Atwal misses cut in Nationwide Tour tourney

Sat, Aug 14 10 12:26 PM

Springfield (USA), Aug 14 (PTI) A disastrous back-nine cost Arjun Atwal dearly as he missed the cut at the Nationwide Tour''s Price Cutter Charity Golf Championship here after carding a two-over 74 in the second round. Atwal, playing in only his fourth Nationwide event of the year, signed off with a total of even-par 144. The Orlando-based golfer has lost his PGA card and needs to be inside the top-25 of the Nationwide Money List by the end of this season to reclaim his playing rights in the elite field. Atwal was off to a steady start as he parred the first four holes before stroking in birdies on the fifth and seventh in a blemish-free front-nine to make the turn two-under. However, Atwal''s fortunes took a tumble in the back-nine and he dropped four consecutive bogeys from the 12th to 15th hole. Another dropped shot on the 17th completely put paid to his chances before he managed a consolation birdie on the 18th hole. American Kyle Thompson grabbed the sole lead with a second-round 67 which took his overall score to 14-under 130. PTI PM

Tharanga stars in Sri Lanka's win over New Zealand

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 11:36 PM

Dambulla, Aug 13 (IANS) Upul Tharanga scored a valuable 70 as Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand by three wickets in the second one-day international of the tri-nation series here Friday.

Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews shared six wickets as Sri Lanka restricted New Zealand to 192 rus in 48.1 overs. The home team raced on to make 195 for seven in 40.5 overs.

Opting to bat first, New Zealand failed to get past the 200-mark despite a fighting half-century from debutant opener Bradley-John Watling (55).

New Zealand found it hard to get a big partnership as fast bowlers Malinga picked up three for 35 and Mathews bagged three for 36.

Watling (55) and veteran all-rounder Scott Styris (24) added 52 runs for the fourth wicket, highest in their innings, after New Zealand were reduced to 47 for three. Nathan McCullum also scored a valuable 36.

Malinga reached a personal milestone of 100th ODI wicket, when he struck with the second delivery of the match to remove Martin Guptill caught by Chamara Kapugedara.

Watling and skipper Ross Taylor (16) then added 45 runs for the third wicket but Mathews picked up two wickets in three balls as New Zealand were reduce to 47 for three.

Mathews trapped Taylor leg-before and had Kane Williamson caught by Thilan Samaraweera in the slips for a second successive duck.

The 25-year-old Watling, struck eight fours in his 68-ball knock and completed his half-century by hitting left-arm spinner Rangana Herath for a four. He fell top-edging a pull off Mathews to wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara.

In reply, Sri Lanka lost Tillekaratne Dilshan (5) early in the third over, but the 85-run stand between Tharanga and skipper Kumar Sangakkara (48) took the hosts to safe shores. Matthews also contributed 36 runs.

CWG merchandising partner Premier Brands pulls out

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 11:22 PM

New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (CGOC) received a serious set back Friday with merchandising company Premier Brands pulling out of the Oct 3-14 Games citing heavy losses.

Premier Brands, which was the official merchandising and licensing partner of the Games, said they suffered heavy losses due to the delay in the project.

Chairman of Premier Brands Suresh Kumar said that the company has decided to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games as the project has got delayed too much.

'The contract to produce the merchandise was signed on May 19 with a minimum profit guarantee of 15-20 percent, which could have been around Rs.7 crores. But it got delayed by around three months, and if I consider the 15-20 percent profit margin, it will come down to around Rs.3 crores whereas I am investing Rs.13 crores. I can't afford to incur such huge loss,' he said.

The merchandise were supposed to be launched June 24 when the Queen's Baton Relay entered India through the Wagah Border.

The project included a website for merchandising products, outlets across the Games venue and stores in shopping malls, metro stations and the airport in the capital.

Vishnu Prasanna beats Halkias

Fri, Aug 13 10 10:52 PM

From Our Chess Correspondent Chalkida (Greece) Aug 13 (PTI) Birthday boy Vishnu Prasanna made a giant stride toward his International Master title, defeating Grandmaster Stelios Halkias in the fourth round of first negroponte International Chess tournament here. Vishnu had made his final IM norm in the Kavala International open, less than a week before and there are only a few rating points now that separate him and the IM title. The youngster was in top form and won a clean game against Halkias to move to 3.5 points out of a possible four. At the top of the tables, Suat Atalik of Turkey, Zaven Andriasian of Armenia, Athanasios Mastrovasilis of Greece and Robert Hess of United States emerged as joint leaders with a perfect score. Vishnu Prasanna and former world junior champion Abhijeet Gupta are in the group of 12-players with 3.5 points in their kitty while Grandmaster Surya Shekhar Ganguly, Sandipan Chanda and D Harika are amongst those who have 3 points each. Prasanna faced an irregular queen pawn game against Halkias. Playing black, Prasanna followed the basics and broke the center early and Halkias had no solutions to the enormous on-board problems that ensued. The finale was a picturesque sight as Vishnu put his queen en prise to force resignation. In another game, Ganguly was held to a draw by veteran Grandmaster Oleg Romanishin of Ukraine who is also going to be the trainer of the Indian women team for the forthcoming chess Olympiad in Russia. Ganguly employed the Queen pawn opening and faced the Nimzo Indian defense wherein he won an exchange but ROmanishin always had compensation. Ganguly''s draw proposal in a dangerous position was accepted by the Ukrainian who later sighted the lack of time on his clock as the reason behind his decision. Harika missed a golden opportunity to increase her final GM norm chance as she let top seed Denis Khismatullin off the hook. Playing white, Harika played a fine game and was close to winning when a momentary lapse in concentration helped Khismatullin to liquidate to an equal endgame. Abhijeet Gupta scored a fine attacking victory with black pieces against Paul Hoffman of Germany while GM norm holder Vaibhav Suri went down to lower ranked Alexandros Gogolis of Greece.

