Indian hockey needs more than dil

Published>Sun, Mar 07 10 01:18 PM

India, March 6 -- Film star Priyanka Chopra's clarion call - "phir dil do hockey ko (give your heart to hockey again)" - is inspiring thousands in Delhi to pack the National Stadium and root for the Indian team in the on-going World Cup. Alas, the team, after a resounding start against Pakistan, disappointed a motley crowd of young vociferous people, many of whom seemed innocent to the nuances of the game, but wanted India to win. First I must confess that it was more than a pleasant surprise to find that the entry to the stadium for ticket-holders was not stifling at all, despite the understandably tight security arrangements. The irritating frisking, a necessary evil of our times, was done by the cops efficiently and without being rude. The stadium itself looks imposing and one can have an unhindered and close view of the ground from anywhere in the stands. The electronic scoreboard and the giant screen showing most of the action live inside the stadium is a great help to the spectators in enjoying the game. The organisers deserve a pat for their efficient conduct of the championship so far. The atmosphere inside the stadium when India is playing is almost electric with thousands screaming in unison whenever India is on the prowl. The tournament came alive on the opening day itself when the team forged a bond with those thousands who were present at the ground. The crowd was unabashedly partisan but did not raise any offensive slogan against Pakistan. It was a crowd that knew where to draw the line and treat the match as a sporting contest and not a war. This almost seemed a throwback to a time when Indians were the undisputed champions of the world and the romance of hockey was still alive. The same crowd, now thirsting for more, realised the harsh truth in the next two matches that their team was not good enough to compete in the international arena. The awesome Australians and the clinical Spaniards exposed our team for what it is worth - an almost non-existent defence, poor fitness levels and lack of tactical acumen. Will the upwardly mobile crowd be willing to back the team even now? Or will this short-lived romance end here and now? A team cannot win matches just by media hype and crowd support. They also can't become world beaters on doles and charity. And there must be something inherently wrong with a team which used blackmail tactics to get their "dues" from the federation at a time when they should have been preparing for the tournament. And there must surely be something wrong with us as well who most of the time don't care for the sport but are all of a sudden rooting for it only because it might satisfy our "Nationalistic ego".

The deep-rooted shortcomings at the grass-root level, lack of funding and inept administration has ruined the sport and for it to come back on the rails will require more than just giving our "dil" to the game.

Rooney set to pick up 500,000 pound goal bonus

Published>Sun, Mar 07 10 01:04 PM

London, Mar 7(ANI): England striker Wayne Rooney will bag a staggering 500,000 pounds goal bonus if he is top scorer at the World Cup.

Rooney's incentive has been written into the lucrative deal he has with his long-standing boot supplier.

If the 24-year-old has a successful tournament, he is also expected to be crowned world player of the year in December, News of the World reports.

However, the striker must beat off competition from Fernando Torres, David Villa and Luis Fabiano to pick up the bounty.

England's last World Cup Golden Boot winner was Gary Lineker at Mexico in 1986, finishing the tournament as top scorer with six goals.

Rooney did not score for England in the last tournament, but this time he is expected to after a phenomenal season at Old Trafford.

He is the fourth favourite with bookmakers to bag the most goals in South Africa after an impressive year for club and country.

Rooney has been in explosive form this season for Manchester United, as his goals against West Ham this week, his 26th and 27th of the season, means he has only 15 fewer than Cristiano Ronaldo's tally in the 2007-08 campaign.

He is also on course to win the PFA Player of the Year award. (ANI)

SA redeem themselves with a win over Pak

Published>Sun, Mar 07 10 12:48 PM

New Delhi , March 6 -- Boys grow to become men. The South Africans did so splendidly. After a huge 0-12 rout against Australia, the Proteas came out all guns blazing on Saturday, outplaying Pakistan 4-3 in their Pool B encounter. With no chance of making it to the semis, the Proteas looked focused on the match in hand from the beginning. A penalty corner in the second minute though unsuccessful, sent early shivers in the Pakistan camp. Powered by Marvin Harper and Julian Hykes in the forward line, the South Africans continued their thrust into their opponents' half. A lacklustre Pakistan took lead in the sixth minute off a gentle reverse stick touch by an unmarked Rehan Butt. The field goal, however, was the sole highlight for the side. The 0-1 score on the giant scoreboard ignited the South Africans and they let loose a barrage of assaults. A 19th minute counter offensive saw Harper steer clear of Pakistani defence. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Harper mistimed what could have been a stunning equaliser in a deserving first half. The post 35-minute session, however, saw the South Africans all over it. Within minutes after the lemon break, Thornton McDade put his team on level terms, spanking the ball to the net off a penalty corner. In the next 16 minutes, South Africa not only took the lead but cemented it with three goals one of which resembled a creative golf spank from Harper's stick. A goal each by Imran Muhammed and Waseem Ahmed in the dying minutes could not stop Austin Smith's side from redeeming itself against a team that now has just one win from four matches.

