Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert has confirmed they are still to receive the cash and has recently been asked by the orgainsers to submit an invoice to clear the way for the payment to the players, a development which did not go well with Australian domestic side. "I can''t remember having to invoice for prizemoney. We were advised during the tournament payment to the winner would be 20 business days at the conclusion of the competition, which indicated it would be late November," Gilbert was quoted as saying in the Daily Telegraph. ONGC, IOC enter last four

Deepak Jain Thu, Jan 07 10 09:39 PM

Mumbai, Jan 7 (PTI) Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and Indian Oil booked their berths in the semi finals of the 9th All India Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mahindra Stadium with contrasting victories here today. ONGC edged out youthful and gritty Namdhari XI by a narrow 2-1 margin after leading by a solitary goal at half time in the four-team Pool A while IOC thrashed local outfit Western Rly 5-1 after taking a 3-0 lead at the breather. The two oil outfits thus notched up their second successive wins in the pool and would take on each other in the concluding contest to decide the group toppers. ONGC''s clash with Namdhari saw their defence on top with Olympian Harpal Singh, their skipper, and goalkeeper Dinesh Ekka keeping their rivals at bay at the Mahindra Stadium. Crossing over, the oilmen increased the lead to 2-0 when Jayanta was successful with his drag-flick attempt off a penalty corner earned in the 51st minute. The Namdhari youths were reluctant to give up and two back-to-back penalty corner awards resulted in Gurpreet Singh converting one in the 54th minute. But Namdharis'' attempts to get the equaliser did not bear fruit with Harpal and ''keeper frustrating their moves. (MORE) PTI SSR AT SHN

Churchill sponsors threatens to cut ties

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 08:23 PM

The sponsors of Churchill Brothers said on Thursday that they would scrap their deal with the reigning I-League champions if molestation allegations against their players were found to be true.

"If Churchill players are found guilty, we will not hesitate to withdraw the sponsorship. If they were proved innocents, we will continue our association," Managing Director of Kunnath Pharmaceuticals T K Abraham said from Goa.

He was in Goa to talk to the officials of Churchill Brothers. "We would act depending on the outcome of the case," he said.

"Having come to know about the incident from media, we have come to Goa. We are meeting with Churchill officials today to know their version of what happened," he said.

Churchill Brothers president Joaquim Alemao however ruled out reports that their main sponsor was parting ways. Alemao said: "Nobody from Kunnath Pharmaceuticals has contacted me yet. These are baseless reports. Why should it affect sponsorship? It's a small incident and our players have already got bail."

He said they would soon file a defamation suit against the airline. "We will let you know very soon," he said.

The reigning I-League inked a record breaking sponsorship deal with Kunnath Pharmaceuticals, manufacturers of Musli Power X-tra, with the lucrative sponsorship amounting to be in excess of Rs 5 crore annually.

Nigerian duo of Odafe Okolie and Ogba Kalu Nnanna and Bengal's Arindam Bhattacharya were arrested on January 5 after they allegedly tried to molest an airhostess in a Spice Jet Kolkata-bound flight.

The team was off-loaded in Mumbai airport and were detained till 2 am yesterday before the trio was bailed out.

The team arrived in the city last afternoon to play their I-League match against Mohun Bagan.

RTI applies to Commonwealth Games organising committee

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 07:53 PM

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Thursday ruled that the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) fall under the ambit of the Right to Information (RTI) Act and have to provide information to an applicant.

Dismissing the appeals of the Games Organising Committee and the IOA against the Central Information Commission's (CIC) order to provide information, Justice Ravinder Bhatt ruled that both are public authorities under the RTI Act and have to provide information and cannot keep their accounts private.

'India is in the midst of challenges. The model chosen by the government of ensuring spread of welfare and its benefits, includes functioning through non-government agencies, who are tasked and assisted for this purpose. The crucial role of access to information here cannot be understated,' the bench said.

The CGOC had contended that it is an independent and autonomous body and not liable to reveal information under the RTI act.

On the other hand, the central government said that almost the whole budgetary support to the Games project is provided by the government and the committee cannot take the plea that it is an independent body.

'The IOA is a registered society. No doubt, there is no state or public involvement in its establishment, or administration. It does not receive grants as is traditionally understood. It is the national face of the Olympic movement in India. But the funds and the other interests incurred by the association is accountable. It is held that the IOA is a public authority under the meaning of that expression under the Act,' the bench ruled.

The dispute erupted after a person filed an RTI application in the sports ministry, seeking to know the details of payments made to actors Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan among others for taking them to the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony in Melbourne in 2006.