Sri Lanka scores nervous win; India back to second spot

Fri, Aug 13 10 10:38 PM

Dambulla (Sri Lanka), Aug 13 (PTI) Sri Lanka huffed and puffed to a three-wicket win over New Zealand in the second ODI of the cricket tri-series and helped India reclaim the second spot in the ICC ODI team rankings, here today. India had surrendered the second position to Kiwis after the humiliating 200-run loss in the series-opener. Opener Upul Tharanga (70 off 109) was top scorer in Sri Lanka''s haphazard chase as Sri Lanka scored 195 for seven in 40.5 overs in a target of 193. New Zealand, electing to bat, were all out for 192 in 48.1 overs after Sri Lanka''s pace duo of Lasith Malinga (3/35) and Angelo Mathews (3/36) shared six wickets between them. The Kiwi total was built around some good effort by debutant BJ Watling (55) and Nathan McCullum (36). The low-scoring match at Rangiri Dambulla stadium was a dull affair as only 32 boundaries, including just two sixes, were scored in the flood-lit encounter. New Zealand, who had 117 rating points before this match, lost three points to slip to fourth spot behind South Africa (115). India gained a position to second with 116 points behind leaders Australia (132). Like the Kiwis, Sri Lankan made a wretched start, losing opener Tilakkaratne Dilshan (5) in the third over. Tharanga raised a 85-run stand for the second wicket with skipper Kumar Sangakkara (48) to steady the innings and then along with Thilan Samaraweera (36 off 38) steered the hosts close to win. But once Tharanga departed in the 37th over, wickets started tumbling and the hosts were reduced from a comfortable 162 for four to 180 for seven in a gap of 14 balls. However, seasoned Samaraweera kept his cool and brought his side home with 9.1 overs to spare. Tharanga''s patient knock had nine boundaries and Samaraweera helped himself with four boundaries with last one coming for winning runs off Kyle Mills. Mills was the highest wicket taker for the Kiwis with outstanding figures of 4 for 41. Earlier, after a high in the opening match, in which they beat India by a massive 200 runs, the Kiwis hit a low with half of their side returning back to the pavilion inside 23.1 overs. More PTI AT

BAI penal recommends action against Vijai Sinha

Fri, Aug 13 10 09:52 PM

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) The panel, investigating BAI Secretary General Vijai Sinha''s alleged financial irregularities has recommended disciplinary actions against him, sources said today. Badminton Association of India (BAI) had its executive body meeting in Hyderabad today where the findings of the five-member panel came up for discussion and was supported by 33 state units. U.S Soccer plan further talks with Bradley

U.S. national soccer team head coach Bob Bradley attends a training session with the team...

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 09:38 PM

The U.S Soccer Federation intend to continue discussions with coach Bob Bradley amid reports linking him with the vacant position at English Premier League club Aston Villa.

Bradley's current contract with the U.S national team runs out at the end of December and the coach had said before Tuesday's 2-0 friendly defeat to Brazil that talks with the federation had been put on hold until after that game.

A spokesman for the federation denied reports from U.K media that Bradley had quit in order to take up the position at Villa, left vacant by Martin O'Neill's decision to leave the Birmingham club.

"The reports that Bob Bradley has resigned are not true. U.S Soccer officials plan to continue discussions with Bob in the near future," Neil Buethe, the federation's senior manager of communications, told Reuters on Friday.

Prior to the Brazil game, Bradley said he would love the challenge of coaching in Europe but also said leading the U.S towards the 2014 World Cup would be a challenge.

British bookmakers made Bradley favourite for the job as soon as O'Neill resigned from the manager's position at Villa Park. Villa are owned by American Randy Lerner.

Bradley confirmed this week that he had contact with another English Premier League team, Fulham, through an intermediary, when their manager's position had been vacant last month.

Play resumes at PGA Championship after fog delay

Noh Seung-yul (L) of South Korea stretches on the practice range during another fog delay...

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 09:18 PM

Play finally resumed at the 92nd U.S. PGA Championship after Friday's start was delayed by thick fog.

The players got back out on the course at around 0940 local time (1440 GMT) when the fog lifted at the Whistling Straits course that hugs the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

More than three hours of golf was also lost because of fog on Thursday leaving 78 players -- half the field -- unable to complete their first rounds because of fading light in the evening.

Organisers had hoped some time would be made up with an early start on Friday but the foul weather conditions prevented that.

The forecast for the rest of the day was also gloomy with afternoon thunderstorms predicted, making it a strong possibility the second round would carry over to Saturday.

Among the players still to complete their opening rounds were U.S. Masters champion Phil Mickelson and South Africa's Ernie Els, one of five joint leaders.

Tiger Woods, whose world number one ranking is under threat following the worst PGA Tour performance of his career last week, was among the early starters on day one and showed signs of improvement with a one-under-par 71.

That left him three behind the clubhouse leaders, American Bubba Watson and Italian Francesco Molinari, and three others still on the course.

Parimarjan loses to Andreikin, Padmini in medal contention

Fri, Aug 13 10 08:38 PM

By Our Chess Correspondent Chotowa-Czarna (Poland), August 13 (PTI) Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi suffered a crushing defeat against top seed Dmitry Andreikin but Padmini Rout kept herself in the medal contention after the ninth round of the world junior chess championship here today. Negi, who has been trying to find his form, could not match up to the guile of Russian Andreikin in the important game for him and was outplayed from an equal position. The defeat proved quite expensive as Negi is now 1.5 point behind leader Andreikin and has just four rounds to catch up. Andreikin remained in sole lead on 7.5 points and is now followed by Emilio Arturo Cordova Daza of Peru and Sanan Sjugirov of Russia who are a half-point behind. A pack of six players are in close pursuit on 6.5 points and Negi is now joint tenth. Meanwhile in the girls'' championship being played simultaneously, Padmini Rout remained on course for a medal at the expense of Anya Corke of England. Padmini took her tally to seven points out of a possible nine with the victory. Anna Muzychuk of Slovenia continued to rule this section after defeating Sopiko Guramishvili of Georgia. The Slovenian took her tally to an enviable eight points out of a possible nine and also extended her lead by a full point over nearest rivals. Padmini, Olga Girya of Russia and Alisa Melekhina of United States share the second spot. In the open section, S P Sethuraman raised vision of an improved finish defeating Kacper Piorun of Poland. Anwesh Upadhyaya lost to M R Lalith Babu while Swapnil Dhopade ended on the winning side against Davit Lomsadze of Georgia. Debashish Das and Arun Karthik played out draws against their respective opponents. Amongst the girls, Bhakti Kulkarni felll behind in the medal race going down to Olga Girya while B Pratyusha split the point with Aigerim Rysbayeva of Kazakhstan. Negi went for the Queen''s gambit declined and Andreikin played it very safe in the opening with his half point lead. Looking to complicate things, Negi opted for an Isolated queen pawn middle game but Andreikin was quite up to the task in finding right manoeuvres that led to favourable exchanges. Negi lost the central pawn first and even the presence of opposite colour Bishops could not help him salvage the half point. Anya Corke proved no match for Padmini in a French defense game where the Indian played white. Going for a thematic king side attack, Padmini opened the king side in quick time and won a piece through a simple tactical stroke. The game lasted 42 moves. Howard ready to train Indian cagers and coaches

