Formula 1: Good outing for Force India

Published>Sat, Feb 27 10 03:46 PM

Barcelona, Feb 27 (IANS) Force India enjoyed another good outing on the second day of the pre-season Formula One test as Vitantonio Liuzzi turned in the fourth fastest lap of the day in 1 minute 21.056 seconds.

The team's preparation for the start of the 2010 Championship continued as Liuzzi worked through an intensive programme that included a full race distance, completing 90 laps.

After completing shorter runs in the morning, Liuzzi started a race simulation after the lunchtime break. Aside from a red flag period shortly after his second stop for tyres, the VJM03 performed reliably throughout Friday.

Liuzzi said: 'We can be quite happy about today's programme. We completed everything without any issues and the car showed very good reliability, even when we did the race simulation. Again, it is responding very well and we are improving day by day so everything is looking positive.

'We still don't know where we are relative to the others, and we will only see in Bahrain, but overall we can be really happy. We now have two more days of testing to try and get as much information as possible.'

Meanwhile, Nico Hulkenberg (Williams) was the quickest in 1:20.614 (99 laps), ahead of former double World champion Fernando Alonso of Ferrari (1:20.637, 134 laps) and Pedro de la Rosa of Sauber-Ferrari (1:20.973, 114 laps) while seven times champion Michael Schumacher (Mercedes GP) was seventh with a 1:21.689 (85 laps).

Schumacher admits his car is too slow to win Bahrain grand prix

Published>Sat, Feb 27 10 03:40 PM

London, Feb 27 (ANI): Seven times Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has admitted that his car is too slow to win the first grand prix of the season in Bahrain.

The Mercedes GP star ended pre-season testing in just over a second behind Williams rookie Nico Hulkenberg, who was the quickest.

Schumacher said: "We're not perfectly in the position we would like to be, probably to be competing to win the first races straight away."

The seven-time world champion believes Mercedes GP's objective will be to compete with the top teams.

"It is very difficult to judge what the real picture is right now," The Sun quoted Schumacher, as saying.

Hulkenberg set the pace in Barcelona with a best lap of 1min 20.614secs.

Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was two-hundreths of a second behind in good conditions at the Circuit de Catalunya.

Pedro De la Rosa of Sauber was just over three-tenths back in third, ahead of Tonio Liuzzi of Force India and Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel.

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton finished a place behind Schumacher in eighth. (ANI)

Emergency shipments of condoms as Winter Games athletes ditch no sex before a game

Published>Sat, Feb 27 10 03:36 PM

Melbourne, Feb 27 (ANI): Emergency shipments of condoms are being sent to the Olympic Villages, after the Winter Games athletes ditched the theory of no sex before a game.

An "emergency airlift" of 8500 condoms is on the way to the Olympic Villages in Vancouver and Whistler for the athletes.

The first shipment of 100,000 or 14 condoms per visiting athlete was provided by the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research apparently wasn't enough, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Foundation executive director Kerry Whiteside told The Kingston Whig Standard: "When we heard about the condom shortage in Vancouver, we felt it important to respond immediately. Safer sex is key to preventing the spread of the HIV virus."

Canadian Olympic team mentor Marnie McBean said athletes were stuffing their pockets with prophylactics to keep as souvenirs from the games.

The demand for condoms at the Vancouver Games is in stark contrast to Beijing. Last fall, a collector auctioned 5000 condoms that were left over from the 2008 Summer Games.

Free condoms have been distributed at the Olympics since the 1992 games in Barcelona. (ANI)

Lankan media joins chorus of appreciation for Tendulkar

Published Sat, Feb 27 10 03:06 PM

Colombo, Feb 27 (PTI) Much like their counterparts in other cricket-playing nations, the Sri Lankan media too bowed in appreciation for Sachin Tendulkar, lauding his historic and awe-inspiring double ton in the Gwalior ODI. Calling him a "batting god", editorials lavished praise on Tendulkar who became the first batsman in the history of one-day cricket to score a double hundered when he struck 200 not out against South Africa. "Sachin Tendulkar quenched the thirst of millions by his record breaking double century in ODIs," said a report. The state-owned ''Daily News'' devoted a voluminous article on the Indian and wrote, "It has been said and accepted that in India cricket is religion and Tendulkar god. And that belief came true when the batting god delivered in making the first double hundred in the history of one-day international cricket." "At 36 years of age, he does not seem to have slowed. Like all great batsmen do, he first got his eye in, got a feel of how the wicket was playing, its bounce and movement and then began the batting show of the shows. MORE PTI TVS PM

Premier League Portsmouth enter administration

Published>Fri, Feb 26 10 05:26 PM

Portsmouth traded their short-term Premier League status for the hope of long-term survival when they went into administration on Friday.

The debt-ridden south-coast club had been due back in the High Court next week to face an adjourned winding-up order from the British government's Revenue and Customs department but, after failing to secure new funding or a new owner, instead became the first Premier League club to go into administration.

Already seven points adrift at the bottom of the league, Portsmouth will now suffer an automatic nine-point deduction, almost certainly condemning the 2008 FA Cup winners to relegation.

Portsmouth are some 70 million pounds ($107.3 million) in debt and attempts to find a new owner -- the sixth in the last year -- have failed.

The club issued a statement on their website (www.portsmouthfc.co.uk) confirming that they officially went into administration at 1020 GMT.

The administrators will hold a news conference at Portsmouth's Fratton Park ground later on Friday.

Lee confident of returning to Australian XI

Published>Fri, Feb 26 10 05:22 PM

Melbourne, Feb 26 (ANI): Fast bowler Brett Lee, who retired from Test cricket to prolong his ODI and Twenty20 career, is confident of returning to the Australian XI before the start of the T20 Wolrd Cup in the West Indies once he was fully fit.

