Indian athletes set JNS track ablaze, win 5 medals today

Tue, Oct 12 10 09:37 PM

Philem Dipak Singh New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) India completed an unprecedented success in athletics events in the Commonwealth Games here as they collected one gold and four bronze today to take their medal count to 12. Indian women''s 4x400m relay team added another gold to the one won yesterday by discus thrower Krishna Poonia as medals rained for the home country in front of a cheering near-capacity crowd at the Jawaharalal Nehru Stadium. The men''s and women''s 4x100m relay teams, triple jumper Renjith Maheswary and javelin thrower Kashinath Naik added a bronze each. After today''s events, only men and women''s marathon remained in the athletics competition. In terms of number of medals won, it turned out to be the most productive day for India. Yesterday, India swept women''s discus throw with Poonia winning gold to break a 52-year-old drought, while Harwant Kaur and Seema Antil bagged a silver and bronze respectively. The 12 medals, including a gold, is more than the 10 medals the country had won in the earlier editions. The women''s 4X400m relay quartet of Manjeet Kaur, Sini Jose, Ashwini Akkunji and Mandeep Kaur set the track ablaze by winning the race in 3:27.77, ahead of Nigeria (3:28.72) and England (3:29.51). Manjeet was running second at the end of first leg and Jose maintained it. Akkunji then took India to lead with a fast run in the third leg before Mandeep saw off a late surge from a Nigerian to cross the finishing line ahead of the rest. There were scenes of wild celebration among the Indian officials present at the VIP stand and among the vociferous crowd. National coach Bahadur Singh termed it as the beginning of India''s emergence as an athletics power. "We have shown that we can win medals at the highest level. Athletics competition in the Commonwealth Games is of high standard. If we maintain this level for another 3-4 years, India can become an athletics power," Bahadur told PTI. The medal-surge began with the women''s 4x100m relay team of Geetha Satti, Srabani Nanda, P K Priya and H M Jyothi finishing third in a photo finish with a timing of 45.25secs, just one-hundredth of a second behind second-placed Ghana (45.24secs). England won gold in 44.19secs. It looked like India''s final-leg runner H M Jyothi would cross the finishing line at second but Ghanaian Janet Amponsah did better and the home team had to be content with a bronze. India clocked 45.25secs, while Ghana clocked 45.24secs. The men''s quartet of Rahamatulla Molla, Krishnakumar Rane, Shammer Mon and Mohd Abdul Qureshi smashed the national record with a timing of 38.89secs. The same quartet had set a national record of 39.00secs in the semifinals yesterday. India were lagging behind in the first and second legs but Mon took them to fourth place by the end of third leg in the field of eight. Qureshi beat a runner in the final leg to take India to bronze. England won the gold in 38.74secs while Jamaica settled for a silver in 38.79secs. .

Waqar, Mohsin speak different tones at NASC hearing

Tue, Oct 12 10 09:21 PM

Karachi, Oct 12 (PTI) Differences between the national cricket coach Waqar Younis and chief selector Mohsin Khan came out in the open today during the hearing of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports in Islamabad. The two former stars reportedly exchanged words when the committee members asked them about the selection of the squads for the series against South Africa. "Yes, Waqar Younis did say at the hearing that he was not consulted by the selectors or Board when the squad for the coming series was announced," the Chairman of the committee, Iqbal Mohammad Ali said. "Waqar said that he was not consulted or informed on the decision to recall Misbah-ul-Haq to the one-day and T20 squad and to make him captain of the Test squad," Iqbal said. "Basically Waqar complained that the squad announced for the South Africa series was not to his liking and in the past also the views of the captain and coach were ignored to which Mohsin Khan said that the selectors announced the squads on the instructions of the Board Chairman," Iqbal said. Sources, who witnessed the hearing, said that Mohsin reacted to Waqar''s comments by saying that he has always consulted the captain and coach in selection of teams. "Mohsin said that appointment of Misbah as captain was the Board''s decision not his," the source said. Selection has become a burning issue in Pakistan cricket in recent months with the chief selector gaining a reputation that he just folows instructions of PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt. The recall of Misbah, 36, and his elevation as test captain is seen by many as dictatorship by Butt and weak management from the paid chief selector.

Liverpool owners admit breach, Lim ups bid

Published>Tue, Oct 12 10 09:17 PM

The battle for ownership of Liverpool intensified on Tuesday as a second bidder emerged while the club were arguing in a London court room that they should be able to sell for an already agreed but lower price.

