Sizzling finish gives Rollins one-shot lead at McGladrey

American John Rollins carded four birdies over his final five holes on his way to a bogey-free, seven-under-par 63 and a one-shot lead after the first round of the Fall Series McGladrey Classic at St. Simons Island, Georgia on Thursday.

Rollins was having a solid but unspectacular day on the Seaside Course until he produced a blistering finish, dropping four straight birdies from the 14th.

Playing the back nine first, David Toms had a chance to join Rollins atop the leaderboard but a bogey at the ninth left him with a 64, one shot off the pace alongside U.S. compatriot Troy Merritt.

Joe Durant, Michael Letzig and Rich Barcelo are all one shot further adrift after returning 65s.

U.S. Ryder Cup team mates Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar were back in action with mixed results.

Johnson, a resident of nearby Sea Island, appeared to be suffering a Ryder Cup hangover, battling to an even par 70 while Kuchar moved into contention with a three-under 67.