The CIC in November 2006 held that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was a public authority and directed it to provide the particulars of expenses incurred by it on tours in connection with the Commonwealth Games to the RTI applicant.

The court also asked Sanskriti School to provide information under the RTI act and said, 'The school has been substantially financed by the central government, through various departments, and agencies. It is therefore, covered by the regime of the Act.'

The school had argued that the school is only funded by the government but is running with the efforts of the wives of civil services officers.

Supercross, autocross competitions in Bangalore

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 07:29 PM

Bangalore, Jan 7 (IANS) To coincide with the launch of a unique 'adventure park' here, the Getiton Funventure will conduct dirt track supercross and autocross competitions for two and four-wheelers, respectively, over the weekend at their facility on the outskirts of the city.

Srikarunya, a well-known national rally participant who heads the Getiton Funventure, told a media conference here Thursday the venue is located on a 30-acre plot near the famous Bennarghatta National Park, and over a period of time, will be developed into a facility offering various forms of motor sport and other recreational activities.

'The unique venture, first of its kind in India, is designed to fulfill the growing needs of an increasing number of motor sport enthusiasts besides offering a multi-dimensional facility in related fields of activity,' he said.

The 'adventure park' offers separate 1.4 km long go-karting and rally track and a mountain bike trail, besides online and offline games.

The project also envisages 20 fully-furnished log cabins, an artists' village and well-appointed restaurants, Srikarunya said.

'We hope to conduct year-round activities that include motor sport competitions besides corporate events. Outside of the regular competitions, the adventure park will offer a hire-and-drive facility for serious enthusiasts to train and practice their driving and riding skills while providing a rare opportunity for the daring to experience the thrills of high-speed Rallying,' said Srikarunya.

For this, there are two fully-equipped state-of-the-art rally cars and five bikes that customers can hire on a time-bound basis. 'Over a period of time, we hope to increase the number of vehicles. It is our endeavour to provide a safe and controlled environment for motor sport enthusiasts,' he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Praneeth Perumal, FMSCI rally commission chairman, said: 'Infrastructure which promotes motor sports is missing in the country and this facility, the only one of its kind, fills that gap. Motor sports enthusiasts can now have a single point where they can do everything connected to the sport.'

Deepak Paul Chinnappa, who will be participating in four events, said that the facility was amazing. 'All the team members can have practice, tuning and everything at one stop without any hassles. We don't have this kind of facility anywhere in the country.'

Bangladesh set India a stiff 297-run target

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 07:09 PM

Dhaka, Jan 7 (IANS) Bangladesh put up a challenging total of 296 for six in 50 overs against India in the third ODI of the tri-nation series tournament here Thursday.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan decided to bat and the batsmen stood up to the task, raising their highest total against any Test playing nation at the Shere Bangla National Stadium at Mirpur.

Openers Tamim Iqbal (60) and Imrul Kayes (70) gave Bangladesh a good platform, scoring 80 runs in 11 overs. Indian bowlers fought back in the middle overs not allowing a big partnership to flourish. Mahmudullah, however, finished off with a flurry of fours, scoring an unbeaten 60 off just 45 balls.

Tamim played with confidence in his 42-ball 60 that came with 10 fours and a six. He got good support from the other end as Kayes stroked five fours and a six for his 100-ball 70. The two openers exploited batting-friendly conditions and made the Indian pace attack look ordinary.

Sreesnath broke the partnership as Tamim mistimed a pull to Gambhir. Mohammad Ashraful (29) and Kayes consolidated the innings with a 68-run stand.

Bangladesh then lost two wickets in a space of eight runs. Ashraful, who hit three fours, was bowled by left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja. Shakib was run out and Kayes was the next to go after addding 32 runs with Raqibul Hasan (32).

Harbhajan Singh got Raqib's wicket before Mahamudullah and Naeem Islam (15) scored some quick runs in the slog overs.

Mahamudullah stroked eight fours, three came in the last over of Sreesanth.

PREVIEW - Juve's Ferrara needs to win battle of rookies

Juventus' coach Ciro Ferrara arrives on the field before the start of the Italian Serie...

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 06:29 PM

Under pressure Juventus boss Ciro Ferrara is in desperate need of a victory against visiting AC Milan on Sunday (1945 GMT), in what promises to be an intriguing encounter against a side coached by fellow rookie Leonardo.

Third-placed Juve's laboured 2-1 win at Parma on Wednesday snapped a run of three defeats in all competitions but it did not end talk of Ferrara's job being on the line.

Indeed, speculation that Russia coach Guus Hiddink is being lined up as a replacement continues despite denials from the Turin club.

