi Daredevils.

Asked about his side's chances for a semifinal spot, Dhoni said, "It's not in our hands now. It depends on Deccan Chargers, who have two matches while we have only one.

Shooter misses flight to WC due to Chinese stapled visa

Published Fri, Apr 16 10 10:55 AM

New Delhi, Apr 16 (PTI) Commonwealth Games gold medallist shooter Pemba Tamang was stopped by immigration officials in Mumbai from boarding a flight to Beijing as his passport had the "invalid" stapled visa, which China issues to the Indians from Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh. Tamang, a resident of Arunachal, was last night going to Beijing for International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup, to be held from April 17 to 24. The Rapid Fir pistol shooter said he was not aware of the fact that the Ministry of External Affairs had declared stapled visas as invalid for travelling out of the country in an advisory issued last year in November. "I had travelled to China on a paper visas on three previous occasions and I was wasn''t aware that the government had declared them invalid. If I had known, I would not have accepted the visa when it was issued to me," Tamang told PTI. Recalling the sequence of events in Mumbai, Tamang, who is part of a 28-member team for the World Cup, said he was stopped by the immigration after checking in. "We were boarding the flight from Mumbai for the World Cup. We were first supposed to go to Bangkok and from there to Beijing. Immigration officials told me that my visa was not valid as the government does not accept stapled visas. "I tried to explain that I had travelled on such a visa three times earlier but they said the new guidelines don''t allow it anymore," he said from Pune. Tamang, however, can still make the World Cup if he is issued a fresh pasted visa. "I may still go because my event is on April 21 and 22. Immigration people told me that if the Indian Embassy in China issues a letter relaxing the conditions then there is a slim possibility of me going," he said. Reacting to the controversy, the National Rifles Association of India''s secretary Rajeev Bhatia said, "He was issued a paper visa because he is from Arunachal while the rest of the team got the normal pasted visas." "It is true that he has travelled to China in the past on a stapled visa but the government guidelines right now prohibit that. Now, he won''t go unless he gets the normal visa," he added. Last year, the External Affairs Ministry had slammed China for issuing separate visas "to certain categories of Indian nationals on the basis of their domicile, ethnicity and/or place of issue of the passport. "All Indian citizens intending to travel to China are advised that before making any travel arrangements they should first ascertain from the Chinese embassy or consulate, whether the visa being issued to them will be affixed to the passport or will be in the nature of a stapled paper visa, so that they are not inconvenienced or put to any financial loss later on this count," the ministry had said.

Yusuf flies high on new logo

Published>Fri, Apr 16 10 10:19 AM

Mumbai, April 16 -- The Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Yusuf Pathan, who had objected to sporting the Kingfisher logo on his team shirt, has had a change of heart. Pathan had the logo taped over till their away match against the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. But respecting his religious sentiments of not consuming or endorsing an alcohol brand, Kingfisher has given him a new logo without the 'premium' tag. Kingfisher Premium is the label of their alcohol product and Yusuf has agreed to sport only the Kingfisher label that endorses the brand's packaged drinking water section. Confirming the change in the logo, the Rajasthan Royals' chief marketing officer, Raghu Iyer said: "The new logo was given to him after the April 3 match against the Chennai Super Kings. Kingfisher has removed the 'premium' word from the logo, which is the label for their alcohol product. The sponsor respected his sentiments and agreed to change the logo soon after he (Yusuf) made his opinion public. It was a mutual decision and both parties are happy over it."

Matches leave officials in a spot

Dharamsala, April 16 -- As this scenic venue gets ready to host its first IPL match, the long list of VIPs expected to grace the occasion has got the administration on its toes. Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) president, Anurag Thakur, who is a BJP MP from Hamirpur, has sent out invites to top leaders of the party, including president, Nitin Gadkari, leader of opposition, Sushma Swaraj, and the party's leader in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, and Gujarat chief minister, Narendra Modi. Thakur said that of the invitees, few were likely to attend. "Though many prominent leaders figure in the list of invitees, many may not be able to come as Parliament is in session."

With all major hotels in the town being booked by the HPCA and Kings XI Punjab, the administration is finding it difficult to arrange for well-furnished rooms for the VIP guests.

Saina made to sweat

Published>Fri, Apr 16 10 09:49 AM

New Delhi, April 16 -- "Thank God", were the words that came to mind after Saina Nehwal beat Julia Pei Xian Wong of Malaysia 21-14, 21-16 to storm into the quarterfinals of the Asian Badminton Championships on Thursday. Saina got off to a superb start and the first two points the world No. 5 won rattled Julia. The Indian kept firing on all cylinders and hit the Malaysian left, right and centre. With Saina leading 10-5, Julia tried to come back into the game but drove a cross forehand into the net. While Julia was busy dealing with problems galore, Saina had designed another plot to decimate her. The ace Indian shuttler began to engage Julia in long rallies. Already struggling with net play, Julia was soon confronted with another big problem. She lost her concentration and started hitting wide. A critical judgment error in picking up a flick service cost her the first game. But in the second game, she was a revelation. The Malaysian made it abundantly clear that she was no pushover. She regrouped and made a strong comeback. She started reading Saina's strokes well after the Indian opened up a 6-0 lead. This had Saina worried. As a result, the Indian started making unforced errors which helped Julia take the lead. Trailing 10-11, Saina concentrated hard and pulled level through a quality backstroke.

'Show bouts' to build boxing's value

Published>Fri, Apr 16 10 09:39 AM

Chandigarh, April 16 -- Sports management company, Percept, in association with the Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) will organise two 'show bouts' as a brand-building exercise on April 17 at a five-star hotel in Delhi. The organisers will invite some special guests, including top corporate honchos, to witness the bout. However, the bouts will not be open to the public. Percept has called two boxers from Wales for bouts with leading Indian stars, Suranjoy and Dinesh. Though Vijender was slated to take the ring, he refrained from it as he is nursing a nose injury he sustained during the Commonwealth Championships. "It's purely a brand-building exercise," said a source. "We will be inviting some special guests and potential sponsors. Through these bouts, we want to show them how attractive the sport of boxing can be. What the corporate world thinks about cricket, we want to present boxing in that manner only. "We are also planning a boxing league on the lines of the IPL in the near future and the 'show bouts' are a step in that direction," he added.

