New Delhi, March 26 (IANS) It is not yet clear whether India's forward Sunil Chettri will get to play in the Major League Soccer (MLS) as all clubs are allowed only eight international slots while the Delhi player is the 10th recruit of Kansas City Wizards this season.
'Right now we have 10 international players, but I don't foresee that being the case in a week or so. Nobody has to go right now because he (Chettri) is not on the roster until his paperwork gets approved,' Wizard's manager Peter Vermes was quoted as saying by Kansas City.com.
Vermes said Chettri will not be available to play in the Kansas City Wizards opener versus DC United at home Saturday.
According to MLS rules, a team's roster shall not exceed 24 total players. All 24 players are eligible for selection as part of the game-day squad during the regular season and play-offs.
Each team is allotted eight international slots, with the exception of Toronto FC, which is allotted 13 international slots, five of which may be used on domestic US players.
Chettri's agent Yogesh Joshee said he was unaware of the rule.
'I can't comment on this rule. The club officials must be aware of this rule and that is the reason why they have signed him,' Joshee told IANS.
The deal is tentative, pending Chhetri's visa application and his International Transfer Certificate (ITC) approval. The Wizards still need to make room for him on their roster.
Chettri becomes the eighth Asian and the first Indian to play in MLS. He will also be the first Asian to play for the Kansas City Wizards and the third Indian, after Mohammad Salim and Bhaichung Bhutia, to ply his trade outside of India.
Currently, MLS has representatives from over 55 different countries playing for the 16 clubs.