Milan, in contrast, are in fine fettle after a 5-2 demolition of Genoa that keeps them eight points behind leaders Inter Milan with a game in hand, and one point ahead of Juve.

Ferrara knows the grit his side displayed at Parma to grind out a result from another uninspired showing is unlikely to suffice this weekend.

"We won and we'll talk about my situation a little less for the next three days... until the next match," Ferrara told reporters.

"I know this world too well not to know what is in store, but I'm not worried about it. My concern is to resolve the problems we have, game after game.

"This determination might not be enough on Sunday, an improvement in our play is needed too."

The position of the two coaches has reversed since the start of the season, when Juve won their first four games and Leonardo looked to be the out-of-his-depth new boss as his side stuttered.

Now he is the toast of the Italian sports media for turning Milan into an attractive team with a clear identity that are still in the running in the Champions League, while Juve bowed out at the group stage.

Part of Ferrara's problem is that he has struggled to find a formation that brings out the best in Brazilian duo Felipe Melo and Diego, who have been disappointing since joining the club in big-money, close-season deals.

Leonardo, on the other hand, has settled on a system of play with an attacking trident that suits the talents of his Brazilians, Alexandre Pato and a revived Ronaldinho.

He has also shown his ability to adapt, successfully fielding David Beckham in an unusually advanced position against Genoa to cover for the injured Pato in the England winger's first match since returning to Milan on loan from LA Galaxy.

Pato is a doubt for Sunday's game along with Clarence Seedorf after the Dutchman also missed the Genoa clash.

Defender Martin Caceres will be suspended for Juventus because he was sent off at Parma and forward David Trezeguet looks set to miss out with an ankle problem.

Inter will be able to gain ground on at least one of their title rivals by beating bottom side Siena at home on Saturday (1945).

Forward Mario Balotelli will be suspended, defender Cristian Chivu is set for a long spell out after fracturing his skull during Inter's 1-0 win at Chievo Verona on Wednesday and midfielder Patrick Vieira is poised to join Manchester City.

Jeev back in top 50 of world rankings

Deepak Jain Thu, Jan 07 10 05:47 PM

Sentosa (Singapore), Jan 7 (PTI) Seasoned Indian golfer Jeev Milkha Singh returned to the top 50 of world rakings, benefitting from new regulations which would now brighten his chances of playing in the US Masters in April. The Indian star was one of the beneficiaries of new regulations that came into effect in the first week of this year. If he manages to stay in the elite bracket till the end of March, it would guarantee Jeev a fourth appearance in the year''s opening Major at Augusta National, as well as the other Majors and World Golf Championships events. "With the introduction of a maximum divisor in the way the world rankings are tabulated, Singh''s divisor was adjusted from 66 to the maximum of 60 this week, which meant an increase in his average ranking points," the Asian Tour said in a statement. As he has playing rights on the US PGA Tour this year, Jeev will have every opportunity to further improve his rankings with strong performances. It has been a Masters tradition over the years for Augusta National to invite the reigning Asian Tour number one. In July last year, the Governing Board of the Official World Golf Ranking approved a measure to introduce a "Maximum Divisor" into the World Ranking system. This divisor will be for a player''s last 52 events - the current average number of events played by the world''s top 200 players over the two-year ranking cycle.

Force India's Sutil itching to beat idol Schumacher

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 05:37 PM

Adrian Sutil was among the legion of wide-eyed, awe-struck Germans who spent their teens admiring Michael Schumacher but the Force India driver cannot wait to unhorse the idol of his teens in this year's Formula One championship.

Sutil was just being ushered into the go-karting world by his elder brother when Schumacher joined Ferrari and went on to become, at least statistically, the best F1 driver ever before quitting in 2006.

Sutil welcomed the seven-time world champion's return to Formula One grid with Mercedes and felt it would be a great incentive for all other drivers to compete against, and possibly outrace, the German legend.

"Michael's return is a great news for motorsports, us and Michael himself," Sutil said during his interaction with journalists in New Delhi.

"He is a genius, a hero of motorsports we all admire. So it's nice to have him back. But at the same time, it's every driver's dream to beat him once and prove that they are better than him! He is a hero for me as well. But at the end of the day, you have to fight for your position and doesn't matter who's hero and who's driving. You want to be in the front, at any cost. How it happens, at whose cost, doesn't matter," said the lanky German, who scored his maiden points for Force India in the Italian Grand Prix where he came fourth.

Schumacher, a Ferrari advisor post-retirement, was tipped for a comeback last year as Felipe Massa's replacement but neck injuries came in the way.