Fri, Aug 13 10 08:22 PM

Gurgaon, Aug 13 (PTI) On his maiden trip to India, American basketball star Dwight Howard today said he would be happy to share his knowledge of the game with country''s cagers, if asked, and also emphasised the need to train coaches for the development of the sport. The 24-year-old lanky hoopster, a four-time All-Star player of the famed National Basketball Association of the USA, also feels that the game has a bright future in India. "I am in the country for the first time and my experience is beautiful. Young Indians are very enthusiastic about this game. I think the country has a great potential in basketball. You have a large young population, that is the biggest and most inspirational thing," Howard told PTI. "I would be very happy if I can help the players but only working for them is not enough. The coaches should also be given proper training so that they can guide the young players properly," he said. The basketball star also advocated the need for giving the Indian national team enough international exposure, which he thinks is vital to improve performance. "Give them international exposure. That will make them sharper and they''ll come to know the different styles of the game," he said. As part of his tour of India, Howard is conducting clinics for the kids. Howard feels that entertainment and excitement are the two factors which have helped the NBA to become one of the most successful basketball tournaments in the world and the same formula could also be applied in the sub-continent. "People want to see competition and at the same time some entertainment. The same rule is applicable here also," he said. Meanwhile, the cager also interacted with the kids during the programme at a mall and signed autographs. The event, which was organised by NBA Jam and their official partner Planet Sports, was participated by a large number of school children as Howard promoted a new shop that showcases the basketball apparel and other sports gears and footwears. "This event proves our complete commitment to help lift the overall standard of sports in India and bring to the country cutting-edge sports solutions," said Planet Sports CEO Ravdeep Singh. "I am excited to meet the fans in India and share the energy I experience every time I step on the court," Howard said.

BJP leaders file complaint against corruption in CWG

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 08:08 PM

New Delhi, Aug 13 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Ramesh Bidhuri and R. P. Singh filed a police complaint on Friday alleging corruption in organising the Commonwealth Games.

The leaders said that the fraud is 'an economic genocide of country's wealth', while lodging an FIR at the Parliament Street Police Station here today.

"This is a complaint by two individuals against the Commonwealth Organizing Committee (CGOC) and its officials. The basic allegations against the officials and the Organizing Committee are that they have committed fraud and cheating," said Ajay Dikpal, a lawyer representing Singh and Bidhuri.

"They have embezzled the funds, which belong to the country and its citizens. This is the basic allegation and we have pointed out certain facts and circumstances which speak for themselves," he added.

The BJP leaders said they have lodged their complaints as taxpaying citizens of the country.

"We have come here as common citizens of the country and as taxpayers. It is our money, which is being embezzled and misused. Therefore we have asked that this should be thoroughly investigated," said R. P. Singh.

"This is not against just a few people, but all those tenders and unidentified persons, who might be involved in this fraud should be brought under the purview of this complaint," he added.

Earlier on Tuesday, the BJP leaders staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha miffed with Union Sports Minister M S Gill's weak defence over allegations of corruption against the CGOC members, asserting that Gill has insulted Parliament by suggesting MPs should use RTI to get information about CWG preparation costs.

Following a plea by the Union Sports Ministry, CGOC had earlier terminated the services of its Joint Director General T S Darbari and Deputy Director General Sanjay Mohindroo in connection with alleged financial irregularities during the Queen's Baton Relay Run ceremony in London.

The Central Vigilance Commission had alleged irregularities in several Commonwealth Games related-works being carried out by civic and construction agencies. (ANI)

AITA to follow government guidelines on age and tenure

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 07:48 PM

New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) The All India Tennis Association (AITA) Friday declared that it will adhere to the government guidelines regarding the tenure and age of the office bearers.

The AITA executive committee met Friday and unanimously agreed on the decision to follow government guidelines which puts a cap on the tenure and age of office bearers, and has been a thorn in the flesh of most National Sports Federations (NSF).

'Responding to public opinion, the committee unanimously endorsed the views of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) that good governance, transparency, accountability and democratic elections have to be encouraged in all NSF's,' AITA secretary general Anil Khanna said in a statement.

'In the executive committee, the president Yashwant Sinha said that the government guidelines with respect to tenure and age of office bearers should be adhered to by the AITA. These views were unanimously approved.

'The AITA committee also considered the guidelines in respect of limitations of tenure of the president to 12 years and that of the secretary/treasurer for a maximum of two consecutive terms of four years and, thereafter, a cooling period of four years. The Committee also discussed the age limitation of 70 years as projected in the constitution of the IOC and now included in the guidelines,' said Khanna.

The executive committee also backed the decision to chose Rebound Ace as surface for the courts.

'All actions taken by the AITA were 100 percent correct and above board and there was no conflict of interest whatsoever of any office bearers of AITA in this process,' the release said.

'The committee further noted that by following the process of competitive bidding the government saved upto 30 per cent (around Rs.40 lakh).'

The executive committee also took note of the MOU signed by Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) and AITA with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on use of facilities at the refurbished R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium.

The committee resolved that AITA and DLTA will use the facility in accordance with the government guidelines as well as Ministry of Urban Development to promote the game of tennis and be able to generate surplus for sustenance of the complex.

