High court disposes of petition on CWG corruption

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 12:27 PM

New Delhi, Oct 20 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday disposed of a petition seeking an inquiry into alleged corruption in the funding of the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG), and noted a government panel was already looking into it.

The petition filed by former Indian Administration Service (IAS) officer Arun Bhatia had sought an inquiry into alleged misappropriation of funds in organising the Oct 3-14 CWG in Delhi.

The bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan said the petitioner could file documents related to any evidence in the matter before a committee appointed by the government to look into the graft allegations.

However, the bench allowed the petitioner to approach the court after the enquiry.

Brett Lee: Never sledge Sachin, Lara, KP; it backfires

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 12:21 PM

Australian pacer Brett Lee feels Indian batting icon Sachin Tendulkar, West Indian Brian Lara and England's Kevin Pietersen are part of a select band of international batsmen who should never be sledged as the strategy generally backfires.

"There are guys you can stir up and get stuck into and there are others you leave alone," Lee said.

"Sachin Tendulkar is a guy you don't want to chat to period, because he will knuckle down, same as Brian Lara.

Kevin Pietersen has controlled aggression and he likes it when someone has a chat to him. He takes it personally and it fires him up and he'll want to score a big hundred," the fast bowler was quoted as saying by the local newspapers here.

Lee said he is confident that Pietersen, who is currently struggling for the destructive form that made him a much-feared batsman, will come good in the Ashes.

"He might be a slightly different character to the norm-he might be away from the side and doing his own thing but

that happens in everyday life. I'd always back Kevin Pietersen to come out and do well," Lee said.

The veteran pacer said for Test cricket to flourish, it is important that batsmen such as Pietersen do well.

"He will do well and I hope he does put on a good show for the Australian spectators. What Test cricket needs is a

match-winner and exciting cricket and Kevin Pietersen fits the bill.

Winning a medal in Olympics main goal: Kashyap

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 12:17 PM

Having bagged a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games, upcoming shuttler Parupalli Kashyap has an ambitious goal now to win a medal in the Olympics to be held in London in 2012.

"After the experience in the Commonwealth Games, I want to qualify for the London Olympics (in 2012). I want to win a medal in the Olympics. That is the main goal right now. But, in a month's time, we have the Asian Games, that is the next target, to do well there," he said here.

Expressing happiness for winning the bronze in the Commonwealth Games, he credited the coaching given to him by Chief National Coach Pullela Gopichand and another coach Bhaskar Babu.

"I am very happy for winning the bronze medal. I was disappointed with the semi final match. I wanted to be in the final. Next day, I came back and won the bronze medal. I was very happy," he said.

Kashyap, who beat Chetan Anand in the Badminton singles event of the CWG to win the bronze, said he has been consistently putting up a good performance against him.

"Since 2005-06, I have been beating Chetan. In the national games final at Guwahati, I have defeated him. I am the only guy who beaten him consistently. He has also beaten me a few times. But this year, I really worked hard. My performance in the international games was better than ever.

So I had that confidence. My coaches Gopichand sir, Bhaskar Babu sir trained really hard which has helped me achieve this medal," the Hyderabad player said.

Kashyap expressed confidence that his bronze-medal winning performance in the Commonwealth Games would ensure a slot among the top-10.

"I think few performances of mine this year, I thought, have pushed me into the next phase and I think I am very close to reaching the top 10. It is just a matter of time. I think I need to work the same way I am doing," he said.

I am at peace: Woods

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 11:53 AM

Tiger Woods says he never learned more in a year in which he never won less. Woods said he is more at peace with his personal life than when he returned to golf in April, and he remains hopeful that his season will not end without a victory. "I learned a lot about myself, and I learned how things went wrong, why they went wrong, and had to take a pretty deep and introspective look at myself. And there wasn't a lot of things I like about it," Woods said in a video conference call for his Chevron World Challenge. "But I had to do it, and I did it, and grateful that I did.

"I think that I come from a much better place, much more grounded place now than I ever have before."

The Chevron World Challenge, to be played December 3-6 at Sherwood Country Club, will be his final tournament of the year. Woods next plays November 4 in Shanghai at the HSBC Champions, his last chance to win an official PGA Tour event. Then he's off to Melbourne to defend his title in the Australian Masters before closing out the year at Sherwood.

"I think everyone's certainly more at peace, and so am I," Woods said.

His tournament has one of its best fields, with defending champion Jim Furyk and Woods joining a dozen other Ryder Cup players. The list includes three major champions - all but Masters champ Phil Mickelson - along with newcomers Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson.

The two sponsor exemptions were awarded to Camilo Villegas and Stewart Cink. In his last performance, Woods was 9-under through 15 holes when he beat Francesco Molinari in singles, playing the final seven holes in 7-under-par. Europe still won the Ryder Cup, although Woods had his best week in the event, going 3-1.

Bangladesh showers cricketers with prizes after NZ win

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 11:47 AM

Cash and other incentives are flooding in for the Bangladesh cricket team after their 4-0 triumph over New Zealand in a one-day series.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina hosted the team at her official residence and announced a gift of a housing plot in the capital and a car to every player of 20-member team.

A welfare trust fund will also be set up to help the players after their careers or during times of injury, she said.

Hasina handed over individual cheques for 100,000 taka ($1,400) each, presented by two private banks to each member of the team. She also handed over the keys to a car given to acting captain of the wining team Shakib Al Hasan by a private bank.

"It was a great success and our players can now realise that hard work and proper training can help them achieve any triumph in the arena of sports," state news agency BSS quoted Hasina as saying.

Earlier, the Bangladesh Cricket Board said it was giving around eight million taka ($113,000) to the team as a bonus for winning the matches and series.

The country's sports ministry also announced an additional incentive of one million taka ($ 14,000) for the cricketers.

The New Zealand series was Bangladesh's first clean sweep against a full-strength top cricketing nation.

