Venus surges into quarter-finals at Melbourne

Published>Mon, Jan 25 10 11:29 AM

Venus Williams continued her domination of Francesca Schiavone on Monday, coming back from a set down to defeat the Italian 3-6 6-2 6-1 and reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

Seventeenth seed Schiavone, who had never beaten Williams in five previous matches, looked set to break the trend after taking the first set and an early break in the second.

Williams broke back immediately to steal the momentum, however, and then steamrolled the Italian in the last set with confident net-play.

She played really well in the first set. I have to give her credit. She just played really aggressively, Williams told reporters. You know, she was making her shots, doing everything she needed to do to win the match.

But, obviously it takes a lot to close out a match, especially on an important match like that one.

I was able just to get some footing back in and start to execute the way I wanted to.

Williams now plays China's Li Na in the quarter-finals after the 16th seed upset world number four Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 6-3.

Williams and Li have played each other just once previously, at the Beijing Olympics where the Chinese triumphed 7-5 7-5 in the quarter-finals.

I guess I don't think of it the same way, Williams said when asked if the loss from the Olympics would help her prepare for the quarter-final.

I'm really just focusing on the now. I don't make it too complicated.

She's a very good player. Obviously to beat Wozniacki, you have to play very well consistently (and) I'm sure she did that.

Li upsets Wozniacki to join Zheng in quarters

Li Na upset Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 6-3 to join compatriot Zheng Jie in the Australian Open quarter-finals on Monday, the first time two Chinese players have made the last eight of the same grand slam.

In a match in which both players struggled to hold serve, the big-hitting Li grabbed the momentum to seal the first set then raced to a 2-0 lead in the second.

Fourth seed Wozniacki, who had her thigh heavily strapped when 3-1 down in the second set, battled to keep in touch with Li, but the Chinese finally held serve at 5-3, sealing it on the second match point after the Dane slapped a forehand long.

Li will meet American Venus Williams for a place in the semi-finals.

Ronaldo goes from hero to villain in Real win

Published>Mon, Jan 25 10 11:25 AM

Cristiano Ronaldo dominated Real Madrid's 2-0 home win over Malaga in La Liga on Sunday, scoring two quickfire goals before being sent off in the second half.

The Portuguese forward had not found the net since the middle of December but slammed two goals past the visitors in four minutes just before the break.

Real were cruising to victory in the second half when Ronaldo tried to spin away from the close attention of Malaga defender Patrick Mtiliga in his own half.

As he tussled with the Dane, Ronaldo swung his arm behind him and caught Mtiliga in the face to earn a straight red card and leave Real with 10 men for the last 20 minutes.

Barcelona top the standings with 49 points from 19 games at the mid-point of the season after beating Real Valladolid 3-0 on Saturday.

Real's win cut Barca's lead back to five points and moved them five clear of third-placed Valencia who were held 0-0 at Tenerife.

Real Mallorca are fourth with 34, ahead of Deportivo Coruna on goal difference, after Mallorca's Borja Valero scored a disputed 80th-minute penalty to earn a 1-1 draw at Espanyol.

Depor were 3-1 winners over visiting Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

GUTI'S PASSES

At the Bernabeu, Hamburg-bound striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was given a warm send-off by the crowd before the start of Real's match.

Xabi Alonso headed against his own crossbar early on but the main action was down the Malaga end.

Guti's return to favour greased the wheels in midfield and it was his pass that set in motion a flowing move which led to Kaka crossing low for Ronaldo to score in the 36th minute.

Soon after, Guti found Ronaldo again and the Portuguese spun on the spot and smashed a fierce drive past Gustavo Munua from outside the area.

In Tenerife, Valencia struggled to impose themselves on a side 18th in the table.

Valencia goalkeeper Cesar kept them in the game and when the chances did fall their way towards the end, they could not find a way past Sergio Aragoneses in the home goal.

At the foot of the table, Xerez's change of coach failed to inspire them as they lost 2-1 to Osasuna and remain 20th, below the two clubs promoted with them from the second division last year, Real Zaragoza and Tenerife.

CA to trial pink balls in Futures League

Published Mon, Jan 25 10 10:51 AM

Melbourne, Jan 25 (PTI) Day-night Tests could soon be a reality after Cricket Australia (CA) today confirmed that it will trial a pink ball under lights during a Futures League match at Adelaide Oval next week. The trial will be conducted during a three-day match between South Australia and Western Australia from February 2-4. The play will start at 2.30pm everyday and finish at 9.30pm. The purpose of the trial is to test, under match conditions, the visibility of the coloured ball under day and artificial light, and also to monitor its discoloration throughout the innings. The initial test-runs will be followed by further trials to assess the visibility and suitability of coloured balls for broadcast TV. In an effort to save the dying fortunes of Test cricket, the International Cricket Council and CA are keen to start the five-day game under under lights. "Cricket Australia is committed to finding a way to make day-night Test cricket a reality and the Adelaide Oval trial is one of many steps that need to be taken before this vision is realised," CA chief executive officer James Sutherland said in a statement. "The results of the trial won''t provide all the answers or a definitive outcome, but it will give us important information and feedback on the delivery of the project," he added.

Li upsets Wozniacki to reach Australian Open quarter-finals

Published>Mon, Jan 25 10 10:39 AM

Melbourne, Jan 25 (DPA) China's Li Na swamped Danish fourth seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-4, 6-3 Monday to reach the third Grand Slam quarter-final of her career with the victory at the Australian Open.

The 17th-ranked Li handed US Open finalist Wozniacki a defeat as the Danish favourite was able to produce only three winners.