Much to the delight of his fans, the 41-year-old German announced his comeback last month with Mercedes even though Formula One pundits are unsure if he would be able to reach the dizzy heights of his Ferrari days.

Sutil, meanwhile, warned fellow drivers not to underestimate Schumacher, saying the F1 veteran would not have staged a comeback if he had any self-doubts.

"I would say that he probably feels that he can be very competitive, otherwise he would not have done it," Sutil said.

"He is so professional and knows better than anyone what it takes to become the world champion. And he thinks for himself. If he had doubts that he probably cannot make it anymore, Michael would not have come out of retirement. He would have stayed out of Formula One. The guy is sure that he still fast enough," Sutil said.

"That is what I feel. I really feel that he can be a strong competitor again and he would do whatever it takes to be back in the front and lead every race. Formula One would be quite exciting this year, for sure," he added.

Knives out for Yousuf, Akmal

Deepak Jain Thu, Jan 07 10 05:31 PM

Karachi, Jan 7 (PTI) Knives were out today for Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf, wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal and the team management after the country''s humiliating defeat in the Sydney Test against Australia. The aftermath of the 36-run defeat evoked angry reactions from former cricketers and administrators, who were scathing in their attack on the team for its shocking collapse after dominating the Test for the first three days. The Sydney debacle prompted a statement from the Presidential spokesman who appealed for calm and patience from everyone. "Charitable Pakistan Hand Australia Sydney Win", "Clumsy, Irresponsible Players Throw Away Match" were some of the headlines in the newspapers, reflecting the angry mood of the country. Former pacer Sarfraz Nawaz lashed out at Yousuf''s captaincy and demanded axing of the entire team management. "I think the selectors now need to give more opportunities to younger players so that we can move ahead. This management needs to be sacked as they are unable to provide proper support to the players," he said. Even former captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, a close Yousuf friend who allegedly orchestrated behind-the-scenes movements to oust Younus Khan and elevate Yousuf, criticised the team. More PTI COR MRM AY

England stumble to 179-5 against South Africa

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 05:21 PM

England stumbled to 179 for five at lunch on the final day of the third test against South Africa on Thursday as wickets for Dale Steyn and Paul Harris moved the hosts closer to squaring the series.

Thoughts of a record run-chase of 466 were long gone as England sought instead to survive 90 overs after starting the day on 132 for three at Newlands.

Jimmy Anderson, sent in on Wednesday as a nightwatchman, battled on for 46 minutes on Thursday, taking his score to nine off 52 balls before he was caught brilliantly by Ashwell Prince at leg slip after edging a full toss from Harris on to his boot.

Steyn, the spearhead of the South African attack, bowled two short spells of three overs and, in his fifth over of the day, ripped a delivery back into Jonathan Trott bowling him for 42.

Paul Collingwood (8 not out) and Ian Bell (12 not out) were the batsmen digging in at lunch, having survived for over half an hour together.

South Africa need to win the match if they are to go into the final test, in Johannesburg from Jan. 14, with a chance of taking the series. England's innings victory in the second test in Durban last week put them 1-0 up.

BCCI late in paying prize money to CL winners NSW

Deepak Jain Thu, Jan 07 10 05:17 PM

Melbourne, Jan 7 (PTI) BCCI may be the world''s richest cricket board but it doesn''t seem to be the fastest in releasing money and has not yet paid the USD 2.7 million prize money to inaugural Champions League Twenty20 winners New South Wales. The Australian side had won the tournament after beating Trinidad and Tobago in Hyderabad in October last year but Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert said they are yet to get the prize money. "We were advised during the tournament payment to the winner would be 20 business days at the conclusion of the competition, which indicated it would be late November. But now we''re in January and we haven''t seen anything. It''s certainly not panic stations, but we''d like to see the money soon," he was quoted as saying by Daily Telegraph. Gilbert said Cricket Australia was aware of the delay in payment but dismissed suggestion that it had any impact on the ongoing domestic Big Bash competition. "The players have been tolerant and we''ve made it clear we can''t pay them until the money is received. The matter has had absolutely zero impact on this season''s competition. There are no ''ifs'' or ''buts'' - we will get paid," he said. Cricket NSW will pocket half the prize money with the other half to be divided among the players.

Emirates vows to honour 100-mn pound deal with Arsenal

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 05:11 PM

London, Jan 7 (ANI): Emirates, the official shirt and stadium sponsors of Arsenal, has insisted that they will honour their 15-year 100 million pound deal despite the financial crisis..

The Gunners and Emirates Airlines agreed the package in 2004. It has been suggested the club would renegotiate the shirt deal, which has five seasons to run.

But Emirates will remain the Premier League club's chosen backers and the company reiterated their commitment, The Sun reports.

