India suffer 0-3 loss against South Korea

S S Ramaswamy Guangzhou, Nov 15 (PTI) India suffered a 0-3 thrashing at the hands of formidable South Korea in their second preliminary round match of the men''s volleyball Group B league competition in the Asian Games here today. India, who began their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Kazakhstan, lost 19-25, 20-25, 19-25 today in a contest that lasted more than an hour. India had beaten the same opponents 3-2 during this year''s continental championship in Iran, but they could not repeat the show as Korean spikers Park Chul Woo and Moon Sung Min crashed through their net blocks from all angles to help their team avenge their defeat at the Asian championships. India now need to defeat Vietnam tomorrow to progress in the tournament. The Indian players did level to stay with their rivals till 12-all in the opening set after Sanjay Banwari hit a winning spike while Sube Singh blocked well to tie the scores. But Korea, with Park in his elements, eventually regained the momentum and won it in 22 minutes. Mohan Ukkarapandian''s two service aces helped India recover in the initial stages of the second set at 8-all but Park''s razor-sharp spikes from the side of the court proved too hot to handle and the Koreans steadily built up the points and won the set in 24 minutes. The last set saw Indian attacker G Pradeep''s shots being blocked out by the Korean trio of Moon, Park and Shin Yung Suk to help the latter to take a handy six point lead. Banwari and Naveen Manidurai led the Indian fight-back with powerful spikes in the front after the team made a series of mistakes in receiving the ball but the Koreans were not to be stopped with Shin excelling from the middle with his fast attacks. The third set lasted 23 minutes. India''s last preliminary match against North Korea is on November 18.
