Cook, Trott record partnership humiliates Oz as England draw Ashes opener

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 01:22 PM

Brisbane, Nov 29(ANI): England opening batsman Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott set a series of records on day five of the first Test of the Ashes series in Brisbane, as the match finished in an expected draw on Monday.

Cook hit a career-best 235 not out, while Trott made an unbeaten 135, as merciless England declared the second innings at a record 517-1 from 152 overs at the Gabba.

Set 297 to win from 41 overs, Australia eased their way to 107-1 from 26 overs before both captains agreed to end the match 15 overs early, the BBC reports.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting was unbeaten on 51 with opening batsman Shane Watson on 41.

Cook's double century was the sixth best Ashes score by an Englishman, and he also surpassed Sir Don Bradman for the highest score at the Gabba.

Cook and Trott's unbeaten 329 run stand for the second wicket was the ninth highest England partnership in history.

It was also the best partnership for England for any wicket in Australia, beating the 323 by Jack Hobbs and Wilfred Rhodes at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 1911-12.

The match also saw England's highest second-innings total in a Test match in Australia.

England's fightback with the bat came after Australia took a handsome 221-run advantage on the first innings.

It's the first time Australia has failed to win at the Gabba since 2003, as it seeks to regain the Ashes following last year's 2-1 loss in England.

The second match of the five-Test match series will be held in Adelaide from December 3.

Brief Scorecard:

England: Ist Innings:- 260 (Bell 76, Cook 67, Siddle 6-54)

Australia: Ist Innings:- 481 (Hussey 195, Haddin 136, Finn 6-125)

England: Second Innings:- 517-1 declared (Cook 235 not out, Trott 135 not out)

Australia: Second Innings:- 107-1 (Ponting 51 not out) (ANI)

Zulqarnain's family receive threats following bid to blow lid on corruption in Pak cricket

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 12:36 PM

Karachi, Nov 29(ANI): Former Pakistan wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider's family has reportedly received threatening calls after the player said that he would expose people involved in corruption in Pakistan cricket.

"Zulqarnain's wife got three calls today, two from an unknown number and one from a number in Greece in which the caller speaking in Urdu threatened her of dire consequences if Zulqarnain said anything about anyone," The News quoted Aqeel Haider, the player's brother, as saying.

He said that the calls came after Zulqarnain wrote on his Facebook page that he would soon expose people who had taken bribes.

"All these people who are saying negative things about me...they should wait for five more days then I will show them my background and status. After five days I will show them their background and place and also those who don't take money and those who have taken money," Haider wrote on the social-networking site.

Haider had fled to London after allegedly receiving death threats from match-fixers when he was in Dubai for the ODI series between Pakistan and South Africa.

The 24-year-old is apparently miffed by negative remarks about him by Pakistan's ODI captain Shahid Afridi, manager Intikhab Alam and the PCB legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi.

Zulqarnain was a squad member of the recent Pakistan tour of England, which degenerated into chaos when Test captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were suspended over spot-fixing allegations. (ANI)

Russia banks on Putin's powers of persuasion in 2018 bid

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 12:28 PM

Russia will draw on Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's powers of persuasion to try to lure the 2018 World Cup to the world's largest country for the first time.

Putin was largely responsible for Sochi's successful bid to win the right to host the 2014 Winter Olympics when he travelled, as Russia's president, to Guatemala in 2007 to meet members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

"(Putin) has already done a great deal to help our bid," Russian Sports Minister and bid chairman Vitaly Mutko, who also sits on FIFA's executive board, told Reuters in a recent interview.

One of Russia's strongest points is full government backing, with both Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev throwing their weight behind the bid.

Earlier this year, Putin personally signed all the government guarantees, then promised to drop entry-visa requirements for players, officials and fans with valid tickets.

However, Mutko, a close friend of Putin, did not reveal if the Prime Minister would go to Zurich for Thursday's vote to make his pledge in person.

"All (Putin's) plans have been kept secret up to now but of course we're all hoping he'll be there," Mutko said.

A year ago, just a few steps from Red Square with the Kremlin walls in the background, Mutko revealed an ambitious bid to bring the world's greatest sporting event to a country which spans 11 time zones from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean, for the first time.

The plan calls for the use of 13 host cities with a total of 16 stadiums in four geographical clusters -- with four stadiums in or near the capital Moscow alone.

That plan could see fans travelling distances of more than 3,000 kilometres from Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad in the west to the most eastern location, Yekaterinburg on the Europe-Asia border in the Urals.

TRANSFER CHALLENGES

FIFA has cited Russia's enormous size as its main drawback.

"The country's vastness and its remoteness from other countries...would put pressure on the air traffic infrastructure, potentially causing transfer challenges in view of the lack of alternative means of long-distance transport," the world governing body said in its technical report issued last week.

Mutko conceded Russia's size was a concern for FIFA, but said all challenges would be met.

"We have our minuses, just like all the other candidates. Our risk zones are the (insufficient) infrastructure, transport and (lack of modern) hotels and airports," he said.

"But Russia is a dynamic country with huge economic potential and no one should have any doubt that everything would be built on time."

Russia also has to battle against a negative impression about racism among the country's fans.

There have been a number of high-profile incidents widely reported around Europe over the last year or so, and Alexei Sorokin, the bid's chief executive, did not help the cause by criticising England's bid in October.

That required a personal apology to England's officials, while FIFA took a dim view of the incident.

Despite those blemishes, the Russia bid is believed to be strong, with bookmakers making it the favourite ahead of England, Spain/Portugal and Netherlands/Belgium.

Cook hits double century before England declare

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 12:06 PM

England declared with a lead of 296 on the back of a record 329 stand between Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott and had reduced Australia to 11 for one at tea on the final day of the first Ashes test on Monday.

Cook was unbeaten on a career-high 235 with Jonathan Trott 135 not out when skipper Andrew Strauss declared at 517-1 three quarters of an hour before the break, bringing an end to an astonishing innings and to Australia's suffering in the field.

Simon Katich lasted just 23 minutes before England succeeded where Australia's bowlers had failed all day, the opener caught by Strauss in the slips off the bowling of Stuart Broad for four runs.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting (6) and opener Shane Watson, who had yet to score, will have to face a maximum of 34 more overs.

Although the match looked to be heading for a draw, England will take a huge confidence boost into the next test in Adelaide later this week after saving a match they looked to have lost after Australia's first innings.

Cook and Trott completely dominated the day in front of a sparse crowd at the Gabba, where England supporters were more numerous and louder.