The question remains who exactly Lee will replace in the Caribbean for the World Twenty20 in May.

Australia's new-look attack of Shaun Tait, Dirk Nannes, Doug Bollinger, Mitchell Johnson and Ryan Harris have performed well this summer and it will be hard to replace them with Lee.

Lee, however, was confident he could return to the starting XI once he was fully fit.

"The only thing I can worry about is getting my elbow right and my fitness back to the level it is at now and what I'm really happy with," said Lee, whose elbow injury has sidelined him since the end of October.

"I want to get out there and enjoy my cricket. And if I can bowl the way I did towards the end of last year, hopefully I shouldn't have a problem," the Daily Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

Twenty20 captain Michael Clarke said before flying out to New Zealand: "His statistics don't lie in all three forms. He's a wonderful player and has been for a long time for Australia, so if he's fully fit I'm sure he'll make his way back into any form of the game."

Cricket NSW chief executive David Gilbert said Lee had always responded to tough times. (ANI)

Kieswetter's flair leaves Flower in dilemma over Prior as first-choice wicketkeeper

Published>Fri, Feb 26 10 05:16 PM

London, Feb 26 (ANI): England coach Andy Flower has refused to back Matt Prior as his first-choice wicketkeeper for the team.

Prior, who played as a specialist batsman, top scored with 64 not out as England beat a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI by seven wickets in their final warm-up before Sunday's first one-dayer against their hosts.

Flower said: "It was an opportunity to look at Craig Kieswetter. He kept nicely. He looks a natural catcher. He's a wicketkeeping batsman, so it is an option."

The decision is clearly not an easy one. Prior has been instrumental to the success of the Test side and played a key role in winning the Ashes last summer, The Sun reports.

However, his one-day form has been less impressive. Prior averages 24.24 in one-dayers and 21.16 in Twenty20 internationals.

Kieswetter is brimming with confidence and has shown the kind of clean hitting at the top of the order England have not seen since Marcus Trescothick retired.

His 143 on Tuesday was not chanceless but it was the kind of innings that sets him apart from his rival in the shorter forms of the game.

Prior's top score for England in one-dayers is 87. (ANI)

New York, February 26 (ANI): Tiger Woods has reportedly threatened to take People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to court over their planned billboards bearing his face and the slogan, "Too much sex can be a bad thing."

A legal team for the disgraced golfer was said to have contacted the animal activists, threatening them with legal consequences over the use of Woods' image in their campaign urging owners to neuter their pets.

"We were contacted by Tiger's lawyers at IMG who kindly, but firmly, told us we were not authorized to use his image on the billboard, and would we desist," the New York Post quoted a PETA source as saying.

PETA has now apparently turned their attention to another famous philanderer, South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, with the possible tagline: "Your dog doesn't have to go to South America to get laid."

Woods has been on an indefinite break from professional golf after admitting infidelity followed by reports that linked to him as many as 19 mistresses. (ANI)

Published Fri, Feb 26 10 02:56 PM

Karachi, Feb 27 (PTI) Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal is being questioned for suspected involvement in match fixing and could be ignored for the Twenty20 World Championship if he fails to prove his innocence, a media report here has claimed. A report in ''The News'' quoting sources said Akmal was axed from the Pakistan squad for the two Twenty20 matches against England in Dubai because of the suspicion that he might have deliberately dropped catches during the second Test in Sydney against Australia last month. Bridge withdraws from England selection

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 07:25 PM

Manchester City defender Wayne Bridge has made himself unavailable for selection by England and will not go to the World Cup finals, he said in a statement on Thursday.

His decision comes in the wake of media allegations that John Terry, his former Chelsea team mate who is also in the England squad, had an extra-marital affair with Bridge's former girlfriend.

Bridge was a club mate of Terry's at Chelsea before joining Manchester City last year.

Terry has been stripped of the England captaincy as a result of the publicity surrounding the matter, and on Thursday, Bridge, who has played for England 36 times, said he no longer wanted to be considered for the national squad.

In the statement, issued to Sky Sports News, Bridge said: "I have thought long and hard about my position in the England football team in the light of the reporting of the events over the last few weeks.

"It has always been an honour to play for England. However, after careful thought I believe my position in the squad is now untenable and potentially divisive.

"Sadly therefore, I feel, for the sake of the team, and in order to avoid what will be inevitable distractions, I have decided not to put myself forward for selection.

"I have today informed the management of this decision. I wish the team all the very best in South Africa."

His decision leaves England coach Fabio Capello with a problem at left-back as Ashley Cole, another former Chelsea team mate, is out until May at the earliest with a broken ankle and may not be fit for the World Cup finals in South Africa which start on June 11.

Bridge and Terry are due to meet on the pitch for the first time since details of the alleged affair were made public when Manchester City visit Chelsea on Saturday.

Chelsea and Arsenal look to boost title challenges

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 06:15 PM

London, Feb 25 (DPA) Leaders Chelsea and challengers Arsenal will be out to take advantage of the absence of a match for Manchester United this weekend as the Premier League title race continues to hot up.

With United taking on Aston Villa in the Carling Cup final Sunday, victory for Chelsea would restore their four-point lead over United at the top while Arsenal could close to within two points of the champions in third if they can take maximum points at Stoke City.

Chelsea go into their meeting with fifth-placed Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime on the back of a defeat at Inter Milan in the Champions League.

More worryingly for manager Carlo Ancelotti, he could be without his first-choice goalkeeper Petr Cech, who suffered a leg injury in Milan.

'We don't know now (how bad it is),' the Italian said. 'We have to wait some days and we have to do a check control on his calf. 'I don't know (if he will be fit to play against City). We don't know, we have to wait.'

Back-to-back home wins have restored Arsenal's belief that they can still win the title, partly because they have a game in hand on United, but more because they do not have to play any of the big sides in their remaining matches.

