England stumbled to 179 for five at lunch on the final day of the third test against South Africa on Thursday as wickets for Dale Steyn and Paul Harris moved the hosts closer to squaring the series.
Thoughts of a record run-chase of 466 were long gone as England sought instead to survive 90 overs after starting the day on 132 for three at Newlands.
Jimmy Anderson, sent in on Wednesday as a nightwatchman, battled on for 46 minutes on Thursday, taking his score to nine off 52 balls before he was caught brilliantly by Ashwell Prince at leg slip after edging a full toss from Harris on to his boot.
Steyn, the spearhead of the South African attack, bowled two short spells of three overs and, in his fifth over of the day, ripped a delivery back into Jonathan Trott bowling him for 42.
Paul Collingwood (8 not out) and Ian Bell (12 not out) were the batsmen digging in at lunch, having survived for over half an hour together.
South Africa need to win the match if they are to go into the final test, in Johannesburg from Jan. 14, with a chance of taking the series. England's innings victory in the second test in Durban last week put them 1-0 up.
