London, May 26(ANI): An 11-year-old British boy has smashed Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney's record for goals scored in one season.

Gerard Garner beat Rooney's tally of 72 goals by bagging 76 this campaign to guide his team to nine trophies and win all of their 39 games.

"Wayne's one of my heroes, but I'm a Liverpool fan so my favourite player is Torres," The Sun quoted Gerard, as saying.

Rooney's total for Liverpool Boys in 1996-97, when he was also 11, had been considered unbeatable.

Gerard attends the same primary school as Rooney, Our Lady and St. Swithin's in Liverpool and has been on Liverpool FC's books since the age of six.

Dubbed "Jazza" by teammates, Gerard has also scored eight hat-tricks, twice fired in five goals and bagged four goals on three occasions.

He also scored both goals in a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid's youth team in a friendly in Spain.

"He is left-footed and has a great shot which has seen him score spectacular goals from 25 and 30 yards," said Andy Reidel, Liverpool Boys U11 manager. (ANI)