Sekar confident of Mumbai Indians'' good display

Published Sun, Mar 07 10 12:24 PM

Mumbai, Mar 7 (PTI) Mumbai Indians'' team director T A Sekar is confident that the franchise, which did not do too well in the last two editions of the Indian Premier League, would turn in an impressive display this season riding on skipper Sachin Tendulkar''s good form. "This year we have a very good side and have worked hard in the run-up to the tournament. We have had two camps in Jamnagar and Baroda prior to our current one here," he told PTI. Skipper Sachin Tendulkar''s superb form with the bat in the lead-up to the Tewnty20 League, starting March 12, boded well for the team''s fortunes, according to Sekar. "Sachin is in tremendous form and is in great touch which is a very good sign for us. It''s a lesson to be learned by the youngsters in the team how he manages himself. They will be better cricketers if they can imbibe even one per cent of what he does. He''s a rare breed. Such cricketers come only once in a century," he said. Sekar felt the key to any IPL team''s success is how the seven Indians in the playing eleven do and in this he has a lot of players to choose from, including ICL returnees like R Satish and Abu Nacheem. "The 7-8 Indians will play a big role in the success of a team in IPL," he said. MI start their campaign with a home match against 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals at the Cricket Club of India''s Brabourne Stadium on March 13. (More) PTI SSR VKV PM

Tiger Woods back to golf course

Published>Sun, Mar 07 10 11:38 AM

London, Mar 7 (ANI): Tiger Woods is preparing for a comeback to golf after the sex-scandal hit him last year.

The golfer recently enjoyed a nine-hour practice session at the Isleworth club near his Florida home.

A fortnight from now Woods will participate in the Tavistock Cup, a competition between local state pros, say sources.

"Tiger seemed to be in the zone totally. It's amazing how just three months ago he was in hiding and unable to get his head round even stepping back on a golf course," the News of the World quoted a source as saying.

The insider added: "His therapists have advised him to get back into his normal routine. In the next few weeks he also has to re-apply himself to living a clean life away from the addiction course."

Meanwhile, Woods and his wife Elin spent time at their old family home in Isleworth this week.

Woods made a public apology over his extra-marital affairs last month. (ANI)

Milan shut out in Rome, Juve win at Fiorentina

AC Milan's David Beckham (L) challenges Daniele De Rossi (C) and Juan of AS Roma...

Published>Sun, Mar 07 10 11:24 AM

AC Milan missed the chance to close within a point of Serie A leaders Inter Milan on Saturday when they were held 0-0 at AS Roma.

Second-placed Milan were on top for most of the match and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar headed over a glorious chance to break the deadlock in the closing stages.

The result will have cheered Inter coach Jose Mourinho, whose side can stretch their lead over Milan to six points and pull nine ahead of Roma by beating Genoa at home on Sunday.

Inter have 58 points with Milan on 55 and Roma 52.

Juventus boosted their Champions League qualification hopes with a 2-1 victory at Fiorentina that lifted them to fourth.

Roma made an aggressive start at a packed Stadio Olimpico with Daniele De Rossi shooting just wide and Julio Baptista forcing a decent save from Christian Abbiati with a powerful strike early on.

But Milan gradually worked their way into the match and they were in control by the middle of the first half.

Marco Borriello blasted wide a good chance set up by Ronaldinho's threaded pass and Roma defender Nicolas Burdisso was lucky an attempt to head away a Mathieu Flamini cross did not fly into his own net.

The visitors continued to make the running after the break and Roma's Julio Sergio just managed to scramble the ball away in the 55th when Borriello burst into the area and aimed inside the near post.

Roma were more dangerous after striker Luca Toni came on just before the hour as he returned from a calf injury that had sidelined him since January.

Mirko Vucinic nodded a fine opportunity wide and Abbiati did well to repel a John Arne Riise piledriver in stoppage time.

Milan coach Leonardo had sprung a surprise by giving Huntelaar injured Alexandre Pato's place in his attacking trident rather than David Beckham, who set up a good chance for Ronaldinho after coming on in the 72nd minute.

The England midfielder will hope he was being rested for Wednesday's visit to his former club Manchester United in the Champions League last 16, when Milan need to reverse a 3-2 deficit.

In Florence Italy full back Fabio Grosso, who came on as a substitute at the start of the second half, fired home what proved to be the winner from a tight angle in the 68th minute.

Juve's Brazilian playmaker Diego had dribbled past keeper Sebastien Frey and slotted into an empty net to give the visitors the lead in the second minute after Antonio Candreva had sprung the offside trap with a smart pass.

Former Juve midfielder Marco Marchionni headed the home side level in the 32nd when Alex Manninger, standing in for injured Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, came out to intercept a cross but missed the ball.

Juve have 44 points from 27 games, one more than Palermo who can regain fourth place by beating lowly Livorno in Sicily on Sunday.

Faltering Fiorentina, who host Bayern Munich on Tuesday in the Champions League last 16, are 10th.

