BCCI slaps notices on six players for pub brawl

Mumbai, May 18 (IANS) The Indian cricket board Tuesday asked Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Rohit Sharma, Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja to explain why action should not be taken against them for their alleged pub brawl during the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.

A top source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) told IANS that the show cause notice was served by secretary N.Srinivasan at the behest of president Shashank Manohar.

The source said the six players have been given seven days to respond to the notice. The players were involved in a brawl at a pub in St Lucia, May 11, hours after India crashed out of the World Twenty20.

According to reports, the brawl started after the Indian cricketers were taunted by the fans for their failure to reach the semi-final and the cricketers reacted strongly.

Both Yuvraj and Nehra denied the brawl took place but team manager Ranjib Biswal played down the incident, saying there was only an altercation at the pub.

But after Biswal submitted his report, BCCI's chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said that the board had conducted its own inquiry into the incident.

'We conducted an inquiry over the incident in the West Indies that was widely reported in the media. After considering all the information that we have gathered, the president took the decision that the board secretary will issue show cause notices to those players,' Shetty said.