Li holds a 1-0 record over upcoming sixth-seeded opponent Venus Williams, the US player booking her spot with a comeback over Italy's Francesca Schiavone 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Li beat Williams in the Beijing quarter-finals two years ago. The Chinese player reached the quarters at last year's US Open and Wimbledon in 2006.

The winner came through on her second match point, firing 21 winners and breaking seven times.

Williams overcame a poor start against Schiavone, turning the tables to survive as the major began its concluding second week.

Williams had not lost a set to Schiavone in their last three meetings and stood 6-0 going onto court.

Ronaldo scores two for Real but is sent off again

Published>Mon, Jan 25 10 10:31 AM

Madrid, Jan 25 (DPA) Cristiano Ronaldo again went from hero to villain for Real Madrid. The Portuguese winger scored both goals in the 2-0 home defeat of lowly Malaga, but was sent off 20 minutes from time for elbowing defender Patrick Mtiliga.

This is Ronaldo's second sending-off and he faces a suspension of two or three matches. In December's 4-2 thrashing of Almeria he scored a brace - then was sent off.

Defender Raul Albiol refused to criticize Ronaldo on Sunday, saying that 'the important thing is that he scored both of our goals tonight.'

The unconvincing win, which keeps their perfect home record intact, keeps Real five points behind unbeaten leaders Barcelona, who hammered Valladolid 3-0 away on Saturday.

Real made an uncertain start, to the chagrin of the Estadio Bernabeu, and Malaga had chances to take an early lead. In the 36th minute, however, Kaka and Guti set up Ronaldo to make it 1-0 with a right-foot shot.

Just four minutes later Ronaldo made it 2-0 with one of his trademark long drives, after taking a pass from Guti.

The world's most expensive player blotted his copybook in the 71st minute, when he angrily elbowed Mtiliga and got a fully deserved red card.

Even so, Real had few problems in holding out against their inoffensive opponents.

Earlier on Sunday, Valencia had been held to a 0-0 draw away to lowly Tenerife on Sunday, which leaves them third, five points behind Real.

'Los Ches' failed to dominate in Santa Cruz and needed veteran goalkeeper Cesar to keep lively Tenerife at bay.

Valencia coach Unai Emery opted to praise Tenerife rather than blame his own players. 'The result is fair,' he said, 'because they pressed us hard and were very ambitious.'

Valencia are five points ahead of fourth-placed Mallorca, who were relieved to battle out a 1-1 draw away to Espanyol on Sunday.

Mallorca needed a late penalty from Borja Valero to claim a draw, after Pablo Osvaldo had given Espanyol the lead.

Mallorca are level on 34 points with Deportivo Coruna, who beat Athletic Bilbao 3-1 on Saturday, but who lost left-back Filipe Luis for the rest of the season with a broken leg.

Sevilla, who beat Almeria 1-0 on Sunday, are sixth with 33 points.

Later on Sunday Getafe beat capital city rivals Atletico Madrid 1-0, to move up to seventh. The only goal came in the 38th minute, when Manu del Moral skilfully turned in a centre from the energetic Pedro Leon.

Atletico, crippled by the sending-off of anchorman Paulo Assuncao, never looked capable of turning the match around.

At the same time as Assuncao and company were crashing in Getafe, Atletico were completing the sale of midfielder Cleber Santana to Brazilian club Sao Paulo.

Sunday's other games all had relegation significance.

Bottom team Xerez crashed 2-1 at home to Osasuna, Zaragoza went down 4-2 in Villarreal. Racing Santander, meanwhile, pulled themselves above the danger zone with a 1-0 win away to local rivals Sporting Gijon.

Xerez, now under Argentine Nestor Gorosito, have just eight points. Then come Zaragoza on 14, and three teams on 17: Tenerife, Valladolid and Malaga.

Egyptian ambition faces major challenge

Published>Mon, Jan 25 10 09:29 AM

Defending champions Egypt face a tough challenge to their hopes of an unprecedented third successive title when they meet Cameroon in the African Nations Cup quarter-final on Monday.

The match in Benguela (kickoff 1600) is followed by the last of the quarter-final clashes between Nigeria and Zambia in Lubango (1930).

Both Egypt, who also defend a record-breaking 16-match unbeaten run at the Nations Cup finals stretching back six years, and Cameroon were sweating on the fitness of key players before the match at the Ombaka Stadium.

Egypt captain Ahmed Hassan has not trained for the last three days as he nurses a calf strain. He could make an African record 170th international appearance on Monday.

Cameroon's captain Samuel Eto'o practised only briefly with his team on Sunday as he was suffering from a sore toe, officials said.

The match winners will stay in Benguela and play against Algeria in the semi-finals on Thursday.

Nigeria start as favourites in Lubango against the Zambians, who surprised many by topping Group D in the first round.

Nigeria play without injured captain Joseph Yobo but are in much better mood after recovering from losing their opening game against Egypt.

Zambia's only win at the tournament came in their last Group D game on Thursday when they edged Gabon 2-1, a result that proved enough to elevate them to the top in their standings.

The winners of the Lubango encounter go to Luanda to meet Ghana, who knocked out hosts Angola in the quarter-finals, for a place in the final.

US teen joins race for youngest round-the-world sailor

Published>Mon, Jan 25 10 05:09 AM

Washington, Jan 25 (DPA) A 16-year-old American girl has embarked on a quest to become the youngest person to sail around the world, adding some competition to an effort already underway by an Australian girl.

