FIA not investigating into spot-fixing scam: report

Tue, Sep 07 10 09:23 PM

Islamabad, Sep 7 (PTI) The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is not conducting any investigation into the spot-fixing scam involving Pakistani cricketers as the organisation has a "limited mandate", an official said today. An official of the FIA told state-run APP news agency that the "government has not ordered the agency to conduct any inquiry into the scam". Referring to a news item published in a section of press, the official said the FIA is not carrying out any probe into the scam and described the report as "concocted and contrary to the facts". The FIA "will be interacting with the Scotland Yard as a routine cooperation and coordination in such police matters", the unnamed official was quoted as saying. Interior Minister Rehman Malik recently said an FIA team would be sent to Britain to liaise with Scotland Yard if permission is granted by British authorities for the team to travel to that country. Pakistan''s cricket team has been rocked by allegations by the British tabloid ''News of the World'' that bowlers Mohammad Aamir and Mohammad Asif delivered three deliberate no-balls in a recent Test against England in line with the predictions of alleged fixer Mazhar Majeed. Majeed allegedly received 150,000 pounds from the tabloid''s undercover reporters posing as members of a gambling cartel.
