Play finally resumed at the 92nd U.S. PGA Championship after Friday's start was delayed by thick fog.

The players got back out on the course at around 0940 local time (1440 GMT) when the fog lifted at the Whistling Straits course that hugs the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

More than three hours of golf was also lost because of fog on Thursday leaving 78 players -- half the field -- unable to complete their first rounds because of fading light in the evening.

Organisers had hoped some time would be made up with an early start on Friday but the foul weather conditions prevented that.

The forecast for the rest of the day was also gloomy with afternoon thunderstorms predicted, making it a strong possibility the second round would carry over to Saturday.

Among the players still to complete their opening rounds were U.S. Masters champion Phil Mickelson and South Africa's Ernie Els, one of five joint leaders.

Tiger Woods, whose world number one ranking is under threat following the worst PGA Tour performance of his career last week, was among the early starters on day one and showed signs of improvement with a one-under-par 71.

That left him three behind the clubhouse leaders, American Bubba Watson and Italian Francesco Molinari, and three others still on the course.