Emirates sponsorships manager Stuart Priestly said: "You can engage with 60,000 people at the Emirates Stadium and collectively a lot more. We want to work with Arsenal. I travel the world through my job and I can watch Arsenal wherever I am. The Emirates Stadium name always comes out."

Despite Arsenal not winning a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup, Priestly insists backing Arsene Wenger's side is still a sound investment.

"When you have a team like Arsenal, the way they play is very stylish, it's a great mix. Everything about the relationship is very good," he said.

Chairman and chief executive of the Emirates Airline and Group, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum says the firm is committed to investing in sport.

"We invest around one per cent of Emirates' total revenue on sponsorship, promotions and media relations. We committed to spend more than 125 million pound from 2007 until 2014 when we signed up as an official partner with FIFA. This is a long-term thing," Al-Maktoum said. (ANI)

Yousuf stands by struggling Kamran, rules out resting him for Hobart Test

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 05:05 PM

Lahore, Jan 7(ANI): Pakistan skipper Mohammad Yousuf has ruled out the option of resting wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal for the third Test against Australia in Hobart despite his dismal performance behind the stumps so far on the tour.

Kamran dropped Australian middle-order batsman Michael Hussey thrice off leg-spinner Danish Kaneria's bowling, on 27, 45 and 52, and also wasted a perfect opportunity to run out opener Shane Watson in the Sydney Test.

Hussey went to score an undefeated 134 runs, while Watson gave Australia a perfect start with his 97 runs and played a crucial role in Pakistan's shocking 36-run defeat.

"Things like this happen in cricket. Kamran is always trying his best. You tell me, how can we afford to give him (Kamran) a rest. He is such a good batsman. He scored well in New Zealand and we need him here," The Nation quoted Yousuf, as saying.

Yousuf further said that as the captain he wants to back his players, especially when they are struggling.

"One should back his players when they are struggling with form. Look at Ricky Ponting, he is getting support from every quarter even when he is not scoring many runs," Yousuf said.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has called up wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed as a cover for Akmal and he will be flying to Australia on Thursday. (ANI)

Yousuf blames Twenty20 for Sydney debacle

Deepak Jain Thu, Jan 07 10 04:45 PM

Karachi, Jan 7 (PTI) Continuing his tirade against Twenty20, embattled Pakistan captain Mohammad Yousuf today blamed the proliferation of this format for his team''s bizarre defeat in the Sydney Test against Australia. Chasing 176 for a win, Pakistan imploded in their second innings for just 139 and Yousuf had no doubt that some of the players are interested only in Twenty20 and lacked the Test match temperament. "We had a golden chance to finally beat Australia in Australia and we let it go ourselves due to poor batting. I think the target of 176 runs was perfectly gettable on the Sydney pitch on the fourth day of the Test," Yousuf told a television channel. "I get a feeling that most of the players are more interested in playing Twenty20 cricket. There is no doubt that Twenty20 cricket is affecting the ability of batsmen to play long innings in Test matches and it is something we need to look at in Pakistan," he said. Even before the Test match, Yousuf had warned that Twenty20 would ruin Pakistan cricket since batsmen are getting fast money playing in lucrative tournaments and did not bother to play Test cricket. Incidentally, it was Yousuf''s defensive tactics that let Australia off the hook in the second Test, prompting former players to demand sacking of the captain. More PTI COR AY

Tiger Woods' 'mistress' Loredana Jolie takes up golf

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 04:37 PM

New York, Jan 7 (ANI): Tiger Woods' alleged mistress Loredana Jolie has developed a passion for golf and is planning to enter the tournament circuit.

According to a representative for Jolie, she has learned a lot more from the golfing champ than just tricks in the bedroom.

She is taking intensive golf lessons and planned to go on the amateur tournament circuit.

"Loredana has quite a talent for golf, though I don't know if she learned anything from Tiger . . . She is not worried that it might bring her face-to-face with Tiger," the New York Post quoted the rep as saying.

The representative also said that Jolie suffered a "nervous breakdown" after her name came to light last month as the 10th woman alleged to have had sex with Woods.