Veteran defender Sol Campbell, who returned to the club just last month, could play his fourth match if William Gallas does not recover from a calf injury in time for the visit to Stoke.

The 35-year-old, who won the Double with Arsenal in 1998, believes the Londoners are still very much in the title race.

Arsenal have lost on their last two visits to Stoke but if they win this weekend they will be breathing down the necks of United. 'It's simple, we have to win as many games as possible,' Campbell said.

'Other teams at the top will be playing each other, so we just have to look after ourselves and make sure we're firing on all cylinders. Whoever plays must give it everything they've got in these remaining games, and see where it takes us.'

Liverpool will be waiting to take advantage of any slip-up by Manchester City to boost their bid for fourth spot and the last Champions League berth.

Rafael Benitez's side take on Blackburn Rovers at Anfield Sunday in the first of three consecutive very winnable games and victory would also put the pressure onto the current fourth-placed team, Tottenham Hotspur, who welcome in-form Everton on the same day.

Bottom side Portsmouth, facing the prospect of going into administration - which would result in a 10-point penalty and almost certain relegation - are away to fellow strugglers Burnley.

Bolton Wanderers, the other side in the bottom three, host Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Birmingham play Wigan and Sunderland take on Fulham in the weekend's other match.

Former football Olympians from AP fire salvo at AIFF

Hyderabad, Feb 25 (PTI) Former football Olympians from Andhra Pradesh have protested the appointment of AIFF executive member C R Visswanathan to resolve a dispute between two factions and alleged that he was running an "illegal" show in the state. In a letter to the AIFF, the former footballers have demanded to call back Visswanathan, who was sent by the national federation to resolve the dispute between two factions of Andhra Pradesh Football Association (APFA). They alleged that Visswanathan has been conducting activities, including selection of teams, which they said was outside the ambit of his job. 260-plus would be a good score: Motera curator

Published Thu, Feb 25 10 05:51 PM

S S Ramaswamy Ahmedabad, Feb 25 (PTI) Unlike the feather-beds in Jaipur and Gwalior, the pitch at Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium at Motera here, venue of the inconsequential third and final ODI between India and South Africa on Saturday, may have something for the bowlers with 260 the par score, the curator said today. "I expect it to be a good one-day wicket though I can give you a clearer picture only tomorrow as the process of preparing it is still on. There''s not going to be much grass and a score of 250-260 would be a good total," Test cricketer-turned-pitch curator Dhiraj Parsana told PTI. India made 298 for nine and 401 for three in the first two ODIs while the Proteas have replied with 297 and 248 respectively. Dew is expected to play a significant role in the contest that has become only of academic interest after India''s comprehensive victory in the second ODI at Gwalior last night. "Over the last two days the dew fall has been quite heavy because of clear skies and little wind. If it''s windy it drives away the dew. But we are prepared to counter it with the use of chemicals on the outfield from 7 pm on match day. We are also stopping watering of the outfield from today," Parsana elaborated. Dew factor was nullified by Sachin Tendulkar''s extraordinary and record-setting 200 not out at Gwalior though it was evident that the hosts, bowling second, were struggling to keep the ball dry due to the wet outfield. .

Benitez backs Gerrard for England captaincy

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 05:45 PM

London, Feb 25(ANI): Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez reckons if striker Steven Gerrard is handed over the England captaincy for this summer's World Cup, he can lap up the challenge and achieve greater heights.

Regular captain John Terry was stripped of the responsibility earlier this month following allegations over his private life and replacement Rio Ferdinand is struggling with a back injury.

Vice-captain Gerrard is set to take the armband for his country from injured Ferdinand in next week's friendly against Egypt, and could be in the frame to lead his country with doubts continuing over Ferdinand's fitness.

"I think captaining England will be good for his confidence and could also have a good effect on him," The Sun quoted Benitez, as saying.

"We know he is important for us, and also important for England. I think he has to take the responsibility as a positive sign," he added.

The 29-year-old made his international debut in 2000, and represented England in the UEFA European Championships in 2000 and 2004 as well as the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where he was the team's top goalscorer with two goals. (ANI)

Ashley Cole refuses to talk about Cheryl betrayal

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 05:35 PM

London, Feb 25 (ANI): English footballer Ashley Cole has refused to divulge any information related to his betraying his wife Cheryl.

The left-back Chelsea player, who is currently having treatment for his broken ankle at a clinic in Capbreton, a seaside town near Biarritz, dodged questions about how he could betray the Girls Aloud member.

"I just can't talk about that," the Sun quoted Cole, 29, who is at the clinic with team-mate Michael Essien and physio Thierry Laurent, as saying.

He tried to hide behind an exercise machine, and wearing a supportive sandal on his injured foot, he hobbled away on crutches after refusing to comment further.

"Ashley is in another world. He's trying to get on with his rehab but his mind is clearly elsewhere," a source said.

"His ankle is painful but it's nothing compared to what he's going through with Cheryl," the source added. (ANI)

Australia begin NZ tour with verbal goof-ups

Published Thu, Feb 25 10 05:15 PM

Wellington, Feb 25 (PTI) Australia began their New Zealand tour with verbal bloopers by coach Tim Nielsen and Twenty20 captain Michael Clarke that had the entire team red-faced. Coach Tim Nielsen started the proceedings soon after his arrival at the airport, saying "To be honest, we haven''t had a lot of sex, um, success over here." And once he was through with the interaction, the Australia coach had a humble request to make even though the local media was in no mood to oblige him. "Could you wipe the sex bit, I don''t really want the wife hearing that," Nielsen said. A day after Nielsen''s faux pas, it was Clarke who put his foot in the mouth today. Talking about New Zealand pacer Shane Bond, Clarke said the 34-year-old pacer was still a threat and his teammates would have to do the homework to counter him. "We''ll have a good look at footage of bondage...ahmm, Bondy," said Clarke, triggering laughter. "Geez I feel like the coach, what''s going on," Clarke was quoted as saying by the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA). Even though Clarke restructured the sentence and delivered it again, he realised the damage had been done. "Front page, I can see it now...," Clarke sighed as he made a hasty exit.

