Sahaj, Girish, Shardul jointly lead after Rd 9

New Delhi, Sep 10 (PTI) Both overnight leaders Sahaj Grover and Girish Koushik settled for draw while Maharashtra''s Shardul Gagare outplayed Antonio Viani in 62 moves to join the duo at the top after ninth round of National Sub-junior Chess Championship here today. The trio now have 7.5 points apiece as the contest for the national crown heated up. On the first board, local hope, IM Sahaj Grover drew with Ashraf Mohammed of Orissa from a game arising out of Winawer variation of the French defence. Sahaj was unable to penetrate into opponent''s camp and agreed for a draw in 19 moves. Former Under-10 world champion, Karnataka''s Girish Koushik faced a stiff challenge from World Under-12 silver medallist Murali Karthikeyan of Tamil Nadu. Girish opted out for a rarely played variation of the Guioco Piano. Girish was defensive throughout and later his offensive moves were thwarted by Murali to end up in a draw in 66 moves. In the Girls section, P V Nandhidhaa beat J Saranya of Tamil Nadu to extend her lead by 1.5 points. On the top board, Nandhidhaa playing the black pieces of the Sicilian defence did well into the endgame. Saranya seeing the advantage fading sacrificed a knight which was unsound and the game ended in 41 moves. Nandhidhaa now has 8.5 points. Two more stages remaining in the 11-round swiss system championship, a release said.