Their partnership was the highest by English batsmen in Australia, beating the 323 achieved by Jack Hobbs and Wilfred Rhodes on the 1911/12 Ashes tour.

The "Barmy Army" were at their noisiest just before lunch when the 25-year-old Cook clipped the ball behind square to become the fourth England player to score an Ashes double century in Australia.

They were back on their feet minutes later when Trott pushed a shot through leg side and scuttled for three runs, leaping into the air in jubilation as he raced to safety and his fourth test century.

Australia's bowlers continued to struggle in the baking sunshine with the one cast-iron chance they had of separating the England batsman before lunch spilled in the slips.

All rounder Watson, the pick of Australia's bowlers, carved out the opportunity when Trott was on 75 but Michael Clarke could not hold on to a simple catch.

Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson's troubles continued as he ended the test wicketless at the cost of 170 runs.

One wretched delivery to Trott hurtled some three metres wide of the wicket in echoes of England bowler Steve Harmison's first delivery here four years ago that set the tone for England's 5-0 series defeat.

World Cup candidates face decisive final week

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 11:46 AM

The race to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups is still considered to be wide open as it enters the final week having survived a corruption scandal which threatened to derail the whole process.

Voting is restricted to members of FIFA's executive committee and bidders believe many are still undecided. Even the number of voters taking part on Dec. 2 is uncertain after two of the 24-man committee were suspended and FIFA still has to decide on a last-minute request to replace one of them.

FIFA has prepared painstaking reports on the technical and financial attributes of each bid, but Sepp Blatter, president of soccer's governing body, appreciates personal whims could hold more sway than the quality of the bids themselves.

"It wouldn't be worth making technical reports if finally those who are going to vote are not using the information of such reports," he said.

"But we are not only dealing with the World Cup institution, we are also dealing with human beings, and they have ideas other than those which are available in the documents."

There are four bids for the 2018 tournament from England, Russia, Spain/Portugal and Netherlands/Belgium and five for 2022 -- United States, Japan, South Korea, Qatar and Australia.

Of those, Russia, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Qatar and Australia have never staged soccer's biggest event.

LAST-MINUTE LOBBYING

The contest began in earnest on Jan. 15 2009, when FIFA launched its invitation to bid but, after nearly two years of lobbying, many feel the last few days could be decisive.

"I'd like to think it's still open. Maybe there are some people who haven't made up their minds, I would like to think the game will be settled in the very last minute," a source close to one of the bids told Reuters.

Andy Anson, CEO of England's bid, was also in the dark.

"No-one knows which way the vote is going to go, and no-one can know, whatever they tell you," he said.

"We are confident that our bid will be successful based on what executive committee members have told us -- but you never know what might happen on the day they vote."

With Brazil awarded the 2014 tournament unopposed, it is 10 years since FIFA last held a genuine contest for World Cup hosting, when Germany edged South Africa for the 2006 event in controversial circumstances.

But recent experiences with the Olympic Games show that last-minute lobbying can tip the balance between bids.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is largely credited with having won London the right to stage the 2012 Games at the expense of Paris while the influence of then Russian President Vladimir Putin's influence was seen as crucial in helping rank outsider Sochi win the 2014 Winter Olympics.

MEMBERS SUSPENDED

Following this lead, England are sending a delegation to Zurich led by Prime Minister David Cameron and including heir to the throne, Prince William.

Putin has taken an active part in the Russian campaign, although they would not confirm whether the Russian Prime Minister would travel to Zurich, and former president Bill Clinton will be with the U.S. delegation as honorary president of the bid.

The process has already been hit by controversy with two executive committee members -- Reynald Temarii of Tahiti and Amos Adamu of Nigeria -- suspended following an investigation into allegations they offered to sell their votes to undercover newspaper reporters.

Temarii, who as Oceania Football Confederation's only voter had been expected to back Australia, was found guilty of breaking general rules of ethics, while Adamu was found guilty of bribery.

On Saturday, the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) said they would ask FIFA if Temarii could be replaced.

The last competitive vote in 2000 ended in controversy when New Zealand's Charles Dempsey, who had been instructed by the Oceania confederation to vote for South Africa, instead abstained in the final round and Germany won by 12 votes to 11.

If the late Dempsey, who said he was in a "no-win" situation, had voted as instructed, the result would have been tied and Blatter would have had the casting vote.

This time, it could be equally close.

Federer thanks Annacone for return to form

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 11:06 AM

Even Roger Federer can suffer a crisis of confidence and the Swiss was quick to thank his new coach for restoring his after capping a vintage week at the ATP World Tour Finals on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Swiss played some of the best tennis of 2010 as he roared through to the final against world number one Rafael Nadal without dropping a set and he was at his flamboyant best again to beat the Spaniard 6-3 3-6 6-1.

Rewind back a few months, however, and there were those who thought Federer's aura had gone for for good.

Defeat by Robin Soderling at the French Open ended his incredible sequence of 23 consecutive appearances in the semi-finals of grand slam tournaments and he suffered another quarter-final loss to Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon.

In between those two shocks he was beaten by Lleyton Hewitt on the grass courts of Halle -- his first loss there since 2002 and against a player who he had beaten 15 times in a row.

Drastic action was needed and Federer turned to American coach Paul Annacone, formerly with Pete Sampras, to compliment the work he was doing with fellow Swiss Severin Luthi.

SIX FINALS

It appears to have worked as Federer, who has often gone it alone without a full-time coach, has reached six finals and compiled a 35-4 record.

"First of all, I had to regain some confidence," Federer told reporters after only his second win in two and half years over nine-times grand slam champion Nadal.

"That only comes through winning matches. After having somewhat of a disappointing clay season, Halle, Wimbledon stretch, where I wasn't able to win any tournaments and didn't play my best tennis, played a bit passive, it was important that I was able to pick up my game.

"I started moving better, started feeling well physically and mentally. I'm sure Paul has helped in this regard. So has Severin. He's helped as well over the last few years.

"That's why I'm very happy with my team at this stage of the season. I can obviously thank them for great work. It's through their hard work and my condition trainer, my physio, my wife and kids and everybody.

"It's been intense at times but it seems like we made many right decisions towards the end of the season. My body was able to cope with a lot of playing I did. I've played five tournaments in seven weeks but I feel very happy right now."

While Nadal has been the outstanding player this season, winning the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, Federer underlined just how important it was for him to win the year-ending title for a record-equalling fifth time.

In a tournament featuring the world's top eight players he won five matches, dropping just one set in the process.

"I'm really thrilled the way I played all week," he said. "To win a fifth time is obviously amazing, for the third time in a different place after Houston and Shanghai.