American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are trying to block the club's sale after the board agreed a 300 million-pound ($478.1-million) deal with New England Sports Ventures (NESV), owner of the Boston Red Sox, against their will.

Inside a packed court room dotted with Liverpool fans straining to hear the quietly-spoken judge, lawyers for the current owners admitted they had breached their contracts with major creditor Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) when they tried to sack board members in a final bid to keep control of the club.

They said Hicks and Gillett were forced to do this because those board members had failed to consult them properly and to consider alternative offers for the club.

The Americans' lawyers also argued in court that there were alternatives for RBS other than putting the club into administration.

While events unfolded inside the court room, Singapore billionaire Peter Lim threw his hat into the ring with an increased cash bid for the club of 320 million pounds.

The case, which is being watched intensely by Liverpool fans, some of whom were singing in protest against Hicks and Gillett outside the High Court, will also go a long way to determining whether the club goes into administration and faces a nine-point deduction.

BREATH-TAKING ARROGANCE

Hicks and Gillett had tried to dismiss two members of the board and replace them with their own people ahead of the NESV agreement in a bid to scupper the plan, which they said was not in the best interests of the Premier League club.

RBS lawyers argued that Hicks and Gillett had shown "breath- taking arrogance" by trying to change the board.

The bank, majority owned by the UK tax payer, is contesting the case against the owners because it had ruled that only chairman Martin Broughton could make changes to the board.

That was required by RBS to prevent the two Americans from blocking any sale. Tuesday's case is examining whether Broughton had the authority to agree the deal with NESV.

The situation was further complicated when Singapore billionaire Lim increased his bid for one of the world's most famous clubs to 320 million pounds.

Lim, who made a fortune through stockbroking and is Singapore's eighth richest man, said in a statement that he would make a further 40 million pounds available for new players.

If the Oct. 15 deadline for a refinancing of Liverpool's debt is missed, lawyers believe RBS could take control of the club and conduct the sale itself.

POINTS DEDUCTION

That could result in the holding company of the five-times European champions briefly being put into administration, which would result in the points deduction under Premier League rules.

Fans have held boisterous protests calling for the owners' departure, blaming the club's worst start to a season for more than half a century on a lack of new players and uncertainty over the future.

Hicks and Gillett, who bought the Merseyside club in 2007 for 218.9 million pounds and have since burdened it with debt, have seen the 18-times English champions pick up just six points from seven games this season.

While many fans joined together to line the Strand in London in protest on Tuesday, Justin Room, wearing a red Liverpool shirt, had made it into the packed court room.

"I've gone from five years ago in Istanbul watching us win the European Cup to being here, in a courtroom, almost bottom of the league and watching a judge decide our future," he told Reuters.

"They've just got to get out, the owners. They're hated, absolutely hated."

PCB ask Afridi to explain comments on TV show

Tue, Oct 12 10 08:51 PM

Karachi, Oct 12 (PTI) The Pakistan Cricket Board today shot a letter to one-day captain Shahid Afridi for questioning the selection process on a TV channel show. A PCB official confirmed that a letter had been sent to Afridi but said it wasn''t a notice. "I wouldn''t say it is a notice. What I know is that it is more of an advisory in which Afridi has been reminded of his responsibilities as the national team captain while speaking in the media," Nadeem Sarwar, PCB media manager, said. Afridi said he would respond to the letter in the next 24 hours. "I didn''t mean ill towards anyone and I think as captain people expect me to speak on different issues and give explanations," he said. The flamboyant all-rounder said on the show that the selectors didn''t give him players he wanted in the one-day and T20 squads for the forthcoming series against South Africa in the UAE. "Yes I didn''t get two or three players I wanted in the team," he said. Afridi also indicated he would meet the PCB Chairman soon to discuss some issues. "There are some things I want to talk to about with the Chairman when I meet him," he said But the all-rounder insisted that overall the chief selector do consult the captain and the coach before finalising the teams. He, however, refused to take names of the players he wanted in the team. He like former test pacer Sarfaraz Nawaz said that it was time to start building a team for the 2011 World Cup. "Yes I think we don''t have much time now before the World Cup and we need to be sure about the players we will need in the tournament." Afridi also said the selectors should have waited for the national T20 event to finish on October 16 before announcing the T20 squad for the South Africa series. "I wanted to have a look at some new players in the tournament," he added.

