Kolkata, Oct 7 (PTI) The Cricket Association of Bengal today mourned the demise of their former president Siddhartha Shankar Ray, who died at his south Kolkata residence last evening following renal failure. The former West Bengal chief minister''s body, put in a hearse, was carried to the CAB offices where president Jagmohan Dalmiya placed a wreath before being taken to the crematorium where he was given a final adieu with full state honours. In its condolence message, the CAB said, "The entire sports fraternity of our state is stunned for the sad demise of Ray. His death caused an immense loss in the sports arena of this state and ended a golden era." The CAB will hold a condolence meeting on November 14 at Eden Gardens and the offices will remain closed till Tuesday as a mark of respect. Ray was at the helm of CAB from 1981-1986. He was also triple blue of the Calcutta University representing the famous institution in cricket, tennis and football. He was the captain of Presidency college football team and Kalighat cricket during his college days. As a sports administrator, Ray displayed rare acumen when he was president of CAB and it was during his tenure as Bengal chief minister the Netaji Indoor Stadium was built. Also a barrister, Ray had defended Sourav Ganguly successfully in 2004 after the then India captain was served a two-Test ban by Match Referee Clive Lloyd for the team''s slow over rate during a India-Pakistan ODI at Eden Gardens. In 2005, Ray along with Soli Sorabjee, were also successful in getting Ganguly''s six-ODI ban, imposed by Chris Broad, reduced to one-third.