'Electric' Real Madrid hold the whip hand in La Liga

Published>Sun, Mar 07 10 11:22 AM

The build up to next month's 'clasico' started in earnest on Saturday when Real Madrid's thrilling comeback to beat Sevilla 3-2 at home put them top of La Liga on goal difference from Barcelona.

It is a two-horse race for the title, with third-placed Valencia 16 points behind with a game in hand, but Real now hold the edge.

Barca's trip to the Bernabeu on the April 10-11 weekend could be the key, with the head-to-head record between the teams deciding the title if they finish level on points, as happened in 2007.

Barca beat Real 1-0 in the Nou Camp earlier this season.

Sevilla, one of only three teams to have beaten Real this season in the league, went two up at the Bernabeu but were swept aside as Real scored through Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos and finally Rafael van der Vaart.

"The key for me was that this Madrid were able to play the kind of electric football they are capable of," Sevilla coach Manolo Jimenez told reporters.

"I have to say that this Madrid is electric, with power and speed, incredible. It was very difficult to keep Madrid away from our goal, given how fast they are."

Real midfielder Xabi Alonso said the win was a huge boost to morale ahead of Wednesday's visit of Olympique Lyon in the Champions League, when they have to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit.

CONFIDENCE BOOST

"We have played as a team and everything worked well," he said. "This gives us a lot of confidence in the league and for Wednesday's match."

"There's still a long way to go (in the league) and a lot of things can happen, but we are moving in the right direction."

In contrast, Barcelona's faltering form cost them dearly when they were held 2-2 in Almeria, having to twice come from behind to level through Lionel Messi.

The pressure on the leaders appeared to be reflected in Pep Guardiola's being sent to the stands in the first half and then striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic saw red in the 61st minute.

"Despite the sendings off, and the adverse result, we didn't lose faith," Guardiola told reporters. "We continued to press forward with 10 men and for this reason I am proud of the players."

When asked about his sending off, Guardiola was brief in his reply. "Ask the referee," he said. He was clearly annoyed when asked whether he was feeling the strain, saying: "No. I'm not tense."

Real win thriller to go top of La Liga

Real Madrid's Rafael van der Vaart celebrates his goal during their Spanish first division match...

Published>Sun, Mar 07 10 11:04 AM

Rafael van der Vaart scored an injury-time winner as Real Madrid came back to beat Sevilla 3-2 and replace Barcelona at the top of La Liga on Saturday after the champions were held 2-2 in Almeria.

Sevilla stunned the home fans by taking a two-goal at the Bernabeu with an own-goal from Xabi Alonso and an Ivica Dragutinovic freekick early in the second half.

Real stormed back, netting twice in four minutes through Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos and the winner came when Van der Vaart scrambled the ball home in added time.

Barca twice came from behind to draw with Almeria thanks to a double strike from Lionel Messi, the second coming after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had been sent off in the 61st minute.

Real climbed into first place, level on 62 points with their arch-rivals but with a superior goal difference.

COMEBACK VICTORY

Deportivo Coruna climbed to fifth on 41 points with a 3-1 comeback victory at home to lowly Tenerife thanks to goals from Juan Rodriguez, Andres Guardado and Diego Colotto.

The islanders have earned just two points on their travels all season and shipped 12 goals in their last three outings.

Sevilla spoiled a festive atmosphere at the Bernabeu, following the news of Barca's draw in Almeria, by grabbing an early goal when Diego Capel's cross was turned into his own net by Alonso in the 10th minute.

Real peppered the Sevilla goal but ran into an inspired Andres Palop and, against the run of play, found themselves 2-0 behind after a bizarre strike just after halftime.

Dragutinovic's speculative long-range freekick looked harmless but goalkeeper Iker Casillas was unsighted and the ball bounced inside the post.

Ronaldo started the fightback on the hour, clipping home a loose ball from close range and, after substitute Guti crashed an effort against the bar, Ramos headed in at a corner.

WILD CELEBRATIONS

Gonzalo Higuain hit the post and the bar, Raul got in the way of Ronaldo's goal-bound shot and Sevilla barely emerged from their own half.

It was the 92nd minute when Higuain headed goalwards, Palop was unable to hold the ball, and Van der Vaart slid in to score, sparking wild celebrations around the stadium.

Barcelona, who left France striker Thierry Henry on the bench again, were undone after 12 minutes in Almeria when Domingo Cisma rose to head home from a corner.

Almeria keeper Diego Alves was in fine form and as Barca's frustrations grew, coach Pep Guardiola was sent to the stands for disputing a decision.

Alves held firm until just before halftime when Barca won a fortunate free kick on the edge of the area and the keeper could only watch as Messi's superb effort curled into the top corner.

Almeria were back in front after the break when Carles Puyol turned Guilherme's low cross into his own net. Four minutes later Barcelona's Sweden striker Ibrahimovic was sent off when Cisma made the most of a tussle between the two.

Despite the setback Barca continued to press and, when Almeria failed to clear Pedro's cross in the 66th minute, Messi hit his 19th league goal of the season from close range. But it was far from a vintage performance by the Catalans.