Abby Sunderland departed from Marina del Rey in California Saturday in her 12-metre long boat Wild Eyes. She hopes the trip will take between five and six months. While underway she will subsist on dried food, communicate via satellite phone and maintain a blog at www.abbysunderland.com.

Family and friends waved goodbye as she departed.

Jessica Watson, a slightly older Australian, embarked on her round-the-world effort on Oct 18. The Los Angeles Times reported Friday that she was fighting her way through heavy storms.

If either makes it, they will beat current recordholder Mike Perham, a Briton who completed his sailing trip around the world last summer. Perham in turn unseated Zac Sunderland - Abby's brother.

But whereas Zac's route included frequent stops and was along a route with calmer weather, Abby has opted for a faster route with more dangerous weather. But there is less ship traffic along her route and a lower danger of encountering pirates.

Wolfsburg coach Veh's future in doubt after Cologne loss

Published Mon, Jan 25 10 12:49 AM

The future of VfL Wolfsburg coach Armin Veh hung in the balance after the champions lost 3-2 at home to lowly Cologne on Sunday.

Wolfsburg are a shadow of the team who romped to their maiden title last year, losing their last three league matches and failing to win since early November.

"I do not know if I will have the chance to keep on working here," Veh told reporters with his team in 10th place in the Bundesliga, 17 off the top after 19 games. "At the end of the day it is not my decision."

Veh, who steered VfB Stuttgart to the Bundesliga title in 2007, replaced Felix Magath last year but has failed to repeat last season's spectacular form.

Their once rock-solid defence is now the second-worse in the league, slightly better than bottom-placed Hertha Berlin, while last season's top striker Grafite has only netted five goals.

"We are all stunned. We lost the game today and of course we must discuss how we can improve this situation but I can definitely say that no decision has been taken," Wolfsburg sporting director Dieter Hoeness said.

"It is only normal that we sit down and analyse this situation," he added.

Arsenal dumped out of FA Cup by Stoke

Published>Mon, Jan 25 10 12:13 AM

Arsenal joined Manchester United and Liverpool on the FA Cup scrapheap on Sunday when Ricardo Fuller's double helped Stoke City to a 3-1 fourth round victory at the Britannia Stadium.

At least Arsenal, unlike United and Liverpool, fell to Premier League opposition, although it will still be a bitter pill for manager Arsene Wenger to swallow as the Gunners seek a first trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2005.

Arsenal, who included Sol Campbell in an otherwise inexperienced side after the 35-year-old's return to the club this week via Portsmouth and Notts County, never fully recovered from Fuller's second-minute opener. Despite an equaliser from Denilson just before the break, they were eventually overpowered.

"It was a good opportunity to win a trophy and we wanted to go through but I think we gave everything," Wenger, who made eight changes to the side that beat Bolton on Wednesday to briefly go top of the Premier League, told the BBC.

"It was a scrappy game but we made a mistake at 1-1 and got caught on a counter-attack. I had not much choice (with team selection) today. It's my responsibility to pick the team and I stand by that."

Stoke celebrated a first FA Cup win against Arsenal and with three of England's big four already licking their wounds they will fancy their chances of a long run in the competition.

Chelsea are now clear favourites to retain the Cup after they beat Preston North End 2-0 away on Saturday to book their place in the fifth round.

"I know he left players out today but they still had good players on the pitch," Stoke boss Tony Pulis said. "I don't care who it is in the next round but if we bring anybody to the Britannia I will be pleased."

Arsenal were shellshocked after two minutes when Stoke's throw-in specialist Rory Delap launched a delivery into the area which evaded the whole of the visiting defence and reached Fuller who headed past Lucasz Fabianski.

They got back on level terms just before halftime when Cesc Fabregas lined up a free kick but instead of shooting cut the ball back to Denilson whose low strike deflected into the net.

Wenger sent on his big guns Eduardo and Andrei Arshavin midway through the second half but they had little impact and the hosts went back in front 13 minutes from time when Mamady Sidibe galloped down the right wing before his inch-perfect chipped cross gave Fuller the simplest of headers.

Dean Whitehead made sure of Stoke's victory from Matthew Etherington's low cross.

Fourth round action concludes later on Sunday with Manchester City in action at Scunthorpe United.

Neureuther wins slalom to emulate father

Germany's Felix Neureuther reacts after winning the Alpine Skiing World Cup slalom race on the...

Published>Mon, Jan 25 10 12:09 AM

Germany's Felix Neureuther won his first World Cup victory on Sunday when he took the slalom at Kitzbuehel and emulated his father Christian, winner of the same race in 1979.

Neureuther won when Austria's Reinfried Herbst, the fastest man in the first leg, missed a gate when he was leading just over halfway down the second run.

To the despair of the home crowd, the Austrians, who failed to get on the podium for Saturday's downhill here, were again left without a top-three finish as Frenchman Julien Lizeroux took second place and Italy's Giuliano Razzoli was third.

Neureuther's previous best World Cup results were second-place finishes in slaloms at Garmisch and Alta Badia in 2007.

It was Germany's first World Cup men's win since 2005, when Alois Vogl won the slalom at Wengen, and was the first time a father and son had won at the same venue.

Neureuther can thank both his parents for his talent as his mother is Rosi Mittermaier, who was a double Olympic champion in Innsbruck in 1976.

"It's just unbelievable to get my first World Cup victory at a historic place like Kitzbuehel," the 25-year-old Neureuther told reporters. "It's hard to convey my emotions."

"I think I made a pretty smart race. Normally, I push too hard and make mistakes and go out. Today I was pushing at the right places and skiing smart at the right places."

