A dogged partnership from Jesse Ryder and Kane Williamson took New Zealand close to the follow-on mark against India at tea on day three of the opening test.
Resuming on 69 for two on Saturday, the visitors were 237 for four at tea, needing 51 runs to avoid the follow-on.
Left-hander Ryder (53 not out) and debutant Williamson (45 not out) had already added 100 runs in their unbeaten fifth wicket partnership.
Ryder, who grew in confidence as his innings progressed, got a life on 11 when Rahul Dravid dropped him at a wide slip position off Shanthakumaran Sreesanth.
The 20-year old Williamson was particularly impressive with his footwork against the Indian spinners.
India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni utilised all his resources, including throwing the ball to Sachin Tendulkar to bowl his legspinners, but failed to break the partnership.
India's spinners picked up the wickets of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor after their century stand for the third wicket before lunch.
McCullum (65) and Taylor (56), the most accomplished of New Zealand's batsmen in the touring side, stitched together a 104-run partnership before the latter drove straight to Vangipurappu Laxman at short-midwicket off Harbhajan Singh.
McCullum had looked solid, using his feet well against the spinners during his 122-ball stay at the wicket, and hit 11 boundaries in his knock.
However, he dragged his feet out trying to defend left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha's delivery that spun across his bat. Dhoni made no mistake behind the stumps.