Chile scales back league championship after earthquake

Published Sun, Mar 07 10 10:48 AM

Chilean clubs decided on Saturday to suspend this year's two championships and play a single tournament as a result of the devastation caused by a massive earthquake in Chile.

An earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale hit central and southern Chile a week ago, causing hundreds of deaths and widespread damage.

"This season we will hold only one national championship ...(which) will be suspended on May 9 to give way to the Chile team's preparation for the World Cup in South Africa," the Chilean football federation (ANFP) said on its website (www.anfp.cl).

"We also resolved to wait until next Friday to decide when to resume play."

ANFP president Harold Mayne-Nicholls said: "In no way do we want to modify the (Chile team's) programme because at this time the national team is not only important in footballing terms but essentially for the morale of the country."

Clubs in the southern half of the country, including first division Huachipato, Universidad de Concepcion and Nublense, have been badly affected. Some foreign players have left the country, Chilean players and their families have suffered losses and stadiums have been damaged.

Chile has since 2002 held two championships every year, the Apertura (opening) and Clausura (closing), with two separate champions. Each is equivalent to a single round in a traditional championship with teams facing each other once, at home in one and away in the other.

The Apertura which kicked off last month had reached the sixth round of matches before the earthquake.

We can''t match best sides in just seven months: Brasa

Published Sun, Mar 07 10 12:16 AM

New Delhi, Mar 6 (PTI) Set to play for the bottom half positions in the 12-team hockey World Cup here, India coach Jose Brasa today said the country would not have played at the same level of top teams in just seven months of preparation. Brasa, who took up the reigns in June last year, said he was happy with the performance of the side considering the lack of experience and absence of international matches in the build-up to the tournament. "I am happy with the performance of the team. We are improving since the time I took up the job. We would not have matched the best teams in the world in just seven months of preparation. We were close to the best teams in this World Cup and that is the positive we will take from this event," he said after India lost narrowly (2-3) to England in their penultimate Pool B match here. "We played well today... better than against Spain, at the same level against Pakistan and Australia. We deserved a draw today. Had Rajpal Singh scored in the last minute we could have got a point. We now have to play for the seventh- eighth position," added Brasa who had aimed for a semifinal berth for the team before the tournament. (More) PTI PDS SHN

Contador says he learnt from 2009 Paris-Nice failure

Published Sun, Mar 07 10 12:06 AM

Spain's Alberto Contador returns to the Paris-Nice race on Sunday, having learnt an important lesson from the 2009 edition.

The Tour de France champion looked set to win the 'Race to the Sun' last year before cracking suddenly on the penultimate stage to hand victory to countryman Luis Leon Sanchez.

"I think I learnt a great lesson that day, not only for the rest of my season but also for my career as a whole," the Astana team leader told a news conference on Saturday.

Contador tired dramatically with 4-km of the stage left, crossing the line on his own two minutes and 53 seconds adrift of Sanchez after he "forgot to eat and drink as I should have".

The mistake led then-team mate Lance Armstrong to dub him an "amazing talent but still a lot to learn".

The rivalry between Contador and Armstrong was one of the main talking points in last year's Tour de France and the Spaniard acknowledged he was more relaxed this season with the American having left to create his Radio Shack team.

"The big difference from last year is I will have a very competitive team this season. They were incredible on the Tour of Algarve and I'm now confident I can rely on them," Contador said.

The 2007 and 2009 Tour de France champion, who also won Paris-Nice in 2007, made a perfect start to this season by winning the Tour of Algarve last month.

"Paris-Nice is a race which means a lot to me especially as I'm in great shape," said Contador.

"It is one of those races where you feel the same tension as on the Tour," he added before singling out compatriots Sanchez and Alejandro Valverde as his main rivals.

Paris-Nice starts with an 8-km prologue in Montfort l'Amaury on Sunday and ends in Nice a week later.

England push India out of knockout contention

Published>Sun, Mar 07 10 12:04 AM

New Delhi, March 6 (IANS) India are out of the semifinal race after going down 2-3 to England in Pool B of the Hockey World Cup here Saturday.

India bounced back after conceding three goals, but an impressive England defence stood firm and the European Champions expectedly marched into the semifinals, winning all their four matches.

England scored through James Tindall in the 16th minute as he deflected in a cross from Nick Catlin. Ashley Jackson (42nd minute, 47th)) first converted a penalty corner soon on resumption and scored again to make it 3-0.

India rallied with goals from Gurwinder Singh Chandi (54th) and skipper Rajpal Singh (57th), but could not find the equaliser in the end, despite a couple of gilt-edged chances coming their way. It was the hosts' third straight loss, after the euphoric victory over Pakistan 4-1 in the first match. They went down to Australia, and Spain by an identical 2-5 in their next two games.

England's fairytale performance continued since their shock victory over Australia on the opening day.

England now top the pool with 12 points from four games while India are fourth on three points.