ICC''s undercover plan neither reasonable nor lawful: ACA

Wed, Oct 20 10 11:27 AM

Melbourne, Oct 20 (PTI) The ICC''s plan of using undercover agents posing as illegal bookmakers to "entrap" players has not gone down too well with the Australian Cricketers'' Association, which says the idea is neither "reasonable" nor "lawful". ACA chief executive Paul Marsh said the ICC has not discussed the plan with the Federation of International Cricketers'' Associations. "At this stage it''s unclear to the ACA and FICA whether the proposal is designed to focus on catching and punishing players for not reporting approaches by illegal bookmakers or catching those directly involved in match-fixing," Marsh said. "As such we are in the process of seeking clarity from the ICC as to their intentions. If the proposal is focused on the former, then we believe the ICC needs to improve its current reporting and confidentiality processes before players should be entrapped and sanctioned for not reporting approaches," he was quoted as saying by ''Cricinfo''. The ACA boss said there are "significant concerns" about the players'' security and the ICC needs to address them before going ahead with any such plan. "This has caused many of them to have concerns for their safety and wellbeing, as well as being a distraction to their cricket," Marsh said. "In this way, the lack of confidentiality and trust in the process is actually a disincentive to report an approach," he added. "We all share the common goal of keeping corruption out of the game. However in saying this we''re not convinced at this stage that a plan to effectively entrap players is either reasonable or lawful." Marsh said a better option would be have Players'' Associations educating the cricketers about the perils of match-fixing. "This will provide greater education and specialist advice as well as help create a culture of accountability. "The ACA stands alongside FICA in urging the ICC to consider these recommendations as a more urgent priority than appointing undercover agents acting as illegal bookmakers," he said. Under the plan, players who fail to report the approaches from the agents face penalties under the ICC''s anti-corruption code. "We are thinking of setting up our own approaches to players, to see if they report it, we will think out of the box," ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat has stated.

Rafter takes Australian Davis Cup reins

Wed, Oct 20 10 11:21 AM

Former world number one Pat Rafter has been named Australia's Davis Cup coach and is tasked with leading the once-great tennis nation back to the pinnacle of the sport.

The twice U.S. Open champion replaces John Fitzgerald who stepped down after a decade at the helm.

Rafter will team up with his former coach Tony Roche to try to guide Australia back into the elite 16-nation World Group for the first time since 2007.

"This is something of a dream-team combination," Tennis Australia head of men's tennis Todd Woodbridge said.

Rafter, 37, said he was eager to start working with the team.

"We've got a lot of young players that have a great opportunity to play for Australia," he said.

"My standards and expectations are extremely high. This is a great opportunity to be part of something that means a lot to me."

Australia's most successful Davis Cup player Lleyton Hewitt welcomed the news.

"I'm happy with the appointment of Pat and Rochey. Pat and I get along great and have shared some special moments at the highest level of Davis Cup, and I look forward to working with him," he said.

"And Rochey, I have always said his experience is second to none and he will be a fantastic addition again to the team."

Australia has won 28 Davis Cup trophies, second only to the U.S. with 32, but Rafter's failure to win the team trophy remains a regret in his colourful career.

The serve-volleyer missed Australia's 1999 final triumph over France with a shoulder injury and featured in Australia's losing finals against Spain in Barcelona in 2000 and against France in Melbourne in 2001.

Ferguson may get over Rooney shock with retail therapy

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 09:37 AM

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson will have to stop dwelling on why Wayne Rooney wants to quit the club and start focusing on how he is going to fill the huge hole the striker will leave.

Ferguson looked on Tuesday like he was beginning to take it personally that a third top striker seemed to be heading out of Old Trafford in less than two years.

After failing to replace Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo with forwards of the same stature it will be time for a rethink if Rooney, whose 34 goals in all competitions enabled United to challenge for the title last season, walks out the door.

The manager has made it clear that door is still open for Rooney to stay, but after such a public declaration of shock that the striker wanted to leave, it seems Ferguson realises he will soon have to manage without him.

"I was dumbfounded, I couldn't understand it at all because only months before he'd said he was at the biggest club in the world and he wanted to stay for life," Ferguson told MUTV.

"We just don't know what's changed the boy's mind."

Ferguson has spoken previously of not wanting to get involved in the "kamikaze" spending of some of his rivals but it could be soccer suicide if he does not buy some established players in the next transfer window.

The world record fee of 80 million pounds ($126.3 million) received from Real Madrid for Ronaldo in 2009 has not all been reinvested, so the money for a class forward should be there despite United's 522 million pounds ($823.8 million) gross debt.

UNPOPULAR OWNERS

Fans are unhappy the club's American owners, the Glazers, have failed to provide more money for transfers and if there is no movement in the mid-season window, calls will grow for them to go the same way as Liverpool's former owners last week.

"They have saddled us with a huge debt and they are taking more and more money out of the club every season and the lack of net investment in the squad since they arrived is clear to all," the Manchester United Supporters Trust said in a statement.

"They've bought players but are they like-for-like replacements in terms of the quality of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Roy Keane and Cristiano Ronaldo?

"Our club is generating record revenues yet it appears we are unable to compete even with small clubs like Manchester City let alone Chelsea, Madrid and Barcelona."

With midfielders Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, defender Gary Neville and keeper Edwin van der Sar at the tail end of their careers, it is not just a Rooney replacement that fans will want Ferguson to buy.

His job will not be helped by a shaky start to the season -- characterised by conceding late goals when leading to end up drawing matches -- because for all his assertions they are "the best club in the world", United stand fourth in the league.

They need only look to Liverpool in the relegation zone for evidence of how quickly things can slide for big clubs.

NURTURING TALENT

Ferguson is a great believer in nurturing young players and has said investment in youth is more beneficial to United than paying big fees for established players. He says youngsters have a loyalty to the club because they appreciate their education.

It is the lack of that loyalty by Rooney, signed by Ferguson as an 18-year-old, that seems to have hurt the manager the most and, at 68, time is not on his side to count on youth to come through the ranks so he can lead United to a record 19th title.

He certainly has promising young players -- although 22-year-old forward Javier Hernandez sometimes lacks conviction in front of goal -- but they cannot make up for experience.

Dimitar Berbatov, whose resurgence has coincided with the timeframe in which Ferguson has known about Rooney's departure plans, needs a partner who works as hard as the England striker in creating and scoring goals which could come at a high price.

'Squirrels' president quits over fabricated ticket sales

Wed, Oct 20 10 08:57 AM

Omiya Ardija president Seigo Watanabe has said he will quit the Japanese club following an embarrassing scandal over fabricated attendance figures.