The committee also discussed the implementation of the coaches' education programme in collaboration with ITF.

'AITA wishes to have official recognition of the ITF, like Australia and Spain to the able to grade coaches international,' the release said.

Fool-proof power supply for Games venues: BSES

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 06:26 PM

New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) As Delhi gets ready to host the Commonwealth Games, power distribution company BSES is geared up to provide fool-proof power supply to the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games venues, a spokesperson said Friday.

'At a cost of Rs.74 crore in all the 12 Games venues, BSES has created and strengthened its electricity distribution system. A multi-pronged fool-proof arrangement has been created to check any unforeseen power supply-related contingency and to ensure 100 percent power supply,' the spokesperson said.

All the CWG venues in BSES area will have 'double source' power supply from different Grid stations. This is to ensure that if one source fails, there is no disruption of power supply to the venue.

'We ensure uninterrupted power supply and to tackle any power-related emergency during the Games, the Delhi government had constituted a high powered 'Emergency Response Team' (ERT) earlier in the year. BSES has been working in close coordination with the ERT and has implemented all their suggestions,' the spokesperson added.

According to BSES, the infra-red thermal scanning at sub-stations for detecting 'hot-spots' dual and dedicated feed to all Games venue will be set up. Disaster management groups will be formed and they will be deployed near each venue.

A predictive scanning using infra-red thermal scanners will constantly scan and monitor and infra-red cameras at their sub-stations will detect the hot spots.

PCB chief selector hits back at charges of bias against Karachi players

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 06:08 PM

Karachi, Aug 13(ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector Mohsin Hasan Khan has dismissed accusations of the board being biased against players from Karachi.

The Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) had earlier criticised the selection of the Pakistan team currently on tour in England, calling it an injustice to players from Karachi.

However, Khan said: "The England-bound squad was selected after thorough deliberation with coach and the captain, hence putting the blame solely on me is a bit unjust."

"On top of all the captain of the squad Shahid Afridi was from Karachi and had a big say in the team selection," The Daily Times quoted Khan, as saying.

He further said that apart from Afridi, Danish Kaneria and Tanvir Ahmed from Karachi, were part of the squad, but the selectors could not be blamed for their non-inclusion in the playing eleven.

"Afridi resigned after the very first Test match; Kaneria's performance was not up to the mark and was released by the tour management to regain his form while Tanvir was not provided with an opportunity as there was no room in presence of Mohammad Aamir, Mohammad Asif and Umar Gul," Mohsin said.

The KCCA had named Sarfraz Ahmed, Khurram Manzoor, Khalid Latif, Faisal Iqbal and Asad Shafiq - all Karachi cricketers - as among those who were ignored by the selection committee.

"A number of talented cricketers from Karachi have been neglected. The team's recent showings in England prove that merit was not followed in team selection," said Khalil Ahmed Nainitalwala, KCCA Senior Vice President. (ANI)

'Unhappy' Tevez looking forward to leaving Europe

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 05:18 PM

London, Aug 13 (ANI): Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has said that he is looking forward to leaving Europe as his love for football has dipped after Argentina's World Cup disappointment.

Tevez admitted he considered quitting football after Argentina's dismal performance at the World Cup in South Africa.

On the eve of the Manchester City's Premier League kick-off against Tottenham, Tevez said he was only staying in the game to support his family and looked forward to retiring in two or three years.

The 26-year-old is finding it difficult to cope with separation from his daughters as he still has four years left on his Manchester City deal.

"For the last year I haven't lived with my daughters, they are growing up and I'm getting worn down. After returning from South Africa, I thought about quitting football, but I have a large family and now I have to continue," The Daily Mail quoted him, as saying.

"Football doesn't make me happy or as fulfilled as before. It becomes difficult to play like this," Tevez said.

Tevez is struggling to get over the disappointment of Argentina crashing out of the World Cup to Germany in a humbling 4-0 quarterfinal defeat. (ANI)

Doping, a common practice among Pak athletes: Ex-sprinter

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 05:08 PM

Karachi, Aug 13(ANI): A former Pakistani athlete has alleged that some officials in the country had encouraged sportspersons to take performance-enhancing drugs to win medals.

Muhammad Talib, who represented Pakistan in 110 meters hurdles in 1960s, made these allegations after eight athletes tested positive in dope tests carried out during a national championship held in Islamabad.

Talib said that it was a common practise among Pakistani athletes.

"Though from time to time people associated with sports had brought this fact to the attention of those who mattered, but the issue was deliberately ignored," The Nation quoted Talib, as saying.

"As the medal winning frenzy increased over the years, the coaches knowing that winning medals would be financially rewarding, encouraged athletes to take banned substances," he added.

He further said that he was shocked that the Pakistan Olympic Association, the Pakistan Sports Board and the Sports Ministry had totally ignored such a serious issue despite being aware of the issue directly or indirectly.

According to reports, three male and five female athletes have tested positive for banned substances.

A couple of months ago, two leading female athletes had tested positive, and were banned for two years. (ANI)

Beaten black & blue, MSD's men regroup

Fri, Aug 13 10 04:52 PM

Dambulla, Aug. 12 -- Apart from the first 10 overs of the opening encounter in the tri-series against New Zealand, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men never looked to be dominating proceedings. And well before Ashish Nehra drove Kyle Mills straight to Jacob Oram at mid-off, with more than 20 overs to spare, to concede India's fourth-highest defeat in terms of runs, the writing was always on the wall. No doubt Kiwi skipper Ross Taylor and Scott Styris rescued their team with a matchwinning partnership of 190 runs for the fourth wicket. But looking at India's mediocre performance with the ball and in the field, it did seem like India had underestimated an inexperienced New Zealand bunch, with the team missing Daniel Vettori, Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder. Kiwi all-rounder Nathan McCullum admitted that their dressing room was surprised with India's performance. "I was a bit surprised with the score that they came up with the end. But it was a game where we played exceptional cricket," said Nathan. "We batted very well, we were in a pretty tough position and we had a fantastic partnership between Ross and Scott and we finished it off." "With the bowlers, it was a team effort and everyone came in and did things well and bowled very well and we caught well," said the New Zealand offspinner after an optional practice session on Wednesday. "It was a great day, really."