The English team continued to be India's nemesis as they had knocked them out of the Beijing Olympic qualifiers in 2008, the first time in 80 years that the eight-time Olympic gold medallists failed to make the quadrennial event.

Both teams muffed opportunities in the first half, but it was England who looked the better of the two to score.

England, who have an all-win record in the tournament so far, made some fine moves but fumbled in the goalmouth.

India, too, missed chances after getting to the top of the circle on several occasions. Shivendra Singh, back after serving a two-match suspension, was through on his own, but lost control of the ball as English goalkeeper James Fair charged out. India got two penalty corners but Sandeep Singh and Diwakar Ram failed with both.

England repeatedly penetrated the Indian defence and goalkeeper Adrian D'souza managed well to thwart some of the moves.

India made some swift counter-attacks but England defenders were equal to the task.

Iain Mackay was injured when Sandeep's stick inadvertantly found him, but he was back after medical attention.

England finally opened the scoring through Tindall who had another opportunity soon, but this time he failed to strike.

India would have lost by a bigger margin but for Adrian, who saved a well-directed flick by Ben Hawes in the second half and blocked England captain Barry Middleton's reverse hit from a fast counter-attack just before the final hooter.

Rule-makers reject video, goalline technology

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 11:22 PM

Soccer will continue to rely on human judgment when it comes to disputed goals after the game's rule-makers flatly rejected the use of video and chip technology now and in the foreseeable future.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) voted against two proposed systems on Saturday, and said it would not risk sacrificing the sport's human element.

"It's an end to the potential use of technology within football," FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke told reporters after the IFAB meeting.

"Technology should not enter the game and that was a clear statement made by the by the board.

FIFA has been under increasing pressure to use some form of technology to eliminate the sort of mistakes that are regularly highlighted by television replays from numerous angles.

The most high-profile recent case was a clear handball by France striker Thierry Henry during the build-up to the goal which earned his team a place at the World Cup at the expense of Ireland.

A matter of minutes after the IFAB decision was announced on Saturday, English club Birmingham City had a goal disallowed in their FA Cup game against Portsmouth when replays showed the ball had crossed the line.

ALTERNATIVE PROPOSAL

Valcke said the IFAB had decided to postpone a decision on a greater role for the fourth official and on whether to introduce two extra linesmen -- one behind each goal -- to help increasingly beleaguered referees.

Both proposals will now be discussed at an extraordinary IFAB meeting in May, he said.

Founded in 1886 and seen as the guardian of the rules of the game, the IFAB is composed of the representatives from the FAs of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, each having one vote.

FIFA has four votes and a 75 percent majority is needed for any proposal to be passed.

Jonathan Ford, chief executive of the Welsh FA, said that debates such as England's third goal in their 4-2 win over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final were part of the game.

"The human element of the game is a critical component of it," he said. "It's the thing ultimately we end up debating. That's the beauty of the game and it's what keeps people talking in the pubs afterwards."

The IFAB made the decision after watching presentations of two systems -- Cairos, which uses a chip inserted in ball, and Hawkeye, currently used in tennis and cricket.

"It was put on ice two years ago and now a decision was made to stop it," said Valcke.

"If you start with the goal line, then any part of the pitch will be a potential space where you will use a video. We're also trying to avoid having many ways of stopping the game."

Each match at this year's World Cup will be covered by 32 different cameras placed at different points around the pitch, Valcke said.

England push India out of knockout contention

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 11:18 PM

South Africa knock Pakistan out of semifinal contention

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 11:12 PM

New Delhi, March 6 (IANS) Four times champions Pakist'n's semi-final dreams were shattered by minnows South Africa, who staged a sensational second-half rally to shock the Asian giants 4-3 in Pool B and pick up their first points from the Hockey World Cup here Saturday.

Down 0-1 at the breather, the South Africans played a fast game to break their seven-game losing streak in the World Cup competitions since 2002 as a sizeable crowd watched the exciting game at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium.

In a must-win situation to keep alive their slim chances of making it to the last four, Pakistan played dismal hockey barring the first few minutes of the match, to lose to a side which had conceded 22 goals in the first three game, including a 0-12 thrashing against Australia Thursday.

The South Africans had recorded their previous World Cup win against Belgium (5-4) in a classification tie eight years ago and thereafter they were winless in their next ten games.

Pakist'n's experienced drag flicker and wor'd's highest scorer Sohail Abbas was pathetic in taking penalty corners and is likely to be in the line of fire after his si'e's failure to reach the knockout stage in the tournament. The seasoned campaigner managed to put in only one of the penalty corners he took but it was disallowed following a referral as the umpires decreed that the ball had not been properly stopped.

However, Pakistan started off well, building pressure on the South African goal as Rehan Butt drew first blood as early as the fifth minute, beating goalkeeper Erasmus Pieterse.

But the script was turned upside down in the second session as Gareth Carr (penalty corner,38th min), Ian Haley (41st), Taine Paton (46th) and Marvin Harper (54th) found the target for South Africa during a 16-minute bltizkrieg.