With Austria still smarting from Saturday's failure, Herbst gave the crowd something to cheer about when he was fastest in the first run with a time of 48.54 seconds.

Neureuther, third in the first leg with 49.14, zoomed down the hill in 48.21 seconds on the second run to take the lead with a combined time of one minute 37.35.

Herbst, last to go, appeared set to give Austria their first win of the weekend when he passed the halfway mark with an advantage of nearly half a second over Neureuther.

However the Austrian lost his rhythm and skied out.

Former World Cup winner Bode Miller of the United States sat out the slalom after suffering a recurrence of an ankle injury.

Switzerland's Didier Cuche won the super-G here on Friday and Saturday's downhill.

Gill calls for free, fair and transparent elections of Hockey India

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 10:55 PM

New Delhi, Jan.24 (ANI): Union Minister Youth Affairs and Sports M.S.Gill on Sunday called for free, fair and transparent elections of Hockey India (HI), the apex body to oversee the game, after the postponement of its elections.

Gill expressed his views about various aspects of the game, as he formally inaugurated the renovated and spruced-up Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday (January 24).

"There are some issues in the High Court and I heard about the cases going on in Delhi and Rajasthan High Courts and the Sports Ministry's stance will be very clear before the court that we want to see the benefit of the game in the country and the players. Elections should be free, fair and transparent. We will accept whatever the court decides," Gill told reporters on the sidelines of the opening of Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

He also said that some democratically run state associations were left out of the electoral colleges leading to the current crisis.

"There are some state units like old Bombay, Madras, Punjab, Bengal etc which have been in existence for 70 to 80 years and it's not that they are not run democratically," said Gill.

The Sports Minister further added that the International Hockey Federation (FIH) has asked the Ministry to form a unified body for the game of hockey before the World Cup.

"The FIH (International Hockey Federation) told us that we conduct fair elections. I met FIH chief Leandro Negre and he told me that he had two demands, a unified body of men's and women's team and HI elections before the World Cup scheduled to commence on February 28. We also want free, fair and democratic Hockey India," added Gill.

It may be recalled that the elections to the Hockey India (HI) were postponed after certain affiliated state associations objected to the superseding the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF).

Further, there arose a sort of revolt over payment by the players of national side that is training for the ensuing World Cup to be staged in New Delhi.

The Hockey India elections, scheduled to be held on February 7, was once again deferred after the High Court in Rajasthan state issued a stay order on the formation of an ad-hoc body for the sport in the state.

The elections, postponed for the fourth time, comes after the Rajasthan Hockey Association moved the High Court on Friday (January 22) citing reasons that the Hockey India ignored the association and instead granted affiliation to an ad-hoc body under its 'one state, one body' policy.

The decision was taken at an urgent meeting of Hockey India members in New Delhi after returning officer G S Mander received the legal advice. (ANI)

Former skipper Pargat Singh slams Suresh Kalmadi for Indian hockey revolt

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 10:49 PM

New Delhi, Jan.24 (ANI): Former India hockey captain Pargat Singh on Sunday slammed the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President, Suresh Kalmadi, by blaming the latter for making attempts to occupy Hockey India (HI) chief's position.

Pargat blamed Kalmadi for the Indian hockey players' recent revolt and termed him a "sports mafia".

Pargat said that it was because of such sports mafia that players go to the extent of revolting against the federation.

"No player fancies a situation like a revolt but when you don't get the parental touch from the federation, you probably have no other way. Kalmadi has messed up Indian hockey and is playing dirty games," Pargat told media persons in the conference held at Delhi's Punjab Bhavan.

"People like him (Kalmadi) don't even bother about the country's image. Even if the World Cup is shifted out of the country, they would not bat an eyelid," said Pargat and appreciated former Hockey chief K.P.S. Gill for his term. (ANI)

Arsenal dumped out of FA Cup by Stoke

Published Sun, Jan 24 10 09:59 PM

Arsenal joined Manchester United and Liverpool on the FA Cup scrapheap on Sunday when Ricardo Fuller's double helped Stoke City to a 3-1 fourth round victory at the Britannia Stadium.

Fuller's opening goal in the second minute was trademark Stoke, the striker getting on the end of Rory Delap's huge throw-in.

Arsenal, who included the returning Sol Campbell, equalised shortly before halftime with a deflected strike from Denilson but Fuller restored Stoke's lead with 13 minutes remaining, wrong-footing Lucasz Fabianski with a close-range header after a superb run and cross by Mamady Sidibe.

Dean Whitehead made sure of Stoke's first FA Cup victory against Arsenal from Matthew Etherington's low cross.

Fourth round action concludes later on Sunday with Manchester City in action at Scunthorpe United.

Jeev signs off at tied 49 in Abu Dhabi

Published Sun, Jan 24 10 09:39 PM

Abu Dhabi, Jan 24 (PTI) Jeev Milkha Singh brought home an improved card of two-under 70 to finish five places up the rung at tied 49 after the final round of the Abu Dhabi Open golf tournament here today. The Chandigarh golfer sank four birdies against two bogeys to end with a four-day total of four-under 284, one stroke ahead of other Indian Shiv Kapur, who carded one-under 71 to sign off at tied 56. A 10th tee starter, Jeev opened with birdies on 10th and 11th hole and parred the rest to make the turn at two-under and on his resumption picked up two more birdies at the first and third hole but a couple of bogeys at the fifth and seventh hole pulled him back. Three-under at the turn, Shiv too struggled in his front nine as after sinking two more birdies at the first two holes, the Delhi pro first stumbled on a double bogey at the third and then dropped consecutive bogeys at the fifth and sixth hole to make things worse. At the top, German Martin Kaymer and Ian Poulter of England carded identical six-under 66 to sign off at the first and second place respectively, while Rory Mcilroy of Northern Ireland finished third.