Devils get their due

Published>Fri, Apr 16 10 09:37 AM

Chennai, April 16 -- Gautam Gambhir played a captain's knock as the Delhi Daredevils won a match they had to but could not improve their net run rate substantially in Chennai on Thursday. Chasing a modest 113, they won by six wickets with only eight balls to spare. The Daredevils will know whether they can make the semi-finals after their last match, against the Deccan Chargers whom they take at the Kotla on Sunday. The Chennai Super Kings lost, but they will go into their last match against Kings XI Punjab believing that a win can see them through. When the Daredevils began their chase, R. Ashwin gave the Super Kings an early breakthrough once again as Murali Vijay dived at cover and caught David Warner's uppish cut. Doug Bollinger sent back Virender Sehwag and Tillakaratne Dilshan in quick succession and the crowd went wild. Gambhir took the score forward in partnerships with Dinesh Karthik and Mithun Manhas. Although they could never break free completely, they patiently worked the ball around to inch their side towards the target. In the first innings, the largest cheer went up when the Super Kings reached 100. That was the 19th over. Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss, but little went right for him after that as the Daredevils dismantled the Super Kings' batting with a combination of left-arm pace and part-time off-spin. Drik Nannes was coming back from an injury and Ashish Nehra has recently recovered. However, instead of looking rusty, they looked well rested. Matthew Hayden's poor form continued. He failed to make the most of a let-off and ballooned a Nehra delivery over cover. Daredevils' English import Paul Collingwood ran towards the boundary and caught it easily. It set the tone for the Daredevils' fielding, which was sharp for the most part of the contest. Dhoni, who promoted himself to No. 3, and Vijay were done in by short balls. Suresh Raina and Muke Hussey tried to stitch a partnership but fell to the part-time spin of Dilshan and Sehwag, who were introduced ahead of regular leg-spinner Amit Mishra.

However, Badrinath does not have too many big shots and got little opportunity to try some. Bollinger hit a four and a six and the crowd chanted his name for a while in a half-hearted way as the Super Kings' put up 112 for nine wickets.

The Commonwealth Games Baton in Canada

Published Fri, Apr 16 10 02:25 AM

Bal Krishna Ottawa, Apr 15 (PTI) The Queen''s Baton for the Delhi Commonwealth Games arrived here with great fanfare today as part of its 71-nation journey ahead of the October games. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Minister for Sports Gary Lunn, Speaker of House of Commons Peter Milliken, Speaker of Senate Noel A Kinsella and Indian High Commissioner to Canada S M Gavai were presented the Baton. "The baton''s journey symbolises the unity and shared ideals of the Commonwealth of Nations, and enables communities beyond the Host City to share the Games celebrations," Harper said on the occasion. Chairman of the Media Committee of the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010, Tarlochan Singh briefed the Prime Minister about the arrangements made by the Indian government for efficient conduct of the games. The speakers of both houses of Parliament hosted lunch in honour of the Indian delegation, consisting of members of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Organising Committee of Commonwealth Games. Accepting the Baton, Gavai said it represents the common heritage shared by Commonwealth countries. More than 10 prominent leaders and a large number of Indo-Canadian communities took part in the relay and took the baton around the Parliament Hill in presence of a large number of Canadians and Indo-Canadians. The Queen''s Relay Baton gold plated and weighs about 1,900 grams or roughly two kilograms, with its skin made of soils from all 28 states in India which were laminated onto the baton. A special feature is that it has been pre-programmed to change colours to adjust to the country it is visiting. So when it arrived in Belize the colours changed to red, blue, and white. The Queen''s Baton Relay - which is the Commonwealth Games equivalent of the Olympic torch relay, came through Toronto yesterday and it brought out some of the athletes preparing to compete for Canada in India. The baton, which contains a message from the Queen, is doing a 190,000 kilometre tour through the 71 nations and territories comprising the Commonwealth of Nations. Over the years, the Queens Baton Relay has evolved into a powerful symbol of the unity and diversity of the Commonwealth of Nations. With each Game, the tradition grows in scale and significance, including more nations, involving more participants and generating more excitement, but the Delhi 2010 Baton''s journey is planned to be the biggest yet. It is set to be the longest and most technologically advanced of the Baton Relays to date, according to Mukesh Gupta, a noted advisor. .

Sunanda handed mother of all sweetheart deals

Published>Fri, Apr 16 10 02:09 AM

Sunanda Pushkar's deal with the Kochi IPL team is the mother of all sweetheart deals.

According to the joint venture agreement between the team's shareholders, a copy of which is with The Indian Express, the 25% sweat equity shared by Pushkar and others is "undilutable in perpetuity."

In other words, the value of Pushkar's stake?18% of the 25%?now valued at Rs 70 crore can keep rising without her investing a single rupee in the venture. Tharoor has publicly acknowledged that he helped bring the investors together and has introduced Pushkar as his fianc?e in several gatherings.

Even if other existing investors keep pumping in funds to run the team, or even if new investors are roped in by issuing fresh shares to infuse additional capital, these sweat equity holders continue to retain their stake intact at 25%.

However, the other shareholders' stake will diminish to the extent fresh shares are issued. Also, the sweat equity holders can exit--sell their stake to a third party?after a lock-in period of just two years.

The first right of refusal, however, rests with the other six shareholders. Also, when it comes to infusing funds, it is only the investors other than Rendezvous holding the balance 75% sweat equity that will be required to invest as and when required.

"This is unprecedented, ridiculous and unheard of," said Nawshir Mirza, a leading corporate governance expert in India, who sits on the board of companies such as Tata Industries and Tata Power as an independent director. "Generally, such high percentage of sweat equity will be granted only over a couple of years."

According to the agreement: "Investors (other than the sweat equity holders), jointly and severally, agree that at no point of time the equity contribution of Rendezvous shall fall below 25% notwithstanding infusion of additional funds in the UJV from time to time."

The Rendezvous free equity is held by Kishan Gaikwad, Shailendra Gaikwad and Pushpa Gaikwad, Sunanda Pushkar, Puja Gulati, Jayant Kotalwar, Vishnu Prasad and Sundip Agarwal.

A chartered accountant, who is a whole-time director on the board of a company, globally respected for corporate governance standards, said, "I have not heard of it in my life. After the sweat equity is granted, value is deemed to have been received." According to him, there are two serious issues: One, though shares are issued in lieu of cash for the value the sweat equity holders are bringing to the table, it is considered as income in the hands of the sweat equity holder. So, Pushkar has to file an income of Rs 70 crore in her tax returns. Two, there is a bigger issue of propriety -- being the partner of Tharoor, a person who holds public office, she has to justify the value of the management services she renders.

