Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova needed all her big match experience to dig herself out of trouble and beat German qualifier Angelique Kerber 3-6 7-5 6-4 at the Australian Open on Friday.

Kerber, ranked 118th in the world, looked to be on the verge of an upset when she outplayed Kuznetsova for the first hour before the world number three clawed her way back into the contest.

The French Open champion struggled to find her rhythm in the swirling wind at Melbourne Park, making 39 unforced errors in an unconvincing display, but was able to avoid joining Kim Clijsters as another third round casualty.

Kuznetsova will play Nadia Petrova in the fourth round on Sunday after the Russian demolished the Belgian 6-0 6-1 in the biggest upset of the championship so far.