New Zealand win Rugby Sevens gold, India finish in bottom four

Tue, Oct 12 10 08:37 PM

Sabi Hussain New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Egged on by a capacity crowd at the Delhi University stadium, the ''All Black'' New Zealand produced a come-from-behind performance against Australia to win their fourth Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens gold medal here today. Hosts India, who yesterday bowed out of the medal contention after losing all three encounters against their higher ranked opponents, finished among the bottom four nations in the Bowl Division. In Rugby Sevens competition, besides the three major medals at stake, two other competitions -- Bowl Division (9th-16th) and Plate Division (5th-8th place) -- also take place for team standings. In the knock-out phase, India played Canada in the morning session and lost 10-43. The Indians were no match for their higher ranked rivals as the Canadians reduced the home squad to mere spectator, scoring seven tries and crossing the line on four occasions to finish with a silver medal in Bowl. They lost the final to Papua New Guinea 10-17. For India, Rohaan Sethna and Puneeth Krishnamoorthy scored a try in each half. "We did not play our best. In the second half we really got to them and scored a really good try. We need to work on receiving balls," Indian skipper Nasser Hussain said. On the crowd, he said, "It''s always positive. They understand that the gap between us and the good teams is big. It''s the first time we played Canada. Taking that into consideration, we did ourselves proud," added Hussain. "We really wanted to get through to the final round (top eight). We were very disappointed with our yesterday''s performance but we did well against India today. I have got utmost respect for them. They are a good team. We just had a few lucky breaks," said Canada captain Nathan Hirayama. Meanwhile, New Zealand, which has not lost a match since winning the first Commonwealth Games Sevens tournament at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia in 1998, scored through late tries from DJ Forbes and Kurt Baker to register a 24-17 comeback win. It was sheer bad luck for Australia as, despite leading for most part of the match, they allowed the New Zealanders to make a comeback and extend their undefeated run in the quadrennial event. .

Tendulkar, Harbhajan rested; Sehwag injured ahead of ODIs

Tue, Oct 12 10 08:07 PM

Bangalore, Oct 12 (PTI) India will be without explosive batsman Virender Sehwag in the upcoming one-day series against Australia due to an injury while Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan have been rested. Although the Cricket Board has not specified the exact nature of the Sehwag''s injury but he is reportedly nursing a shoulder problem. Since Gautam Gambhir is also injured, the selectors have filled the opening slot by calling Murali Vijay in the 14-member squad, which has a new face in batsman Shikhar Dhawan. The selectors have left out injured paceman Ishant Sharma and rested Pragyan Ojha for the three-match series, starting October 17 in Kochi. Paceman R Vinay Kumar, who made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe in May this year, made a comeback and would be part of the pace battery which also includes the experienced trio of Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel and Praveen Kumar. Tendulkar, who has been in scintillating Test form scoring his sixth double hundred in the ongoing second Test against Australia, has not played a one-dayer since the February clash against South Africa in Gwalior. The 37-year-old had become the only batsman to slam a double hundred in the 50-over format in that match. "Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Pragyan Ojha have been rested," the BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement after the meeting of the selection panel here. "Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Ishant Sharma are undergoing treatment for minor injuries, and have therefore not been included," the BCCI statement read. Out-of-favour left-hander Yuvraj Singh, who lost his place in the Test side due to lack of form and fitness, has managed to hold on to his ODI spot in the squad, announced today. Rookie batsman Shikhar Dhawan has benefitted from injuries and rest to senior players and has been given a national call-up. The 24-year-old Delhi batsman has played 52 first-class matches scoring 3526 runs at an average of 45.79. Dhoni is the only wicketkeeper in the squad after the selectors dropped Dinesh karthik for the October 17 to 24 series to be played out in Kochi, Visakahpatnam and Margao. The Squad: MS Dhoni (Captain), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Saurabh Tiwary, R Ashwin, Praveen Kumar, Ashish Nehra, Munaf Patel, Vinay Kumar, Ravindra Jadeja and Rohit Sharma.