Pakistan tried to bounce back but they only managed to narrow the deficit as Muhammad Imran (68th) and Waseem Ahmed (70th) converted two more penalty corners in the dying moments.

South Afri'a's last three goals came from good work upfront after Carr scored the first with a drag flick.

South Africans struck to make it 2-1 as Pakistan goalkeeper Salman Akbar saved a Thornton Macdade attempt but Haley pounced on the rebound and volleyed home.

A little later Patton spectacularly dived full length close to the goal to connect a cross that had come from outside the circle, leaving the Paskistanis completely dumbstruck.

But Pakist'n's miseries were not yet over as Harper slammed in to widen the gulf 4-1.

The writing on the wall was clear, but a desperate Pakistan tried to make a comeback by carrying out a series of attacks but in the end it was too little too late.

Pakistan now have three points from four outings.

'This is one of our worst performances ever. We were beaten in all the departments. The defence was very weak in the second half. After the first match against India, we were not able to improve. We have to review what has gone wrong here after we go hom',' said a crestfallen Pakistan coach Shahid Ali Khan.

Ghosal goes down fighting in Chennai Open squash

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 11:04 PM

Chennai, March 6 (IANS) World No. 29 Saurav Ghosal, the lone Indian in the Chennai Open squash tournament, went down fighting to Jonathan Kemp of England 15-13, 13-15, 9-11, 6-11 in 58 minutes here Saturday.

It was a rarity to watch such a worthy and enjoyable match between two technically sound players, but Kemp (ranked 21) had the extra bit as he set up a title clash against top seed Ong Beng Hee (ranked 19) of Malaysia in the final Sunday.

Ong survived an almost two-hour marathon against stroke maker Mohd. Ali Anwar Reda of Egypt to win 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10 in 116 minutes.

The women's final will be between World No.1 Nicol David of Malaysia and second seeded Jenny Duncalf of England. As was seen in the earlier matches, David was business like in her 11-2, 11-4, 11-4 win over seventh seeded Aussie, Kasey Brown, while Duncalf had an easy time beating sixth seed Camillee Serme of France 11-6, 11-9, 11-8 (30 mins).

In a defensive oriented men's first semifinal, Ong, a physically fitter player and known for playing 'long' stood to his ground in returning the ball, but the Egyptian had greater felicity in retrieving difficult returns to score points. Often Reda, who rose to a 6-2 lead in the first game, was not slackened in his approach in the next games too.

In the heart-warming second semi-final, Kemp and Ghosal playing against each other for the first time in PSA circuit, shared the opening two games. Initially, Kemp had a sizeable lead but allowed Ghosal to level the score 10-10 and then had his way to win over the extra points.

In the second game, Kemp was superior both technically and otherwise. Ghosal was also equally responding with elegant drops and power packed straight drives and led of 7-0. But it was short lived as Kemp tightened his grips on the game and forced the Indian to commit errors.

Thus, the 29-year-old Kemp went on to level the score 10-10 and then made his younger opponent to often run from front to back for returns and Ghosal was also tiring out.

In the next two games, Kemp was at his best and in fact led 8-0 in the fourth and then remained relaxed before winning the game and the match in 58 minutes.

Results (semifinals):

PSA: 1-Ong Beng Hee (Malaysia) bt 3-Mohd.Ali Anwar Reda (Egypt) 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 12-10 (116 mins); 2-Jonathan Kemp (England) bt 4-Saurav Ghosal (India) 13-15, 15-13, 11-9, 11-6 (58 mins).

WISPA: 6-Jenny Duncalf (England) bt 6-Camille Serme (France) 11-6, 11-9, 11-8 (30 mins); 1-Nicol David (Malaysia) bt 7-Kasey Brown (Australia) 11-2, 11-4, 11-4 (23 mins).

FIH should review video referral system, says Charlesworth

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 09:32 PM

New Delhi, March 6 (IANS) Australian coach Ric Charlesworth was critical of poor umpiring in the World Cup and asked the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to review the video referral system after the tournament.

'Three penalty corners were ruled against us and all of them were bad decisions. I am extremely angry. They (video umpires) are constantly making wrong decisions,' said Charlesworth after his team's 2-0 win over Olympic silver medalists Spain at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here Saturday.

'I have told my players to play better, so that bad umpiring does not affect them. I am a strong supporter of the system, but the FIH should review it at the end of the tournament.'

The Australian coach said it becomes very difficult for the field umpire to observe each and every detail while ruling a penalty corner.

'So many things are happening in that small area. I know it is tough for the on-field umpire, but the video umpire should take a better call. We got 2-3 bad decisions today. They (Spaniards) were repeatedly pulling the shirts and sticks of our players and these things were not noticed,' he said.

Australian captain Jamie Dwyer was also unhappy with the umpiring. He, however, was relieved that his team is well on course for the semis.

'We have a huge goal difference and we are almost there. Today we played attacking hockey and against tough opponents. We are slowly reaching the stage where we want to be,' he said.

