Chess tourney to begin on August 1

The PNG International Rating Pune District Open Chess Championship will soon kick off its second edition, with players of all ages and rankings coming together to vie for the top spot.

The tournament will take place at the Deccan Gymkhana from August 1 to August 9, and has been organised by Global Mind Sports Foundation and the Pune District Chess Association.

The participants will play a total of nine rounds, one per day, in a Swiss league format, with the matches taking place between 10 am to 2 pm.

Prizes will be awarded to the top 15 players, and separate awards have been instituted for the best three players in the Women's, Veteran's (above 60), Under-7, Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15 and Under-19 categories respectively.

The tournament will be governed by the latest FIDE rules, and players will be allowed a total match time of 90 minutes, with 30-second increments. However, in the case of analogue clocks, the timing will be increased to 2 hours without increments. In case of a tie, the tiebreaker will be resolved by the methods of Buchholz, Med-Buchholz, Progressive and finally a Blitz Game.

Players who hold the titles of GM, WGM, IM, IWM or current National Champion will not have to pay an entry fee. This rule also includes those players with a rating of more than 2400. The entry fees for the remaining players vary from Rs 300 for those with a rating between 2201 and 2399, to Rs 1500 for unrated players.
