London, July 9(ANI): Australian coach Tim Nielsen has said that his team can reclaim the World No.1 Test ranking, if they play well in the next six months leading up to the Ashes series.

Australia is currently third with 119 rating points, behind India (124) and South Africa (120).

During the six-month period, Australia are scheduled to play Pakistan in England, India in India, and then bid to regain the Ashes on home soil.

"That gives us a great opportunity and if we are playing well enough in the Ashes, it will give us the opportunity to regain the No.1 position," The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Nielsen, as saying.

"It is not something we talk much about, but if we worry about playing the cricket we can play, that will take care of the rest of it. So, over the next little while we have to make sure we get all of our squad players right and if we do that, we are a real chance," he added.

The Ricky Ponting led team will start their campaign with next week's opening Test against Pakistan at Lord's.

Pakistan have not defeated Australia in their past 15 Tests, their last success was a 74-run win in Sydney in November 1995. (ANI)
