Holders Russia set up a world championship quarter-final clash against Olympic champions Canada after storming past Finland 5-0 on Tuesday.
The Russians, bidding for a third consecutive world title, will be eager to exact revenge for their Vancouver Games quarter-final 7-3 rout by Canada in February.
Both teams will be without most of their big names, still competing in the NHL playoffs.
Russia, who have now won 25 consecutive world championship matches, left it until late in the first period to take the lead through Sergei Fedorov.
They twice added a brace in a span of seconds midway through the second and early in the third period to book their spot in the last eight.
Canada went through despite a 3-2 defeat to the Czech Republic, with the Czechs, led by veteran Jagomir Jagr who scored their second goal, scraping through to the quarter-finals to avoid their worst world championship showing in 90 years.
"We're going to have to go through the tough teams eventually," said Canadian forward John Tavares.
Hosts Germany also edged through with a 2-1 win over Slovakia to set up a clash with Switzerland.
Sweden and Denmark will battle it out in an all-Scandinavian encounter. Finland take on the Czech Republic.