The loss also meant India had conceded their No. 2 world ranking to New Zealand in ODIs. However, with the ranking charts likely to change drastically after each of the six remaining encounters in the tournament, nothing much should be read into it till the final on August 28. The Indian bunch would have loved to make the most of their five-day break before the next match with an overnight outing to one of nearby picnic spots. But after a defeat as humiliating as the one on Tuesday, don't be surprised if all 15 members are in attendance for Thursday's "optional" practice session.

'Injury prone' Akhtar working hard to revive international career

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 04:08 PM

Lahore, Aug 13(ANI): Pakistan's discarded fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar is yet to give up hopes of reviving his international career, as he was recently seen practicing with the Pakistan A players in Lahore's National Cricket Academy.

Confirming it, Pakistan fast bowling giant Mohammad Irfan said that it was great to have Akhtar drop in at the camp and train alongside them.

"Akhtar played in both games bowling alongside Talha and myself in the first and Junaid and Tabish in another one. He looked fast and was bowling off his full run-up," Cricistan.com quoted Irfan, as saying.

Irfan also said that the 34-year-old looked focused and determined for a comeback in the Pakistan team.

"It's not long before Pakistan play South Africa in Dubai and with question marks over the length of Gul's injury and Asif unable to travel to the UAE. I'm sure that Akhtar is hopeful that they may recall him to fill in for that series," he added.

Akhtar was overlooked for the Test series against Australia and England, but was part of the team that played two Twenty20 games against Australia.

Earlier, last month, Pakistan's fitness trainer David Dwyer had said that Shoaib was an integral part of the national team's ODI and Twenty20 plans.

"Shoaib has lost a lot of weight and that's encouraging. He's definitely not in peak fitness and can't be compared to the fast-bowlers like Mitchell Johnson and James Anderson as these guys are fit and able to cope with the demands of Test cricket. However, it will take time as it gets more difficult to maintain those fitness levels as life progresses," Dwyer had said.

Dwyer also stressed that Shoaib needed to persist with his training programme to seek improvements.

"The onus has got to come from Shoaib himself. With every performance, the mind may tick over and ask him if he wants to keep doing it. And for that, he needs to come up with the discipline that yes, he wants to strive for higher levels and keep playing international cricket," he added.

Shoaib was earlier recalled for the Asia Cup, which was played in Sri Lanka from June 15-24.

However, his injuries had forced the PCB to overlook him for a number of important assignments, including the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup in England, the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa and the twin tours of New Zealand and Australia. (ANI)

Liverpool could go Chinese with £237m bid

Fri, Aug 13 10 03:52 PM

New Delhi, Aug. 8 -- For most people, the only thing common to communist China and the English Premier League club Liverpool is the colour red. Now it seems that there may be a stronger connection in the pipeline. The rumours are that the state-affiliated Chinese Investment Corporation is backing a 46-year-old head of Hong Kong company QSL Sports Ltd, Kenny Huang, who has offered to pay the £237 million (Rs 1,737 crore) that Liverpool owe their bank. This would, say experts, give him not sole ownership but "a ridiculously large amount of leverage" to wrest control of the club from current owners American sports entrepreneurs George Gillett and Tom Hicks. But two days after the story appeared in British papers, the sovereign wealth fund body to the communist state has denied the rumour going as far as to say that it has "never heard of Mr Huang". Huang, however, reconfirmed he is interested in assuming control one of English football's most historic clubs. According to observers, if Huang manages to stave off a rival bid by Syrian businessman Yahya Birdi, Liverpool could 'go Chinese'. The Chinese Investment Corporation manages a £188 billion (Rs 1,378,000 crore) portfolio and its covert backing of Huang has raised concerns over the role of the Chinese government in the attempted takeover bid. But Liverpool, which has the second biggest 'Chinatown' in the world after San Francisco, may not be hostile at all to the Chinese bid.

''Satisfied'' with the CWG security for now: Crosswhite

Fri, Aug 13 10 03:38 PM

Melbourne, Aug 13 (PTI) Satisfied with security for the Delhi Commonwealth Games as of now but jittery nonetheless, the Australian Commonwealth Games Association today said it continues to keep a "watching brief" on how things unfold in the run-up to the October 3-14 event. "We sent out the latest security circulars (to athletes) last Friday and our main emphasis is to secure the airport, the venues, the village, the transport route and the hotels our people are staying at. At this stage we are satisfied, but it''s a watching brief," said ACGA chief executive Perry Crosswhite. "India will be providing both armed guards and undercover guards on buses. We are allowed to have our own security as long as we accredit them," Crosswhite told the ''Herald Sun''. Crosswhite said the it was a good sign that no Australian athlete has withdrawn from the event due to security concerns so far. "The two issues we need to keep our eyes on are security and safety. No one has pulled out (because of concerns) and that''s a credit to the coaches and federations and ourselves," he said. The Australian, however, was concerned with the media reports of shoddy work at the Games venues but hoped that the problems would be taken care of before the show-piece event commences. "One report said roads had been built with substandard materials. That can be fixed before the Games. There was a report a diver had fallen over a drain at the pool, but they just hadn''t put the lid on the drain yet," he said. "On the weekend there were photos of venues (looking dilapidated) but I have seen the photos inside those venues, and they look really good. The inside is what is important. We want to be assured the venues are of a safe standard. "But we do have to accept we are probably not going to have things which we would consider to be totally finished in this country," he added. On Australian athletes'' medal prospects, Crosswhite admitted that it would be quite difficult for them to improve upon the tally they had achieved in Melbourne Games four years ago - 221, including 84 golds. "We had a target that we wanted to do as well as in Melbourne, and everyone has said that will be hard to achieve, and I agree," he said. "I will be surprised if we achieve that. It wouldn''t surprise me if we won 20 per cent less medals than Melbourne, but it also wouldn''t surprise me if we went close. This time England may really challenge us," he added.

Pakistan, England plan exhibition cricket match to raise funds for flood victims

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 03:26 PM

Lahore, Aug 12(ANI): The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) are planning to hold an exhibition match to raise funds for the flood-affected in Pakistan.