The 55-year-old fell on his sword after the "Squirrels" were discovered to have inflated their J-League attendances by more than 110,000 over four years, Japanese media reported on Wednesday.

"I'm angry," J-League chairman Kazumi Ohigashi told the Nikkan Sports newspaper. "It damages the credibility of the whole J-League. I can't believe they would do this."

Rival clubs also criticised Ardija.

"The onus will be on all clubs to correct this situation," said Urawa Reds president Mitsuo Hashimoto. "We will all have to demonstrate we're doing things the right way."

Watanabe said the pressure of trying to meet the club's target of 300,000 fans in a season by 2009 had led him to fabricate the numbers.

"No one else was involved," he said in a tearful news conference. "It was poor management but I wasn't aware of the J-League's standards for defining attendance."

The J-League could further punish the club following a special disciplinary hearing and is expected to examine the records of all clubs.

United lose rebel Rooney as Eto'o eyes more goals

Wed, Oct 20 10 08:37 AM

Manchester United will be getting used to life without Wayne Rooney at home to Bursaspor in the Champions League on Wednesday when holders Inter Milan unleash red-hot Samuel Eto'o on Tottenham Hotspur.

Rooney has shocked United by saying he wants to leave but manager Alex Ferguson will not have to make an awkward decision about playing him against the Turkish side after the club said the England striker had gone down with an ankle injury.

Rangers also host Valencia in Group C.

Eto'o scored a hat-trick in his last Group A game against Werder Bremen and will be licking his lips as he comes up against an injury-hit Spurs defence at the San Siro.

Dutch champions Twente Enschede and Werder have some catching up to do in the other group clash.

Barcelona have doubts over Xavi's fitness for the home game with Group D leaders FC Copenhagen while pointless Panathinaikos take on Rubin Kazan.

Group B pacesetters Olympique Lyon, with Brazil full back Michel Bastos in surprise goalscoring form, entertain Benfica's South American legion with Schalke 04 and the in-from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar welcoming Hapoel Tel-Aviv.

Toms takes early control at Grand Slam event

Wed, Oct 20 10 07:17 AM

American David Toms birdied five of the first 10 holes on the way to a one-shot lead in Tuesday's opening round of the end-of-season PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda.

The 2001 PGA Championship winner had to contend with strengthening winds on the back nine before completing a four-under-par 67 at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton.

South African Ernie Els opened with a 68, U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland carded a 72 and Germany's Martin Kaymer, who won the U.S. PGA Championship in August, returned a 74.

"It was a great first 10 holes," Toms told reporters after taking control of the two-round stroke-play event which traditionally brings together the winners of the year's four majors.

"Even though it's a fun event, kind of an exhibition-style event, you want to go out and play great. Getting off to a good start was nice."

Toms, who covered the front nine in a flawless four-under 32, was unfortunate to bogey the 11th after his drive ended up in a sand-filled divot.

"I didn't want to hit it over the green and I chunked it, not being committed to the shot," he said of his approach on the par-four hole.

BAD BREAK

"That hurt. Mentally it goes from like you're in total control and then you get a bad break, you got to somehow come back."

Toms came back superbly, sinking a 30-footer to birdie the par-four 12th, before he also bogeyed the par-three 13th after missing the green to the right off the tee.

"After that I'm just trying to hit solid shots," he said. "It started to get a little windy and they are tough holes there by the ocean. I felt like I played pretty solid coming in."

Three-times major champion Els, who won the event in 1997, was overall satisfied with his score after spending much of the day tinkering with a new putting style.

"I'm in a good position," the former world number one said. "Hopefully I can play a little better tomorrow. Feels like especially the front nine I left a lot of shots out there.

"I've got to work on the greens a little bit. I'm working on a new putting technique, and it's kind of new still."

Els and Toms were late replacements for Masters champion Phil Mickelson and British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen. American Mickelson withdrew due to arthritis and South African Oosthuizen pulled out because of an ankle injury.

Ferguson shocked as Rooney looks for the exit

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 06:57 AM

Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson shook his head on Tuesday as he struggled to comprehend that Wayne Rooney wanted to leave "the best club in the world".

Not one for baring his soul to the media, Ferguson stunned a news conference with a heart-felt monologue lasting several minutes describing his shock and bewilderment at finding out in August the striker wanted to quit Old Trafford.

Looking every inch a man who had been carrying around that burden for some time, a serious-faced Ferguson told how the England striker had gone from wanting to spend the rest of his career at United to looking for the exit within a few months.

The one thing he could not say was why.

"We are as bemused as anyone can be. We can't quite understand why he would want to leave," Ferguson told a news conference, where the first sign that something was brewing came at the start when reporters were told the "Wayne issue" would be dealt with after questions on Wednesday's Champions League game.

Those half-hearted questions over, Ferguson consulted his notes as he confirmed reports the striker would not sign a new contract.

Rooney's contract expires in 2012 and talks had been going on last season over a new deal but Ferguson said he had then been told on Aug. 14 by United chief executive David Gill of the striker's decision.

"It was a shock," Ferguson said. "I couldn't believe it because in other discussions as early as March he intimated that he wanted to stay, he wanted to sign a life contract, he was happy at the club, he was at the best club in the world.

"I had a meeting with him. He intimated to me in his own way that he wanted away.

"I told him, 'The only thing I want from you, Wayne is to honour the club's position and traditions and behave like a proper professional and we'll try to see it through.'

"There was an offer there, it never got into financial discussion, but I know David was prepared to offer him a contract that would be difficult to better elsewhere."

'MYSTERY AREA'

He denied arguing with Rooney but they are clearly at odds over whether he is injured with Ferguson speaking at length about what he called the "mystery area" of his ankle problem.

The manager has been resting an out-of-sorts Rooney because of the injury which he picked up in a Champions League game against Rangers last month but after playing for England earlier this month Rooney denied being injured.

"He said he wasn't injured, that was disappointing as we knew well he was carrying an injury, he went for a scan that showed a minor defect and he had treatment," said Ferguson.

Rooney, who has scored once this season and only from the penalty spot, will miss Wednesday's Champions League Group C match at home to Bursaspor after a United spokeswoman said he had been taken off the training field on a stretcher earlier in the day with the same ankle complaint.