Poonia gets emotional recounting her sacrifices to win a gold

Tue, Oct 12 10 07:51 PM

New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Toast of the country after fetching India''s first Commonwealth Games gold medal in 52 years yesterday, discus thrower Krishna Poonia could not hide for long the mother in her as she almost broke down while recounting how she had to be away from her son in search of one aim -- to strike a yellow metal in the quadrennial mega event. Poonia said she had not spent much time together with her son in the past two years because of hectic training schedule, including foreign tours, but felt it had been made up by the gold she gave to the country, the first one after ''Flying Sikh'' Milkha Singh won it in 1958 edition in Cardiff, Wales. "It was extremely tough. If you have a small child you will know it. Myself and my husband (who is also her coach) have not been with our son (Lakshya Raj Poonia) even for a month at a stretch because of the hectic training schedule, including foreign tours," Poonia said, barely being able to fight tears. "I have been training at NIS Patiala. I had also been in USA and just before the Games I had been to Ukraine and so I have been far away from my child. But after winning gold for the country after 52 years I feel I have not been away from my child for so long for nothing. I am satisfied that I have done something for the country by sacrificing my time with my child," she told at a press conference, with her husband Virender Poonia by her side. Asked to whom she would dedicate her gold medal, Poonia said, "I would not have been speaking to you today had my husband not supported me all through. So I dedicate my gold medal to my husband and my son. One was very near to me and the other far (while training). He (Lakshya) had his examination yesterday but he could make it to the stadium after it." Her husband Virender said he and Poonia did not worry much about their son as he was looked after by his brothers'' family. "We are a joint family, so Lakshya was looked after by my two brothers and their wives in our absence," he said. Poonia felt it was not right for some top athletes to cite security and other concerns as reasons for pulling out of the Games and said India can host big sporting events "successfully". "I think it was not right for athletes to cite security reasons for pulling out. India can provide security to our guests. The Games are going on successfully and we have shown that India can host big events successfully," she said. The 28 year-old Poonia said despite the absence of world champion Dani Samuels the discus throw competition was a tough one. "I don''t know why she (Samuels) had pulled out. But even without her the competition was very tough. There was the defending champion (Elizna Naude of South Africa) and former world champion (Beatrice Faumuina of New Zealand)," she said. Poonia said she expects a revival of athletics just like the success of Abhinav Bindra, Vijender Singh and Sushil Kumar had raised the profile of their respective sports in the country. "The performance of Abhinav, Vijender and Sushil had revived and raised the profile of their respective sports. I hope athletics will be revived after India''s performance in the Commonwealth Games. We have already won seven medals and more will come. I am looking for gold in the Asian Games and if we keep on doing well the profile of athletics will be raised," said Poonia who was born and brought up in Agroha village in Kurukshetra district in Haryana. .

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) says the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee has not responded to its request for complimentary tickets for table tennis matches at the Yamuna Sports Complex, though many seats remain vacant.

'We wrote a letter to the secretary general of OC for providing us with complimentary tickets four days ago. We have got no response from him till date. Table tennis is not a popular game in this country and it is critical for us to invite people who can fund us for organising tournaments,' a TTFI official told IANS requesting anonimity.

The complex can seat 4,200 people with 1,100 seats at the show courts and 3,100 at match courts. Forty percent of the tickets have been reserved for the general public and the rest for sponsors and foreign tourists. Not many foreign tourists have been seen at the complex, according to the official.

The federation officials said since they did not have the complimentary tickets they took the help of police officials Monday to get entry to the complex for an 'important' guest.

'We did not have the tickets Monday but we had a very important guest coming to see a match. So, we spoke to the police officials for granting him entry without the ticket. There was no other option,' said the TTFI official.

Button backs Vettel to succeed him as F1's new king

Published>Tue, Oct 12 10 02:37 PM

London, Oct 12 (ANI): Formula One reigning champion Jenson Button has backed Sebastian Vettel to succeed him as F1's new king this season.

The McLaren driver said he and teammate Lewis Hamilton are down, but not out of the title battle.

Button said German driver Vettel will see off fellow Red Bull driver Mark Webber if the team dominates the final three races of the season.

Vettel's victory in Japan on Sunday took him level on points with Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and 14 behind Webber, the championship leader

"Vettel has to beat Mark twice more to be on the same points. And going into the last race with equal points, I'd say Vettel has the legs in qualifying," The Sun quoted Button, as saying.

"If those two cars have the advantage over everyone else, there won't be pressure on Vettel and he will do it. But we will continue to fight. It is a lot harder for us to win the title now, but we won't give up. Anything can happen in F1. We all know that," he said.

Button is 31 points behind Webber while Hamilton's is 28.