Lakshman Singh scripts RCGC triumph

Published Sun, Jan 24 10 09:09 PM

Kolkata, Jan 24 (PTI) Asian Games gold medallist Lakshman Singh once again proved that he has the killer instinct when he brought the laurels, this time for his club - the Royal Calcutta Golf Club -- who annexed the inaugural Vodafone Royals Trophy at the RCGC course here today. Lakshman and his partner Aditya Khaitan tallied 38 stableford points for a two-round aggregate of 77 points to fight back from their overnight third place to emerge winners. Overnight joint-leaders Royal Perth Golf Club comprising of Bruce Shannahan and Francis James Bryant could garner only 34 points for a tournament total of 74 points to finish second. The husband-wife pair of Stephen and Margie Lilley representing the Royal Melbourne Golf Club finished third with 73 points. The other overnight joint-leaders Ravi and Binny Mehra of Royal Montreal Golf Club put up a dismal show and ended up 20th. The final round which was played on a scramble format saw the players enjoying themselves yet focussing on their targets. A member of the Indian team that bagged the Asian Games gold in 1982 had an able partner in Khaitan as the duo opened with solid pars on the first three holes before making a birdie on the fourth and making the only bogey of the round on the very next hole. One more birdie on the 15th sealed the issue in their favour. (More) PTI TAP SUS SHN

Comeback queen Henin seizes stage as Nadal, Murray advance

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 08:39 PM

Melbourne, Jan 24 (DPA) Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray played giant killers to eliminate the biggest serving pair in the game as Justine Henin continued to shine in her Grand Slam return Sunday at the Australian Open.

Second-seeded holder Nadal successfully negotiated the obstacle of Ivo Karlovic's giant delivery, taming the Croatian 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Murray reached his career-high showing at Melbourne Park as he defeated towering American John Isner 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 6-2.

Belgian Henin, back as an unseeded danger-woman after reversing a retirement to return to the tennis stage, defeated compatriot Yanina Wickmayer, a US Open semi-finalist, 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 6-3 rallying through into a quarter-final meeting with Nadia Petrova.

Russian outsider Petrova staged an upset with a fourth round win over third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3, 3-6, 6-1.

'It's a great feeling to be in the quarters,' said the seven-time Grand Slam winner. 'I enjoyed my time on the court. I was expecting a tough match. I'm glad I could come through.'

Maria Kirilenko advanced 5-4 as second seed Dinara Safina was unexpectedly haunted by the back pain which bothered her during 2009.

'It suddenly hit me, it was getting worse and worse,' said former number one Safina. 'I have no idea really how it could happen. It's really, really terrible.

'I have to go back to Germany to my doctor to speak with him. I just don't know what happened. It's shocking.'

Between them, Karlovic and Isner rained down 42 serves, but won a cumulative one set.

Nadal kept Karlovic in check over two and a half hours, firing 35 winners in comparison to 55 for the towering Croatian loser.

The Spaniard broke a minimal once per set while dropping his only serve in the second set. Surprisingly, the match did not feature a tiebreaker, a rarity in Karlovic matches where serve is everything.

'I knew how tough it would be, if he serves well you can do nothing' said Nadal, who beat Roger Federer in a five-set final a year ago. 'I focused all the time on moving well.

'A quarter-finals good for my confidence,' said the player whose last title came in Rome last May. 'It will be tough against Andy, but I'm here to try and win.

'I'll try to be aggressive with my forehand and keep him behind the baseline. Otherwise, I hope I will have a good flight home.'

Fifth seed Murray has finally passed the fourth round, where he stalled for two of the past three years. He showed maturity as he eased through in just over two hours despite 14 aces and 59 winners from the 2.05-metre American Isner.

'He's got one of the best serves in the game,' said Murray. 'But you have to get used to the height (from which the ball arrives).

'Obviously certain things are similar to playing Karlovic, whom I've played a few times. John doesn't really serve and volley much, he plays a bit more from the baseline. And he's got more variety on his serve.'

The Scot called the first set - where he saved a set point - the key to victory.

'It was very important. He may have been a bit tired, winning in Auckland (last week), having long matches and also playing doubles. I'm happy to go through.'

Croatian Marin Cilic eliminated US Open winner Juan Del Potro of Argentina, seeded fourth, 5-7, 6-4, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.

Hewitt hopes to end losing streak to Federer

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 08:19 PM

Melbourne, Jan 24 (DPA) After 14 consecutive losses to the man he admits is possibly the best to ever wield a racket, Lleyton Hewitt has just one strategy heading into his Monday fourth-round encounter with Roger Federer at the Australian Open.

'Win three sets before he does. That's what I'll be trying to do,' said the Australian who won his last meeting with the Swiss world number one seven long years ago in a Davis Cup semi-final at the Rod Laver arena.

Hewitt at least will have had his rest after playing for just 54 minutes in the third round before opponent Marcos Baghdatis retired with a shoulder injury.

'It's just a blessing that I didn't finish really late and have to bounce back from a tough five set match,' said Australia's 2005 finalist who won a set against the Swiss during a loss in their last meeting at the US Open four months ago.

'It's hard enough playing him when you're fresh.'

For Team Hewitt, nothing must change in the run-up to the showcase match. 'I'll do all the same preparation that I've been doing. Everything is going according to plan so far.

'He doesn't lose too many matches, especially big matches, and especially Grand Slams. You just got to look at his record last year in Grand Slams.