Ferguson looked into space and put his finger to his chin as if stuck in his own world trying to understand why the player whom he bought six years ago as an 18-year-old from Everton would want to abandon a club who had supported him so well.

He said he had given him advice on matter from his finances to his private life and seemed to be after some kind of payback.

"You look after players and that creates a tremendous loyalty," said Ferguson, who paid 25.6 million pounds ($40.40 million) for Rooney.

"We don't understand why he would want to leave. No one can deny it's one of the most successful (clubs) in British football ... (it has) a fantastic history, a great stadium, great training arrangements."

"I can't answer any questions about why he's doing it -- the player is adamant he wants to leave."

With Rooney barely off the back or front pages in recent months, following revelations about his private life, Ferguson later told MUTV that he had doubts over whether the player had taken notice of his plea that he did not want "any nonsense".

He said the door was still open for a deal to be reached but Rooney could have plenty more offers to consider if any of the reports linking him to teams such as United's big-spending neighbours Manchester City and Real Madrid come to fruition.

Outside Old Trafford, fans were coming to terms with the news that one of their best players could soon be leaving, with student Siobhan Burke telling Reuters: "It'll be a sad loss, we'll be losing a star and we could struggle without him."

Others were hoping Rooney, who helped United to Premier League titles in 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the Champions League in 2008, did not move across town to City to join ex-team mate Carlos Tevez.

"Last season he was a hero, now he'll be a Judas like Tevez," said scarf seller Samuel Simpson.

"Since it's been announced, I've been selling the Rooney scarves at half price."

Yusuf hopes to take U-turn

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 05:57 AM

When Baroda take on Mumbai in their opening game of West Zone T20 league on Wednesday, one man who is keen to do well for Baroda is Yusuf Pathan. After losing his place in the ODI squad, the Baroda skipper Yusuf wants to make lost ground.

"I know that all eyes will be on me, and there are many youngsters who will be playing for Baroda this season. As a senior player, I will have to try to pass on my experience to them. At the same time I will start planning my comeback. Once you have played cricket at international level, it's natural that people look up to you," said Yusuf, who last played in India blues when on the Zimbabwe tour four months ago.

Baroda will miss Irfan Pathan, who is recovering from a back injury but still the elder Pathan states his young brigade will cope with the pressure. With Ambati Rayudu moving from Hyderabad to Baroda this season, Yusuf feels that the Mumbai Indians middle-order batsman can play a decisive role for his team.

"His inclusion no doubt will be a boost especially since he is in-form. His first-class experience will come as a big help. Once the season starts a lot will be at stake for him," he adds.

Yusuf is aware that a few good knocks in the T20 tournament won't make much of a difference. The real challenge will starts once the four-day Ranji Trophy commences from November 1 and the Pathan brothers will be eyeing it as a platform to make comebacks. After being dropped once, Yusuf had won a recall with his superb performance in Duleep Trophy last season, where he slammed a double hundred to guide West Zone to an emphatic win. "Domestic is very important," he says, trying to explain how the next four months would be crucial for him.

"It will be a fresh start, not only for me but for Irfan too. I'm confident with the way I'm batting but at the same time I want to help my team win. In Challengers I batted well but I think the real test starts once the Ranji season starts. Hope these three months will be the best for me," Yusuf explains.

TFA boys win, fail to impress

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 05:53 AM

In a closely fought contest Tata Football Academy, Jamshedpur defeated Uttarakhand Police 2-1 in the Durand Cup qualifers here. A regular in the tournament since the early 1990's, TFA's runner-up finish in 1995 has been their best showing to date. But the present batch of TFA boys don't seem to be in the same league. Their inexperience was evident in their dribbling and passing. Besides, their lack of fitness peeped through in the closing stages of the game.

TFA coach Vijay Kumar was quick to emphasise that his boys were anything but finished products and many of his first-team players were not available for Durand Trophy. "TFA grooms players from the age of 16 to 19. We usually play our senior-most boys in this tournament. But this time many have other commitments. Out of our first playing 11, six players are in China with the Indian squad preparing for the Asian under-19 Youth Championships. Two of our stars are injured. In effect we are playing with just three of our regular players. The rest are boys who have just joined the Academy, so we are really not at our strongest," he said.

TFA started off strongly as they strung together several series of passes. A defence splitting pass in the 7th minute found Pankaj Sona, who completed a nerveless finish. However, as the TFA youngsters looked to add to their early strike, Uttarakhand Police looked to counter strike. TFA goalkeeper Gurdeep Singh had a big role to play in keeping the rival strikers at bay. He saved a couple of chances including a one-on-one moment against Veer Singh Negi. However Uttarakhand Police kept the pressure up and found the equaliser in the 30th minute when Negi made the most of a perfectly placed through-ball from Ashok Singh.

In the second half, the action grew lethargic as the TFA side which was creating most chances in the first half began to tire. The match seemed to be heading for a dull finish, but in the 75th minute 16-year-old Udanta Singh of Manipur found space in the right flank, produced a impressive burst of speed and his volley beat the Uttarakhand Police custodian. That proved to be winning goal of the match.

There will be stronger competition ahead for the side from Jamshedpur, which will pose a tougher test for them. However coach Vijay Kumar explains that for most of the players the tournament would be more of a learning experience than a career defining event. " Back home in Jamshedpur, we don't really have any team on a similar level. So at the Durand we have a chance to see where we stand."

Ronaldo inspires Real Madrid to win over Milan

Wed, Oct 20 10 03:17 AM

Cristiano Ronaldo scored and set up another goal for Mesut Ozil less than a minute later as Real Madrid beat AC Milan 2-0 to seize control of Champions League Group G on Tuesday.

Jose Mourinho's young Real side, playing with energy and pace, dominated an ageing Milan team and the La Liga giants cemented their place at the top of the group with three wins in three matches.

After a fast-paced opening 10 minutes with few clear chances, Ronaldo struck in the 13th minute with a fierce freekick that flew through the Milan wall.

Within the visitors reeling, he then sprinted in from the left wing to feed Ozil on the edge of the penalty area and the German international's first-time shot ballooned up off the back of central defender Daniele Bonera and into the net.

Real, who went top of La Liga at the weekend, are flying in their bid for a 10th title in Europe's elite club competition and are yet to concede a goal in this year's edition.

