Non-compliance on age, tenure limitations will lead to fund cuts: Gill to federations

New Delhi, July 27 (ANI): Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs M.S. Gill has warned sports federations that the government will cut off funding to them if they refuse to comply with controversial age and tenure limitations.

Gill was quoted by a news agency as saying that more than a third of the 68 associations are yet to incorporate the new regulations.

"The government is not satisfied with the functioning of the (federations) because none of them have fully complied with the good governance practices prescribed by the government in the guidelines," Gill was quoted, as saying.

"A recent study undertaken by the government shows that most of the (federations) are not having proper election bye-laws that can ensure fair and transparent elections," he added.

Ministry guidelines require that the president of any federation, including the Indian Olympic Association, should not be in office for more than three terms. An age limit for all office-bearers is set at not more than 70.

The IOA and the federations have rejected the guidelines, seeing them as an assault on their autonomy.

The IOC had warned India in May of potential sanctions over government interference in the running of sports federations. (ANI)