Jolie is also ready to publish a tell-all book about her alleged trysts with Woods, including claims about his appetite "for threesomes and girl-on-girl sex parties," her rep said. (ANI)

Former players demand sacking of Yousuf and Alam

Deepak Jain Thu, Jan 07 10 04:25 PM

Karachi, Jan 7 (PTI) Pakistan''s shocking defeat in the Sydney Test against Australia has the entire nation seething in anger with former players today demanding sacking of captain Mohammad Yousuf, coach Intikhab Alam and even cricket board chief Ejaz Butt. The aftermath of the 36-run defeat could be sensed from the fact that it also prompted a statement from the Presidential spokesman who appealed for calm and patience from everyone. The appeal, however, did little to placate the angry former players like Inzamam-ul Haq, Aamer Sohail, Moin Khan and Rashid Latif and administrators, who demanded that heads, should roll. Former Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Nasim Ashraf felt it was embarrassing to lose a match after dominating the first three days and said Yousuf should be stripped of captaincy. "What happened in the Test was so embarrassing. It made a complete mockery of Pakistan cricket and the entire team management. The captain should be fired for it," Ashraf demanded. Also training the guns on the coach, Ashraf said, "If Yousuf was not right in his cricketing decisions there was also the team management led by coach, Intikhab Alam which could have guided him into changing his strategy." Ex-captain Moin Khan held a similar view and felt both Yousuf anb Alam were to be blamed for the debacle. More PTI Cor AY MRM

Beckham may have nowhere to play after Milan loan ends

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 04:15 PM

London, Jan 7 (ANI): Ace England midfielder David Beckham may have nowhere to play once his AC Milan loan ends in May, as the Major League Soccer faces a strike.

International players union FIFPro is deadlocked in talks with the MLS about a new deal for all players in the US.

And the league is threatening a lockout if a new contract is not signed by January 31, The Sun reports.

FIFPro claim the MLS contract structure, which covers LA Galaxy's England ace midfielder Beckham, violates FIFA rules over transfers and freedom of movement.

"It's difficult to understand why the owners would take this course when all we're asking for are the same rights enjoyed by other players around the world," Everton's on-loan US star Landon Donovan said.

Ex-Spurs keeper Kasey Keller, now playing for Seattle, added: "We can't compete internationally with a system that is so radically different."

MLS chief Mark Abbott said: "MLS owners created a structure that has provided stability and growth." (ANI)

Commonwealth Boxing: Australia pulls out, Canada doubtful

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 04:01 PM

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS) Australia have pulled out while Canada are doubtful for the Commonwealth Boxing Championships to be held here March 10-18.

Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) secretary general P.K. Muralidharan Raja said Thursday that Australia have cited prior commitments for their absence.

'Barring Australia, all other member nations have confirmed their participation in the Commonwealth Championships. Canada are yet to confirm their participation. We will see nearly 120 boxers from 15-16 countries taking part in this tournament in 10 weight categories,' he said.

When contacted, Boxing Australia chairman Ted Tanner concurred that prior commitments have kept them away from the tournament.

'Unfortunately, we had already lined up an international event in Australia and invited boxers from Italy and Ukraine. So we are not able to take part in the Commonwealth Championships,' Tanner told IANS from Melbourne.

'Also, let me clarify that security was not a concern for us and we regret not being a part of the Commonwealth Championships.'

Raja said the Talkatora Stadium would be ready in time for the Commonwealth Boxing Championships. He also said the team for the Commonwealth meet would be selected on the basis of performance in the Super Cup and two-week trials in Patiala.

Selectors rule out Younus for Hobart Test but may consider him for ODI series

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 03:55 PM

Lahore, Jan 7(ANI): Pakistan chief selector Iqbal Qasim has said that the selectors have decided against sending former skipper Younus Khan for the third Test against Australia, but will consider him for the ODI series thereafter.

Qasim said that the selectors want to give Younus more time to regain his form by playing in the domestic circuit, before sending him on national duty.

"We believe that Younus has a definite role in Pakistan team and we would like to see him join the team for the five one-day internationals," The Daily Times quoted Qasim, as saying.

"We want him to regain his batting confidence," he added.

Earlier, captain Mohammad Yousuf had made desperate calls to send the experienced batsman to Australia to bolster the batting line-up, which has failed in the series so far.

"Obviously Younus is a very experienced player and a very good player. He's got a 50 average in Test matches. We miss him a lot. He is a very crucial No.3. We already told them (PCB) to send him. I don't know when he is coming," Yousuf had said.

Pakistan has lost the three-Test match series 2-0, and will play the final test in Hobart, starting on January 14. (ANI)

Ferguson asked to pay 40-mn pound for Marseille wonder kid Hatem

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 03:39 PM

London, Jan 7 (ANI): Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been asked to pay 40 million pounds to take Marseille wonder winger Hatem Ben Arfa to Old Trafford.

Real Madrid are also keen but the high asking price means Arfa looks certain to stay in France.

Olympique Marseille president Jean-Claude Dassier said: "If a club like Manchester United or Real Madrid offered 45 million Euros then we'd have to think twice."