"I'm just really happy the way I was able to finish the season in style, really saving the best for last.

"Today was another great match with some fantastic rallies. I know it doesn't take anything away from Rafa's great season, because it was magnificent.

Impressive Federer sends Nadal timely reminder

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 10:48 AM

Roger Federer sent a timely reminder to Rafael Nadal on Sunday, out-gunning the year's dominant player to win the ATP World Tour Finals with an irresistible barrage of attacking tennis.

Federer, overshadowed this season by the phenomenal Nadal, won 6-3 3-6 6-1 in front of 17,500 fans at London's O2 Arena for a record-equalling fifth title at the year-ending finale to match the feat of Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras.

Nadal, who won this year's French, Wimbledon and U.S. Open titles to knock Federer off the top of the rankings, lacked his usual intensity after an epic semi-final against Andy Murray and the Swiss seized his chance to lay down a marker for next year.

Thirty-two winners flew from Federer's racket in the one hour 37 minute contest as he got the better of the Spaniard for only the second time in two and half years.

Nadal now leads 14-8 in their series dating back to 2004 but Federer's form since his shock defeat by Tomas Berdych at Wimbledon suggests the 24-year-old will find the Swiss blocking his path to more grand slam glory in 2011.

In completing the round-robin tournament undefeated Federer also added $1.6 million to his bank balance, although notching another win over a player who is threatening his "greatest of all time" tag, was reward enough.

"I'm just really happy the way I was able to finish the season in style, playing some of my best tennis," Federer, who won his 16th grand slam title at this year's Australian Open, told reporters.

"Then obviously beating Rafa in the final makes it extra special because of the year he's had."

Federer roared with delight as he looped a forehand flush on to the baseline before a resigned Nadal, who declined to challenge the call, walked to the net to congratulate him.

The Spaniard never takes losing lightly but considering how far he has come since leaving London 12 months ago with three defeats and serious questions about his form and fitness, he was clearly not too despondent at playing second fiddle.

"This has been a fantastic year and probably my most emotional," Nadal, who ended an 11-month title drought in Monte Carlo in April and from then was almost unstoppable, said on court.

"But when's Roger's playing like this it's very difficult to stop him."

TOP TWO

For the time since 1986 the world's top two players in the ATP rankings contested the final match of the season -- a fitting end to a tournament that attracted 250,000 fans over eight days in London's Docklands.

Though the match lacked the drama of their most recent one in London -- Nadal's unforgettable 2008 Wimbledon final defeat of Federer -- it still provided riveting entertainment for a sell-out crowd as both players tried to wrestle the initiative.

Nadal had the first sniff of a chance at 3-3 when he had Federer down 0-30 on serve but he was helpless as the Swiss nonchalantly reeled off four perfect points.

In the next game, Federer earned a break point with a forehand winner and converted it when he rolled a backhand beyond the reach of Nadal.

In the blink of an eye, the Federer had moved a set ahead but Nadal, playing in the final of the season-ender for the first time, levelled the match after breaking Federer's serve for the first time in the fourth game of the second set.

That was some feat as Federer lost just 13 points on his delivery throughout the match.

Federer struck the decisive blow to move 3-1 ahead in the decider when Nadal hit a tired-looking backhand wide.

Dredging up his remaining reserves of energy, Nadal got to deuce on the next game but Federer slammed the door shut with an ace to move 4-1 ahead and there was no way back for the Mallorcan after that.

Cook hits double century as England turn the screw

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 09:48 AM

Alastair Cook grabbed his first test double century just before lunch as England continued to grind down Australia's toiling bowlers on the final day of a first Ashes test now looking destined for a draw.

Cook, unbeaten on a career-high 201, and Jonathan Trott, who had just reached his own century on 100 not out, had put on 251 for the fourth wicket to drive England to 439-1 at lunch, a lead of 218 runs.

Their highly disciplined stand bettered the 188 Cook put on with skipper Andrew Strauss (110) on Sunday to become the best England partnership in test cricket at the Gabba.

England's "Barmy Army" supporters were at their noisiest just before the break when the 25-year-old Cook clipped the ball behind square to become the fourth England player to score a double century against Australia.

They were back on their feet minutes later when Trott pushed a shot through leg side and scuttled for three runs, leaping into the air in jubilation as he raced to safety and his fourth test century.

Australia's bowlers continued to struggle in front of a small crowd basking in the Brisbane sun with the one cast-iron chance they had of separating the England batsman spilled in the slips.

All rounder Shane Watson, the pick of Australia's bowlers, carved out the opportunity when Trott was on 75 but Michael Clarke could not hold on to a simple catch.

Fast bowler Mitchell Johnson's troubles continued as he continued to go wicketless through the test at the cost of 152 runs.

One wretched delivery to Trott hurtled some three metres wide of the wicket in echoes of England bowler Steve Harmison's first delivery here four years ago that set the tone for England's 5-0 series defeat.

Cook hits double century as England reaches 439-1

Mon, Nov 29 10 08:06 AM

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) Alastair Cook hit an unbeaten double century and Jonathan Trott brought up his hundred as England's took its second innings to 439-1 at lunch Monday on the final day to continue its dominance of the first Ashes test against Australia. Cook was 201 not out with Trott on 100 at the break as England took a 218-runs lead over Australia. Cook became just the fourth Englishman to score a double century in Australia, following R.E. Foster, Wally Hammond and Paul Collingwood. Cook and Trott's second-wicket partnership of 251 is also a record for England at the Gabba, breaking Cook and Andrew Strauss' 188-run first-wicket stand Sunday. Australia's misery was compounded when Michael Clarke dropped Trott while on 75 at slip off the bowling of Shane Watson.

Federer beats Nadal to win fifth year-end title

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 01:56 AM

London, Nov 29 (DPA) Roger Federer overcame Rafael Nadal 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 Sunday to win the fifth year-end title of his career with victory in the final of the ATP World Tour Finals.

The Swiss with a record 16 Grand Slam titles clocked his 66th career trophy and his eighth win against 14 defeats by Nadal. He has claimed fifth titles this season, three from his last four events.

'I've really enjoyed playing this week,' said the Swiss. 'I hope I didn't spoil Rafa's vacation, he's had a dream year, it was very special for him.'

The indoor surface has been the perfect compliment all week for Federer's game, with the Swiss world number two now 3-0 against Nadal indoors, his previous wins coming in Shanghai at the year-end event in 2006 and 2007.

The all-star pair have won 21 of the last 23 Grand Slams (12 for Federer, nine for Nadal). They have held a stranglehold on the year-end top ranking for the past seven years and both entered the final undefeated on the week.