'It takes a great performance to beat him. That's why he's been the greatest player possibly ever, because he keeps putting himself in a position to keep winning Grand Slams.'

Federer is motoring again so far in Melbourne in search of his fourth title after losing the final a year ago to Rafael Nadal.

'It's an interesting draw again. There's no easy ways to a final or to a victory here. So you definitely gotta probably beat some of the best players in the world,' he said after a crushing victory over Alberto Montanes.

Hewitt, who booked Grand Slam titles nearly a decade ago at Wimbledon and the US Open, remains optimistic of upsetting the formbook if he can have a good day.

'You're gonna have to be ready for a challenge. You play for those moments, to play against the best players - and Roger is that.

'This is what motivates you. If you can't get up for these matches, you shouldn't be playing the game.'

Yasin Merchant pockets All India snooker trophy

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 08:09 PM

Chennai, Jan 24 (IANS) Veteran Yasin Merchant out-thought and outplayed young Aditya Mehta for a 6-1 win in the final of the Alumni Club All-India invitational snooker tournament here Sunday.

Bringing into play his vast experience, the 43-year-old Merchant, twice Asian champion, kept the 24-year-old Mehta on a tight leash with accurate safety play and won quite comfortably.

Mehta, winner of two tournaments in the city over the past few months, could not reproduce his best when it mattered and went down tamely.

In almost every frame, Mehta had early leads, but each time he missed sitters and Merchant was quick to punish these lapses by putting together frame-winning breaks.

That the match saw only two half-century breaks, a 55 by Merchant in the second frame and 54 by Mehta in the sixth, reflected the flow of the match that saw a lot of safety play.

Overall, it was a rather scrappy end to a tournament that did not witness even one century break despite the presence of country's top players among whom Geet Sethi took the highest break prize for his run of 96.

Merchant received a winner's cheque for Rs. 1 lakh while Mehta was richer by Rs 50,000.

'Aditya is the sort of player who if given freedom, will run away with the match. So, I had to keep it tight. He did not play well today, but if he was in top form, then I am sure he would have come out on top,' sad Merchant, ever the graceful winner.

On his part, Mehta said: 'I was nowhere near my best today and committed far too many mistakes. It is not that Yasin played especially well, but whatever he did, he made it count. I think, he deserved to win today.'

The results (final):

Yasin Merchant (Mah) bt Aditya Mehta (PSPB) 6-1 (86-51, 55-20, 73-40, 59-39, 75-34, 01-84, 54-17).

Gill opens Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 07:55 PM

New Delhi, Jan 24 (IANS) Sports Minister M.S.Gill Sunday opened the revamped Major Dhyan Chand National stadium, the first Commonwealth Games venue to be finished, and said other venues for the October mega event will be completed on time.

The remodelled stadium, which is scheduled to host the hockey World Cup Feb 28-March 13, is the first among the Commonwealth Games venues to be opened.

The stadium, revamped at a cost of Rs.262 crore, is spread over 36 acres, has three synthetic pitches, two conforming to international standards and the third a practice pitch. New polygrass turf has been laid on all the pitches which are equipped with new sprinkler systems.

The stadium has a sitting capacity of about 16,200 spectators. The second pitch outside the main arena has 900 permanent seats and a provision for 1,600 temporary seats.

'The facilities in the stadium are state-of-the-art. So much work has been done in the stadium that you can say it is almost new. It is one of the best hockey stadiums in the world,' Gill said.

The stadium was originally built in 1933 as an amphitheatre. It was renovated for first Asian Games held in 1951 and then for the 1982 Asian Games.

'The stadium has a rich legacy. It is synonymous with Indian hockey. It brings back memories of my childhood when I came here with my father from Meerut during the first Asian Games to see India play in the football finals. I remember Mewalal scoring a bicycle kick goal. Today, I recall those nostalgic moments,' Gill said.

Gill said the stadium could be completed on time because of the hard work of the engineers and the 2000 workers.

'When I first visited the stadium last year, it was in a mess with construction work going on and I wondered whether it could be completed on time. But the CPWD engineers, Sports Authority of India officials gave me assurance that it will be done on time.'

'It could be possible because of them and more importantly the 2000 people, who come from all over the counrty, and have worked day and night in this cold, to complete the work in one year,' Gill said amid loud applause from the guests and the workers.

'We got the hosting rights of the Commonwealth Games in 2003. I do not know what happened in five years, but since I came in 2008, I have visited the sites regularly. I have sat with the officials and made sure that the work is completed.'

'I can assure you that with the opening of this stadium, we have made a beginning and now you will see the venues will be completed one after another. Yes, we could have finished the work one year in advance, like they are doing in London, to get the facilities tested, but at least we can ensure that the venues will come up well before the Commonwealth Games.'

Gill used the opportunity to take a dig at the national sports federations.

'If you don't deserve to be there, then you should voluntarily and happily step aside,' Gill said while talking about the Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI) that has been newly elected following the doping mess.

'If you don't deserve to be there, then you should voluntarily and happily step aside,' Gill said while talking about the Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI) that has been newly elected following the doping mess.

India dominate on opening day of second test

Gautam Gambhir (L) and Virender Sehwag come off the field after the first day of...

Published Sun, Jan 24 10 07:29 PM

India pace bowler Ishant Sharma took four wickets to help reduce Bangladesh to 233 all out on the opening day of the second and final test on Sunday.

At the close, India were 69 without loss in reply with Virender Sehwag on 41 and Gautam Gambhir on 26.

