Cape Town, June 21 (DPA) Portugal's 7-0 win over North Korea was the biggest football World Cup victory since Germany beat Saudi Arabia 8-0 in the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea.

Four years ago in Germany, Argentina scored the most convincing victory with a 6-0 win over Serbia and Montenegro.

In 1998, Bulgaria was beaten 1-6 by Spain and Russia beat Cameroon 6-1 in the United States tournament four years earlier in 1994.

Germany were again the most prolific in 1990 when they beat the United Arab Emirates 5-1 in the group stages.

But defeats are not what they used to be. In 1982 Hungary beat El Salvador 10-1, which remains the biggest ever World Cup victory, and in 1974, Yugoslavia beat Zaire 9-0.