Hayden and my poor form affected our performance: Dhoni

Published Fri, Apr 16 10 01:29 AM

Chennai, Apr 15 (PTI) Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today conceded his and opener Matthew Hayden''s poor run of form has hit his side hard in the IPL as they now depend on the largess of other teams to qualify for the semifinals. "Hayden has been our leading player, so him not batting well as he had been has affected us. I have also fired only in a few matches. After the injury, I wasn''t 100 per cent sure of what I was doing in the middle. I am a sort of player who loves to spend more time on the wicket," Dhoni said after his side''s six-wicket loss to Delhi Daredevils. Asked about his side''s chances for a semifinal spot, Dhoni said, "It''s not in our hands now. It depends on Deccan Chargers, who have two matches while we have only one. We have to win our last match and then hope Deccan loss one match. The loss against Kings XI Punjab really hurts us." Dhoni said the real difference in today''s match was Delhi having part-timers like Virender Sehwag and Tillakaratne Dilshan who can turned the ball. "I think the two part-time spinners, Dilshan and Sehwag bowled brilliantly. That made all the difference. They were spinning the ball quite well while our part-time spinner Suresh Raina isn''t a big turner. He just takes the pace off the ball and makes it tough for batsmen to hit sixes," he said. "But having made only 112 and stretching them to 19 overs shows character. Doug Bollinger bowled brilliantly and R Ashwin has been supporting him well," he added. Dhoni defended his decision to bat first, saying, "We had been more successful batting first. We love to put runs on the board and then give the bowlers some cushion. Unfortunately, it didn''t work today." Dhoni said Indian players would be in good shape for the Twenty20 World Cup starting on April 30 in the West Indies as they are going into the mega event after playing in a tough IPL. "We would have played 14 IPL matches (by the time of World Cup). So we are in good shape. I don''t think not playing too many warm-up games in the West Indies before the World Cup (to acclimatise to conditions) will make a huge difference as we have played there often and they will mostly prepare batting-friendly wickets," he said. He though conceded that IPL was draining the players and there were niggles on them. "Time flies. It is as though the tournament has only started. But it''s quite draining, especially at this time of the year. Resultantly, there has been a lot of niggles and cramps, and you realise it only when you get affected," he said. .

Gambhir angry at "irresponsible" batting by top order

Published Fri, Apr 16 10 12:55 AM

Chennai, Apr 15 (PTI) Despite his side''s six-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in an IPL match here today, Delhi Daredevils captain Gautam Gambhir said he was not happy at the "irresponsible" batting by his top order. "Chasing 113 was not an easy job and you can''t just bat irresponsibly. The top order need to bat with some responsibility. You can''t bat just like that and leave the job for the lower order," Gambhir, who scored a match-winning unbeaten 57, said after his side''s six-wicket win. "We lost the top order without scoring much and I had to ensure that I stayed till the end. I am happy to have led from the front to get a win," he added. Gambhir said his side need to sort out top order woes in their home match against Deccan Chargers on April 18. "We need to sort out our top order batting and we want to win at home. It is all about finishing the job. Hope they are more responsible in Delhi," said Gambhir, who was adjudged man of the match. Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni rued the lack of part time bowlers who can be handy on slow tracks but said the total was too small to defend. "They got part-timers like Sehwag and Dilshan. We did not have that option and that made all the difference. But we should have batted better. We will look to win our final game. Deccan Chargers need to lose one and we need to win one. We are still in the semifinal race," he said.

Mrdja double sends Vojvodina into Serbian Cup final

Published Fri, Apr 16 10 12:49 AM

Vojvodina Novi Sad's Serbia striker Dragan Mrdja struck twice to put them in the Serbian Cup final with a 3-1 win at holders Partizan Belgrade on Thursday.

Red Star Belgrade will meet Vojvodina in next month's final after they beat city rivals OFK 1-0 with a late goal in the other semi-final on Wednesday.

Serbian first division top scorer Mrdja, who scored twice in his country's 3-0 World Cup warm-up win against fellow finalists Japan last week, continued his excellent run of form with a pair of headers from crosses by midfielder Dusan Tadic.

Mrdja opened the scoring in the 36th minute from close range after a darting run by Tadic down the right and made it 2-1 in the 49th after Radosav Petrovic had equalised with a searing 20-metre shot on the stroke of halftime.

Winger Mario Djurovski sealed Vojvodina's passage to the final on the hour, rifling an unstoppable shot from 25 metres into the goalkeeper's bottom right corner.

The game was played under tight security following a serious incident during Wednesday's semi-final, when a fan was taken to hospital in critical condition from a gunshot wound sustained during the match.

The 21-year old fan is recovering after having surgery for an abdominal wound he sustained midway through the second half, when he was shot by a still unidentified assailant following a scuffle.

Prodrive and Lola rule out F1 entry

Published>Fri, Apr 16 10 12:29 AM

Prodrive, run by former BAR and Benetton team boss David Richards, and former grand prix constructor Lola on Thursday both ruled themselves out of entering Formula One next year.

The British-based companies were considered two of the strongest possible contenders to fill the 13th and final slot left empty by the failure of U.S. F1 to compete this season.

Thursday was the deadline day set by the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) for would-be teams to register an interest.

"Our current focus is on Prodrive's return to the World Rally Championship in 2011 and that alone takes significant resource to design and develop a totally new car," Richards said in a statement.

"Lola... will not pursue an entry application for Formula One in 2011," that company said. "Lola will continue to remain a technology supplier to Formula One via its technical centre and manufacturing facilities in Huntingdon."

Richards is also chairman of British sportscar maker Aston Martin, majority owned by Kuwait's Investment Dar, while Prodrive formerly ran Subaru's world rally team.

He said Aston Martin's activities in all categories of sportscar racing would continue to expand. Prodrive also compete in Australia's V8 Supercar series with Ford.

INSUFFICIENT TIME

"Taking on the challenge of starting a brand new Formula One team, finding the necessary funding and developing the car from scratch is a massive undertaking and not to be under-estimated," said Richards.

"As expected, we've witnessed the financial and technical challenges that the new teams have faced this year in just getting to the grid, let alone being competitive.

"Whilst I have enormous admiration for their efforts I don't believe this is an appropriate strategy for Prodrive or Aston Martin to adopt," he said.

Prodrive had been due to enter Formula One in 2008 but withdrew due to uncertainty over the regulations. A subsequent application to compete in 2010 was not accepted.

They were also in discussions with Renault last year about taking over that team but lost out to Gerard Lopez's Luxembourg-based Genii Capital.

Lola had also applied to be one of three new teams in 2010 under a proposed cost cap, but were beaten by Manor (now Virgin), Campos (now Hispania) and U.S. F1. Lotus were then chosen as replacements for Toyota when the Japanese pulled out.

