Humpy, Sandipan off to winning start

From Our Chess Correspondent Gibraltar, Jan 27 (PTI) Grandmaster Koneru Humpy started her campaign with an easy victory against Maria Schoene of Germany in the first round of the Gibtelecom chess tournament here. Humpy opened her account with black pieces showcasing her superior understanding in the Siclian defense. Maria went for unwarranted complications early in the middle game and ended up having weaknesses on both flanks. Humpy picked a pawn and later converted to a winning queen and minor piece endgame to coast home in 43 moves. Women Grandmaster Kruttika Nadig stole the limelight amongst the Indian on the opening day scoring a crushing victory over Grandmaster Namig Guliyev of Azerbaijan. Amongst the eight Indians in the fray, seven ended up as winners in the opening round of this high prize money tournament while only Eesha Karavade played out a draw with Oswaldo Bindrich of Germany. The tournament has attracted 218 participants from across the globe to battle it out for the 96000 Pounds Sterling prize pool. There are ten rounds in all and 15000 Pounds is reserved for the winner. In addition there is a 8000 Pounds prize for the best woman player for which Humpy is the hot favourite. The first round was not devoid of a major surprise as top seeded Grandmaster Etienne Bacrot of France was forced to split the point with compatriot Guillau Camus de Solliers. MORE PTI Cor ATK