The Pakistan team is currently on a tour of England.

The PCB said the proposed match would be between a Pakistan XI and an International XI featuring stars from various countries.

"PCB is working on a proposal along with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to organise an exhibition cricket match for the benefit of the millions of Pakistanis affected by the devastating floods in Pakistan," The Daily Times quoted a PCB statement, as saying.

"Proceeds from the match would go towards the rehabilitation of families displaced by the worst floods in the country's history," it added.

Over 1,600 people have been killed and 15 million affected as raging floodwaters continue to wreak havoc in Pakistan.

The United Nations (UN) had earlier said that Pakistan would need billions of dollars to recover from the unprecedented devastation caused by the deluge.

Relief and rescue work has been hit badly by continuous rains, particularly in the north western region. (ANI)

Karachi cricket board joins chorus baying for PCB chief Ijaz Butt's blood

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 03:22 PM

Karachi, Aug 13(ANI): A day after the Chairman of Pakistan National Assembly's Standing Committee on Sports appealed to President and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) patron Asif Ali Zardari to remove PCB Chairman Ijaz Butt, the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) has now joined the chorus.

KCCA Senior Vice President Khalil Ahmed Nainitalwala said that Butt should be removed for bringing the game into disrepute in the last couple of months.

"We humbly appeal to President of Pakistan to sack PCB chief Ijaz Butt to save the game of cricket from further disaster," The Daily Times quoted Nainitalwala, as saying.

Nainitalwala accused Butt of nepotism, abuse of power and poor administration that has made Pakistan cricket a laughing stock worldwide.

"Enough is enough and its time for Ijaz to be shown the door as he has made mockery of Pakistan cricket," he added.

He also criticised the selection of Pakistan team currently on tour in England, calling it an injustice to players from Karachi.

"A number of talented cricketers from Karachi have been neglected. The team's recent showings in England prove that merit was not followed in team selection," Nainitalwala said.

Earlier, in a two-page letter written to the President, Chairman of Pakistan National Assembly's Standing Committee on Sports, Iqbal Mohammad Ali, had said that Butt's administration has seen the team reduced to the status of 'minnows'.

"The chairman and his close aides have shoddily let down your confidence in them by making a mockery of management ethics at the board. It is therefore recommended that a very dynamic and energetic administrator be made the chairman of the board so that the affairs of cricket in Pakistan are run professionally," Ali said.

"The incompetence of Ijaz has already brought enough shame for our country at international level," he added.

The board has also seen through five different Test captains in just over a year - Shoaib Malik, Younus Khan, Mohammed Yousuf, Shahid Afridi and Salman Butt - and Ali said that Butt and the management were responsible for such a 'comedy of errors'. (ANI)

National Sports Law in offing for good administration

Fri, Aug 13 10 03:08 PM

New Delhi, Aug. 13 -- Perhaps, keeping in view the various controversies taking place in sports, the Central Government is planning to enact a National Sports Law for better governance and management of sports. In reply to a question in Parliament on whether eminent sports experts have urged the government to enact a separate sports law, Sports Minister MS Gill replied, "The government has carefully studied the sports regulation systems prevalent in different countries and is considering options including that of enacting a National Sports Law for better governance.

"The need for having a central legislation for regulating the activities of the National Olympic Committee and National Sports Federations has been engaging the attention of the government in the light of their non-compliance with government guidelines on good governance," said Gill.

Fri, Aug 13 10 02:46 PM

New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) He may not have clinched a medal at the World Championships this time but Olympic gold-winning Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra continued to rise in stature by getting elected to the International Shooting Sport Federation''s (ISSF) Athlete Committee. The rifle shooter, who became the first individual Olympic gold medallist for India by finishing on top in the 2008 Beijing Games, was voted into the four-member panel by his fellow marksmen competing in the 50th World Championships in Munich, Germany yesterday. Bindra, who became a world champion in the 2006 edition, did not have a very good time in the just-concluded edition, finishing 25th in the qualifying of the 10m air rifle event. Ironically, his name for the committee was proposed by the National Rifles Association of India (NRAI) with which he has often been at loggerheads over facilities and selection procedures. A total of 827 shooters voted to elect the new committee. Apart from Bindra, the others who have been elected are Slovak Rajmond Debevec, Frenchman Franck Dumoulin and Russia''s Vladimir Isakov. While Debevec, a seven-time Olympian, clinched the 50m rifle 3 position gold in the 2000 edition, Dumoulin finished on top in the 10m air pistol event of the Games in the same year. Isakov won a 10m air pistol bronze in the 2004 Athens Olympics and followed it up with another third-place finish in the 50m pistol event of the 2008 Beijing Games. The committee''s Chairman and three additional members will be designated by the ISSF from a list of candidates. The committee''s brief is to gather information and opinions from athletes on their needs and problems and to establish a direct link with the athletes within the ISSF. CWG scam: UK firm sends Rs 90-lakh bill

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 01:48 PM

The UK firm accused of receiving inflated payments from the organisers of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) has sent a bill to the Organising Committee of ?122,692 (Rs 89.52 lakh) as unpaid dues for services during the Queen's Baton Relay (QBR).

This email to top OC officials from Ashish Patel of AM Car & Van came as recently as August 2 right in the middle of the controversy that gripped the OC and prompted its chairman Suresh Kalmadi to deny any charges of wrongdoing.

Incidentally, on August 4, when Kalmadi said he was open to any probe, he made no mention of this note from AM Car & Van.

The email, senior officials admit, suggests discrepancies in payments made to AM Car & Van and its sister concern AM Films. A total of ?3.84 lakh was paid to these firm since October 2009.

Three OC officials have been either dismissed or suspended following allegations of "financial irregularities" in the AM deal as well as other controversies.

Scrutiny of all foreign exchange transactions made for the QBR have been handed over to the Enforcement Directorate.

Details of the OC's internal investigation have thrown up key details:

n Due to discrepancies in accounts and receipts, officials in New Delhi did not settle final accounts with AM Car and AM Films, Result: OC account books show ?3.84 lakh as "outstanding and unsettled."

n In August 2009, T S Darbari and Sanjay Mohindroo hired the services of AM Car & Van and notched up a bill for ?3,376 for their 6-day stay in London.