The next race is in South Korea on a new circuit, which was finished only a few days ago. (ANI)

Saina''s ''friend, guide'' ends career with loss against her

Tue, Oct 12 10 02:23 PM

Amit Kumar Das New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) She used to hand out tips to Saina Nehwal until just four years ago and an emotionally overwhelmed Anna Rice could not stop the tears from flowing when she ended her career with a loss against the Indian ace at the Commonwealth Games here. A good friend of Saina, the 30-year-old Canadian shuttler recalled the days when she played with her, helping the Indian in little ways to become a better player. Anna, who went down 7-21 10-21 to the top seeded crowd favourite in the quarterfinals of women''s singles last night, said she still loves the game but it was time to quit. "It is very emotional for me but the feeling is yet to settle in," Anna said, tears welling up in her eyes. "I wanted to play for some time more, I mean I love the game but I guess I can''t keep up with these young girls anymore," she added. Anna and Saina became friends in 2006. Saina had started taking her first steps to the stardom she enjoys now but Anna had already become an Olympian at that time. The world number 31 Canadian said she has seen her friend grow. "She is a player who has matured beyond her age. I started going for international tours at 18-19 but look at her, she was on her own when she was just 15 years old," Rice said. "I remember she used to complain that she is losing in three games and I used to tell her that it is a process," she added. Anna said Saina''s success has raised the profile of the sport. "Saina''s growing stature is good for the sport in India. As I see it, the gender equality when it comes to sport is not the same in India. Saina''s success will increase the profile of the sport as a whole in India and that is good for badminton also," Anna said. .

Oludamola''s drug test is a joke: Pearson

Tue, Oct 12 10 12:57 PM

Melbourne, Oct 12 (PTI) Australian sprinter Sally Pearson, who lost the Delhi Commonwealth Games'' women''s 100m gold to dope-tainted Osayemi Oludamola, has ridiculed her rival saying that the Nigerian''s drug test is "a joke". Pearson was the original winner of the race but was disqualified for making a false start which led to the passing of the gold medal to the second-placed Oludamola. But Oludamola has tested positive for banned stimulant methylhexanamine and Pearson sarcastically said she is happy to have run the race "drug free". "It''s just a joke you know," said Pearson. "I don''t know how you can accept a medal knowing what you''ve done to yourself. But I''m happy I''m out here running drug free," she was quoted as saying by ''The Australian Associated Press.'' Oludamola''s A sample tested positive for methylhexaneamine - set to be downgraded to "non specified" status from next year - and officials are still awaiting the results of her B sample.

South Korea gets F1 green light

Published>Tue, Oct 12 10 12:37 PM

Formula One's governing body has given the green light for the inaugural South Korean Grand Prix later this month, organisers said on Tuesday after concerns the circuit would not be up to standard.

The track in Yeongam, about four hours' drive from Seoul, has passed final inspections by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) race director, the Korean organisers Korea Auto Valley Operation (KAVO) said.

The South Korean race is scheduled for Oct. 24, but there had been questions about whether the circuit would be ready on time, with delays pushing back the inspections which had been initially scheduled for last month."

"The Korea International Circuit has been constructed to the highest standards, and will become the epicentre of motorsport in the country," KAVO chief Chung Yung-cho said.

Cancellation would have had a major impact on the world championship outcome, with five drivers vying for the title with just three races to go.

Australian Mark Webber of the Red Bull team increased his lead to 14 points after finishing second in Japan at the weekend behind team mate Sebastian Vettel.

FIA race director Charlie Whiting's go-ahead came after his inspections of the newly finished circuit, erasing fears of cancellation of the inaugural Korean race, with the final layer of asphalt laid only last week.

Whiting notified organisers he would be issuing an official license for the track after the on-site inspections to check whether construction had met engineering requirements, KAVO said in a statement.

KAVO said Whiting expressed satisfaction with the innovative layout of the circuit which will bring spectators close to the track while ensuring safety.

No teams are expecting perfect conditions but they will be hoping the track does not throw up too many problems at a time when consistency is crucial.

South Korea's auto makers hope the grand prix will help raise the country's image as a high-end maker, having emerged as one of the world's fastest growing car export markets.

Cancellation would have dealt a major blow to South Korea's plan to raise its profile as a business and tourism destination by investing heavily in global events including the grand prix and next month's G20 summit, as well as a bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.
