Bengal Club to felicitate former footballers

Mumbai, Aug 13 (PTI) Bengal Club, established in 1922 and occupying the northern end of the city''s cricket nursery of Shivaji Park in Dadar, is to felicitate four former football players of Mumbai on August 21. Two-time Olympian S S ''Babu'' Narayan, former national captain Gordrey Pereira, striker Bernard Pereira and Bimal Ghosh, the long-time former coach of Air India, were to be honoured by the club, it was announced at a press conference. The club, which started a sports academy last year to impart training to youngsters in football, cricket, tennis, badminton and table tennis, will honour the quartet on the final day of the six-day J C Maitra and J C Bhattacharjee Memorial Inter School Under-16 football tournament, said club president Utpal K Mukhopadhyay. The club''s future plans include a total refurbishment of its premises to conduct regular competitions in various sports, said its sports secretary P K Rakshit.