Archery arena made operational for Invitational Commonwealth Games

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 09:02 PM

New Delhi, Mar 6 (ANI): Archery arena at Delhi's Yamuna Sports Complex got operational on Saturday for the five-day Invitational Commonwealth Games Archery Test event beginning on March 8.

Archery Association of India (AAI) President and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra said that this has been made possible despite delays in the construction of the stadium.

"There have been a lot of delays in the preparation of the stadium and that is why the players and the association cannot take full advantage of the home ground. Last October (in 2009) we had to organize a test event here but because of delays the venue had to be shifted to Kolkata," said V K Malhotra.

"Since past-one-and-a half months, we have pressurized the authority and the result is that the ground is now ready. The inside of the stadium is yet to be fully constructed and become functional. But they will have to complete it by the Commonwealth games in October," he added.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) formally inaugurated the archery arena on Friday, but Malhotra said that a large part of the construction work is yet to be completed.

Over 100 archers, from 10 countries, are expected to participate in the Archery test event, which is being organised by the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) in collaboration with the AAI.

The sports complex was initially scheduled to be ready by December 2009. At present, however, only the grandstand, with the capacity of 1,500 spectators, is complete while some work remains on training and competition areas.

Infrastructure facilities like change rooms and medical center among others are also incomplete.

Malhotra further said that once the complex is complete it should be handed over to the Archery association, so that they can manage it and the players get a platform to practice for free.

"The stadiums should be handed over to federations so that the players can practice there, undertake coaching and training and they can avail all the facilities which they are entitled to," added Malhotra.

The Archery Test event that will end on March 12 will be a dress rehearsal for the New Delhi Commonwealth Games scheduled from October 3 to 14 2010. (ANI)

Gangjee tied 10th after third round in Malaysian Open

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 08:32 PM

Kuala Lumpur, March 6 (IANS) Rahil Gangjee struck a purple patch with six birdies and an eagle in a span of 10 holes to finally come back with a six-under 66 despite a late double bogey in the third round of the Maybank Malaysian Open golf Saturday. He was tied tenth and four off the lead.

The event, co-sanctioned by the Asian and European Tours, has Thailand's Kiradech Aphibarnrat in the pole position. He was sharing the lead with Welshman Rhys Davies.

'I started out pretty alright. I made two birdies then I hit a wall when I made a double bogey on the 17th hole. Then I went to the first hole and shot six-under. I didn't expect six-under but I kept thinking to myself to just start all over again,' said Gangjee.

Talking of his eagle on par-5 fifth hole, Gangjee said, 'My eagle was a good one. I hit my drive just left of the fairway and from there I had a flyer (212 yards) with my six-iron and it landed to about nine feet.'

Gaganjeet Bhullar (70) and S.S.P. Chowrasia (72) are both at three-under in tied 25th, up 12 places from their 37th place at the end of the second round. Arjun Atwal with two double bogeys slipped to a 75 and tied 44th, down from tied 16th after two rounds. C. Muniyappa (72) in tied 56th and Digvijay Singh (75) in tied 68th were the other Indians to make the cut.

Shiv Kapur (73-73), Himmat Rai (73-73), Anirban Lahiri (75-73) and Jyoti Randhawa, who withdrew after the first round, missed the cut.

Kiradech, 20, brilliantly birdied three of his last four holes for a four-under-par 68 and a three-day total of 11-under-par 205. Davies tied the Thai rising star with a battling 71, which included three birdies against a double bogey.

The final round of the US$2 million event is poised for a photo finish as two-time champion Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand (69), Soren Hansen of Denmark (69) and Koreans K.J. Choi (69) and Noh Seung-yul (67) are a shot back on 206.

The hefty Kiradech, a former junior world champion, nearly sank the first hole-in-one of the tournament when his six-iron tee shot on the 15th ended an inch behind the hole. Although disappointed to not win a car on offer, it sparked a stunning finish as he went on to birdie 17 and 18.

Choi, aiming for a unique Malaysian double after his victory in the Iskandar Johor Open last October, was delighted to be in contention after firing five birdies against two bogeys.

Somdev has nothing to lose, can go all out: Misra

Published Sat, Mar 06 10 08:04 PM

Moscow, Mar 6 (PTI) Back in the tie after "superlative" win of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, India''s Davis Cup captain S P Misra today asked Somdev Devvarman to go all out in tomorrow''s tough reverse singles. Somdev is up against world number 13 Mikhail Youzhny in the first match tomorrow and his win is imperative for India to dream of a win. "Somdev''s match is very critical for us. Youzhny is a higher ranked player but reputations won''t count if Somdev plays well. He has nothing to lose and can go all out," Misra told PTI. The non-playing captain said he would be tempted to play Paes in the second reverse singles in place of Rohan Bopanna If Somdev go on to make it 2-2. "If Somdev wins then we have the option of Paes playing in the second singles, which will become decisive. I have that option in mind although Paes hasn''t played singles for a long time. But he has the game to win singles even today," he said. Misra was extremely happy with the way Paes and Bhupathi beat Igor Kunitsyn and Teimurza Gabashvili today. "They played superlative tennis. They have not played that good in recent times. They combined well. The other guys were not bad but Leander and Mahesh did not give them any chance," Misra said. More PTI AT

Seve set for special St Andrews event - Federation chief

Spanish golf player Severiano Ballesteros attends a news conference to present his new cancer research...