"A 2010 entry under the cost capped and performance balanced criteria was perfect for Lola," said owner Martin Birrane.

"Sadly our well-developed 2010 F1 project, which included a significant wind tunnel programme, had to be frozen in June 2009. The recently announced applications for 2011 has left us with insufficient time to prepare for what would be a quite different programme."

So far only Italian-based Durango, who dropped out of the GP2 support series last year due to financial problems, have publicly expressed an interest. A final decision is expected to be made by the FIA in July.

Richards did not rule out a future Prodrive entry, however.

"We've enjoyed a successful involvement in F1 in the past and respect the value it can create; we will therefore keep a close eye on developments in the championship," he said.

"However, I have always made it very clear that the timing for a Prodrive entry would be judged on two criteria: that we could be competitive and that the business case would make it a financially viable proposition.

"Today, if we were to adopt the strategy of starting a new team, I don't believe it is possible to meet these two conditions."

Gambhir half century powers Delhi to six-wkt win

Published Fri, Apr 16 10 12:15 AM

R Eswar Chennai, Apr 15 (PTI) Gautam Gambhir cracked an unbeaten 57 as Delhi Daredevils spanked Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in a low-scoring IPL match to virtually seal a semifinal berth here tonight. Captain Gambhir led a remarkable recovery with a resolute batting display with Mithun Manhas (25 not out) after his side made a messy start in the run chase of 113 by losing their top three batsmen for just six runs in the second over. The duo shared 75 runs from 70 balls for the unfinished fifth wicket as Delhi romped home with eight balls to spare and snap their three-match losing streak at M A Chidambaram Stadium. Gambhir, who fought dehydration by applying water on his head and body on few occasions, struck five fours in his 56-ball innings, his second IPL III half century, and hit the winning runs, a two, as Delhi reached 113 for four in 18.4 overs on a pitch which offered turn to slow bowlers . Earlier, Chennai Super Kings could make just 112 for nine after electing to bat with left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra taking three wickets for 26 to lead a superb bowling display by Delhi Daredevils. With the win today, their seventh in 13 matches, Delhi are virtually in the semifinals with 14 points. They play Deccan Chargers at home in their last league match on April 18. Despite the loss, Chennai are still not out of semifinal race with 12 points from 13 matches though the paltry total after batting first took down their net run rate to plus 0.270. Pacer Dough Bollinger was the most successful bowler with two wickets for 24 runs in his four overs while Ravichandran Ashwin and Shadab Jakati got a wicket apiece. Delhi made a disastrous start in their run chase, losing their top three wickets for just six in the second over and looked like throwing away the match before Gambhir and Manhas rescued them.

'Public enemy' Nadal next in line for Ferrero

Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain celebrates after winning his third round match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga...

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 11:09 PM

Juan Carlos Ferrero is on a roll after knocking Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out of the Monte Carlo Masters on Thursday but the ultimate test against claycourt machine Rafael Nadal may come too soon for the former French Open champion.

The ninth seed, who beat Frenchman Tsonga 6-1 3-6 7-5, has now won 17 of 18 matches on clay this year but Nadal is set to be another piece of cake.

"I would love to play him in the semi-final or the final, but right now the draw is like this," Ferrero told reporters.

Maybe Nadal could be up for a bad surprise.

"I have more experience. Maybe my serve and my backhand are a little bit better, and physically I'm stronger than in 2003," he said, although he would not state he was a better player overall.

Ferrero, 16th in the world rankings after dropping to 115th a year ago, reminded everyone why he won the French Open in 2003 with a display of resilience, exquisite slides and sparkling tennis from the baseline.

"I had a good start, maybe he was a bit nervous," said the Spaniard in a courtside interview before sending signed balls into a delighted crowd.

"The third set was superb. I know Rafa very well but we all know he is the number one public enemy on clay."

Tsonga may be the world number 10 but he broke a cord in his racket and started playing out of tune.

Pushed far beyond the baseline by Ferrero's groundstrokes, the fifth seed was helpless in a one-sided first set.

"He (Ferrero) has always been an excellent claycourt player, every time he can he dictates the play to make his opponent run," said Tsonga's coach Eric Winogradsky.

After waving his arms in the air to plead for more crowd support, the Frenchman lined up a set point with a backhand crosscourt winner before levelling the match with an ace.

Winogradsky told Tsonga to eat something at the change of ends, aware the decider would be tough.

Ferrero achieved an early break of serve when Tsonga failed to retrieve a powerful passing shot.

The Frenchman broke back immediately but after saving two match points, he finally succumbed to the third by netting a crosscourt forehand backhand.

Nadal demolishes Berrer to reach last eight

Spain's Rafael Nadal returns a backhand during his third round match against Michael Berrer of...

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 10:51 PM

World number three Rafa Nadal continued his destruction business at the Monte Carlo Masters with a 6-0 6-1 demolition of German Michael Berrer to reach the quarter-finals on Thursday.

He will next face fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, who had the upper hand against France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, prevailing 6-1 3-6 7-5 in an entertaining third-round contest on centre court.

"Juan Carlos is a player who has won more matches this year on clay and he is coming with big confidence. It is going to be really difficult," Nadal told reporters.

The muscular Spaniard dropped only one game in his second-round match against Dutch qualifier Thiemo De Bakker and it long looked like world number 51 Berrer would taste an even heavier defeat.

"I played better than yesterday because I played higher, I played close to the lines, and my feeling is that I had more control on the ball than yesterday," said Nadal. "Good backhands. Very good forehands down the line."

Berrer, a finalist in the Zagreb tournament earlier this year, won only five points in the opening set as Grace Kelly look-likes gathered in the stands on Ladies' day at the tournament.

By the fourth game of the second set, Berrer had doubled his tally, eventually bagging 18 points and triggering wild cheers when he clinched his only game.

A forehand winner down the line ended Berrer's ordeal in a match lasting just 54 minutes and Spanish players enjoyed a fine day on their favourite surface.

David Ferrer ruthlessly brought Ivan Ljubicic down to earth with a 6-0 7-6 victory and his compatriots Albert Montanes and Fernando Verdasco also reached the quarter-finals.

Ljubicic, who won the Indian Wells Masters last month, could not handle Ferrer's devastating forehand in a one-sided opening set before improving in the second as the Spaniard started to misfire.

CLAYCOURT MACHINE

Ferrer will face Philipp Kohlschreiber, who advanced after beating fellow German Philipp Petzschner 6-3 6-4, with a possible match up against claycourt machine Nadal looming.

