Gogoi stresses for specialised sports academies

Guwahati, Oct 30 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today stressed the need for specialised academies in sports disciplines to hone the skills of young sports persons. After inaugurating the Assam Badminton Academy here, Gogoi said that he hoped the academy would go a long way in restoring the state''s pride and glory in badminton by producing world class players. Assam Badminton Association (ABA) president and state Health and Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarmah said on the occasion that it was a red letter day for sports lovers of the state and a lot of effort had gone into the setting up of the academy. The academy would rope in foreign as well as Indian coaches for intensive training of budding players to make them world class, he said. "Emphasis will be given on the right type of training and matchplay to create an ideal training environment, allowing each individual player to perform at an optimum level both during training and competitive play," he said. Eminent former shuttler P Gopichand, who was also present on the occasion, said he was hopeful that players from Assam and the Northeast would get maximum benefit from the academy and the country would get many champions from here.