Subsequently, on October 23-24, the OC made several payments to these AM companies. The first was a payment of ?2.38 lakh made to AM Car & Van of which the company asked the OC to transfer a little over 1 lakh pounds to the account of AM films.

n The OC also marked a second payment of ?1.46 lakh to AM Films around the same time.

n The OC provided credit cards to some officials when they visited London in connection with the QBR ceremonies after seeking RBI permission. These included Deputy Director General Sanjay Mohindroo and OSD M Jaichandran, both of whom were given credit limits of ?65,000.

Mohindroo reportedly said that a bulk of this limit was paid by him to AM Car/Films for their services and the ED is now looking at this money trail too.

Varied opinion over track in Champions League

Fri, Aug 13 10 01:38 PM

Port Elizabeth, Aug. 13 -- Any talk here about wickets is as ambiguous and uncertain as is normally in India. At the moment, no one here seems to have a clear idea as to how the wickets will turn out to be in the Champions League, and what the par score could be. The range, as far as par score is concerned, is from 140 to 200, and, as for the likely nature of the wicket, it spans from plain 'no idea' to 'on the slower side with spongy bounce' to 'wickets being helpful to the seamers.' Johan Botha, who will play for the Warriors, reveals the reason for this ambiguity. "I have no idea how the wickets are going to behave. We have never played so early in the year," he said. The Champions League will kick off the South African season, immediately after the country has seen the back of winters. So, one would tend to believe that wickets will be fast paced and have a good carry as they would be fresh. Players, however, tend to differ. "I don't think wickets will be very different from what they were during the IPL. It will be early season, there will be moisture and the temperatures will be in 20s. So, wickets won't be really dry and hence they are going to be on the slower side," said Albie Morkel. Makhya Ntini, however, feels the wickets are really going to be bowler friendly. "We will have good bounce and pace as the wickets would be fresh unlike they were during the IPL here. So, batsman will need to adapt," he said. Chris Scott, the curator at the Wanderers, has different ideas. "We will make the wicket as flat as possible, and the score we are looking at scores of 180 to 200. Given the diverse views, it's quite clear that teams wouldn't know what to expect. And that could be a bit disconcerting for the teams, especially the IPL teams as they are already under some pressure to prove themselves in the CLT20. Moreover, the non-IPL teams believe they have a huge advantage over the more fancied IPL teams in that they aren't as close-knit units as them.

End it like Beckham? Coach retires football star on TV

Fri, Aug 13 10 01:16 PM

Wembley, Aug. 12 -- David Beckham discovered his illustrious career had been curtailed on Wednesday night after England coach Fabio Capello revealed, in a 17-word TV statement, that the former captain would play no more competitive football for the team. The dysfunctional nature of Capello's regime was exposed once again after the Italian revealed in the television interview that he considered Beckham too old at 35 to continue a career that has encompassed 115 caps, 17 goals and three World Cups. "Thank you for helping me during the World Cup, but probably (he is) a little bit old," Capello said. The Italian also admitted on Wednesday that he had, as yet, been unable to communicate as much to the LA Galaxy midfielder, recovering from an achilles injury. While there is little shock in Capello's desire to select young players such as Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson, the clumsy breakdown in communication with Beckham is troubling. The veteran sat on the bench among the coaching staff at the World Cup, yet his representative was moved to issue a statement on Wednesday night denying that Beckham would ever voluntarily go into international retirement. Asked whether he had telephoned Beckham to tell him he would no longer be selected for competitive games, Capello said: "No. No. But I think I will speak with him. We tried to speak with him. I think David knows he has no future with the national team because we have to change." "Probably someone has rung him now before I called him. We tried to speak with him, but we haven't managed to," Capello added. "Someone asked me about Beckham (on Monday) and I said we have to look for new players, young players. You can see this evening the new players who can play on the right and left wings. I think, I hope, that when David is OK he can play here in a friendly at Wembley to say 'goodbye' and 'thank you very much'. "I won't pick him for any more competitive games. We need players for the future with Fabio Capello and the managers after me. I have to look for new players. He was a fantastic player but age is important for all people, not only David." That friendly is likely to be in November, probably against, although Beckham was unaware of Capello's decision ahead of last night's game. "There has been no discussion of retirement," the player's spokesman said. "He will always be available for his country, when fit, and if needed he will be there." The current captain Steven Gerrard, whose late brace deflated, praised his former team-mate's contribution over an career that began back in 1996. "He's got legendary status, without a doubt," said Gerrard. "He was a fantastic captain and, if he has played his last game, he'll certainly be missed both on and off the pitch. "But you never know with David. I'm sure that, if he hears that news, it'll drive him on and he'll try to prove people wrong." The lack of communication follows on from the embarrassing retirements of Paul Robinson and Wes Brown over the weekend following their selection for last night's friendly against Hungary.

England stars believe 'weirdo'Fabio losing the plot, think he might quit

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 01:08 PM

London, Aug.13 (ANI): England's football stars think coach Fabio Capello is turning into a "weirdo", a man who has lost the plot, and one who is failing to inspire the squad to move on and forget past disappointments.

The Sun quote an insider, as saying: "The players expected a big team meeting when Capello would tell them to put the World Cup nightmare out of their minds and look to rebuilding England."

"But instead they got silence. He never spoke to them, there was no rallying call, nothing.

"Quite frankly, they think he's becoming a bit of a weirdo, who is just going through the motions like his heart's not in it any more," the insider added.

On Wednesday night, as England won 2-1 at Wembley, Capello - usually such a vociferous figure on the touchline - stayed passively on the bench, hardly ventured into his technical area at all and adopted a surprisingly reserved approach.

When Steven Gerrard scored two magnificent goals to seal victory, Capello sat motionless with not even a flicker of emotion crossing his face.t suggested to some players that Capello, who earns six million pounds a year, has lost interest in the job.

In fact, they believe if he does not get at least four points from the qualifiers against Bulgaria at home and Switzerland away next month he could quit.