Number eight batsman Mahmudullah smashed an unbeaten 96 to help Bangladesh recover from 127 for seven.

He was left strandedwhen off-spinner Harbhajan Singh ended Bangladesh's resistance by bowling last batsman Rubel Hossain for four.

Rubel survived 25 balls as he attempted to help Mahmudullah record a maiden test century.

Mahmudullah struck 13 fours in his 156-ball innings and also received solid support from number 10 batsman Shafiul Islam (9), who shared 55 runs in a ninth-wicket stand before giving Rahul Dravid a catch at second slip off Ishant.

Ishant (4-66) and fellow seamer Zaheer Khan (3-62) had earlier dismantled Bangladesh's batting line up after the hosts opted to bat first. Mohammad Ashraful was the only batsman to take the fight to India among the top order with 39.

"The first few hours were really helpful for the bowlers. The wicket was really very damp. And I think it was really a good toss to lose for us," said Ishant.

Mahmudullah said he had no regrets at missing out on his century.

"After Shakib got out, I tried to bat as long as possible and score as many runs as possible. I am not disappointed at all. Rather I am happy to contribute for my team," he said.

India lead the two-match series 1-0 after a 113-run win in Chittagong on Thursday.

India in command against Bangladesh on day one

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 07:09 PM

Dhaka, Jan 24 (IANS) Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan put India in a commanding position on day one of the second cricket Test against Bangladesh after the hosts were bowled out for 233 in the first innings at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium here Sunday.

On a pitch which is likely to assist spinners earlier than expected, Ishant (4-66) and Zaheer (3-62) made regular inroads into the Bangladesh batting order after the hosts decided to bat. Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, who came in place of leg-spinner Amit Mishra, chipped in with two wickets for 49 runs.

For Bangladesh, Mahmudullah stood tall amidst ruins with a splendid unbeaten 96. His 156-ball innings included 13 fours.

In reply, India were 69 for no loss from the day's remaining 13 overs with Gautam Gambhir batting at 26 and Virender Sehwag 41, when the stumps were drawn.

Nothing went well for Bangladesh, who had not even opened their account when they lost opener Imrul Kayes off the very first Ishant delivery in the second over.

Zaheer rattled Tamim Iqbal's bails in the next over and Bangladesh had lost both their openers for a mere four runs.

Ohja, introduced in the 13th over, got the prized wicket of Mohammad Ashraful. Ashraful, who had been in an woeful form, raced to a 31-ball 39 with six fours but came down the track against the spinner, missed the line only to be stumped by Dhoni.

Bangladesh were tottering at 84 for five at lunch, before skipper Shakib Al Hasan and wicket-keeper Mushfiqur Rahim looked poised to rescue the hosts. The two rustled up 55 runs for the sixth wicket when Rahim, who slammed his maiden century in the first Test, was trapped leg before by Ishant. He made 30 that came with the help of six fours.

With the hosts reeling at 106 for six, it was left to Mahmudullah and Shakib to make amends. Mahmudullah batted fluently and, with Shakib, kept the scoreboard ticking before the skipper, attempting to cut Zaheer, edged a catch to Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Shakib's 34 came off 67 balls and included four fours.

Shahadat Hossain bided some time at the crease with Mahmudullah, who brought up his half century in 71 balls with six fours, at the other end. But Hossain (8) was stumped by Ojha for his second wicket.

The last two wickets Shafiul Islam (9) and Rubel Hossain (4) added 78 runs with Mahmudullah but failed to stick for long.

Safina retires from Australian Open fourth round

Dinara Safina of Russia looks at her opponent Maria Kirilenko after retiring from their match...

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 06:49 PM

Second seed Dinara Safina was forced to retire from her fourth-round match against Russian compatriot Maria Kirilenko at the Australian Open on Sunday after she suffered a recurrence of a persistent back injury.

Safina was trailing 30-40 while serving at 4-5 in the first set when she went to hit a forehand, shook her head and told the umpire she could not continue.

A visibly upset world number two said at a post-match news conference, where she could barely move and was unable to sit comfortably, that the injury was the same as the one that forced her out of the season-ending WTA Championships in Doha last year.

"Exactly the same like in Doha. Exactly the same," she said. "I just cannot move anywhere.

"I mean, the physio asked me to lie on the table. I said, 'I cannot lie. I cannot make any movement'. Whatever I try to move, it hurts terribly."

Safina said she had felt a slight twinge while practising before Sunday's match but had been told by her doctor in Germany to expect some discomfort while playing.

"My doctor told me I could sometimes have some discomfort in that spot, as I had bone oedema, maybe I could not use full power," she said.

"Today I warmed up, it was fine. I was cooling down and I start to feel a little more pain.

"Suddenly I played a long game at 3-2. I won the game (but) I turned to my coach (Zeljko Krajan) and said: 'I cannot move any more.' My coach told me at 4-3 to retire. I'm like: 'Okay, I'm going to try'. But it's no way."

Safina admitted she might have done more damage to her back by continuing to play the match.

"You know, you always hope that it cannot get worse. If it would be the same, you think: 'Okay, like pain killer, whatever, it can help". You always hope. Now I see I did worse."

Safina, who said she could not even pack her own bags, will return to Germany to see her doctor when she can travel comfortably and said she did not know when she might be able to return to the WTA Tour.

Kirilenko will now meet China's Zheng Jie in the quarter-finals.

Pak Hockey players to get govt NOC for WC participation soon

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 06:39 PM

Pakistan's ministry of sports has started the process of giving a No Objection Certificate to the country's Hockey Federation for sending the national team to the World Cup in New Delhi starting February 28.

