Ferrari driver Felipe Massa has said he was fortunate to get away with a false start at last month's Belgian Formula One Grand Prix, blaming the incident on the low seat position in his car.

Video footage taken from the crowd and posted on the internet after the race at Spa clearly showed Massa's car was positioned well ahead of the line on the starting grid that it should have been behind.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) is investigating why no race officials or rival teams noticed the issue but said there was no possibility of the Brazilian losing his fourth place finish.

"Usually I'm the lowest guy in the car. I didn't see the line very well. I was lucky," Massa told reporters ahead of Sunday's Italian Grand Prix.