In front of a sparse audience and a few paragliders swirling around the skies with screeching seagulls, the 11th-seeded Ferrer was initially barely bothered by his opponent's usually lethal first serve.

The eighth-seeded Ljubicic must have been giddy from all the chasing around he had to do as his opponent sent him charging round the court but he recovered in the second set.

He dropped serve in the third game but Ferrer allowed the Croatian to level at 5-5 with a forehand winner.

Ferrer, however, got his act together in the tiebreak, which he clinched 7-4 after Ljubicic netted a crosscourt forehand.

Montanes beat Croatian fourth seed Marin Cilic 6-4 6-4 while Verdasco, seeded sixth, recovered from a shaky start to see off Czech Tomas Berdych 5-7 6-3 6-2.

Argentine David Nalbandian wasted no time in a 6-3 6-4 defeat of Spaniard Tommy Robredo, setting up a quarter-final clash with either world number two Novak Djokovic of Serbia or Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka.

Refreshed Broad happy to miss IPL to be fit for England

England's Stuart Broad bowls against Bangladesh during a test cricket match in Dhaka in this...

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 10:29 PM

Stuart Broad capped a dream season by being named one of Wisden's cricketers of the year and said on Thursday he was happy to miss out on the Indian Premier League to ensure he remains in the best shape for England.

Having lost 4kg and picked up a "few aches and niggles" during England's tour of Bangladesh the Nottinghamshire paceman took a few weeks off to recover.

"I've been in the gym, trying to put a bit of the weight back on and just generally easing the aches and pains," he said at the announcement of FTI Consulting as the new sponsor of the MVP rankings.

"As a bowler you get little niggles. Playing for England is the highlight of my career and I felt I needed a couple of weeks' rest before the Twenty20 World Cup to make sure I'm fit and firing."

With Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen previously criticised after picking up injuries in the IPL, Broad, so slim now that he would barely cover all three stumps if he stood chest-on in front of them, said he fully supported captain Andrew Strauss's decision to sit out the Bangladesh tour.

"Obviously you want to play as many games as you can for England but Straussy felt he needed a break and that's great," he said.

"You need your captain really fresh. It's pretty difficult with the fixture list, you want to play every game but you'd break down."

A couple of hundred hardy souls braved a chilly spring wind at Lord's on Thursday to watch the county match between Middlesex and Glamorgan, a far cry from the mayhem of the IPL League where most of the world's leading players are honing their short-game talents before the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies which starts in two weeks.

Broad accepted that England's players could do with sharpening their skills but said he was confident they could still be competitive despite their lack of practice.

"The IPL is something I'd like to do in the future, it's a fantastic tournament, but I just felt that this year, after the tour to Bangladesh and with a hectic year ahead I just needed a little break," he said.

"We do need to develop as a Twenty20 team and players. We've got a couple of warm-up games before the tournament and it would probably have been better to have played a few more but we've had a bit of rest and I certainly feel better for that.

"We have a good chance, if we can get a good start and pick up some momentum, it's a short tournament so we could go well.

"The selection looks exciting, we've got batsmen who can hit fours and sixes right through the order and bowlers taking wickets so I'm looking forward to being out there."

Broad is second in the MVP rankings behind spinner Graeme Swann and both men, who did so much to help England to their Ashes victory over Australia last season, were among Wisden's Cricketers of the year announced on Wednesday.

England wicketkeeper Matt Prior, swing bowler Graham Onions and Australian batsmen Michael Clarke completed the quintet honoured on Wednesday.

"It was a fantastic evening, going up and getting the award with such illustrious people and past winners in the room," Broad told Reuters.

"It was a huge honour to get the leather book with my name on, you can only win it once and nobody can take that away.

"I was also very proud to have four England players in the five. That really shows how far we've come as a team."

I'm not just a speed merchant, says boxer Martinez

WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik(L) and WBC super welterweight champion Sergio Martinez of Argentina pose...

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 10:09 PM

Sergio Martinez had been expected to rely on speed to thwart world middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik's punching power in their title bout Saturday but the Argentine said he was also prepared to trade blows.

"All this year I have been training for this particular fight," world super welterweight champion Martinez of Argentina told reporters through an interpreter. "This Saturday, it will be a war."

Pavlik, a natural middleweight who stands 3-1/2 inches (9 cms) taller than WBC super welter champion Martinez, sounded a little surprised at Martinez's declaration about their scheduled 12-round showdown at Boardwalk Hall.

"I'm excited," the hard-hitting Pavlik said. "If it's going to be a war, I'm definitely going to be there."

The 28-year-old Pavlik is 36-1 with 32 wins within the distance.

Martinez, 35, who competed in soccer and in cycling before turning to boxing, is 44-2-2 with 24 stoppages.

Pavlik's trainer, Jack Loew, was sceptical about Martinez going toe-to-toe with his man.

"I'm glad he knows how to ride a bike, because he's going to be on one."

NIGHTMARE YEAR

Both champions have a lot to prove.

Pavlik is coming off a nightmare year, sidelined by problems stemming from a staph infection in his right hand that forced him to withdraw from a scheduled match against fellow-American Paul Williams.

Since suffering his only career defeat in a lopsided decision in October 2008 when he moved up in weight to fight 43-year-old Bernard Hopkins, Pavlik has made two mandatory defences against lesser opponents.

"I had to take those mandatory fights," Pavlik said. "This is a tough fight and we're prepared."

Martinez has a draw and a majority decision defeat from his last two bouts, though many observers thought he won both.

In February 2009 he had appeared to knock out former welterweight champion Kermit Cintron in the seventh round when the challenger was counted out by the referee. After lengthy consultations, it was ruled Cintron had risen before the count reached ten. The bout was judged a draw.

In December, Madrid-based Martinez moved up to middleweight to fight Williams, who claimed a majority decision.

"I'm not frustrated," the square-jawed Martinez said. "I will put in more effort this time to makes sure that no one can take away my victory."

Martinez said he had put on added muscle to fight Pavlik.

"I spent three weeks just building more muscle, lifting weights to build my body to fight at 160 pounds," he said. "You will see an Argentine warrior."

Saina is a Roger Federer fan

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 09:59 PM

New Delhi, April 15 (IANS) Roger Federer has a new fan in Indian badminton sensation Saina Nehwal, who watches the matches of the Swiss champion to learn from his mental make-up.

Saina's mother Usha Nehwal, who is here to see her daughter at the Badminton Asian Championships, said she ensures that she learns by watching Federer.

'I make her see Roger Federer's matches, so that she could see how he approaches his match psychologically.'

