NZ opt to field in 1st ODI as Vettori, McCullum pull out

Guwahati, November 28 (PTI) Leading the side in place of Daniel Vettori who pulled out at the last minute because of a sore back, Ross Taylor won the toss as New Zealand opted to bowl against India in the five-ODI series opener at Nehru Stadium here today. New Zealand will also be without their explosive opener Brendon McCullum who also has a recurring back spasm that had troubled him during the third Test in Nagpur. In place of McCullum, Martin Guptill will open the batting with Jamie How, while Gareth Hopkins will keep the wickets. For India, Bengal stumper Wriddhiman Saha will make his ODI debut as Gautam Gambhir opted to bring in three seamers -- Asish Nehra, Sreesanth and Munaf Patel -- and one specialist off spinner in Ravichandran Ashwin. India also brought in allrounder Yusuf Pathan as Saurabh Tiwary, Ravindra Jadeja and R Vinay Kumar have been left out of the playing XI. Teams India: Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Yusuf Pathan, Ashish Nehra, Sreesanth, Munaf Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin. New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Jamie How, Ross Taylor (captain), Scott Styris, Kane Williamson, Grant Elliot, Gareth Hopkins (wk), Daryl Tuffey, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Andy McKay.