Andrea Pirlo was the first Milan player to threaten the home goal in the 29th minute with his side already two goals down.

Iker Casillas had to be alert to keep out the midfielder's fierce freekick before former Real player Clarence Seedorf blazed over from a good position wide on the left.

In the second half, Real's forwards created a string of chances with Gonzalo Higuain, Ronaldo and Angel Di Maria all going close to a third.

A toothless Milan, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexandre Pato labouring up front, rarely threatened and former Real player Robinho, who replaced the ineffective Ronaldinho with around 20 minutes remaining, was roundly whistled every time he touched the ball.

PREVIEW - Rooney revelation overshadows home clash

Published>Wed, Oct 20 10 01:37 AM

Wayne Rooney will be absent when Manchester United face Bursaspor in the Champions League on Wednesday and, as Alex Ferguson revealed on the eve of the game, Old Trafford fans will almost certainly have to get used to it.

Rooney, who made his spectacular United debut against Turkish opposition with a hat-trick in a 6-2 thrashing of Fenerbahce in 2004, has told Ferguson of his desire to leave and the manager will not play him on Wednesday because of injury.

United fans should get a look at the future that awaits them with the Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov likely to partner Mexican striker Javier Hernandez up front.

But while all the talk in England has been of Rooney and the United forward line, Bursaspor will have been interested to note yet another example of United's frailty in defence in their 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.

United had been looking comfortable at 2-0 up only to throw away victory and a fifth draw in eight Premier League games this season means they are already five points adrift of leaders Chelsea in fourth place.

They should get back to winning ways against Bursaspor, move to seven points and into a strong position to advance from Group C.

Ferguson, though, will be wary of another upset against Turkish opposition.

United lost at home to Besiktas last season in their first home European defeat for four years, although by then they had qualified for the knockout stages of the 2009-10 competition.

In 1996, Fenerbahce handed United their first home defeat ever in the Champions League/European Cup.

Bursaspor, however, are not in that class. They have lost their last six European games without scoring and have never scored in their five European away matches. In this campaign they lost 1-0 at Rangers and were thumped 4-0 at home by Valencia.

They also drew 2-2 at the weekend, against Karabukspor, and lead the Turkish league with 20 points from eight games.

Coach Ertugrul Saglam, whose Besiktas team was hammered 8-0 by Liverpool three years ago, travels to Old Trafford in a positive mood.

"United are going through a troubled time," he said. "There is no reason why we cannot return to Turkey with a surprise result."

Saglam, too, is involved in a delicate man-management issue. Winger Volkan Sen was left out of the squad against Karabukspor as punishment for travelling to the United States without permission, but he is expected to return to the side against United.

Probable teams:

Manchester United: 1-Edwin van der Sar; 21-Rafael Da Silva, 5-Rio Ferdinand, 15-Nemanja Vidic, 3-Patrice Evra; 24-Darren Fletcher, 16-Michael Carrick, 8-Anderson, 17-Nani, 9-Dimitar Berbatov, 14-Javier Hernandez.

Bursaspor: 27-Dimitar Ivankov; 21-Ali Tandogan, 4-Omer Erdogan, 38-Ibrahim Ozturk, 3-Gokcek Vederson; 10-Volkan Sen, 13-Gustav Svensson, 7-Federico Insua, 20-Ozan Ipek; 17-Pablo Batalla, 22-Turgay Bahadir.

FACTBOX - Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney

Wed, Oct 20 10 12:57 AM

REUTERS - England striker Wayne Rooney has told Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson he wants to quit the club.

Here are some details about Rooney:

Born: 24th October, 1985 in Liverpool

* FEARED STRIKER

Rooney, who can operate effectively as a lone striker or alongside a bigger target man, has it all -- an ability to run at defenders, lead the line, play as a second striker and track back into deeper roles. But the main reason defenders fear him so much is his clinical finishing.

* EARLY CAREER

-- Rooney made his Everton first team debut as a 16-year-old in a season-opener against Tottenham Hotspur in Aug. 2002 after coming through Everton's youth academy.

-- In October 2002 he became Everton's youngest ever scorer, with two goals in a 3-0 League Cup win at Wrexham. He also became the youngest Premier League scorer with a match-winner to end Arsenal's 30-match unbeaten run.

-- Manchester United and Premier League rivals Newcastle United became locked in bidding war for the 18-year-old and on Aug. 31 2004, United reached an agreement to sign Rooney. Ferguson paid 25.6 million pounds ($40.40 million) for the player.

* PLAYING FOR MANCHESTER UNITED:

-- Rooney has made 289 appearances for United, scoring 132 goals.

-- By the end of the 2004/05 season, his first with the club, Rooney had amassed 17 goals in 43 appearances and was named PFA Young Player of the Year.

-- Scored 19 goals in his second season at Old Trafford and then in 2006-07 he netted 23 times as United won their first English title in three years

-- The 2009-10 season represented the pinnacle of Rooney's goalscoring career, as he scored 34 goals in 42 games in all competitions for United. At the 5-0 thrashing of Wigan at the DW Stadium on August 22, 2009, he scored his 100th and 101st goals for the club.

-- Rooney scored the winning goal in the 2010 League Cup final and though United missed out on domestic and European glory, he was rewarded for an impressive campaign with the PFA Players' Player of the Year Award.

* PLAYING FOR ENGLAND:

-- Rooney has been capped 68 times and has scored 26 goals.

-- He made his full England debut in the 2-0 Euro 2004 qualifying win over Turkey at Sunderland in April 2003. He became in Sept. 2003 the youngest ever England goalscorer at 17 years 317 days in a 2-1 Euro 2004 qualifying victory in Macedonia.

-- Rooney scored four times in the Euro 2004 finals before England bowed out in the quarter-finals to Portugal.

-- Almost missed the 2006 World Cup finals after suffering a foot injury two months before the start of the tournament. He failed to score in games against Trinidad & Tobago and Sweden and his tournament ended in misery after he was sent off in the quarter-final defeat by Portugal.

-- The striker was billed as a possible Golden Boot winner before the 2010 World Cup and the man to lead England to a first World Cup triumph in 44 years, however the striker's limp, goalless performances led to an early England exit in the second round.

