DMRC to give free space for CWG campaign

Commonwealth Games 2010 mascot Shera will soon adorn metro stations of Delhi and the National Capital Region. The organising committee of Commonwealth Games 2010 (CWG) has tied up with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for using the latter's properties, barring trains, to advertise for the Games.

As per the agreement between the two, the space will be let out for free but the organising committee headed by Suresh Kalmadi will have to pay for electricity and other amenities provided by DMRC. "The organising committee recently approached us with the proposal of using our properties for advertising. We have agreed to the proposal," DMRC managing director E Sreedharan told FE on the sidelines of launching a revamped website of the corporation.

He, however, refused to give details of how much fee will be charged from organising committee for providing various amenities or how much revenue will be foregone on letting out the space for free. "It (revenue foregone) is a small sum in the national interest," Sreedharan said. More than 23% of DMRC's revenue comes from advertising, parking and real estate development.

On being asked whether DMRC is contemplating to sponsor the CWG, Sreedharan said "as of now there is no such proposal".

Meanwhile, taking its partnership with Indian Railways forward, the committee will soon survey railway stations under Northern Railways to ascertain the advertising opportunities.