Asked whether she listens to her mother's instructions from the courtside, Saina said: 'I am short tempered. So, my mother and even coach Atik (Jauhari) sir keep telling me to maintain my cool.'

Asked if she has ever resorted to throwing racquet on losing her cool, Saina replied promptly; 'Roger Federer never does, maybe Nadal does.'

Spilling the beans from the young shuttler's childhood, Usha, a former badminton player, recalled how Saina as a child was first sent for the karate classes.

'I first enrolled her for the karate classes for which she went for a month or a two. Then someone told me to send her to LB Stadium for badminton and after that she has never looked back,' Usha said.

Top seeded Saina was satisfied with her win over Malaysian Julia Pei Xian Wong but is aware the road ahead becomes only difficult now.

'The court from one end was very fast today. It was difficult to play there. Even Julia was having problems playing from that side. That is one of the reasons the games in the championships are being stretched to three games,' Saina said.

'My attacking tosses were going out, so I resorted to smashes and net play. Since I was confident about my stamina, I went for rallies when I was making mistakes and won the last four-five points without any frills.'

'My next opponent is a Malaysian and she is a tough Opponent. She had beaten me in the Malaysian Super Series but I got the better of her couple times last year. So, there are 50-50 chances,' she said.

Tiger Woods' "cheesy" Nike advert final straw for wife

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 09:49 PM

London, April 15(ANI): Tiger Woods' new Nike ad, featuring the voice of his late father Earl, may result in her wife, Elin Nordegren, divorcing him.

In the commercial, Earl - who died in 2006 - asks Woods: "I want to find out what your thinking was. Did you learn anything?"

The Swede model, who has been trying to get over the golfer's infidelity, is apparently furious over the advertisement.

"Elin was violently angry and thought it was a cheesy thing to do. It just made her madder," the Sun quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: "She is over Tiger. I wouldn't be surprised if she files for divorce soon."

Apparently, the beauty also thinks that Woods, who played at Augusta Masters, has returned to golf too soon, following the exposure of his affairs last year.

A pal revealed that Elin, who was not present during her husband's comeback tournament, even avoided watching him on TV.

The friend said: "She's so far beyond hurt now. If she were angry or if she hated him, they might still have a chance to work it out. But she's beyond that. She's numb. She just doesn't care any more.

"She mourned the loss of this marriage, and now she's moving on." (ANI)

Shoaib Malik appeals against PCB punishment

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 09:41 PM

Lahore, Apr.15 (ANI): Former Pakistan cricket captain and all rounder Shoaib Malik has also appealed against the fine and ban imposed on him by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

e PCB had slapped a two billion rupee fine and imposed a year's ban on Malik following the disastrous tour of Australia.

"Malik's counsel Ahmed Hussain has sent his appeal against the fine and ban, and now an independent arbitrator will deal with the case," The Daily Times quoted a PCB spokesperson, as saying.

Malik was banned after an enquiry committee, which was formed to look into Pakistan's shoddy performance during the tour Down Under, held him responsible for creating discord in the team's dressing room.

Malik's appeal comes a day after former captain Younis Khan and Shahid Afridi filed their respective appeals against the PCB's punishments.

While Afridi personally filed his appeal against the three million fine slapped on him on ball-tampering charges, Younis challenged the indefinite ban through his lawyer.

In his appeal, Afridi has argued that he has already served a two T20match ban slapped by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the shocking ball-chomping act during the fifth and final one-day international in Australia, and cannot be punished twice for the same offence.

Kamran Akmal, Umar Akmal and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, who were among the seven cricketers punished by the board, have already lodged their appeals. (ANI)

Pak cricket fraternity hails Lorgat''s visit

Published Thu, Apr 15 10 09:25 PM

Karachi, Apr 15 (PTI) Pakistan''s former cricket captains and chief selector Mohsin Khan today hailed ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat''s visit here, terming it a way to move forward for Pakistan cricket in its existing difficult times. Former captains, Javed Miandad, Rashid Latif, Moin Khan, chief selector Mohsin Khan and other former players were present in the launching ceremony of the World T20 Cup attended by Lorgat. "We should not complain and face the realities of the times. We need to move forward and find solutions to our current problems," former captain and PCB Director-General (Cricket) Javed Miandad said. He said Lorgat''s visit was a good sign for Pakistan cricket and it showed that the ICC was slowly regaining confidence in the ability of the PCB to host international visitors. "We cannot rush things because of the situation at home but we need to work closely with the ICC and other member countries to ensure that international teams start visiting Pakistan again soon," he said. Rashid also pointed out that the PCB should work on the visit of Lorgat and use it as an opportunity to start convincing other boards to start tours to Pakistan. "It is not necessary we have a full tour. We can start off by inviting a team or a world eleven to come and play a few games in one or two cities and then move ahead. I agree with Lorgat that we need to be patient and wait for the situation to improve," Rashid said. Mohsin Khan said Lorgat''s visit showed Pakistan cricket was vibrant and kicking. "We are just going through a difficult phase and inshallah things will improve soon. I have told the players that they must win the T20 World Cup to keep the confidence of the people alive in the sport and in their national team," he said. Wasim Bari, PCB chief operating officer, said PCB Chairman Ejaz Butt would be meeting ICC officials next week in Dubai to discuss the issue of international cricket in Pakistan and recommendations of the ICC task force on Pakistan. "There is a proposal to invite a world eleven team to Pakistan but there is also an issue of finding a slot for this visit. We ourselves are very busy in 2010 before the next full World Cup," he said.

Saina, Aditi in quarters, Kashyap falters in Badminton Asia Championships

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 08:51 PM

New Delhi, April 15 (IANS) India's Saina Nehwal and Aditi Mutatkar sailed into the quarterfinals of women's singles while Parupalli Kashyap bowed out after a close fight to leave the men's draw bare of home challenge in the Badminton Asia Championships here Thursday.

Top seed Saina breezed through her second round match against Julia Pei Xian Wong of Malaysia 21-14, 21-16 while Mutatkar, who is coming back from a knee injury, made it to her first quarter-final of the continental championship with an impressive 23-21, 21-11 victory over Hsiao Huan Chen of Chinese Taipei at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.

Also reaching the quarterfinals were Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas in men's doubles. The third seed Indian pair went past Thailand's Patipat Chalardchaleam and Thitipong Lapoe 21-14, 21-15.

The biggest casualty of the day was top seed Indonesian Taufik Hidayat, who was sent out of the tournament by Hsuan Yi Hsueh 20-22, 16-21. The Chinese Taipei shuttler will take on sixth seeded Japanese Kenichi Tago, the finalist of All England Open Championships, in the quarter-finals.