Semifinal would be a good result for India: Ashok Kumar

Published Thu, Feb 25 10 05:05 PM

Philem Dipak Singh New Delhi, Feb 25 (PTI) Member of India''s lone World Cup winning team Ashok Kumar doesn''t expect miracles from the current team under Rajpal Singh and feels reaching the semifinals would be a decent result for them. "We will have the home advantage and I am hoping that we can finish at the podium or at least reach the semifinals. That would be a good result for the country," Ashok told PTI. Even that would not be a stroll in the park for the Indian team and Ashok, who scored India''s winning score in the 1975 World Cup final in Kuala Lumpur, said the current team lacks match-winners and the players themselves lack killer instinct. "There are few good players in the current squad, as compared to our days. We had stalwarts like Ajit Pal Singh, B P Govinda, Surjeet Singh, Harcharan Singh, myself and many others who were match-winners. There are not many such players among the current players," Ashok, son of legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand, said. "Moreover, the current players lack the killer instinct. I don''t know the reason why. It may be due to lack of emotional attachment of the game in general," he said. MORE PTI PDS AY

Mancini shrugs off pressure despite Man City's FA Cup debacle

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 04:19 PM

London, Feb 25(ANI): Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini insists that he is not under pressure despite his club being dumped out of the FA Cup after losing to Stoke City.

Wednesday's 3-1 defeat means Champions League qualification is City's only hope of salvaging a stuttering season. Striker Craig Bellamy's goal did give the lead to City, but Stoke opened the scoring in the 79th minute through substitute Dave Kitson, goals from Shawcross and Tuncay in the extra half-hour. "I'm not feeling any pressure, none at all, I just feel disappointment. We played well and had six or seven good chances," The Sun quoted Mancini, as saying. Now we have 13 league games left and we need some good results," he added.

He further said he was disappointed because of the loss, and the red card to striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

"My opinion is that we played very well. We dominated the game and had six or seven chances to score a goal before the sending off of Emmanuel. Football is strange. When you play well and have a lot of chances, if you don't score something can change the game," Mancini said.

"Until the situation it was our best performance in the last three or four games. Manu played very well, fantastic. For me - maximum yellow card, it was not so dangerous," he added. (ANI)

Afridi to play for Bangladeshi T20 team in Sharjah

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 03:35 PM

Islamabad, Feb.25 (ANI): Flamboyant Pakistani all-rounder Shahid Afridi would be seen in action during Bangladesh's T20 championship, Bashundhara Cup, which would be played in Sharjah later this year.

Afridi would be playing for the Brothers Union Club, Chittagong in the competition.

Afridi told PakPassion.net that he is eagerly looking forward to the tournament, and would try to give his best for the team he is representing.

"I'm looking forward to playing in the Bangaldeshi T20 competition. It will be my first taste of action in this competition and I will as always give my all for my team to win this trophy," he said.

However, Afridi made it clear that he would take part in the T20 league only if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) grants him permission.

"Yes playing in a T20 competition is a good experience, but I will only play in these tournaments when I get clearance and approval from the Pakistan Cricket Board. I was supposed to play for the Nashua Dolphins in South Africa this year, but as the matches clashed with the two T20 matches in Dubai, I therefore did not play in the South African T20 competition," he said.

The star all-rounder has been signed by a number of domestic teams across the world.

Besides representing the Deccan Chargers in the cash rich Indian Premier League (IPL), Afridi has also been signed up by Hampshire, the Nashua Dolphins, and South Australia.

He is also due to play for the Emirates Airlines team in a quadrangular tournament involving South Africa's Cape Cobras, and English County teams Sussex and Surrey in the UAE in March. (ANI)

Security fears still haunt England hockey squad

Published Thu, Feb 25 10 03:20 PM

London, Feb 25 (PTI) England hockey squad is leaving for New Delhi today to participate in the World Cup starting Sunday but security arrangements in the Indian capital are still a concern for the players, according to a report. England''s Hockey performance director David Faulkner acknowledged there were apprehensions among the players related to security and that they were in contact with the British High Commission in Delhi regarding the arrangements, ''The Times'' reported. "The excitement of playing in a World Cup has been dented and it is unsettling," Faulkner was quoted as saying by the newspaper. "The safety and security of the England squad remains our priority and we are in daily contact with the British High Commission in Delhi regarding security arrangements. We fully intend to go to the World Cup," Faulkner said. Head coach Jason Lee said specialist security personnel will be attached 24 hours a day at the team hotel as well as at the bus and stadium. "We''ll be stuck in the hotel a lot more than normal and I guess we''ll be suffering from cabin fever. But the players can amuse themselves with all the technology and games around and who knows, some of them might even read a book," Lee said. The England players, who open their campaign in the mega event against Australia on Sunday, will reach New Delhi from Doha where they had a pre-tournament training camp.

Tendulkar probably the greatest batsman I've ever seen play, live: Clarke

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 03:15 PM

Wellington, Feb.25 (ANI): Australian Twenty-20 captain Michael Clarke has described India's Sachin Tendulkar as the greatest batsman he has ever seen playing live, and was not surprised whenhe became the first player to score a double hundred in a one-day international.

Tendulkar hit a majestic 200 not out in Gwalior against South Africa on Wednesday, beating the previous highest score of 194, jointly made by Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry against Bangladesh in Bulawayo in 2009 and Pakistan's Saeed Anwar against India at Chennai in 1997.