The faith of the players, the fans and the media is waning fast, especially off the back of a series of gaffes - starting with the Capello Index debacle before the World Cup, through to the ham-fisted announcement of the end of David Beckham's international career.

Questions are being asked among the squad about whether he is suited to the international game and how he does not understand the mentality of English footballers.

Yet Capello is adamant his players still believe in him.

The Italian said: "For me the important thing is the players. I work with the players. If they believe in me, we can win. When we win the fans will be with us. I am sure the players are with me." (ANI)

CA approves split-innings ODIs for National Cup

Fri, Aug 13 10 12:52 PM

Melbourne, Aug 13 (PTI) The players might have opposed it but Cricket Australia today approved a controversial 45-over, split innings one-day format for trial in the National ODI Cup this season. "The modified format was developed following a strong message from fans that one-day cricket is their favourite format but it needs refreshing to retain that status," said CA Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland. "We have listened to the public, undertaken comprehensive consultation across Australian cricket and developed a format which we now want to test thoroughly this summer," he added. The new format includes 45 overs per team with split innings of 20 and 25 overs, a maximum of 12 overs by any one bowler and 10 wickets per team and 12 players per team (teams can bat any 11 of the 12 and field any 11 of the 12) among other changes. The format would allow a maximum of two bouncers per over and a new ball from each end at the start of the innings. There won''t be any replacement new balls or power plays. As for the fielding restrictions, only two fielders would be allowed outside the circle between the first and fifth over and the 21st to 25th overs, while four would be allowed between the sixth and 20th over and 26th and 45th over. The new format will be played in all 31 matches of the inter-state national one-day cup. "Match points will include one point for a first innings lead which is retained even if the side leading then eventually loses, and four points for a win, with five points if a team leads at the first innings and subsequently wins," the CA statement read. The final format was approved by the Board on the recommendation of CA''s Playing Conditions Committee which met on Wednesday night. Voting members of the CA Playing Conditions Committee are Jack Clarke (Chairman), Mark Taylor, Matthew Hayden, Greg Chappell, Shane Warne, who was absent, and Paul Marsh. MORE PTI PM

World Cup win a chance to fix Spanish woes

Spain's soccer fans celebrate in Madrid after their team won the 2010 World Cup final...

Published>Fri, Aug 13 10 12:38 PM

As Spain gears up for the new soccer season, last month's headlines trumpeting the nation's first World Cup triumph have been replaced by allegations of match-fixing and tales of financial mismanagement.

Alicante-based club Hercules stand accused of paying a rival team's goalkeeper to throw a match last season and help them secure promotion to the top flight.

Hercules deny any wrongdoing but government lawyers and the Spanish soccer federation (RFEF) are seeking official access to taped phone conversations and other evidence from a separate investigation that have been widely published in local media.

La Liga side Real Mallorca, who are in administration, have meanwhile been excluded from European competition by governing body UEFA due to their financial problems, highlighting the parlous state of many debt-ridden Spanish clubs.

It is a worrying state of affairs for a professional league that proclaims itself the world's best and which boasts a large proportion of the game's top players and hugely rich and successful clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona.

However, the national team's victory in South Africa offers a unique chance to tackle the problems afflicting soccer and the authorities should use the momentum generated by the World Cup victory to put their house in order, analysts have said.

An important step would be to dispel the perception that the RFEF and the government lack the political will to hand out effective punishments for match-fixing, they added.

Abraham Paz, a Hercules club captain, was quoted as saying last week that the Spanish second division had long been prone to the practice.

SERIOUS MATTER

"There have always been rewards for winning but having them for losing is a very serious matter," Placido Rodriguez, a professor of economics at Oviedo University and a former chairman of La Liga club Sporting Gijon, told Reuters.

"If the evidence (against Hercules) proves correct we must show no mercy to the cheats."

The authorities, including the government sports council (CSD) and the professional soccer league (LFP), have also failed to rein in clubs like Mallorca who have been living far beyond their means and are deep in the red, analysts said.

Jose Maria Gay, a professor of accounting at the University of Barcelona and an expert on soccer finances, estimates that the combined debts of the clubs in the top three tiers of the league are not far short of 6 billion euros ($7.7 billion).

"In that sense, domestic Spanish football has never been in a worse state," Gay told Reuters.

The 20 clubs in the top flight had total debts of 3.526 billion at the end of the 2008-09 season, with Real Madrid leading the way with 683 million, according to a study Gay published in May based on clubs' accounts.

Mallorca had income of 28.1 million euros during the same period and costs of 43.9 million, with a debt of 85 million, the study showed.

PREVENT PROFLIGACY

Angel Barajas, associate professor of financial management at the University of Vigo, said it was up to the authorities to establish mechanisms to force clubs to rein in spending, with effective penalties for transgressors.

Rodriguez at Oviedo University said a planned sports law, which will seek to create an independent body to control clubs' finances with powers to punish clubs by excluding them from competition, could help prevent profligacy.

Gay added that what was also needed was the introduction of a system of collective bargaining for television rights like that used in rival European leagues, allowing TV cash to be shared more equitably.

Part of the reason medium-sized clubs like Mallorca struggle is the duopoly Real and Barca enjoy over TV income, splitting about half of the 600 million-euro annual pot between them.

Their dominance means they can afford sky-high transfer fees and wage costs while their potential rivals slip ever further into debt and find it impossible to compete.

Barca amassed a record 99 points in winning a second straight title last term, three ahead of Real who had a chance of pipping their arch rivals until the final day of the season.

Valencia were a distant third on 71 points and have since cashed in on their two best players, selling striker David Villa to Barca and his Spain team mate David Silva, an attacking midfielder, to Manchester City.

"For the Spanish league to have a future it's unavoidable and completely necessary that the money generated (from TV) is shared around," Gay said.

"That's what the league must do in order to grow and above all, to use the boost from the World Cup," he added. "Spanish soccer is in a sweet moment but it needs financial muscle."

Barajas agreed on the need for collective bargaining but was not optimistic Real and Barca would ever fall into line.

"It would be very difficult but it would be an important step to ease some clubs' financial problems and establish a more balanced league championship," he said.

"This is absolutely essential for the survival of Spanish soccer over the longer term."
