New Delhi, Sep 14 (IANS) The Karni Singh Shooting Range, overlooking the Aravalli hills, has a breathtaking look with the landscaping and beautification in and around the stadium completed for the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games.
The Commonwealth Shooting Championship held here in February was the first test event. A lot of work has been done since the event took place and the range is now ready to host the shooting competition which is expected to fetch India's maximum medals.
Heavy green cover has added to the beauty of the stadium, which was built for the 1982 Asian Games.
The media was taken on a guided tour of the range Tuesday.
India's ace double trap shooter Ronjan Singh Sodhi, while demonstrating his skills to the media at the refurbished range, said that clear visibility at the open range for shot gun events will help the shooters to score high.
Sodhi, a world record holder, pointed out that the range had undergone several minor changes since the test event, and is the one of best in the world. The shooting range was in fact the first stadium to host a test event for the Commonwealth Games.
'I feel the range for the trap, double trap and skeet is one of the best in the world. There were some small bushes in the range and they were hindering a clear vision of the clay birds. But now they have been cut and we have a clear vision and it becomes easier for us. The precentage of missed chances will come down and it will be high scoring event,' he said.
Venue administrator Manmeet Singh Giondi said the Organising Committee has ensured that the whole compound is secured.
'Shooters won't be allowed to carry their guns to the Games Village. These will be escorted directly from the airport to the range. The armoury will be guarded round the clock and shooters will take the guns just before their event and will keep it back as soon as their rounds are completed. Their guns will be delivered to them again at the airport,' he said.
Anil Chowdhury, an IPS officer and security in-charge of the venue, said the Organising Committee is not taking any chances with the security.
'We have set up a three-tier security arrangement. At the gates automatic pillars, tyre busters and bollards have been constructed. There will be huge presence of Delhi Police officers outside the gate, besides watch towers and electric fences. We will also have policemen in plain clothes inside the stadium and in and around the range,' he said.