It was the first final at the year-end championship between number one and number two since Ivan Lendl and Boris Becker 24 years ago.

Federer added $1.63 million to his career earnings as he finished the season with a 65-13 record and trophies in three of his last four events of 2010 after winning the Australian Open and Cincinnati.

'Roger played well all the week,' said Nadal, winner of the last three Grand Slams after Federer's Australian Open title in January. 'It's been a great season for me - certainly the most emotional of my career.

'Roger was too good today. I'm glad I could show I can play on this court,' said the loser of all three group matches in 2009. 'I want to come back and play even better next year.'

The first ten points of the match went with the server, with Federer's first game lasting exactly one minute. He caught Nadal, who worked for three hours Saturday to beat Andy Murray in the semis, with a sizzling backhand cross-court winner on his way to the only break of the opening set for 5-3.

A game later, the opener was in the Federer pocket after 32 minutes. But the Swiss dropped serve for the first time in the second set, saving a break point but sending a forehand return wide on a second to trail 1-3 midway through the second.

Nadal levelled at a set each five games later to throw the contest into a deciding chapter.

The Swiss preyed on the tiring Spaniard, who held a winning point in the fourth game but lost serve on a one-two pair of errors as Federer crept to 3-1. The Swiss consolidated smoothly, sending down his sixth ace for a 4-1 lead.

Federer ended the season in winning style against the fading Spaniard, who netted a fatigued backhand to go down a double break, 1-5. Federer finished off victory in just over 90 minutes to put his season to bed and head into 2011 with a huge psychological edge in the rivalry.

FIFA could allow Temarii replacement, say Australia

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 12:26 AM

FIFA may allow Oceania to replace the suspended Reynald Temarii on the executive committee which will choose the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosts on Thursday, one of the bidding nations said on Sunday.

FIFA itself has not commented on Oceania's request to be represented on the executive committee but Frank Lowy, head of Australia's bid for 2022, said he understood the sport's world ruling body would agree to it.

FIFA's executive committee is currently reduced to 22 members following the suspension of Temarii and Nigeria's Amos Adamu, who have been banned for one and three years respectively following an investigation into allegations made by a British newspaper.

"I hear that maybe there will be 23 voters," Lowy told Reuters on Sunday. "I haven't had it confirmed, but I hear it will be 23.

"I can't quite tell you exactly where I heard if from," he added.

Tahiti's Temarii, president of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), was the region's only representative on the executive committee until he was suspended from all football-related activity this month.

FIFA found he had breached general rules of ethics and loyalty.

Temarii would need to drop an appeal against the punishment and resign his post before Oceania could replace him, although there has been no official indication of whether he will do this.

The OFC met in Auckland on Saturday and said it believed it had the right a replace Temarii for the remainder of his term.

The OFC's acting president David Chung, from Papua New Guinea, would be first in line to replace Temarii.

England, Russia, Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands are bidding to host the 2018 World Cup with Japan, South Korea, Australia, Qatar and United States the candidates for 2022.

Kaymer joins European greats

Published>Mon, Nov 29 10 12:10 AM

Martin Kaymer joined the greats of European golf by winning the money-list crown on the final day of the season at the Dubai World Championship on Sunday.

The German landed a prize of $1.5 million for topping the Race to Dubai after he and second-placed Briton Graeme McDowell ended in a tie for 13th place at the Greg Norman-designed Earth course on another hot and steamy day in the desert.

"I am very proud of my year," Kaymer told reporters after a final-round 72 gave him a six-under tally of 282, eight strokes adrift of tournament winner Robert Karlsson of Sweden. "It's been a fantastic year.

"All the goals I set for myself happened -- to win the Race to Dubai, to play in and win the Ryder Cup and to win a major (U.S. PGA Championship)."

Kaymer, who also triumphed at the Abu Dhabi Championship, Dutch Open and the Dunhill Links event in a spectacular season laden with trophies, said he would now chase another first in 2011.

"I have never made a hole-in-one in my life so that would be nice," he explained after collecting an additional $113,000 for his 13th place in the Dubai World Championship.

"It would also be nice to win another major, preferably the British Open, the only major that we have in Europe."

World number three Kaymer would also like to climb the rankings.

WORLD NO 1

"I believe that one day I can become the number one in the world. I know I can do it," he said after emulating fellow countryman Bernhard Langer who finished the 1981 and 1984 seasons as European number one.

Other previous money-list winners include Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Ernie Els, Colin Montgomerie and last year's number one Lee Westwood.

McDowell has played a tough five successive weeks in Spain, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and Dubai in a bid to catch Kaymer at the top and he was proud to have taken the Race to Dubai to the wire.

"To give Martin a run for his money this week was very good," said the 31-year-old Northern Irishman after his closing 68. "I am proud of the way I played the last five weeks.

"Things didn't really go my way this week. It's a golf course which frustrated me last year and continues to frustrate me.

"I couldn't see the lines (on the greens) and hole the putts. You're not going to do any damage out there without putting well," added McDowell, winner of this season's U.S. Open, Wales Open and Andalucia Masters.

Haider to reveal corrupt; family gets threatening calls

Sun, Nov 28 10 11:22 PM

Karachi, Nov 28 (PTI) In what could bring more trouble for Pakistan cricket, stumper Zulqarnain Haider today said he will reveal the identity of the people, who took bribes while being the country''s cricket set-up. Soon after his announcement on the Facebook page, his family filed a police complaint as his wife got threatening calls from an unknown caller. Haider had fled to London after allegedly receiving death threats from match-fixers when he was in Dubai for an ODI series against South Africa and retired from international cricket in a hush. Haider is apparently miffed by negative remarks about him by Pakistan''s one-day captain Shahid Afridi, manager Intikhab Alam and the PCB legal advisor Tafazzul Rizvi. He today wrote on his Facebook page that all those who were talking negative about him should wait for five more days and he will expose them. Zulqarnain had earlier on his MSM page declared he would soon be in Islamabad. "I will soon let the people know the background of some people and about those who take or had taken money," he wrote on the social-networking site. His wife started getting the calls soon after the message was posted and spread through media. "The caller speaking in Urdu warned her that if her husband uttered a word about anyone the family would disappear," Aqeel, Haider''s brother said. He said one call had come from a number traced to Greece while two others came from unknown locations. "My father has filed a police complaint because we are taking these calls very seriously and we are worried about our safety, we have asked for police protection," he added. Haider is facing an inquiry from the PCB, which is clearly unhappy with his act of leaving the team without informing the team management during the series in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The wicketkeeper has claimed he took the extreme decision because he was under threat from some people who wanted him to get involved in fixing matches but he refused the offer. Alam, who heads a three member PCB fact-finding committee to look into the circumstances leading to Zulqarnain''s flight from Dubai, is due to submit his report by tomorrow. He told the media on Saturday that although Pakistan had a good series with South Africa but the Haider incident was a big shock for everyone and came out of the blue. "It was something that had never happened before and my contention is that even if he had got threats he should have at least spoken to us and sought our guidance and help," Intikhab said.

