Chappell prefers Ponting over Waugh to lead Australia

Melbourne, Oct 17 (ANI): Former Australian captain Ian Chappell has said that he would prefer Ricky Ponting to captain the team than Steve Waugh.

Comparing the records of both captains until Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath retired, he said Waugh had winning percentage of 71.93 percent whereas Ponting has 77.14.

Ponting's overall performance as Australian captain stands at a 64 per cent winning record. That puts him well ahead of all the other long-term captains of his era, except Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

"Ponting is a good captain; I've never seen him run out of ideas and most importantly he hasn't lost the support of his players," FOX Sports quoted Chappell, as saying.

"There's been no sign that the Australian team isn't giving him a hundred per cent effort. If those signs were evident, it would be time for the selectors to replace him even though there would be a perception of panic with an Ashes series beckoning," he said.

Chappell said that Ponting has continued to win at better than a 50 per cent rate despite having to cope with the loss of many more champion players than any other Australian captain.

He also said that the loss to England is Ponting's Achilles heel, which has opened floodgates of criticism and putting the Australian skipper under intense scrutiny. (ANI)