Saina will next face another Malaysian Mee Choo Wong, seeded seventh, who got past Singapore's Beiwen Zhang 20-22, 21-9, 21-14.

Saina, who had beaten Wong to win her first international title in the Philippines Open in 2006, took just 28 minutes to sail past the Malaysian.

Wong, who is coming back from an injury, was no match to a fleet-footed Saina in the first game. She made a slew of errors. Saina opened up a 5-2 lead and never looked back, playing some delectable drop shots.

She cruised to a 7-1 lead in the second game before Wong made a brief revival and took the lead for the first time at 9-8. Saina, however, again took control of the game after some keenly contested points.

'When I was down in the second game, I went for the rallies. I am confident about my stamina and could play the last four-five points without any frills.'

'I face a tough opponent next. She has beaten me in Malaysian Super Series, but I have also defeated her couple of times last year. So it is a fifty-fifty match for me.'

Mutatkar put up another gutsy performance and showed steely resolve to save four game points in the fiercely contested first game. In fact, Mutatkar was trailing in the first game, but she kept her patience.

With her deft touches and supple wrists, Mutatkar kept the shuttle in play and waited for the right moment to score. The long injuries have not robbed the Pune girl of her touch.

The second game was a close affair with both players locked at 6-6 and later at 9-9, but Mutatkar slowly opened up a 15-11 lead and made no mistake in closing out the match.

'The first game was pretty close and I was finding it difficult to read her drop shots. But then I played some good strokes towards the end and that boosted my confidence. I kept telling myself that I can fight. I played more rallies and that wore her out after 10 points in the second game. It is my first quarterfinal appearance in Asian Championships and it has come after a two month injury lay-off. I am mentally stronger now,' she said.

Mutatkar, 22, will now face Chinese qualifier Xin Liu, who upset eighth seed Japanese Sayaka Sato 19-21, 21-7, 21-11.

Kashyap, who was playing at the same time at the far court, was not so fortunate as he went down to seventh seed Yun Hu of Hong Kong 16-21, 21-18, 13-21 in a marathon hour- long match.

Kashyap, who was India's lone challenge left in the men's draw after six players bowed out on the opening day of the main draw, looked in a better position to make it to his second consecutive quarterfinal of the tournament, but faltered at the final hurdle.

The Hyderabad boy, ranked 30 in the world, covered up initial deficits in the first two games, but lacked the penetration in the third when his smashes found the net.

The two players were tied 10-10 in the second game, and when the Indian was trailing 12-13 a line call judgement that was overruled by the chair umpire in favour of Hu unnerved Kashyap. The Indian lost focus from there on and Hu sailed into the quarters.

Coach Pullela Gopichand, who opposed the overruling as it came after Hu's protest, said it proved crucial. 'I think the call made the difference after which Kashyap's opponent took five straight points.'

Kashyap, on his part, said he made a series of errors in the third game.

'I was making him play at the corners of the court and it did help me to score points. I made mistakes in the third game and paid for it.

Will never leave KKR, says Shah Rukh

Published Thu, Apr 15 10 08:19 PM

New Delhi, Apr 15 (PTI) Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan said he will never leave the outfit despite its lacklustre performance in all three editions of the Indian Premier League. The KKR could not make it to the semifinals in the first two editions and the trend is almost certain to continue this year as well with the Sourav Ganguly-led side languishing at the seventh place with just a theoretical chance of making it to the last four. Shah Rukh, however, insisted he was not washing his hands of the beleaguered outfit. "Everyone jumps to silly conclusions as soon as we lose. Idiots who don''t know perseverance and passion make me who I am," wrote the Bollywood actor on his Twitter page. "KKR is my team and I will never ever leave it, said million of times before," he said. Interestingly, Shah Rukh got a word of consolation from Rajasthan Royals skipper Shane Warne, whose team like KKR, also needs a miracle to reach the semifinals. "Hey buddy, you''re a champion and your charisma is something I''m sure inspires a lot of people. Hang in there, sport is cruel sometimes," wrote the spin great who led the Royals to a fairytale triumph in the inaugural IPL.

Unity key to our T20 title defence, says Afridi

Published Thu, Apr 15 10 08:11 PM

Karachi, Apr 15 (PTI) Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi said there is no reason why his teammates cannot defend their Twenty20 World Cup title provided they stick together and back each other. Afridi said going into the tournament, starting on April 30 in the West Indies, as the defending champions would definitely mean extra pressure but the players were confident they can defend the title they won in England last year. "The victory at Lord''s was due to a result of excellent team work and if we again play as a unit, and support and back each other, I don''t see any reason why we cannot repeat our performance in England," said the flamboyant all-rounder. Team spirit has never been Pakistan''s strong point with reports of under-performance and groupism almost always doing the rounds. So much so that an exasperated Younus Khan quit captaincy and went into a self-imposed exile after claiming some senior players were lobbying against him. Afridi, however, had no such apprehensions and the all-rounder said his teammates were raring to go. "All the players are looking forward to the ICC World Twenty20 2010 as it will be the first time in more than a decade that we will be going into a tournament as the defending champion," Afridi said. "It is a pleasant feeling and although it adds to pressure, it also gives you the belief and confidence that if you can do it once, you can do it again," he said. Afridi said his teammates were aware of the challenge and would put their best foot forward to live upto the expectations of their fans. "The players know they will be carrying the expectations of their fans on their shoulders and, therefore, I''m sure they will leave no stone unturned in giving their best," Afridi said.