"His record speaks for itself. I can't say I'm surprised. He's probably the greatest batsman I've ever seen play, live," The Age quoted Clarke, as saying here.

India claimed a 2-0 lead in the three-match series, as Tendulkar added the ODI highest-score record to his world marks for most runs and centuries in Tests and one-day cricket.

"I didn't watch any of it but I'd like to get back this afternoon and see some highlights," said Clarke as his Australia Twenty20 side prepared for Friday's clash with New Zealand.

Clarke says the 36-year-old's Tendulkar's longevity in the game has been one of his greatest achievements.

"He's a wonderful guy and someone I not only enjoy watching on TV, but I've loved having the opportunity to play against him as well," said Clarke, 28.

"He has got so much class. His greatest strength is the longevity, to be able to be so successful at a young age and to still be doing the same thing 20 years on.

"He made his (Test) debut at 16 and he's still as good as ever, if not better. We're blessed to still have such a great player playing this game." (ANI)

Panaji, Feb 25 (PTI) Mumbai''s Parth Sanghvi has become the youngest scuba open water diver when he plunged 40 feet underwater near Grande Island in Goa, Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) said today. Matthews' FA Cup final boots fetch 38,400 stg at auction

Published Thu, Feb 25 10 02:45 PM

The boots worn by Stanley Matthews in the 1953 FA Cup final have been sold for 38,400 pounds ($58,890) at auction.

The boots were expected to fetch about 8,000 pounds when they went under the hammer at auctioneers Bonhams in Chester but fetched almost five times that amount.

Matthews played an inspirational role for Blackpool against Bolton Wanderers in the final, as his team, trailing 3-1 with 20 minutes to play, came back to win 4-3.

Although Stan Mortensen scored a hat-trick for Blackpool, the match has entered soccer folklore as "The Matthews Final".

Dan Davies, the sports consultant at Bonhams, told Sky Sports News: "I'd previously said I would be delighted if they fetched 10,000 pounds. I didn't expect them to go for so much. We do get these surprises now and again though."

Matthews was one of the greatest players of his generation and became the first player to be knighted in 1965. He died aged 85 in 2000.

Hockey gods and bobs make it Canada's day

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 02:35 PM

The Canadian men restored order in their Olympic ice hockey house and headed to the semi-finals after a 7-3 rout of Russia on Wednesday, a day of redemption and medal manna from heaven for the host nation.

In country where hockey is religion, Canadians rejoiced to be back on the medal track in Winter Games venue Vancouver where maple leaf-clad fans poured into the streets three days after a demoralising loss to the Americans.

We actually had doubts, about the game with Russia, but they won, and how, said Mindy Mahil, a fan perched on a fountain waving a large red-and-white flag.

Canada's happiness was compounded minutes later as two of the women's bobsleigh teams took the top two medals, the gold going to Kaillie Humphries in a thrilling final that saw a highly rated German team flip over on the fast ice track.

With a gold that takes Canada to the top of the medal table alongside the United States and Germany, two silvers, a bronze and the big hockey win, Wednesday was Canada's day.

After a public outcry over a low medal count and the hockey defeat, Canada stood confidently atop the gold medals table with seven, alongside the United States and Germany.

Day 12 of the Winter Games had its notable losers too.

South Korea were disqualified while they were celebrating what they thought was their victory in women's short track 3,000 metres relay.

The gold went to China, while the Koreans' cheers turned to tears and they rushed past reporters without stopping to explain what referees deemed a push in the relay exchange.

It was also a disappointing day for top American skier Lindsey Vonn, the downhill gold medallist who crashed out on a fog-enveloped giant slalom and broke her little finger.

The giant slalom second leg fell prey to poor weather and will run instead on Thursday morning, with no Vonn and little hope for team mate and defending champion Julia Mancuso.

In a different type of skiing, Australia's Lydia Lassila flew and spun her way to Olympic gold in women's freestyle aerials, cleanly landing two of the hardest jumps of the day.

Ever since I started this sport, I wanted to jump like a man, said Lassila, when asked why she tried such a difficult jump on her first effort.

'STILL OUR GAME'

For all of Canada's medal stash, no Olympic honour is more coveted than the gold one in men's hockey.

You want to do well because you're proud and because you think hockey is Canada's game, said Canada coach Mike Babcock after Wednesday's win.

Now it's pretty obvious it's the world's game but we still think it's ours and I'm a bit of a redneck so I like to think it's ours.

After losing to the United States in the final round of preliminary matches on Sunday, Babcock told the nation the team had chosen to take a longer route to get where they wanted to be. And so far, he was right, and it has been pretty scenic.

Forced to play an extra match to qualify for the quarter-finals, Canada dispatched Germany 8-2 on Tuesday. Twenty four hours later, they lined up for a mouthwatering clash with Russia and dominated from start to finish.

The U.S. was the first team to reach the semi-finals when they beat Switzerland 2-0 on Wednesday, both goals coming from Zach Parise.

The United States will face the winners of the Finland-Czech Republic quarter-final, while Canada will meet either Slovakia or Sweden, the defending gold medallists.

The semi-final teams will all be determined by Wednesday night.

FALLING IN THE FOG

Heavy fog at Whistler mountain forced the postponement of the women's giant slalom until Thursday morning. Austrian Elisabeth Goergl was leading France's Taina Barioz by 0.02 seconds.

Vonn's fall wreaked havoc on Mancuso, who was forced to stop her run with Vonn still on the course and make a new run later in worse snow conditions.

The two-time silver medallist at these Games finished back in 18th place and left the course in tears.

I know that she is mad and probably frustrated and probably mad at me but I can't help that I fell, Vonn said.

