South African government agencies have spent about 11 million rand ($1.5 million) in public funds for World Cup tickets despite warnings on wasteful expenditure, the opposition Democratic Alliance said on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, who is trying to enforce discipline for ministries overseeing Africa's largest economy as it emerges from its first recession in 17 years, warned last month such spending would be considered "irregular ... and fruitless and wasteful expenditure".

The opposition party also provided documents from the agencies presented to parliament in response to questioning to support its claims.

"The purchase of World Cup tickets by government departments ... is not an acceptable way for government departments to be spending their budgets," Tim Harris, a DA member of parliament said in a statement.

The South African Treasury has no power to intervene and was looking for the auditor-general to investigate the spending when it conducts 2009/2010 financial year audits, local media reported.