Modi offered us $50m to drop bid, says Kochi team

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 07:51 PM

New Delhi, April 14 -- "One week after we won the bid, Lalit Modi called some of the members of our consortium partners (in a face-to face meeting) and asked us to take $50 million, walk out and forget about the team. He said, 'I'm interested in another team'. We refused." "This is what happened," Satyajit Gaikwad, spokesman for Rendezvous Sports World Private Ltd, the Kochi consortium, told Hindustan Times on Wednesday. Gaekwad is a two- time Congress MP. With Parliament resuming its budget session on Thursday the IPL war of words escalated to a new high with the Kochi team franchise, its mentor minister of state for external affairs Shashi Tharoor and his friend Sunanda Pushkar defending themselves and going on the offensive in the same breath. Gaikwad, who is a cousin of Kochi franchise CEO Shailendra Gaikwad, accused the IPL chairman of "trying to create confusion" and "trying to undermine the team by making statements that will create doubt about us and force us to get out". He denied though, that two prominent Cabinet Ministers were part of any plan to force them out. Modi called the $50m allegation "baseless" and "a figment of imagination". "I met him (the reference in this case was to Shailendra Gaikwad) at the conference and thereafter at the Maurya Sheraton hotel where all owners were present," he said. "We also met during the signing ceremony and that is all. I want to know where I met him to make this offer." Earlier, Modi had reiterated at a press conference in Mumbai that there were "question marks" over who the owners of the Kochi franchise were. "The people who presented the bid documents themselves did not know who they (the owners) were. That is why this issue has come up," Modi said. He later told HT, "It is not a crime to investigate the validity and credibility of the shareholders in the Kochi franchise. I want to know from Kochi owner Rendezvous about the shareholders who have a 25 per cent free stake with them. The real issue is why should anyone get (shares) free of cost and a non-diluteable equity of 25 per cent?" Gaikwad said this was "completely untrue". "There has been no free equity at all, only sweat equity of 25 per cent for management services that will be rendered over time. In Mrs. Pushkar's case, she has been given five per cent sweat equity to look after everything from sponsorship to advertisement to branding and event and media management for the next 10 years. She has handled events for us in the past and is a professional in this field, so I don't see why she is being subjected to this needless controversy." Pushkar issued a statement also angrily denying she was fronting for anyone. "My own business interests and assets are substantial, and efforts to besmirch Tharoor by presenting me as a proxy for him are personally insulting for me as a woman and as a friend," she said. Rendezvous was not taking prisoners on Wednesday. "Every one of our partners, they were known to us in advance and each name was pre-disclosed in the bid document given to the BCCI-IPL," said Gaikwad, adding, "Every detail was furnished and scrutinised, which is why the bid was accepted. As far as who our directors are etcetera, that is not up to the IPL management, it is up to Rendezvous and they are all above board." Gaikwad was insistent that Shashi Tharoor had "no benefit of any kind" from the consortium. "His role as a mentor was basically because he is a leader from Kerala and a cricketer lover. It made sense." Tharoor told NDTV Wednesday evening that he was "very angry". "I've been vilified by Modi. there are other business interests at play here. In a democratic country like India, cricket or anything else shouldn't be a closed shop, it should be transparent." Meanwhile, asked why the IT department was reportedly probing the consortium, Gaikwad said if it was, and he was unaware of that, it was "because of the confusion caused by Modi". "There is no question of there being any questions about where the funding came from. The money invested by the consortium is all tax-paid." So why did Rendezvous Sports, a management consultancy based out of Sholapur in Maharashtra, bid for Kochi? "How does it matter where a company is registered, the world is like a village now," countered Gaikwad.

IT officials visit IPL HQ for inquiry

Published Thu, Apr 15 10 07:39 PM

Mumbai, Apr 15 (PTI) A special team of the Income Tax Department today visited the headquarters of the cash-rich T20 Indian Premiere League(IPL) in connection with an inquiry into financial details and share holding patterns of all the IPL franchisees. Official sources said the team''s visit was part of a "source probe" that has been initiated by the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance to look into the financing aspects of the multi-crore IPL in the wake of the controversy over the funding of IPL Kochi, the new franchisee. The IPL is housed in the BCCI building at the Wankhede stadium. Sources maintained that the visit cannot be termed as a "survey or a search" and that it was undertaken under Section 133 (6) of the Income Tax Act which pertains to the power to call for information. The team also sought some documents. IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi said the IT team''s visit was only an inquiry and not a raid. The I-T department has created a special cell in Mumbai to keep a tab on all income generated by the IPL, the sources said. It said the probe has been initiated to find out if there is any illegal flow of funds or whether any black money in being pumped into the sporting extravaganza including from foreign shores. The probe move came even as the CPI-M said the government should inquire into the source of certain funds flowing into the tournament and reconsider whether any tax exemptions or concessions are justified for this commercial enterprise.

Unlikely heroes for south teams

Published>Thu, Apr 15 10 07:19 PM

India, April 15 -- Most of the five teams, bunched together with six wins and 12 points, would not be mathematically out till the final day of the IPL league next Monday. Run-rates are sure to come into play. The IPL frenzy will reach fever pitch. This is a script, which would have done the best of scriptwriters proud. Two teams have caused most damage to this balance. At a time when Delhi and Bangalore seemed as good as having made the cut, southern uprisings in the form of the Deccan Chargers and the Chennai Super Kings have upset all calculations. Both refuse to die: both have unseemly heroes. And these heroes are young and local. Who would have thought an offie, a young one and a local at that, to look better than a Muttiah Muralitharan on a cricket field? But that's exactly what Ravichandran Ashwin has managed for Chennai. He was robbed of a hat-trick on Tuesday, yet the scalps of Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum and David Hussey were priceless. That he has managed seven wickets from the last three matches at a miserly four odd runs per over is breathtaking. Curiously, Ashwin might not have played had Chennai not opted to re-jig their foreign players, dropping Murali and bringing in Doug Bollinger and Thilan Thushara. He was the culprit earlier when caught in a run-storm of Robin Uthappa and then losing the tie against Punjab. Destiny provided him with a chance and he now has instant stardom. Ashwin's strength is his accuracy and his own version of 'carrom-ball'.

Adam Gilchrist had a choice - should he try an untested bowler in Rohit Sharma? Or keep his trust in Harmeet? He opted for the latter. Harmeet conceded just a single from his six deliveries and took out Uthappa and Steyn off successive balls. He had the courage to try out leg-breaks and is now cast as a hero.

Tharoor meets Gandhi, may get respite

Published Thu, Apr 15 10 06:55 PM

New Delhi, April 15 (PTI) Beleaguered Minister for State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor today met Congress President Sonia Gandhi amidst indications that he may get a reprieve at least, for the time being. Tharoor, battling allegations that he had misused authority to help his friend Sunanda Pushkar to get ''free'' equity of the value of Rs 70 crore in IPL Kochi franchise, had a "brief" meeting with Gandhi. There was no official word on the meeting but the minister is understood to have explained his side of the version of the whole controversy in his first meeting with the party chief since the row broke out. Party sources said that Tharoor may get a respite in the matter, at least for the time being, in the backdrop of accusations that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi had got together to take the Kochi bid away to Ahemdabad. "How can we take any action at a time when the BJP will get the advantage and put us in a tight spot?," remarked a party leader on condition of anonymity. The strategy of Congress about Tharoor appeared to be to give the minister the benefit of doubt on the principle of ''innocent till found guilty''. "Let all facts come out, then the party will react," said Party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed to a volley of questions at the AICC briefing, reflecting the line of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who is currently abroad. .