I wanted to finish, I was having a great run and wish I could have come down and not have her be flagged and that is absolutely not what I wanted.

Merchandisers had been cashing in on her appeal by selling t-shirts and baseball caps with Vonn-Couver emblazoned on them, but she has failed to live up to the hype.

She defied a painful shin injury to win gold in the women's downhill and a bronze in the super-G, but blew her chances of adding to her medal haul by falling in her two other events.

Despite the broken pinkie, Vonn is expected to race in the final women's Alpine event, the slalom scheduled for Friday.

As the Games enter the final stretch, two athletes accumulated their second gold medal. Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic won the women's 5,000 metres speedskating gold while Marcus Hellner led Sweden to a surprise victory in the men's cross country relay.

Prying eyes catch Lara Bingle's little meltdown at Twenty20 cricket

Melbourne, Feb 25 (ANI): Aussie cricketer Michael Clarke's fiancee Lara Bingle couldn't escape prying eyes when she had a little meltdown at the Twenty20 cricket this week.

Witnesses at the Members Stand in the Sydney Cricket Ground claim the 22-year-old swimsuit model's emotions were running high at the game.

And Clarke was forced to make himself into a 'human wall' to shield her from enthralled spectators.

"She clearly thought she and Clarke had found a quiet spot," News.com.au quoted an observer as saying.

Bingle has said she finds cricket 'boring' and has been conspicuously absent from the WAGs box of late. (ANI)

Tendulkar rested for Ahmedabad ODI against South Africa

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 02:06 PM

New Delhi, Feb.25 (ANI): Cricket lovers in Ahmedabad, where the third and the last one day of the series against South Africa is scheduled to be played on February 27, would be deprived of vintage Sachin Tendulkar show, as the master blaster has been rested for the match.

According to sources, the team management has decided to rest Tendulkar and test the bench strength in Ahmedabad, as India has already pocketed the three match series.

National selectors will meet at Chennai today (Thursday) to pick the Indian squad for third and final One-dayer against South Africa and also the probables for the 2011 cricket World Cup, a day after Tendulkar blasted his way into the record books by hitting the first ever double century in ODI's against the Proteas.

Tendulkar played an incredible and heart-stopping knock of 200 not out which came off just 147 balls, treating the capacity crowd at the Captain Roop Singh stadium to a stunning exhibition of strokeplay.

It was not only Tendulkar's 46th ODI century but it also marked the highest score in one-dayers, eclipsing the previous record of 194 which was held by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar and Zimbabwe's Charles Conventry.

The little master was on fire and the South African bowlers bore the brunt as they were literally made to bleed runs at the small ground at Gwalior. His sublime innings was bejewelled with 25 fours and three sixes. (ANI)

Hopes rest on man who beat the bullet

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 01:21 PM

New Delhi, Feb. 25 -- When it comes to the World Cup, drag flicker Sandeep Singh does not have fond memories. The young penalty corner specialist missed the last edition at Monchengladbach in 2006 due to a freak accident just before the team's departure to Germany. Sandeep was travelling by train from Chandigarh to join the team in Delhi when the gun of a CRPF soldier, sitting behind him, went off accidentally and the bullet hit him on the back. The injury meant he was not able to play his first World Cup. Four years later, Sandeep is a vital cog in India's plans at the 12th edition, starting at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium on Sunday. As the team's main drag flicker, a lot depends on Sandeep's performance, as penalty corners are the main mode of scoring in modern hockey. Though Diwakar Ram and Dhananjay Mahadik can also take the short corners, Sandeep will be the main man. India have thought out several strategies for penalty corners, including indirect drills, and will be using them in case things don't work out with Sandeep's flicks. So, what should Sandeep do in order to fulfil the team's aspirations? For a start, he has to be in top shape as he is also one of the three fullbacks. Consistency with the flicks is a must because wasted opportunities can be the difference between victory and defeat. "Nowadays, penalty corners are a main scoring weapon and teams that utilise their chances do well. Sandeep will be the key for India when it comes to PCs," said Jugraj Singh, a former India drag flicker whose career with the national team ended when he got injured in a road accident. Sandeep is more-or-less in a similar position. He has comeback successfully from the injury that kept him out of the Champions Challenge I at Salta and a lot is expected of him. "He will have to work with the goalkeeper to perfect his art, strengthen his flicks and be more consistent," said Jorge Lombi, former Argentine legend and now the assistant coach of that team.

Sandeep would need to improve his conversion rate and be more consistent. "A good strategy for penalty corner conversion is vital as PCs are very important in modern hockey," said Jugraj.

Security on mind, teams focus on task

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 01:15 PM

New Delhi, Feb. 25 -- The sub-continent can be a tough frontier to conquer. Like the weather, the spectators can be a revelation but the international teams, gathered in the Capital for the Hero Honda FIH World Cup, are up for the test. "Playing in India is a challenge but the players are confident of performing well," said 23-year-old Marvin Harper of South Africa during an interaction in a city hotel. The forward from Durban, who occasionally essays the role of a mid-fielder, said the players had received guidelines from the cricket team, engaged in a one-day series here, at a "management level". "We have received security advice from the cricket board," he said. Florian Fuchs of Germany shared the concern but said there were more important things to worry about. "India and Pakistan are the local teams and have the home advantage. However, we have a week to get accustomed to the ground conditions," said the 18-year-old striker. Fuchs said Germany's strength lay in its youthful side and they would look to give the hosts a tough fight, if the two teams meet. India are in Pool B, which includes Pakistan, and favourites the Netherlands. Dutch goalkeeper Guus Vogels differed with Fuchs and said conditions would not be a big factor. "Our preparations were hampered because the grounds at home are frozen. We went to South Africa to prepare, played two matches against Pakistan in Doha, Qatar and in Spain. The conditions here are different but we have experienced players who can overcome them."

