New Delhi, Apr 1 (PTI) The Delhi Assembly was today rocked by vociferous protests from ruling Congress MLAs over alleged obscene dance by cheerleaders and consumption of liquor in stadium during IPL cricket matches, with a few lawmakers even demanding a ban on the event in the city. Finance Minister AK Walia assured the House that he will seek a detailed report on the matter and appropriate action will be taken. The issue was raised by Congress MLA Matin Ahmed who alleged that scantly-clad cheerleaders were engaged in obscene dance before the people during the Indian Premier League matches at Ferozeshah Kotla Stadium. "Some telecom firms have even started betting through SMS services, promising winners that they will be able to meet the cheerleaders," he alleged. "People are openly having liquor in the stadium with betting and gambling taking place without any check," he alleged. Kunwar Karan Singh of Congress claimed that ticket price for certain categories has been lowered to evade tax. "This cannot be allowed," he said. Demanding a ban on the matches at the venue, Congress legislator Ramakant Goswami said "in the name of sports, people are consuming liquor openly in the stadium. Police too is supporting such gambling and betting". Talvinder Singh Marwa and Singh also sought strict action against violators and alleged that "some organisers were even seen going to the ground with glass of liquor in their hand." Seeking immediate intervention of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Congress legislator Mukesh Sharma said that such activities have destroyed the image of the capital and the matches must be banned immediately. Shoaib Iqbal, another Congress MLA, too protested against the games saying that "it is against our culture. The matches should be banned. "What happens in a night club is now being seen in the staudium," he said. Taking note of their demand, the Finance Minister said that he would personally go to the stadium on April 4 during the IPL match to see whatever action is required. "I am taking the issue very seriously. I have ordered the officials to file a detailed the report soon in the matter," Walia added. BJP MLAs were not present in the House as they have been expelled for three days since yesterday for their unruly behavior in the Assembly.