Barca's Xavi battling to be fit to face Copenhagen

Tue, Oct 19 10 11:57 PM

Barcelona playmaker Xavi is making progress in his recovery from a nagging Achilles tendon injury but is not certain to start against FC Copenhagen on Wednesday, coach Pep Guardiola said.

The Spain international has been trying to shake off the injury for several weeks and it forced him off in the second half of Barca's 2-1 La Liga victory over Valencia on Saturday.

"He finished (the Valencia game) with some discomfort and since then he's been improving," Guardiola told a news conference ahead of Wednesday's Champions League Group D clash at the Nou Camp.

"He is unique in many ways but there are alternatives and several players who can do a good job," he added.

Barca central defender Gabriel Milito will definitely miss the Copenhagen game after he damaged a thigh muscle in training on Monday, while forward Pedro is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Copenhagen top Group D on six points from two matches, with Barca second on four ahead of Rubin Kazan on one and Panathinaikos on zero.

At an earlier news conference, forward Lionel Messi said Barca would miss Xavi if he failed to shake off his injury in time.

"Xavi is extremely important for how he plays and how he dictates play," the Argentina international said.

"In any case, we have enough reserves if he doesn't make it as we have a very strong squad," he added.

ICC mulls proposal to use undercover agents as bookies

Tue, Oct 19 10 11:21 PM

Melbourne, Oct 19 (PTI) In light of the recent spot fixing scandal involving Pakistani cricketers, the ICC is considering a proposal where undercover agents posing as illegal bookmakers will approach cricketers to see if they report any suspicious encounters. Players who do not report the approaches would be penalised under the anti-corruption code, with sanctions ranging from warnings to fines and suspensions, the ''Sydney Morning Herald'' reported. Although in the initial stage, if ICC accepts the proposal then it would be for the first time that in any sports undercover agents would be used. ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat is considering the viability of the proposal. "We are thinking of setting up our own approaches to players, to see if they report it, we will think out of the box," Lorgat told the paper. "It is only a tentative plan at this stage, we are working on a number of measures to combat corruption. We are not sitting on our hands. We are being as proactive as we can in ensuring the integrity of the game is maintained," Lorgat said. If the plan is approved at the ICC''s next meeting, players could be approached by undercover operatives during the Ashes and next year''s World Cup. Australian players Shane Watson, Brad Haddin, Brett Lee and David Warner had reported approaches from suspicious characters in the past 18 months. Watson and Haddin were approached by the same man - identified later as having links to illegal Indian bookmakers - during last year''s tour of England for the Ashes and World Twenty20. Pakistan''s suspended trio of Test skipper Salman Butt, and pacemen Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir face serious penalties if the ICC proves they were guilty of spot-fixing during the series against England. The trio have appealed against their suspensions and will front separate hearings later this month in Qatar.

"After the first two goals were scored against us, the Australian team enhanced its attack. We couldn''t reply to the pressure mounting on us," he said. PCB chief to be grilled by ICC on Saturday

Tue, Oct 19 10 10:21 PM

Karachi, Oct 19 (PTI) Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt will be grilled by the special task force of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday in a teleconference, a PCB source said today. Reliable sources said that the teleconference was due to be held on Saturday basically to discuss and review the measures taken by the PCB to improve its governance and implement recommendations of the ICC made to the PCB at the last executive board meeting held early this month in Dubai. "Butt will be asked about the steps taken by the PCB to enforce the recommendations made by the ICC board which is not willing to give much leeway to the Chairman now," one source told PTI. He said that at the last ICC board meeting, Butt had been clearly told that either he needed to put his house in order and seriously pursue implementing the anti-corruption measures recommended by the ICC for face possible sanctions. "The ICC board means business and during the teleconference the task committee formed to look into Pakistan cricket affairs will find out from Butt about the steps being taken by him to improve governance plus the recent successful holding of the national T20 championship in Lahore that attracted big crowds," the source added. The source also disclosed the PCB was already under pressure because of the spot fixing allegations against Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir. "The problem now facing the PCB is that the England, Australian, New Zealand and South African boards have told the ICC that there should be no leniency shown towards the suspended trio. "The Presidents of the three boards have pressed on the ICC that it needs to take action against the trio because they had brought a bad name to the image of cricket on a whole," the source said. He said so far India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and West Indies had not shown support for the strong stance taken by the four other boards on the spot fixing issue but the PCB was worried about future developments.

World Cup credibility in hands of ex-Swiss forward

Published>Tue, Oct 19 10 10:17 PM

Two decades after quitting as a player, former Swiss striker Claudio Sulser may be about to make a far bigger mark on the game as head of the FIFA body investigating the credibility of the World Cup bidding process.

On Wednesday, Sulser and the ethics committee he chairs will start looking into allegations that executive committee members Reynald Temarii of Tahiti and Nigeria's Amos Adamu offered to sell their votes in the contest.

The committee will also probe suspicions of collusion between unnamed bidding nations, which was a risk from the moment FIFA decided that it would decide the hosts for two World Cups at the same time in early December.

Sulser netted 13 goals for Switzerland and once finished as top scorer in the European Cup while playing for Grasshoppers Zurich and while his career was more than respectable it is fair to say he has never been in the spotlight like he is now.

FIFA on Tuesday said it was too early to comment on whether a bidding nation could ultimately be disqualified for a serious breach of the rules.

With only the 24 executive committee members entitled to vote, the allegations are a blow to the credibility of the bidding process, which is due to reach a climax on Dec. 2 when FIFA announces the two winners in Zurich.

Sulser never played in the World Cup but his committee must now try to limit damage that FIFA can ill-afford to the event which is the main reason for its existence.

"The information in the article has created a very negative impact on FIFA and on the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said in a statement.

ELECTORAL CAMPAIGNING

Bidding nations have to obey guidelines which ban monetary gifts, collusion between national associations or criticism of other bids or the process itself.

The FIFA bidding process is still often compared unfavourably to the system the IOC uses for the Olympic Games, which was greatly tightened up following the bribery scandal involving the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics and where more than 100 IOC members have the vote.

Since the 2002 Salt Lake scandal, the IOC has prohibited visits to bid cities by any of its members, apart from the official evaluation commission that reports on the quality of the bids prior to the election.

One of the most striking aspects of the FIFA process is the openness of electoral campaigning and canvassing of executive committee members by bidding countries.