"I don't believe it will happen but the market lasts another month," The Sun quoted Dassier, as saying.

The France star, 22, has failed to hit top form since a nine million pound move from Lyon 18 months ago, but remains one of the game's top prospects. (ANI)

Sutil itching to beat idol Schumacher

Deepak Jain Thu, Jan 07 10 03:23 PM

New Delhi, Jan 7 (PTI) Adrian Sutil was among the legion of wide-eyed, awe-struck Germans who spent their teens admiring Michael Schumacher but the Force India driver cannot wait to unhorse the idol of his teens in this year''s Formula One championship. Sutil was just being ushered into the go-karting world by his elder brother when Schumacher joined Ferrari and went on to become, at least statistically, the best F1 driver ever before quitting in 2006. Sutil welcomed the seven-time world champion''s return to Formula One grid with Mercedes and felt it would be a great incentive for all other drivers to compete against, and possibly outrace, the German legend. "Michael''s return is a great news for motorsports, us and Michael himself," Sutil said during his interaction with PTI journalists here. "He is a genius, a hero of motorsports we all admire. So it''s nice to have him back. But at the same time, it''s every driver''s dream to beat him once and prove that they are better than him! He is a hero for me as well. "But at the end of the day, you have to fight for your position and doesn''t matter who''s hero and who''s driving. You want to be in the front, at any cost. How it happens, at whose cost, doesn''t matter," said the lanky German, who scored his maiden points for Force India in the Italian Grand Prix where he came fourth. More PTI AY AT

Peer pressure pays off in NZ despite protests

Deepak Jain Thu, Jan 07 10 02:49 PM

Israel's Shahar Peer was the subject of protests for the third successive day at the WTA Tour's Auckland Classic on Thursday, though the 22-year-old still advanced to the semi-finals of the event.

Five people, amongst a group of about 20 protesting at Israel's policies towards Palestinians and urging Peer to withdraw from the tournament, were arrested outside the central Auckland venue, local media reported.

One was arrested on Wednesday during a protest, which caused a delay to Peer's second round victory over Slovakia's Magdalena Rybarikova on one of the outside courts.

Peer, however, continued to be seemingly totally unfazed by the outside distractions and moved into the semi-finals with a 6-0 3-6 6-1 victory over Russia's Maria Kirilenko on centre court.

"You know I'm trying to focus on myself and not about them coming or not coming and just trying to focus on my tennis," Peer told reporters. "If I win the tournament, it just shows that I don't need to think about it and politics should not be at play."

Peer will meet third seed Yanina Wickmayer in the semi-finals on Friday after the Belgian overpowered the tournament's surprise package Kimiko Date Krumm 6-2 6-2.

The Japanese former world number four, who returned to the courts in May 2008 after more than a decade away from the game, had upset fifth seed Virgine Razzano of France in the second round on Wednesday.

The Razzano victory was the first time the 39-year-old had beaten a top-20 player since launching her comeback, though she also dispatched former world number five Anna Chakvetadze in the first round.

Wickmayer, who faced off-court controversy after she fell foul of the Belgian doping body's "whereabouts rule" and was initially banned for a year before a court overturned it, used a powerful serve and groundstrokes to blast to victory. Top seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta also advanced to the semi-finals after she produced a superbly accurate game, keeping Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova pinned deep behind the baseline to complete an easy 6-1 6-2 victory.

"I didn't make many mistakes at all and I was very aggressive," Pennetta said.

"She's always tough to play because she makes you play so many balls and it's not easy to make a winner.

"Today, everything was perfect."

Pennetta will need to put her friendship with compatriot Francesca Schiavone to one side in the semi-finals after the fourth seeded Schiavone thrashed the unseeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-2 6-3 in the late match.

The Italian duo will be busy on Friday as they team up for their doubles semi-final against top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber after their singles clash.

AB de Villiers doesn't want 'ball tampering' issue to die down

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 02:09 PM

To keep pressure on the England team even though match officials said that there was no evidence of ball tampering, South African cricketers are continuing to make an issue of the television footage.

Middle-order batsman AB de Villiers said "it is not on to climb on to the ball with your spikes." This is what Stuart Broad was filmed doing on Tuesday morning.

"It was a little bit naughty. Although I wouldn't say that he deserves to be banned, I do think it should be looked at - definitely," The Telegraph quoted, De Villiers, as saying.

De Villiers's frustration can be well reflected after South Africa decided not to file a written complaint.

According to Dr Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa's team manager, they took advice from match officials before deciding to let the matter drop.

"There was a concern raised about the condition of the ball. If you looked at TV footage you could clearly see that there was an indentation on the ball, and there were marks that went across," Moosajee said.