Bhupathi-Mirnyi end runners-up at World Tour Finals

Sun, Nov 28 10 11:08 PM

London, Nov 28 (PTI) The season-ending championship title eluded Mahesh Bhupathi yet again as the Indian Davis Cupper and his partner Max Mirnyi lost the summit clash of the World Tour Finals to Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic here today. The third seed Bhupathi-Mirny player lost the close championship match 6-7 (6), 4-6 to the second seed Canadian-Serbian combination in one hour and 21 minutes. Bhupathi and Mirnyi, who came into the prestigious tournament after winning the Paris Masters, had reached the final for the first time together. Bhupathi had earlier ended runners-up at the Tour Finals in 1997, 1999 and 2000 with Leander Paes. He had qualified for the elite eight-team competition with Mirnyi in 2003 and 2004 but could never crossed the group stage. Bhupathi and Mirnyi would have liked to end their partnership with year-end championship victory. Bhupathi has announced he will yet again team up with Paes for the initial part of the 2011 season while Mirnyi will pair with Nestor. They had reunited for the 2010 season for the first time since 2004. They reached five finals, including four ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event and won the lone title in Paris. In the final today, Bhupathi and Mirnyi had two break chances in the opening set but could convert none and that cost them as they went to concede the lead by losing the tie-breaker. Nestor and Zimonjic though did not miss out on their chance as they broke Bhupathi and Mirnyi in one of the two chances in the second set and maintained the lead to pocket the title.

Stankovic hits three in Inter's "mad" 5-2 win

Published>Sun, Nov 28 10 10:46 PM

Midfielder Dejan Stankovic set alight a freezing San Siro with his first three goals of the Serie A season in Inter Milan's remarkable 5-2 win over Parma on Sunday, their first league victory in a month.

The champions have struggled this term with injuries and form but after Wednesday's Champions League victory over Twente Enschede, the pressure on coach Rafael Benitez was further eased by a battling if fortunate win which sent his side up to fifth.

"It was a mad game," Benitez told Sky. "We can still aim for the scudetto, the championship still has a long way to run."

Inter now trail leaders AC Milan by seven points after their city rivals drew 1-1 at Sampdoria on Saturday, but second-placed Lazio failed to take advantage with influential Brazilian midfielder Hernanes rifling in to grab a 1-1 draw with Catania.

Lazio, three points behind Milan, host Inter on Friday.

Juventus, who were held 1-1 by Fiorentina on Saturday, stayed third after Napoli went down 3-1 at Udinese where Naples-born Antonio Di Natale refused to celebrate after hitting his second hat-trick of the campaign.

Last term's Serie A top scorer netted a penalty, a superb swerving long range effort and directly from a corner after an error by Marek Hamsik, who went straight up the other end to fire in a consolation before missing his own spotkick.

AS Roma can go above Juve with a win at Palermo at 1945 GMT.

Bari stayed bottom after 14 games following a 1-1 draw with promoted Cesena while Cagliari beat struggling Lecce 3-2.

Bologna, awaiting a possible points deduction for financial irregularities, tried to get their game with Chievo on but heavy snowfall meant the match was postponed just before kickoff.

COLD WEATHER

Snow also hit Brescia but their 0-0 draw with Genoa went ahead after a short stoppage to paint the lines red.

Northern Italy's cold weather, the unpopular new midday kick off and Inter's recent woes contributed to a low San Siro crowd.

Home ultras also came late in protest at the government's imposition of electronic supporter cards to track hooligans and most missed ex-Inter striker Hernan Crespo's opener for Parma when he flicked in at the near post after just four minutes.

Serbia's Stankovic equalised on 18 minutes when his shot from just outside the box took a wicked deflection and moments later he performed exactly the same trick to put Inter ahead.

Four minutes later Esteban Cambiasso stabbed in after Jonathan Biabiany headed on a corner from Wesley Sneijder, who looked almost back to his best before suffering a knock.

Crespo pulled one back on 36 minutes after Marco Materazzi's mistake and Parma could easily have equalised in the second half with Angelo hitting the post before fit-again Thiago Motta and Stankovic settled matters with powerful strikes inside the area.

Tharoor exudes hope IPL Kochi will be a reality

Sun, Nov 28 10 08:52 PM

Kozhikode, Nov 28 (PTI) Former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor is hoping that the Kochi IPL team will be able to compete in the fourth edition, following the BCCI''s decision to postopone a final decision on its fate to December 5. "I think the team will become a reality as BCCI''s decision holds some hope to save it," the Congress MP from Thiruvananthapuram told reporters here today. Tharoor, who had to resign as Minister of State for External Affairs a year back amid controversies over his role as ''mentor'' of the Kochi team, said if the team would do good for cricket in Kerala in particular and sporting activities in general. He was here to attend a private function. At a meeting of IPL''s Governing Council today in Nagpur, BCCI put off the decision on the franchise for a third time after expiry of a month-long deadline given to it for sorting out its internal bickering over shareholding. BCCI President Shashank Manohar said the board would take a decision on December 5. Kochi was on the verge of being thrown out of IPL due to shareholding dispute between the consortium''s investors. But the franchise owners reached a compromise yesterday.

Published>Sun, Nov 28 10 08:22 PM

Ropar (Punjab), Nov.28 (ANI): Quadrush 2010, an adventure sport event, enthralled participants in Punjab's Ropar District over the weekend.

The event was held at the Kikar Lodge Resort in which participants used the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV), also called Quad bikes along dusty tracks.

A woman contestant Gauri Gupta participated in the event for the first time.

"One thing stuck me, the first man who kept his foot on moon said 'It is just a single step for me, but a huge step for mankind'. It is for me. It's a single step for a woman like me, but a huge step for womankind. If I can participate, any other woman can, and they should," said Gupta.

"It's a part of it and we should enjoy it. I am not saying it is about equality or anything but, if you have courage, then there is no looking back. Men, women, children and the handicapped, if you have the jest, nothing can stop you," she added.

Anurag Bareja, a paraplegic contestant from New Delhi, said that he found these bikes safe for riding.

