New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) Veteran Yasin Merchant and Manan Chandra returned empty handed as they failed to register a single win in the preliminary stage of the Sangson Six-Red World Snooker Championship in Bangkok. With their ouster, Indian challenge came to an end in the six-day-long event. Merchant and Chandra lost all their respective five matches and failed to qualify for the pre-quarterfinal stage. Playing in Group ''C'', Merchant suffered twin defeats against Brazil''s Igor Figueiredo and England''s Stuart Bingham last night. Chandra in his group ''D'' went down to Hong Kong''s Fung Kwok Wai. Merchant failed to showcase his cue control and masterly dipping of the multicoloured for which he is famous for and lost 02-38 36-11 22-33 00-55 10-38 43-17 04-35 to Bingham in his first clash of the day. Against Figueiredo, the bespectacled Merchant showed nerves of steal in a highly pressure situation but failed to turn the table on Brazilian. Busan Asian Games gold medallist Merchant went down 44-14 00-49 17-44 00-43 24-27 44-29 37-00 41-24 18-37 against Figueiredo to finish his league standings at 5-0. Chandra once again failed to lift his game at the crucial junctures and lost (4-5) 44-20 08-60 01-53 38-19 52-03 00-54 36-22 00-52 02-38 to Kwok Wai. Kwok Wai kept Chandra under pressure with lovely safety positional play and dipped the coloured ball in different pockets with touch of softness.