Striker Ibarra, who made his debut in 2005, said Argentina would have to play as a unit to make a mark.

New Delhi, Feb. 25 -- It's never a good idea to try and speak for a whole nation. But on Wednesday, it was a risk worth taking. To Sachin Tendulkar, on whom more words have been written than any other cricketer, including Sir Don Bradman, two words will suffice: "Thank you." Over the last two decades and more, the numbers have piled up, sometimes beyond comprehension. He owns every record worth keeping, but the ODI double-hundred, a threshold never crossed in 2962 matches, is something you will all remember, because it's not something expected. It's not an incremental achievement, not another Test hundred or ODI run that just stretches his dominance. It was an effort that sealed a series win and reaffirmed India's dominance. This double hundred is something new from Sachin, something fresh for a country of adoring and massively demanding fans. That he can still produce performances that make you sit up and take notice is a tribute to the longevity of his appeal. For the best part, Indians are envious of Tendulkar: of the money he has earned, the cars he drives, the stories of him shopping for furniture in Europe, the picture in every second hoarding. The question that isn't asked quite so often, is just how much Tendulkar has done for India. Remember the curly-haired cherub - there's really no other word for it - who got hit in the face on his first tour of Pakistan as a 16-year-old, back in 1989, but refused to leave the batting crease? Or perhaps the Desert Storm series, in Sharjah in 1998, where he attacked Australia's bowlers so relentlessly that the bullies were left begging umpires for ridiculous lbw decisions? Or the World Cup in South Africa when he dismissed Shoaib Akhtar from his presence with such authority that the issue was settled well before the winning runs were hit? A couple of years ago, Tendulkar also brought the tennis elbow, an affliction common to the sport its named after but not so well known in cricket, to the attention of the Indian populace. During that time, he made a rare personal admission. "What brought tears to my eyes was the fact that my son Arjun wanted to play with me, wanted me to carry him, but I had to tell him to be careful, because of the elbow," he said. Coming from anyone else, it would have sounded cheesy, corny almost. But Tendulkar has given, and continues to give so much to Indian cricket, that it touched a chord with every father, and some prospective ones. On the day, it was fitting that Mahendra Singh Dhoni was brutalising bowlers at the other end. The bruiser from Ranchi has often been offered as a posterboy for the small towns, the very opposite of Tendulkar, who learned his cricket at Shivaji Park, the one-time cradle of Indian cricket. At a time when all the talk was about phasing out the seniors, Dhoni rose to prominence and eventually assumed the captaincy. Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble moved on, and in Dhoni's watch Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman have flourished. In the mad scramble of celebrating New India, Dhoni never forgot those who have driven India's rise to the top.

Modi takes on Aussies via tweets

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 12:49 PM

Mumbai, Feb. 25 -- IPL chairman Lalit Modi has been been at loggerheads with Australia skipper Ricky Ponting over the Australians' participation in IPL's third edition starting March 12. But the clash has not put a full stop to Ponting IPL future prospects. It was reported by Australian media that Ponting, whose contract was terminated by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), had a clash with high profile freelance cricketers during the Australian Cricketers' Association meeting about IPL participation in the wake of security concerns. A source confirmed Ponting had an argument with Shane Warne, Rajasthan Royals' skipper-coach, which led to a disagreement between players. On Wednesday, Modi took on Ponting and the cricketers' association via his tweets. "(I've) been told Ricky Ponting is pressuring players not to come. Maybe it's due to the fact he was dropped from KKR," he tweeted. But this does not mean Modi will deny a place in next year's planned auction to Ponting, who hasn't appeared in an IPL tie after his four appearances in the inaugural edition. "We will decide when it is time to decide," Modi told HT. Reiterating IPL's stand of not recognising any players' association, Modi also blasted the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA).

Lee knew his time in Tests was over after England won the Ashes

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 12:45 PM

Sydney, Feb.25 (ANI): Australian pace bowler Brett Lee knew that a part of his career was over last August as England paraded around The Oval with the Ashes.

The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Lee, as saying: " To not play a part in that series was really hard on me. I probably knew after that fifth Test match that the time was right to leave. I had to draw a line in the sand and part with Test cricket.

"Before the Ashes, the way that I trained, the way I got physically prepared for that series, it's the best shape I've ever been in my life. I suppose it's why I'm excited about the future as well, because it was only last year. I knew I can do it, I got back to bowling speeds I was really happy with, I was taking wickets, the ball was swinging, but also there's that fine line," he added.

He further said: "Do I put everything on the line and play three months of Test cricket and never play cricket for Australia again ... or do I give away Test cricket in order to play a few more years for Australia?"

The 33-year-old pacer will now attempt to choreograph his exit from internationals altogether by fighting his way back into the Australian one-day team for next February's World Cup in India.

"If I can be there at the 2011 World Cup, if I could achieve that goal, I would be more than happy to walk away," he said.

Few, certainly Lee, could have guessed that his last appearance in the baggy green would have been the Boxing Day Test of 2008, during which he broke down with a foot injury. He managed to overcome that injury in time for the Ashes tour but after stunning form in the tour game he succumbed to a side strain that kept him out of the first three Tests.

Lee's priority now is three-year-old son Preston.

"I don't want to be away from home for 11 months of the year any more, I've done it for 14 years now," he said.

"I've got a young boy, Preston, and he's the most important thing to me in the whole wide world. And I don't want to be away from him for six months, I won't be, I promised myself, I promised him."

Lee did contemplate quitting the sport entirely but said he still harbours "burning ambition".

After 310 wickets from 76 Tests, Lee sits fourth on the all-time list of Australian bowlers.

