Volkswagen Polo cup to debut in India on June 19

Chennai, Jan 22 (PTI) A regular fixture on the German motorsports calendar, the Volkswagen Polo Cup will make its debut in India on June 19 this year. Joerg Mueller, Volkswagen Chief Group Representative in India said a total of six events would be held -- the first in Pune, the company''s India headquarters and the others in Chennai and Coimbatore. The races in the southern cities would be part of the JK National Road Racing Championship, he said. "This is a very significant move by Volkswagen in India. We are glad we are contributing to development of a unique Indian motorsports culture. Volkswagen''s motorsports activities are renowned globally and we look forward to bringing our knowledge and expertise in this direction to India." Volkswagen announced their entry into Indian motorsports in October 2009 with signing of a Letter of Intent with JK Tyre & Industries Limited to bring the event to the country in 2010. This cup will have a record 20 drivers in 16-24 age group racing in cars with identical technology that are centrally tuned and maintained by highly skilled factory mechanics, a company press release said. .