One case was Spain's trip to South America -- their first for 29 years -- to play a friendly in Argentina.

From a playing point of view, it seemed less than ideal as the world champions had to cram the trip in between a Euro 2012 qualifier in Liechtenstein and the following weekend's domestic league matches.

"This is not just about football, it's a commitment to a country with which we have close ties," said coach Vicente del Bosque after the Liechtenstein game.

The Spanish daily Marca reported that on the eve of the match, Spanish officials, whose country are jointly bidding with for the 2018 tournament along with Portugal, met Argentine FA president Julio Grondona, a member of the FIFA executive committee at a reception in Buenos Aires.

CARAMEL BISCUITS

The newspaper gave full details of the event, telling readers that guests drank Rutini wine and ate alfajores, caramel-filled biscuits typical of Argentina.

It quoted Grondona as saying that "the 2018 World Cup should go to Spain".

Last month also saw David Beckham, who is helping the England bid for 2018, visit another executive committee member Jack Warner in his native Trinidad & Tobago.

This was also well publicised as was the visit of Ruud Gullit, president of the joint Netherlands/Belgium bid for 2018, to Paraguay to meet South American Confederation president Nicolas Leoz, another executive committee member.

Meanwhile Paraguay's national team, which often struggles to find friendlies due to the country's low profile and lack of away fans, has turned into a globe-trotting outfit, recently playing matches in China, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

It can of course be argued that such visits are part of the interchanges which are crucial to the game's global development.

But the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) made no bones as to why members of the Russian 2018 bid had visited its president Ricardo Teixeira in Rio de Janeiro last month.

"The director general of Russia's 2018 bid, Alexei Sorokin, asked Ricardo Teixeira, who is one of the executive committee voters, for support for the Russian bid," it said.

FIFA executive committee member Chuck Blazer argued that a smaller electoral college was a good thing.

He told Reuters: "By having a small body decide where the World Cup will be held, you also can identify the people responsible for choosing the World Cup venue -- the executive committee -- because they are the same people responsible for making it work."

Yousuf suffers hamstring injury before South Africa series

Tue, Oct 19 10 10:07 PM

Karachi, Oct 19 (PTI) Pakistan former captain and senior batsman Muhammad Yousuf has become a doubtful starter for the forthcoming one-day and Twenty20 series against South Africa in the United Arab Emirates. Sources said that Yousuf had strained his hamstring and had taken rest from the training camp currently underway in Lahore. "The initial MRI scans have shown that he has suffered ''Grade A'' injury that will require two to three weeks for a complete recovery," a source said. He said this basically meant that the senior batsman was ruled out of the one-day series in Abu Dhabi and Dubai that begins from October 26. Pakistan team manager Intikhab Alam today told the reporters that he couldn''t immediately give a definite report on Yousuf''s fitness but would keep the media updated on his injury situation. The conditioning camp is being held to prepare the selected players for the coming series that includes two Twenty20 matches, five one-dayers and two Tests. The first T20 match will be held as a charity fund raiser for the flood victims in Pakistan. Sources added since the selectors had already finalised a 17-member squad for the one-day and T20 series against the Proteas, they would not announce a replacement for Yousuf who would be fit in time for the Test series next month. Intikhab said that opener Shahzaib Hasan, who was a late inclusion in the squad, also reported for the camp today. PTI Corr SHN

Poonia ready to face Dani anywhere in the world: Virender

Tue, Oct 19 10 09:21 PM

New Delhi, Oct 19 (PTI) Commonwealth Games gold medallist discus thrower Krishna Poonia is ready to face world champion Dani Samuels for the USD 20,000 winner-takes-all contest anywhere in the world as long as the Asian Games preparation is not compromised, said her husband Virender. Australian media had reported that Samuels was hurt by Poonia''s pre-Games comment that her "poor form" was the reason behind her pull out from the just-concluded CWG and she now wants a ''revenge match''. Poonia''s husband Virender said Krishna was ready to face the challenge anywhere but they would not compromise on the preparation of the Asian Games next month. "Krishna is preparing for the Asian Games. So we won''t compromise on her training. If she (Dani) wants to compete with her before the Asian Games then let her come to India. Krishna is ready to face her anywhere. Do it in USA if you want but it has to be within a week after the Games," Virender, who is also her coach, told PTI. "I don''t understand why she is making such a fuss. She should have competed then in Games. Krishna has been training for the last one year and after the Asiad she also needs rest. We will go home as we haven''t been there. So if she (Dani) wants to have a competition at that time, I don''t know if it would be possible," he added. Samuels had pulled out of the Commonwealth Games at the last minute citing health and safety concerns. Partizan want Belgrade derby played behind closed doors

Published>Tue, Oct 19 10 09:17 PM

Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade want Saturday's city derby at Red Star played behind closed doors or under tight security measures.

"Given the situation in the last 10 days or so we maintain the safest option would be to play the derby behind closed doors," Partizan president Dragan Djuric told Belgrade's B92 television on Tuesday.

"We want the match to go ahead but if it is to be played with fans present in the stadium we want written guarantees from Red Star, the Serbian FA and police that there will be water-tight security.

"If there was to be a repeat of the Genoa riots, Serbian sport would have a serious problem because the whole of Europe will be watching," said Djuric, referring to the national team's abandoned Euro 2012 qualifier in Italy last week.

Violence erupted in Genoa when Red Star fans attacked Serbia's team bus and in particular goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic, one of their former players who joined Partizan on loan from Sporting Lisbon in August.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Since he joined Partizan, Stojkovic has been targeted by diehard Red Star fans.

"As Partizan's president I will not allow a situation in which our players can be lynched," said Djuric ahead of his team's Champions League Group H match at Portuguese rivals Sporting Braga later on Tuesday.

"Serbian soccer will suffer disastrous consequences if any trouble breaks out at the derby."

Representatives of Partizan, Red Star, the Serbian FA and police are to meet on Wednesday to hammer our a security plan.

Serbian soccer has been rife with violence in the past 20 years and fixtures between Partizan and Red Star have been at the forefront, with fan clashes resulting in several deaths and thousands of serious injuries.

Red Star lead the 16-team first division with 22 points from eight matches, three ahead of second-placed Partizan who have won a record three league titles in a row.

