Mumbai, Jan 7 (PTI) Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and Indian Oil booked their berths in the semi finals of the 9th All India Guru Tegh Bahadur Gold Cup hockey tournament at the Mahindra Stadium with contrasting victories here today. ONGC edged out youthful and gritty Namdhari XI by a narrow 2-1 margin after leading by a solitary goal at half time in the four-team Pool A while IOC thrashed local outfit Western Rly 5-1 after taking a 3-0 lead at the breather. The two oil outfits thus notched up their second successive wins in the pool and would take on each other in the concluding contest to decide the group toppers. ONGC''s clash with Namdhari saw their defence on top with Olympian Harpal Singh, their skipper, and goalkeeper Dinesh Ekka keeping their rivals at bay at the Mahindra Stadium. ONGC took the lead at the stroke of half time when Karamjeet Singh clinically finished a combined move from the left by Sandeep Antil and Jagwant Singh. Crossing over, the oilmen increased the lead to 2-0 when Jayanta was successful with his drag-flick attempt off a penalty corner earned in the 51st minute. The Namdhari youths were reluctant to give up and two back-to-back penalty corner awards resulted in Gurpreet Singh converting one in the 54th minute. But Namdharis'' attempts to get the equaliser did not bear fruit with Harpal and ''keeper frustrating their moves. (MORE) PTI SSR AT SHN