According to Hargobinder Singh, the organiser of Quadrush 2010, ecological balance should be borne in mind before organising such events. On this score, he hailed mother nature.

"The Quadrush is a very different adventure sport where we figure out the trails in five legs of various difficulties. We completed one quadrush in Kikar Lodge; we got very fantastic trails and none of the trails upset the forest," said Singh.

Raj S.Rathore was declared the winner of the race while Rahul Soni and Balwinder Singh were first and second runner ups respectively.

Rathore was given a branded watch. The first woman participant, Gauri Gupta, received a special gift. (ANI)

Team India gives post-match press conference a miss

Sun, Nov 28 10 06:52 PM

Tapan Mohanta Guwahati, November 28 (PTI) The Indian team today gave the post-match press conference a miss as stand-in skipper Gautam Gambhir left the Nehru Stadium immediately after the team''s 40-run win over New Zealand in the first of five-match ODI series, here today. Gambhir, who is leading the team for the first time in Mahendra Singh Dhoni''s absence, left the stadium after the post-match presentation citing "personal reasons". Post-match conference is mandatory as per the International Cricket Council''s protocol. While losing captain Ross Taylor spoke to the media, Gambhir was conspicuous by his absence. A blame game between the local Assam Cricket Association (ACA) and Indian team''s support staff followed. Team support staff Mayank Parikh, when contacted, blamed the ACA authorities and said: "We were waiting in the dressing room after the presentation got over but the local media manager (from ACA) did not approach us." ACA general secretary, Bikash Barua, however, claimed that the Indian team did not want to speak to the media. "Just after the press conference, I personally contacted Gambhir who said there will be no India press conference as the team would leave soon," Barua told PTI. Even as the cricketers left the venue right after the presentation ceremony, India coach Gary Kirsten was seen doing laps of the stadium. The South African, however, chose to ignore the waiting media when asked about the skip. "For ICC events the post-match conference is mandatory. The losing captain comes first followed by the winning captain. For a bilateral series like this, contact BCCI," said Sami-ul-Hasan, ICC''s Communications and Media Operations manager. But the Indian Cricket Board was not aware of the regulations. "I''m not aware of any regulations. I can''t comment on this," was what BCCI chief administrative officer, Prof Ratnakar Shetty, said. Bhupathi-Mirnyi in title clash of Tour Finals

Sun, Nov 28 10 06:22 PM

London, Nov 28 (PTI) Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi earned a shot at their first ever World Tour title after dismantling Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the semifinals here. The third seeded Indo-Belarussian pair scored a 6-4 6-4 win over the Polish pair to reach the final. This is Bhupathi and Mirnyi''s fourth straight win over the Poles this season. They will fight it out with second seeds and winners of 2008 edition Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic, who shocked top seeds Mike and Bob Bryan 6-3 3-6 12-10 in their semifinal. This is for the first time that Bhupathi and Mirnyi have reached the finals as in all three earlier attempts, they had failed to go beyond the group stage in 2003 and 2004. Bhupathi had missed the Asian Games to participate in the season-ending grand finale. The third seeds broke the Poles in the seventh game when Fyrstenberg committed a forehand volley error. Mirnyi later went on to seal the set with a service hold to 15 in the 10th game. The Poles then saved three break points in the first game but dropped serve in the third game and Bhupathi and Mirnyi established a 3-1 lead after a hold. From there on it was hardly a problem for the third seeds.

Are Indians good enough to take on the world?

Published>Sun, Nov 28 10 06:08 PM

New Delhi, Nov 28 (IANS) The comparison between India and China as sporting nations is inevitable after Delhi organised the Commonwealth Games and Guangzhou the Asian Games within a month of each other. There is a vast difference between the two countries despite overwhelming similarities otherwise.

The Chinese hailed the Asian Games as a platform to showcase the tremendous achievements of their country in economic and social development. In stark contrast, the Commonwealth Games were condemned as the work of corrupt minds, never mind the exceptional showing by Indian athletes to top the 100-medal mark in New Delhi and their best-ever medals tally at Guangzhou.

In China, no one is making a song and dance about Guangzhou spending $18.3 billion on new stadiums, roads and subway lines, the amount being much more than the $14.7 billion budgeted for the London Olympics.

China is already up there as the No.1 Olympic nation in the world, let alone in Asia, whereas India is still taking its baby steps.

With 199 gold, 119 silver and 98 bronze - for a total of 416 - China are the runaway leaders at the top of the table for the eighth time in a row, easily surpassing their best gold tally of 183, set in their backyard in Beijing in 1990.

The canvas has widened with 36 of the 45 participating teams winning medals, South Korea coming in way behind China in second place with 232 medals, including 76 gold and Japan further down third with 48 gold in 216 medals.

The clear domination of the three major economies in the region can be seen from the fact that the fourth-placed Iran logged in 59 medals with 20 gold and the next best Kazakhstan 19 gold in a tally of 79, ahead of India in sixth position.

The bizarre logic of critics of India in sport is that heads I win, tails you lose. If the athletes perform well as they did in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games, the credit goes to them and if they don't then it is a systemic failure brought about by the corrupt officialdom.

Not many, save the athletes themselves, gave the Indians a record 64 medals -- 14 gold, 17 silver and 33 bronze. Only thrice since the Games began in Delhi in 1951, the Indians crossed 50-medal mark, the first time at the inaugural edition when they toted up 51 medals but then there were only 11 countries and some 400-odd athletes taking part.

Again, in the 1982 Games in New Delhi, they got 57 and 53 at Doha four years ago. India's best gold haul 15 of came in 1951 and 13 in 82.

Some athletes confounded even the pundits. Not many were willing to wager on India winning five gold medals from track and field, though they expected them to get a few silver and bronze. It was not without a valid reason as their best performances in recent competitions are comparable with the best in the region in measurable sports.

Also, the Indians did not fare well at all in the last Games at Doha and then in the Asian Track and Field Meet in Guangzhou last year, winning only one gold each. Eventually, the athletes exceeded all expectations by garnering 11 medals in all.

For once, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), the national sports federations and above all the government can rightfully take a modicum of credit for the joyful jump of the Indian sport, albeit a small one.

If the IOA and the sports ministry were not on the same page to prevail upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to release Rs.680 crores ($150 million) for the training and international exposure of the athletes in the last two years, the results would have been different at both New Delhi and Guangzhou.

In the run up to the Commonwealth Games and after their impressive performance, many athletes went on record to say that the training and competition they received made it possible. The confidence the Delhi Games gave them got carried to Guangzhou. Not very often Indian athletes are seen challenging the Chinese and leaving them behind as they did in some of the disciplines. It may be a modest achievement, but it is a spark that can provide impetus to the system.