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 07:42 PM

Seve Ballesteros is on course to make an emotional return to St Andrews in July for a special four-hole event on the eve of the British Open, according to the president of the Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG).

"He wants to be on the first tee at St Andrews for the four-hole tournament and he will probably be there," Gonzaga Escauriaza told Reuters in an interview.

"Seve is doing much better. He was doing very well last summer when he started playing again but then he went through radiotherapy and chemotherapy -- that weakened him a bit but now he's started to get better and better."

Five-times major winner Ballesteros was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumour in 2008 which required four operations.

The 52-year-old Spaniard is among 32 former champions who have been invited to play four holes at St Andrews on July 14, the day before the 150th anniversary British Open.

Previous winners like Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Peter Thomson, Gary Player and Nick Faldo are also scheduled to play the first, second, 17th and 18th holes on the Old Course.

"He (Ballesteros) will be very happy to be there and I've met his son and he said he wants to caddie for him," said Escauriaza. "All his family are very motivated for him to come back to the game.

"It will be very emotional for a lot of people and for him too because of course he won at St Andrews in 1984. He has started to practice again and is able to play some holes especially as his home is right near to a course."

Escauriaza also said Ballesteros was fully behind the RFEG's bid to host the 2018 Ryder Cup.

Sweden, Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and France are the other countries in the running, with the winning bid to be decided in April 2011.

"He (Ballesteros) wants the Ryder Cup to be held in Spain," said Escauriaza. "He is with us and that is very good news.

"Without Severiano we would probably still be playing Great Britain and Ireland v United States. It's because of him that GB and Ireland became a European team (in 1979).

"One of the strengths of our bid is we have Seve on board -- that's huge," added Escauriaza.

Lajong stun East Bengal 1-0

Published Sat, Mar 06 10 07:32 PM

Shillong, Mar 6 (PTI) Title favourites East Bengal''s nightmare in the return leg of the I-League continued as they lost to Shillong Lajong FC 0-1 in a 15th round encounter here today. The home side extracted a sweet revenge of their Federation cup reverse as Nigerian Daniel Bidemi romped home in the 89th minute converting a cross pass from James Gibilee with one minute to go before the final whistle. Though the first and major part of the second half remained goalless, Lajong dominated the proceedings from the word go with their new forward combination of three Africans making repeated forays. Man-of-the-match Bidemi missed a number of chances. In the 24th minute, he took a shot off a pass from Anil Gurung which went out. In the 41st minute, the Nigerian dribbled past three East Bengal defenders and took a powerful shot which went straight into the hands of the Bengal goalkeeper Abhra Mondal. Lajong''s custodian R Lalthuammawia was rarely tested as the visitors put up a lackluster show in the forward line in absence of their talismatic striker Baichung Bhutia. Unmarked Gurung also missed a blinder from near the goalmouth in the 32nd minute. Three Lajong players were shown yellow cards, two of them Samson Ramengmawia and goalkeeper Lalthuammawia for ''excessive appeal''.

Vonn secures downhill World Cup title

Lindsey Vonn of the U.S. chats with Italy's Johanna Schnarf (L) after the women's Alpine...

Published>Sat, Mar 06 10 07:24 PM

American Lindsey Vonn added the downhill World Cup title to her Olympic gold when she won Saturday's speed event in Crans Montana.

Vonn, needing to finish ahead of Maria Riesch to secure the title for a third successive year, powered down the Nationale course to beat Italian Johanna Schnarf by a hundredth of a second and grab her sixth World Cup downhill win this season.

Swiss Marianne Abderhalden, who like Schnarf benefited from improved conditions, claimed a surprise third place, while Germany's Riesch dropped back to sixth.

Riesch, who won two golds at the Vancouver Olympics, will need some fantastic performances on home snow if she is to deny Vonn the overall title.

Vonn has a 197-point lead over Riesch at the top of the overall World Cup standings going into the finals in Garmisch-Partenkirchen next week.

"It is a relief for me to win this title here," said Vonn. "There is still a lot to come up... However, I'll be going to the finals with a light heart."

Vonn had already secured the super-G World Cup title going into the Olympics, where she won a bronze in super-G as well as the downhill gold.

On Friday, she was assured of finishing top of the super-combined World Cup standings after the race was cancelled. The International Ski Federation must decide whether she will officially be crowned super-combined champion, as only two races have been completed all season.

Vonn completed Saturday's downhill in foggy conditions, as did Riesch who was in second until several outsiders finished ahead of her when the light became better.

"That's Alpine skiing: sometimes you need some luck," Vonn told reporters after finishing in a time of one minute 35.26 seconds. "The conditions were not the same for everyone."