INTERVIEW - Chairman Bjorn hits back at Donald criticism

Published>Tue, Oct 19 10 08:57 PM

Tournament Players Committee chairman Thomas Bjorn has hit back at Luke Donald after the Briton criticised the European Tour for raising the competitive appearances needed to retain full membership.

The tour said last week that for 2011 it will lift the amount of tournaments players have to compete in to qualify for membership from 12 to 13, the second increase in two years.

World number eight Donald, who has had a successful year on both sides of the Atlantic, told Reuters the new move "might end up backfiring on the tour".

Bjorn, however, said on Tuesday the fresh rules would not be asking too much of American-based players like Donald, world number seven Paul Casey and 23rd-ranked Justin Rose.

"I can't understand where Luke is coming from because for the whole good of the tour we can't take into consideration what one, two or three guys think," the Dane told Reuters in an interview ahead of this week's Castello Masters.

"I have nothing against players like Justin and Luke ... they can play wherever they like and that's down to them.

"We can't force players to change their lives and if any player says, 'if you want to do that then I'll just go and play my golf in America', that's their decision," added Bjorn.

"But rules are there and besides if you are inside the top-50, like most of the Europeans competing in America are, then we are not asking them to do something that is extremely difficult by having to now play 13 tournaments."

EXTRA TOURNAMENT

Donald, who finished third in the 2010 U.S. Tour's FedExCup series and lies 16th on the European Tour's money list, said last week he did not envisage an extra tournament being a problem personally.

The Englishman, though, said he could see fellow Europeans playing in the United States struggling to commit to 13 events.

"Every time they add a tournament it makes it a little bit more difficult," said Donald.

"It might end up backfiring on the European Tour if they try and push people to play too many European events. They might just say 'oh forget it'."

Donald's Ryder Cup team mates Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell also intend to play more golf in the U.S. next year but Bjorn said the European Tour had to protect its sponsors.

"We have to look after our tour, what this tour stands for and also our European Tour events," said the Dane.

"We are in a tough environment at the moment so we have to make it easier for them to keep sponsoring the events."

Unfair to blame KCA for ODI being called off: Shastri

Tue, Oct 19 10 08:37 PM

Kochi, Oct 19 (PTI) Former India captain Ravi Shastri today said it was "improper" on the part of former BCCI secretary S K Nair to blame Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) for abandoning of the first India-Australia ODI at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium here on October 17. Describing the statement as immature, Shastri told reporters "Even God could not have help in holding the match here." The first ODI had to be abandoned due to heavy rains in Kochi. Nair had criticised KCA for the match being abandoned, alleging that the ineffective drainage system at the stadium had resulted in calling off the match. Nair was also a former KCA office bearer. Shastri said such a situation would not have arisen if KCA had its own stadium and urged the state government to help the association get a stadium of its own. He refused to comment when asked about the Kochi IPL team, saying the franchisee had one more date to reply to the BCCI notice. On Indian speedster Sreesanth not finding a place in the ODI team, Shastri said Sreesanth was a Test match bowler. "He should get into the ODI squad after proving his ability in the Test match." Shastri hoped that Sreesanth would be part of the Indian team to South Africa.

Mohun Bagan rout Telegraph to record biggest win this season

Tue, Oct 19 10 08:07 PM

Kolkata, Oct 19 (PTI) Edeh Chidi and Subair Muritala Ali scored a hat-trick each as the reigning champions Mohun Bagan trounced George Telegraph 7-0 in the Sahara Kolkata Premier Division Football league here today. Federation Cup runners-up Mohun Bagan started the proceedings in a whirlwind fashion and Chidi sprung a surprise scoring inside forty-five seconds. He struck two more times before the lemon break. His fourth and 150th strike in India came from a free kick which he coverted effortlessly. Chidi''s partner and Nigerian Ali also scored a hat-trick to give Mohun Bagan the required confidence after their Federation Cup defeat to East Bengal in the summit clash early this month. The victory fetched the green and maroon total ten points from five games, but not enough for holders to scare table leaders East Bengal, who have 24 points from eight games followed by Techno Aryan''s 21 points from nine plays, another unbeaten outfit in this edition of domestic league. George Telegraph stayed put at five points after ten matches. Shaven-headed Chidi looked deadly whenever he moved with the ball and completed his first hat-trick this season into the stoppage time of first half. The beginning of second-half saw Ali scoring twice within ten minutes and had to wait for a penalty in the fag end of the game. As substitute Satish Kumar was fouled by GT''s defender Martin, referee Prabir Dhar signaled for the spot kick. Ali defeated GT goalkeeper Tonmoy Karmakar to score his first hat-trick of the season. Mohun Bagan could have scored ten goals and surpass their 8-0 win versus GT in 1970 had not Chidi, Ali and Kingshuk Debnath missed their sitters. The two hattricks were fifth in this edition, after East Bengal''s Bikash Narginari, Penn Orji and Chirag United''s Josimar da Silva Martins.

Juventus deserved stripped titles Del Piero tells trial

Tue, Oct 19 10 07:17 PM

Alessandro Del Piero, the highest profile player to be called so far as a witness in Italy's match-fixing trial, said on Tuesday his Juventus side had deserved the two Serie A titles which were stripped because of the scandal.

The long-running trial, which features former Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi as one the defendants, is the criminal equivalent of the sporting tribunal which took away the Turin side's 2005 and 2006 scudettos for procuring compliant referees.

Asked by a lawyer how many trophies he had won with Juve, Del Piero told the court: "It depends. I also count the two scudettos taken away. While I have been playing, I believe that every side that have won a championship have deserved it."

The former Italy forward, who has spent almost his entire career with Juventus, equalled Giampiero Boniperti's Juve record of 178 Serie A goals on Sunday and usually avoids controversy.

However, the soft-spoken 35-year-old is backing Juve's campaign for Inter Milan to have the 2006 league title which was awarded to them also stripped after new evidence suggested their rivals could have also been implicated in the scandal.

European champions Inter, bidding for their sixth straight Serie A title this season, deny wrongdoing but the Italian soccer federation has taken fresh phone tap evidence from the criminal trial in Naples which it is examining.

Several other Italian players and referees were heard as witnesses on Tuesday.