He must now hope selectors do not consign him to the stands for the World Twenty20 in May or the World Cup next year. (ANI)

Capello counts Rooney among world's top three footballers

Published>Thu, Feb 25 10 12:39 PM

London, Feb. 25 (ANI): England coach Fabio Capello has rated Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney as one of the three best players in the world, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

"Rooney, Messi together with Cristiano Ronaldo are the young players anyone would want in their team. Wayne is extraordinary. He has talent and a desire to learn. Ferguson has taught him such a lot, I've only had to refine him," The Sun quoted Capello, as saying.

The Italian insists that he has done that by telling the 28-goal striker to concentrate on playing in the penalty area more.

"Ronaldo's departure from Manchester has made Rooney more responsible and he is much more involved now," he said.

But Rooney's sensational form has still not ended the repeated calls for his United team-mate Michael Owen to be recalled.

That clearly irritates Capello.

"There is one they want me to select, Owen, given that he is the best England goalscorer of all times. But I cannot select him if he does not play," he said.

As Capello's prepares for the World Cup finals, he believes the size of the foreign legion in English football is a problematic area.

"In the Premier League there are only 38 percent English players but 67 percent in Italy and 63 percent in Spain," he said. (ANI)

First in the world to score a double century in one-dayers

Sachin's magical knock comes off amere 147 balls

Tendulkar in a league of his own after cracking first- ever 200 in ODIs

SACHIN Tendulkar treated the packed Captain Roop Singh Stadium to one of the most daring displays of strokeplay in the history of One-Day International cricket as the Master Blaster slammed an unbeaten 200 against South Africa here on Wednesday.

Since the time Pakistan?s Saeed Anwar scored an energy-sapping 194 against India in June 1997 at the Independence Cup in Chennai, cricket fans have been waiting to see if anyone could scale the 200-mark. Charles Coventry of Zimbabwe equalled Anwar's record with a 194 not out against Bangladesh in Bulawayo last year.

But then, it had to be Tendulkar who was going to score the historic 200 in an ODI. At a time when people feel that T20 cricket is what sends the pulse racing, Tendulkar uncorked the champagne stuff against the hapless Proteas on a flat track, smashing 25 boundaries and three sixes.

Two months short of his 37th birthday, the Mumbaikar, who says he wants to give up playing ODI cricket after the 2011 World Cup, treated the audience to audacious and authentic strokes which one gets to see once in a lifetime. Tendulkar paced his knock wonderfully.

Till the 40th over, he went hammer and tongs at the South African attack. Once he had reached the 190s, it was captain MS Dhoni who then started scoring briskly. History was made in the 50th over. Off the third ball, Tendulkar pushed a Charl Langeveldt delivery towards point and traversed the distance of 22 yards to the non-striker's end which saw fans erupt with joy inside the stadium.

Tendulkar took off his helmet and raised his bat while looking skywards. It was as if he was having a short conversation with his late father Ramesh Tendulkar, who he treats as his role model. The South Africans, who were at the receiving end all along, rushed to congratulate the champion even as Dhoni hugged the star batsman.

It all began on a warm Wednesday afternoon when Tendulkar struck his first boundary off Wayne Parnell in the second over of the day. After losing opening partner Virender Sehwag early, Tendulkar took it upon himself to keep the tempo of the innings up. He brought up his half-century off 36 balls and his 46th ODI ton off 90.

He then took the South African bowlers to the cleaners, helping India smash 63 off the 30 balls of the batting powerplay, reaching his 150 off just 118 balls.

Generations of cricket lovers have witnessed the Master Blaster?s 20 years in international cricket. From the watershed moment against New Zealand in March 1994 when he first opened the batting and scored a quickfire 82, to his twin tons against the Australians in Sharjah in 1998, through the swashbuckling 98 against Pakistan in the 2003 World Cup to the heart- breaking 175 in a losing cause against Australia in Hyderabad last year ? each knock is etched in the minds of the millions of cricket fans.

The last few months have certainly seen Tendulkar return to a level of batting which had dissipated after a spate of career-threatening injuries to his elbow, back and toe in the last decade.

With critics complaining that Tendulkar has forgotten the art of demolition, one would have expected his successor ? Sehwag ? to achieve the feat of becoming the first batsman to score 200 runs in a single innings in ODIs. In fact, Sehwag often expressed his desire to become the first batsman to score 200 runs in ODIs. But on Wednesday, Tendulkar once again showed why he is the man who Sir Donald Bradman considered closest to his own style of batting.

Chief curator Ajay Sahasrabuddhe was elated that the Captain Roop Singh Stadium was the venue for the historic moment.

"No words can describe my feeling.

I had told you on the eve of the match that god- willing, this match would witness Tendulkar?s best ODI knock till date.

And that is exactly what has happened.

I can?t believe that my words have actually come true."

"I might have prepared a batting paradise, but it was the genius of Tendulkar alone who made this innings possible. Having prepared the pitch, even I am now a part of this historic event," Sahasrabuddhe told MAIL TODAY . The crowd which had come expecting to see India win was mesmerised by the innings.

"We had come expecting to see India seal the series in Gwalior itself and maintain their impressive record at this venue, but this was truly unexpected and out of the world. These things can never be planned and I am sure that even a great like Tendulkar would have never planned for such an innings," said Rohan, a spectator. Shane Warne had famously admitted that he had nightmares after Tendulkar's 'Desert Storm' in Sharjah. One wonders if the South Africans would even manage to sleep anytime soon.

I'd like to dedicate this double hundred to the people of India for standing behind me for the last 20 years, come what may

It was only when I crossed 175 and realised that it was still the 42nd over, I felt I have an opportunity (to score 200). So I decided to take singles and give strike to Dhoni

I don?t play for records, I play the game because I enjoy it and I still have the passion for it. I didn't start playing cricket to break records

No record is unbreakable and I think if anyone can break this record now, it will only be an Indian.
