The opening day of the Indian Premier League's (IPL) third season saw a jump of 35% in viewership compared to last year when the tournament was played in South Africa. On an average, about 4.26 crore viewers were glued into to their TV sets on the first day of IPL III, as per TAM Media, the leading TV measurement agency. TAM has released the rating numbers on all-India basis.
However, for the opening match there is a slight increase in television ratings from last year. Through cable and satellite homes (CS 4+ year) it stood at 5.9 and from the digital homes services (Digital 4+ years), it was 5.1.
TAM had initially released the data on March 16 in which they recorded feeds only from the six metros namely Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai and Ahmedabad. There too IPL-III was a clear winner.
IPL-III's second day, second match recorded 4.16 crore viewers tuning into Sony Entertainment Television to see the match. The number is 84% higher than last year.
The second match on Day 2 between Kings XI Punjab and Delhi Daredevils recorded a rating of 5.4 (CS 4+ years) and 7.2 (Digital 4+ years). Last year, the second match on Day 2 recorded 4.7 and 6.1 for both the panels respectively, In IPL-I, the numbers were far below from this year. On an average, 2.6 crore viewers (CS 4+ years) tuned into the channel to watch the matches on the second day, whereas IPL-II had a number of 2.25 crore (CS 4+ years).