The days of hockey being India's prime sport to win a gold are over. If ever India had a chance of winning the gold it was here. They lost a semifinal they should have won against Malaysia and they had to settle for a bronze. Imagine, they beat the two strongest contenders for the gold, Pakistan, eventual winners, in the pool and South Korea for the bronze.

It took quite a while for Indian athletes to warm up after the shooters failed to provide the kind of start they had at the Commonwealth Games. Almost the entire first week went with only one gold coming from cueist Pankaj Advani.

It was an unbelievable start to athletics. Preeja Sreedharan, the railway employee from Palakkad, Kerala, and Nashik girl Kavita Raut shook the 80,000-caapcity Guangdong Olympic Stadium, at Aoti complex, coming in one-two in the 10,000 metres and as if that was not enough, Sudha Singh glided and waded through to the 3000 metres steeplechase gold.

Sudha's performance was fantastic, as no Indian had won the steeplechase medal, leave alone gold. The gold-silver finish by Preeja and Kavita in the grueling 25-lap race was as stunning as they had left favourite China's Bai Xue behind.

Even the athletes seem to be hunting in pairs. Now it was the turn of Joseph Abraham and Ashwini Chidananda to mint some more gold with astonishing performances in the 400m hurdles.

Ashwini, the girl from Udupi, clocked her personal best (56.15) to win the event P. T. Usha last won for India in 1986 in 55.42, while Kottayam-based railwayman Joseph did enough to become the first Indian in the men's section to win the gold from the track after Charles Borromeo in the 800m at the 1982 Games.

The fifth gold was on the expected lines as Manjeet Kaur, Sini Jose, Ashwini and Mandeep Kaur retained the gold India had won at the Doha Games, the only one by the athletes.

The medals that will stand out are Bajrang Lal Takhar's rowing gold, Ashish Kumar's gymnastics bronze and the bronze won by swimmer Virdhawal Khade. In rowing, this is the first gold and Khade's medal is the first in swimming since Khazan Singh Tokas won the silver at the Seoul Asian Games in 1986.

It was a big let down by shooters. Agreed, it is not easy to be consistently touching cent percent every time you walk out to compete. The shooters were under tremendous pressure to deliver at the Commonwealth Games and they could not sustain the form and had only one gold from Ronjon Singh Sodhi in the double trap. Gagan Narang, the CWG star could only get two silver medals.

Boxer Vijender Singh, who failed to win a gold in New Delhi, proved strategically superior to former World champion from Uzbekistan Abbos Atoev and won the gold. Vikas Krishan was the other boxer to clinch a gold and he stunned defending champion Qing Hu of China. These were the first boxing golds for India after Dingko Singh's in 1998. Boxers swelled the tally by also bagging three silver and four bronze.

The two gold medals from kabaddi were more or less taken for granted. If the sport survives as a Games discipline, India can expect some stiff competition in the years ahead.

Just as other teams like Iran are improving in kabaddi, the Indians are also catching up with others in other disciplines.

The question now is whether the Indians are good enough to take on the best in the world at the London Olympics in less than two years. Some of the athletes are confident and that is a big morale booster.

Kohli hits ton as India wins Guwahati ODI against New Zealand

Published>Sun, Nov 28 10 05:36 PM

Guwahati, Nov 28(ANI): Indian batsman Virat Kohli scored a century to help India beat New Zealand by 40 runs in the first one-day international and took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series here on Sunday.

Put into bat first, Kohli scored 105, while Yuvraj Singh hit 42 and then took three wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for 236 while replying to India's 276.

Kohli shared a crucial partnership with Gautam Gambhir (38), and when the captain was dismissed with the team total on 92, he shared an 88 run third-wicket partnership with Yuvraj to set up a good platform for the home side.

Kohli's 104-ball knock was laced with 10 fours. His stroke play looked set to take India to a formidable score, but New Zealand fast bowler Andy McKay pinned them back at the Nehru Stadium.

McKay finished with the figures of 4-62, while Kyle Mills finished with 3-42 on an unusually easy pitch for the batsmen.

New Zealand's chase started on a poor note, as openers Jamie Howe (nine) and Martin Guptil (30) were dismissed inside the first ten overs with just 35 runs on board.

Ross Taylor (66) and Kane Williamson (25) led a fight-back with their 67-run stand for the third wicket.

However, Williamson's dismissal saw a batting collapse, which ended with the New Zealand team reeling on 169-8 in the 36th over.

Nathan McCullum (35) and Kyle Mills (32) steadied the ship putting on 67 runs together, but the visitors' resistance was ended by Sreesanth who dismissed both the batsman off consecutive deliveries to restrict New Zealand to 236.

Sreesanth, Yuvraj and R. Ashwin picked up three wickets each. (ANI)

Bhupathi-Mirnyi to clash with Nestor-Zimonjic in World Tour Finals

Published>Sun, Nov 28 10 04:16 PM

London, Nov 28 (IANS) India's Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi of Belarus cruised past Polish duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the year-end doubles title clash in the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

Third seeds Bhupathi and Mirnyi will face second seeds Daniel Nestor of Canada and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia, the 2008 winners, who saved a match point to beat three-time former champions Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan 6-3, 3-6, 12-10 in 71 minutes Saturday.

Bhupathi and Mirnyi are chasing their second title of the season, having triumphed two weeks ago at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris-Bercy.

They are through to the championship match at the season finale for the first time after failing to advance past the group stages on their previous two appearances in 2003 and 2004.

The third seeds started brightly and broke through in the seventh game courtesy a forehand volley error by Fyrstenberg, before Mirnyi went on to seal the set with a service hold in the 10th game.

The Poles were under pressure right from the start of the second set, with Matkowski forced to save three break points in the first game. Their resistance crumbled in the third game, though, as Fyrstenberg's serve was broken and Bhupathi and Mirnyi established a 3-1 lead.

The Polish duo saved two match points on Matkowski's serve in the ninth game before saving a further two match points in the following game. Mirnyi was strong on the duo's fifth match point chance, though, punching a backhand volley down the middle forcing an error from Fyrstenberg after 82 minutes of play.

It is the fourth win in four meetings this season for Bhupathi and Mirnyi over their Polish opponents.

In contrast, Nestor and Zimonjic had to battle past the formidable Bryans.

In a tense match tie-break, Zimonjic played a fine backhand half-volley down the line at 7-8 that settled his nerves.

