Russia won the bid to host the 2018 World Cup and Qatar was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup, it was announced on Thursday after a vote by FIFA's executive committee in Zurich.
Russia was chosen over the likes of England and Spain-Portugal to host the 2018 World Cup, while US lost out to Qatar, as the latter will host the 2022 World Cup.
Other contenders for the 2022 bid were Japan, South Korea and Australia. Brazil was already chosen as host of the next World Cup.
For Russia, not even the absence of Vlamidir Putin could derail their bid as the possibility of new frontiers became the top-priority for the voters. Putin was expected to be a prominent figure during the final days of the bidding but he chose to remain in Moscow.
This will not be the first experience for Russia as they have already hosted events like Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea in 2008 and UEFA Cup Final in 1999.
