Pak court dismisses petition against Shoaib and Sania

Lahore, Apr 27 (PTI) A Pakistani court today dismissed a petition seeking the registration of a case against Shoaib Malik and his wife Indian tennis star Sania Mirza for the alleged violation of several rules during a reception held in Sialkot to celebrate their wedding. A man named Sheikh Hasan Sheraz had alleged in a petition filed in the Lahore High Court that the couple had violated the Marriage Functions (Prohibition of Ostentatious Displays and Wasteful Expenses) Ordinance of 2000 and the Dowry and Bridle Gift Restriction Act of 1976 by accepting expensive gifts. Sheraz also alleged a ban on serving more than one dish at a wedding function was violated during the reception held in Sialkot on April 25. He alleged the organisers of the event violated regulations restricting the use of electricity at such functions. Lahore High Court Chief Justice Khwaja Muhammad Sharif dismissed the petition after Sheraz was unable to produce evidence to back up his allegations. Sharif said Sheraz had no proof to support his claim that Rs 5 million was spent on the reception. Referring to the presentation of a gold crown to Sania by Pakistan''s Population Welfare Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan, the Chief Justice observed that this was done at Hyderabad in India, where his court has no jurisdiction. Seraz had also requested the court to order the couple and the administration of a five-star hotel in Lahore to conduct Shoaib''s ''walima'' today in accordance with the law. He had also sought legal proceedings against Minister Firdous Ashiq Awan for her move to get Sania declared an ambassador Pakistan''s population control programmes even though she is an Indian citizen.