Nestor and Zimonjic could not convert one match point opportunity at 9-8 when Bob hit an ace. Nestor saved one match point with an unreturned serve at 9-10, before Zimonjic hit a mid-court backhand winner at 11-10 for a place in the final.

'We've had a lot of great battles over the years,' said Nestor. 'Today was a typical match between the two teams where it's very evenly matched. We were fortunate to win in the end.'

'We did a lot of good things. But basically we're playing with good energy. We're serving well. I served well when I had to. I wasn't necessarily serving well the whole time. Nenad has been serving well the whole week.'

It was Nestor and Zimonjic's first win over the Bryans since October 2009 at the Swiss Indoors Basel final.

Strauss, Cook dominate to revive England

Published>Sun, Nov 28 10 03:08 PM

Openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook both posted centuries on Sunday to wipe out England's first innings deficit and bring the tourists right back into the first Ashes test against Australia.

Starting the fourth day of the test 202 runs in arrears, England had reached 309-1 with a lead of 88 at the close of play with Cook on 132 not out and Jonathan Trott (54) at the crease.

Although they could not match the heights of Mike Hussey and Brad Haddin's partnership of 307 that put Australia in charge on the third day, Strauss and Cook's opening stand of 188 could end up being just as important at the end of the five-test series.

Where touring sides of recent years might have crumbled, Strauss and Cook showed England's boasts of their teams' resilience was not just talk.

"It was very important that we came back into the game today," said England captain Strauss. "Yesterday was a very frustrating day for us and some of our batmen needed to score some runs today. Fortunately Alastair and I were able to."

Strauss was removed for a duck in the third ball of the first innings but seized his chance in the second to claim his 19th test century -- his first since his 161 in the Lords Ashes test last July -- soon after lunch.

"It was my fourth Ashes hundred and every one of them is very special," said Strauss. "I had a bit of luck, it wasn't the best technical innings I've ever played, but in terms of importance it's up there."

VERY DISAPPOINTED

Cook had scored more slowly but was given fewer chances than his skipper and clinched his 14th test century, only his second against Australia, with a cut shot that sent the ball fizzing to the boundary just after tea to add to his first innings 67.

By that stage England's best partnership in a test at the Gabba had been broken and Strauss was furious with himself after coming down the wicket to occasional spinner Marcus North only to be stumped for 110 by wicketkeeper Haddin.

"It was not the sort of dismissal we were looking for," he said. "I was very disappointed with myself, both as a batsman and a captain."

Cook was joined by Trott, who rode his luck a little with some loose shots but helped put on 121 for the second wicket as Australian heads dropped after a long, hard day in the field.

Questions will be asked about the Australian paceman, in particular Mitchell Johnson, who failed to get anything out of the Gabba strip and remains wicketless in the test at the cost of 131 runs.

"We weren't able to sustain pressure for long enough," said Shane Watson, who thought it was unfair to single out Johnson.

"Unfortunately all of us as a bowling unit weren't able to execute for long enough to build up the pressure."

Australia's misery was compounded by three missed catches, Johnson dropping Strauss when the England captain was on 70 and Peter Siddle and Michael Clarke spilling two more difficult chances to dismiss Trott.

Even the umpire referral system, which saved Hussey's innings early on Saturday, went against the hosts when umpire Aleem Dar's refusal of Ben Hilfenhaus's appeal for lbw against Trott was upheld after the review of the TV footage.

"It's ebbed and flowed," said Watson of the match. "And it's always going to be like that throughout the whole series. A couple of little passages will decide it and I hope there's a little passage in it for us tomorrow."

Play was abandoned early because of bad light and will begin 15 minutes early at 09:45 local time (2345 GMT) on Monday.

FIFA should be begging England to stage 2018 World Cup: Venables

Published>Sun, Nov 28 10 02:06 PM

London, Nov.28 (ANI): Former England football manager Terry Venables has said that, England never should have bid for the 2018 World Cup, but should have allowed FIFA to beg it to stage it.

"Our rivals from Spain and Portugal, Russia and Holland and Belgium may beg to differ, but, when it comes to hosting the tournament, I believe we are the outstanding candidate. The logical choice. The most sensible solution," Venables writes in an article for The Sun.

"We have the fans, facilities and foundations to put on the greatest World Cup ever. All we need now is the nod from the bigwigs in Zurich on Thursday. It is certainly time the showpiece came to these shores again. We have not hosted it since that glorious summer of 1966. That means come 2018, it will be 52 years since the country that gave football to the world last staged the world's biggest football tournament," he added.

England hase not hosted a major tournament since Euro 96, when, of course, I was in charge of the Three Lions.

According to Venables, "It was a summer none of us will ever forget, a watershed moment in English football as we put on an extravaganza still talked about today. Even 141/2 years on, people still stop me to talk about it."

He said staging the 2018 World Cup would reproduce that feel-good factor. (ANI)

Stars'' no-show hits attendance in Guwahati

Sun, Nov 28 10 01:52 PM

Guwahati, Nov 28 (PTI) Absence of stars such as Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the Indian team has affected attendance in their first ODI against New Zealand, the last match to be played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here. Being the only stadium in the seven North Eastern states to host international cricket matches, the venue used to draw huge crowd who do not mind spending even chilly nights out to get in due to the early start of the games. However, the scene was different today for the one-day match between a new-look India under Gautam Gambhir and the Kiwis as attendance was far from satisfactory. Only about 16,000 tickets were sold for the match in the 23,000 capacity stadium, a senior Assam Cricket Association (ACA) official said. "Yes, this time the response was far from satisfactory as the stars preferred to take rest for the opening one-day match," he said. "The response was less even from the students who get concession on the price of the ticket," he said. Besides skipper Dhoni, India have rested star players Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh due to injury concerns ahead of the World Cup. The five-match series against Daniel Vettori''s men is India''s last outing in the sub-continent before they begin their campaign in the World Cup to be held in February-March next year to be hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. To make the matter worse for the spectators, New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori had to sit out due to injury. "Today''s match should have been a memorable one as it is the last match is the stadium, but there is disappointment because of absence of stars", Rajib Saikia, a student of Cotton College, said. The ACA has decided to host future matches at the Barsapara stadium exclusively built for cricket as the Nehru Stadium is a multi-purpose venue. "Several cultural events and other sports including football is played in the stadium and the curator gets hardly a month to prepare the ground", the ACA official said. The vendors selling placards, Indian flags, and hats were also dejected as business was dull. "We hardly get an international cricket match in this region and people wait for it. We finish selling the articles within half an hour but today we have to go back with our bags full", Ranbir Roy, a vendor, said outside the venue.