An official of the ministry said there was no chance of the government not clearing the team's trip to India in retaliation for the snub given to Pakistani cricketers at the Indian Premier League auction.

He said the NOC would include security and other clearances from the ministry of interior and foreign affairs. "Security of our players is not an issue for us since the World Cup is an international event managed by the International Hockey Federation who are responsible for security of all participating teams," the official said. Some former Test captains and Olympians had suggested not sending the hockey team to India as retaliation for the way Pakistani cricketers were embarrassed by the IPL franchises.

The ministry official said that the NOC would be processed soon since the PHF wants to send the team a few days before the tournament to help them acclimatise to conditions and also play a couple of practice game before its opening match on February 28 against India.

Rooney, Flintoff's investment to provide 50,000 pounds profit on "Avatar"

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 06:25 PM

London, Jan 24(ANI): British sports stars, including Wayne Rooney and Andrew Flintoff, will rake in a share of nearly 250 million pounds from the success of Avatar, the Hollywood blockbuster, as they had invested in a scheme that allowed them to cut their tax bill.

They joined a long list of cricketers, footballers, rock stars, television presenters and some MPs in funding a film partnership that ploughed almost 50 million pounds into the science-fiction epic.

All the stars now stand to make an average return of 50,000 pounds, having already earned thousands from a string of earlier hits.

These high profile investors were originally attracted to a film fund run by Ingenious Media, a London-based film finance company, four years ago as it enabled them to defer income tax and capital gains tax in return for backing British and US films.

They benefited from the tax relief irrespective of the success of the films.

"I'm delighted the film's going so well. I shall be going to see it when I get a break from campaigning. The government set up the tax arrangement to encourage investment in the British film industry and I responded to the opportunity," The Times quoted Andrew Mitchell, the shadow international development secretary, as saying.

Ingenious Media has backed a string of hits including X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Hairspray and Die Hard 4.0, and last year it made 25.6 million pounds in pre-tax profits.

It all fades in front of Avatar, the most expensive film ever made, where Ingenious and more than 2,000 of its investors are to share 248 million pound profit, in which half will be taken by the company and the rest is to be shared between investors. (ANI)

Number eight batsman Mahmudullah smashed an unbeaten 96 to help Bangladesh recover to make 233 after the tourists had ripped through the home team's top order.

The lower middle-order batsman was left stranded at the crease when off-spinner Harbhajan Singh ended Bangladesh's resistance by removing last batsman Rubel Hossain for four runs.

Henin overcomes wobble to reach quarter-finals

Belgium's Justine Henin hits a return against compatriot Yanina Wickmayer during the Australian Open tennis...

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 05:49 PM

Justine Henin's impressive comeback to grand slam action continued on Sunday with a 7-6 1-6 6-3 win over fellow Belgian Yanina Wickmayer to make the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

Henin, playing in only her second tournament since coming back from an 18-month retirement, kept calm when challenged and pounced when given a handful of chances to beat the dogged Wickmayer on Rod Laver Arena.

"That wasn't easy she played a great match she took the opportunities and played aggressively," Henin said in a courtside interview.

"It's just a special feeling to be back."

The win sets up a last eight meeting with Nadia Petrova, who earlier dumped third seed and fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova out in three sets.

Henin has a 12-2 record over 19th-ranked Petrova and defeated the Russian in her first match back to professional tennis at the Brisbane International in the lead-up to Melbourne Park.

Petrova, who also ended Kim Clijsters title ambitions with a 6-0 6-1 thrashing in the third round, will be riding high in confidence, however, and is likely to test Henin's fitness.

Henin, who has played three tough three-set matches in a row, appeared in discomfort at times against Wickmayer and hobbled back to the baseline after a nasty stumble during the last set.

But there is doubting the Belgian's cool head and it was again on display at critical moments.

Serving to stay in the first set at 6-5 down, she saved three set points to force a tiebreaker, then pounced with three consecutive winners to seal it.

She then refused to get rattled after stumbling in the second, and broke Wickmayer early in the third before calmly riding out to victory, matching the best performance by a wild card in the tournament.

Henin is bidding for her second grand slam victory after beating fellow Belgian Clijsters for the 2004 title.

Debt-ridden Man U swaps hot meals for packed lunches

Published>Sun, Jan 24 10 04:49 PM

London, Jan 24(ANI): Debt-ridden Manchester United has discontinued free hot meals and soft drinks to their loyal workers' on match days as part of their cost cutting measures.

The Old Trafford workers now have to settle for a sarnie and tap water, and have been told that they would have to pay three pounds for match programmes, which they used to get for free.

"Everything at the club is now about how we can save money. Over the past year staff have noticed the penny pinching," News of the World quoted a United insider, as saying.

"On match days we used to be given a meal from the kitchens and allowed soft drinks from the bars but that has now been stopped. Now we are only allowed tap water and a packed lunch of a sandwich, fruit and a sugary snack," the insider added.

Earlier, it was revealed that the debts of Manchester United's parent company, the Red Football Joint Venture Ltd, had swollen from 699 million pounds to 716.5 million pounds.

Several workers have also voiced strong discontent over the club's methods to try and save money on lower-paid staff.

"It's stupid because the kitchens throw out huge amounts of uneaten food every weekend. Staff were also allowed to take home match programmes, but now they have to be surrendered," the insider said.

"We were often allowed to keep some of the hospitality gifts people left behind like cufflinks, mugs and pens. Again they have to be surrendered and are all used again. Everyone who works for the club is a Manchester United fan and we all worry about what is happening to the club," insider added. (ANI)
