London, July 9 (ANI): Mid-fielder Xabi Alonso has warned Spain to learn lessons from England's World Cup demise and not be overconfident when taking on The Netherlands in Sunday's final.
Alonso pointed to England's calamitous last-16 performance against Germany in Bloemfontein as proof that an off day can see dreams come crashing down.
According to the Daily Express, Alonso believes Vicente del Bosque's side must maintain their standards as they look to lift the trophy for the first time.
"England had a very tough game and the expectations were very high. But one bad game and you are out. That is how it works in the World Cup, and that should be a warning to us on Sunday. We have been coping with the pressure quite well because we knew the expectations were quite high," Alonso said.
"The role of the favourite doesn't give you any help, you still have to justify it and show it out on the pitch. So far we have been playing well and now we have a very tough game in the final against Holland," he added. (ANI)