"It was taken up to the match referee, Roshan Mahanama, who then looked into the matter and said he was quite happy that no further action needed to be taken. And we accepted that," he said.

According to a statement released on Wednesday by the International Cricket Council, South Africa's failure to put in an official charge by the start of play means that the issue is now closed.

But De Villiers seems to clearly disagree with South Africa's team policy. "I think there should be a formal complaint with a ball that was reversing after that incident. There was clearly a piece of the leather off the ball after he stepped on it and it is not the first time that it happened."

The second Liberation for Bangladesh

Mirpur, Jan. 6 -- Former Bangladesh skipper Akram Khan is a selector and a businessman now. Khan, whose most memorable moment came in 1997 when he led Bangladesh to win the ICC Trophy, is joint owner of a travel agency with a fleet of 14 luxury buses that ply to and from different parts of the country. "It's a business owned with Ashish Bhadra," he said. Bhadra is a former captain of the Bangladesh football team. It's difficult to miss how his eyes light up when asked about the reception he got. "It was a surprise. We were taken in a bus from the airport to the Parliament Street where the reception was given. There were more than a lakh fans waiting for us. The money, the felicitations followed but nothing could beat the feeling. People told us they had not seen such a gathering since Bangladesh was liberated in 1971."

Mishra shines on last day

Deepak Jain>Thu, Jan 07 10 01:43 PM

Mumbai, Jan. 6 -- Mumbai have made it to the final of the Ranji Trophy. They will meet Karnataka in Mysore from Monday in the clash for the title. The semi-final between Mumbai and Delhi ended in a draw here at the Cricket Club of India on Wednesday but the hosts qualified on the basis of first innings lead. This is the 43rd time that Mumbai have qualified for the final of the premier domestic tournament, which they have won 38 times. And this is their second successive appearance in the final, under captain Wasim Jaffer. On the fourth and final day of the semi-final, Mumbai added 187 runs to their first innings lead of 289 to set Delhi an improbable target of 477. The visitors were 160 for four before the captains agreed to call the match off with the mandatory overs remaining to be bowled. That brought an end to a day of uninspiring cricket. It was almost certain by the end of the third day that Mumbai are through to the final. And if anybody thought there was going to be an exciting fourth day, he might have as well expected to see pigs flying over Brabourne Stadium. On Tuesday, captain Wasim Jaffer had said the decision to not enforce the follow-on was taken to rest his bowlers. And that had snuffed out the chances of a result in this contest. But with the Mumbai batsmen getting out before lunch on the fourth day, their bowlers had to toil for nearly three hours. However, with spinners Ramesh Powar and Iqbal Abdulla bowling long spells, the fast bowlers got some rest. Resuming on the overnight score of 123 for four, Mumbai lost Omkar Khanvilkar on the fifth ball of the day, caught at first slip off left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra. Iqbal Abdulla was the next to fall, to a ball that turned viciously to hit the leg stump. Abhsihek Nayar, who scored a century in the first innings, was bowled by a Mishra ball that turned and kept low. While Delhi don't have much to boast of in this match, the performance of the 17-year-old Mishra might be the biggest gain for them. The tall spinner with a lazy high-arm action took six wickets in the second innings to add to this first innings tally of four.

But in Mysore, as Jaffer said afterwards, a match will be on.

On Wednesday, there was another scarcely believable sight: Mortaza, one of Bangladesh's biggest stars, took a cycle-rickshaw from his rented place to the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium to join the rest of his teammates at practice. The medium-pacer was getting late and his driver was yet to turn up. So he called a rickshaw and headed for the stadium. He had just spoken to HT about his chances in the forthcoming IPL and his injury. But then, as he saw a camera coming out of the bag, he turned his face away and never looked back. "It's disappointing to miss a series at home, especially after being named captain. I hope to be fit before the forthcoming New Zealand series," he said. Selector Akram Khan too sounded optimistic. "Our only problem in Tests is that we do not have another bowler of the level of Mortaza. We need to keep him in the squad for New Zealand. All our other medium-pacers are not half as penetrative as Mortaza is," Mortaza, who was with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the last edition of the IPL, is recovering from knee surgery. A bout of asthma has hindered rehabilitation but he remains hopeful. "I am optimistic about my chances in the IPL this time. Sourav Ganguly knows my strengths. Coach Dav Whatmore was our coach for four years and I have a good rapport with him. With the IPL scheduled to be played in India the wickets will suit my batting. Last time I got just one chance and I am disappointed with my performance. But this time I hope to be more useful if I get a chance."
